Finally came across a sensible and informative video on helmet safety standard. ISI helmets are a joke. The one I got with my Yamaha FZ literally cracked when I dropped it down a flight of stairs. Forget about it saving you in a crash. Been using SMK with ECE standard and it’s amazing. To all riders out there, always wear a helmet and strap it good. Ride safe, it’s a bloody, mad jungle out there 🤟🏻

I think helmet manufacturers and sellers have a bigger role to play. Manufacturers, Exporters and Authorized distributors must follow the law of the land. And they do that... They don't put a vehicle on the road unless it's BS3 or BS4 or BS6... Car manufacturers cannot sell a left hand drive car no matter how costly they are. Even mobile manufacturers too follow SAR values permissible in India. So the manufacturers has to work with the government to sell their quality products through authorized distributors and retailers through may be in licencing or contract manufacturing or they can set up manufacturing units here too. Although I oppose blanket ban on non-ISI helmets, but it's a fact that if today government allowes DOT, EU, SHARP, SNELL certified helmets then tomorrow the market will be flooded with 1000 rupees Arai or Shoei helmets with all the certifications printed behind it from Japan to USA and from Russia to Antarctica sold by some Munna Bhai... We cannot take that risk. At least, now I can buy with satisfaction that whatever MT, LS2, HJC etc I am buying is authentic and quality product.
I am using Studds ful face Ninja style helmet. Pretty good and standard quality at that price(bellow 2K). Cleaning & washing procedures are very good. Strap is also very good and all over have very good cushioning.

If i would have not invested in them i wouldn't be here. Enforcement of the right laws is a big problem in our country as most of the decisions are made by lobbying netas not auto experts. Hello Amit, First of all I would like to thank you for explaining us the actual scenario related to this Helmet thing. Just one query I wanted to ask, can all of these imported Helmets be it DOT or ECE be homologated as per Indian Standards...??? As they in any way have passed tests and can easily be certified in India as well . Perhaps manufacturer themselves have to take the pain of dealing with govt in India which will be the an issue because these hemlets are directly imported and does not have any roots in India. Homologation of these imported Helmets is the only way for them to exist in India.
Well, DOT, SNELL and ECE certified helmets are quality helmets which exceed the Indian norms. Just like expensive automobiles imported as CBUs which don't need to be homologated, such helmets should be automatically legalized without the need for testing. Unfortunately there is a helmet Makers' lobby in India which is working to implement stupid laws. We are doing our bit in fighting this nonsense
The biggest problem in that would be the weight. As per the new norms, the helmet's weight is limited to 1.2 kgs. Most ABS or Fibreglass helmets weight more than 1.3 kgs, and modular helmets can go as high as 2kgs. Only really expensive carbon fibre helmets can touch 1.2 kgs
Royal Enfield helmets are both ISI and DOT and ECE certified. 1- Royal Enfield HEA150005 Street Nimbus (ECE and DOT) 2- Royal Enfield Big Wing Mono HES16011 (ISI and DOT)
ISI standard is based on ECE, but their process is like DOT. ISI is only is a set of standards, but testing is not mandatory. An RTI filed by OVERDRIVE magazine revealed that only FIVE helmets were tested in India between August 2017-August 2018. So basically any manufacturer can claim that their helmet is ISI or DOT certified as the government is not legally required to test them. In ECE, the authorities purchase the helmet and actually test the production pieces.

Ek baar Mera chota accident hua tha.mujhe 200rs Wala helmet bachaya... tubeless Tyre tha...tin cut piece ghus gya...Tyre came out of rim in mid of highway and I fall.i was lucky for at least 5minutes no truck or bus were there

You could have mentioned some helmets with good certifications in budget range. Recently bought 2 steelbird helmets for ISI genuine certification. Didn't go for cheaper options. Now after watching this video I feel I wasted my money on them.

So combine the honour system + lack of legal requirement for testing + lack of testing + proposed reduction of maximum weight to 1.2 kgs, ISI helmets will go from an inferior helmet to becoming a death trap for your head

No doubts on the specification of the quality but since any manufacturer can "Self-Certify" that it is DOT approved, the question arises whether the agency that is responsible to enforce this standards are active here in the country. And we know how this enforcment agency operate, hence, its safer to wear a helmet tested and approved by ISI rather than DOT certified but not tested and approved, cause DOT is "Self Certified" which any Ramu and Shamu can do.

Can you please explain the shell material comparison between the different standards? Polycarbonate shell vs Fibreglass shell...
Standard don't check the material, they just test how the helmet maintains itself during and after the crash. It's generally an ABS material
