    Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

Ron I had to smile when you said the word "Wundhammer grip"😊. It brought me back in the day! I was a sniper in a SOG group in the late 1980's through the mid 1990's, what a great era for rifles! Savage still had a custom shop then (late 80's), and I i had Bell and Carlson send them an adjustable stock similar to the one in this video with a "Wundhammer" pistol grip. Two model 112 BV (benchrest/varmint) barrelled actions with heavy profile 26" threaded barrel in .223 and .308. SOOO sweet and accurate! The .223 printed cloverleaf
3/16" groups with Hornady hand loads and was my urban rifle for things like taking out a street light prior an entry team going in. The .308 was a true 1/2" rifle all day long. Loved those rifles! My son still has the .223 which I was allowed to keep😁. Keep up the good work Ron 🙏

Hello Ron. The three access cheek piece is adjusted by pulling out the cheek riser completely. Then using the allen key loosening the two carbon fiber stays and adjusting the cheek riser laterally. Hope that helps. Also I highly recommend switching out the bottom metal and magazine to the Hawking Precision “Hunter” DBM. That will give you the flush mag you prefer.

Regarding the cheek riser, I really appreciate the adjustable knobs, and specifically purchased my MDT XRS chassis for that reason. If you ever need to remove your bolt in field (to check for a barrel obstruction, or to field clean it), the fact that you can do it on the fly without digging around for an allen key is a huge plus.

I bought a Bergara Crest carbon 7mm prc and it shoots .25 all day. I bought 2 3 round AIC mags, but I agree that metal mags are not for hunting and carbon or plastic flush mount would be best. So far, most manufacturers aren't making those for this type of rifles unfortunately. Hopefully in time the new mags will become available.

On regards to copper bullets being lighter so that they will properly stabilize is only half the reason they're lighter. They need a certain amount velocity to adequately expand. Ammo companies can't be offering 190 or 200 grain copper ammo even if they stabilize because some knucklehead will shoot a deer at 450 yards and complain about the ammo because it was traveling way too slow at that point. Keep copper lighter to keep velocities up.

    • @jfess1911
      @jfess1911 Месяц назад +2

You are right that the effective range of a well designed lead core bullet can be longer than for a monolithic one, but that is mainly due to BC. The main reason for the weight difference, as Ron stated, is bullet density. Lead is about 27% more dense than copper. The 160 CX is physically larger than the Hornady 175 or 180 grain lead core bullets and eats up powder volume in the case. The 160 CX has the same muzzle velocity as the 175 ELD-X, largely for that reason. The 160 copper bullet can be about the same size as a 195 grain lead-core bullet and requires the same barrel twist to stabilize. The density difference is also why the BCs of the copper alloy bullets are lower than comparable weight lead core. The copper bullets are physically larger and density is important for BC.
The velocity needed to expand is something they can control in the design. There are even subsonic copper monolithic bullets. For examples of supersonic monolithic bullets with lower opening speeds, the Barnes LRX and Cavity Back .277" open down to 1600 fps. That is lower than for Hornady's lead cored SST bullets.

If I had my choice I would use a flush mount mag on my 300 Tikka. But where I live, and hunt, we have a lot of critters that would just as soon eat you if nothing else. So I use an extended mag that holds five shots, just a little reassurance when you wish you had an extra bullet in the mag. I don't mind the extended mag on my Tikka, it doesn't rattle. Cheers

A lot of the features on this rifle are on my Tikka , not the carbon wrap barrel. The bolt release looks like a dead copy and with a 20" barrel it is a nail driver, I don't mind the box mag myself , providing its a double stack .

Metal, surrounded by an air gap and then a sleeve? Sounds exactly like a thermos flask. They claim it helps keep the barrel cool… my guess is only on the outside.

If my rifle / cartridge combo will put all the bullets in the same hole consistently, then the rest of it is my fault. Either the wind got me or I flinched. Half MOA at 100 yards and a complete miss on a deer at 300 yards-- don't blame the hardware. I think you got a keeper!

Federals 7PRC ammo is hitting roughly box velocities with the proper barrel length. 2950-3000 is very doable with the right powder.

Bullet selection, velocity is always better handloaded, consistency. My hand loads are measured 3 times. If I did my part, the ammo will shoot consistent over and over and over. 3 shot groups from box ammo doesn't prove much.

One with a suppressor or a big brake and doubled up ear pro. The Lord's caliber though not the biggest or fastest on the blue planet, still has a well earned reputation for helping experienced shooters develop a pesky flinch. As does just about anything that recoils harder than 308. The other option is to make it heavy like 14-15 lbs to tame the recoil.
In other words I wouldn't hand a win mag to a beginning shooter. I've had trouble with new shooters coming in great with there first 3 shots and then rapidly degenerating into puddles when learning on ab cheap light plastic stocked 06' or winmag. I vastly prefer teaching fundamentals on .223, then recoil management on .308 before moving to anything bigger.
If you can't practice how you need to perform, you won't perform. I know very few shooters who can actually put 20rds down range in a practice session with an unbraked winmag without fundamentals deteriorating into straight up bad form.
Also there's not a lot that needs bullet holes that a .308 isn't capable of handling.

I bet I could sell a MODERN WHEEL, and somebody would say this is the best version of the wheel ever! (Tell me, does this stabilize shooting through brush better, or not effected by wind)? NO, Then how is it better than my 1903 Springfield? Does it shoot better than my 1969 30-06 BAR?

It absolutely might perform better than either of those two rifles that you have. It may only be better by a margin, but rifle cartridges have developed for over 100 years since both of those two you mentioned came out. It goes without saying that they’re going to be better.

I really don't like the trend of manufacturer's painting their carbon fiber. The hunter had to do that as a necessity because carbon fiber shines when it's wet. Instead of manufacturer's actually improving the product, they blotch some paint on it for you. It just comes across as lazy.

7PRC is it the new 7mmMag? I don’t trust new caliber rifles. On a whim the rounds disappear from the shelves. And for how long? And I’ve already spent how much? Mine is now more of a decoration than a hunting rifle. Can’t even sell it. Maybe my great grandchildren when it gets old enough to be of some value again. But again as a wall decoration.
