    Who is Ron Spomer
    For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

    I’m a huge fan of Weatherby but I’ve sold two (Vanguard and Mark V) because they wouldn’t group. The barrel profiles are too darn skinny. It’s a very much one and done type deal. I’m sure if I went to hand loading they would, but after switching to a Benelli Lupo I am getting 0.75” groups with diff 150gr factory ammos all the time.

  • @davep2945
    @davep2945 7 месяцев назад +6

    Doesn't matter what anyone want's to think Weatherby is a reputable company and is well known for accurate rifles. That said, things can happen between leaving the factory and arriving on someones shooting bench. Even experienced shooters can make mistakes or overlook a simple issue. I had a local gun shop years ago mount and bore sight a scope for me on a rifle I knew to be a 1" group or less all day. But, of course, I couldn't leave well enough alone and had to try a new scope. Rifle wouldn't consistently shoot inside 3" after I got the new scope. So I removed it and found the gun shop tech had accidentally gotten a piece of metal filing under the front end of the scope and so it would shift under recoil just enough to throw off the aim. Got that sorted out and the rifle went back to shooting 1" groups. No improvement in the group size but boy was the sight picture a lot brighter and more clear. SO there could be a wide variety of issues at play here. Weatherby didn't just make up those targets so if the gun won't do the same when you receive it then something has changed along the way or as part of the process. A lot of whiny children in the comments pretending that because the one gun they bought from a specific manufacturer didn't have an issue that there could never be an issue with anyone particular gun from that manufacturer is ignorance at it's best. Funny how millions of people shoot sub MOA groups with Weatherby's, Remington's Tikka's, Savage's, Mossbergs, Winchesters and even lever action Marlins and Henry's yet the minority who can't always pop up in the comments to blame the manufacturer for making garbage because they don't know how to shoot.

      There you go, truth spoken

    • @BusterBibb
      @BusterBibb 7 месяцев назад +2

      I blame people that won’t secure their optics to their rifles to assure virtually stress scope mounting.
      I’ve seen arrogant Gunwerks owners that were simply horrible shooters. That being said..those claiming to shout 3” groups at 1,000 yards using Weatherby’s Vanguard..well…I needed a hood laugh .
      FYI…I’m not skert to put up my shooting accuracy with my upgraded Savages. But let’s face the facts..there’s not many that can accurately shoot at an animal either standing or sitting or squatting and not great even being prone. THAT!! takes lots or practice before a window of opportunity presents itself to shoot at an animal.
      Bench testing is SOP..but real hunting situations are completely different besides/before throwing in adrenaline rushes.
      So..what say ye..eh?

    • @davep2945
      @davep2945 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@BusterBibb Yep, real world hunting situations are rarely similar to bench conditions except for those who hunt exclusively from stands with a rifle rest. And if you need a second shot so many variables change between the first and second shot that unless your rifle won't put two shots on the end of a five gallon bucket then the shooter is going to be the biggest factor affecting accuracy. But everyone loves to blame the rifle when they miss. I have hunted with a couple of guys who were just very rough on their rifles and scopes and missed a lot of deer because of it. They would always blame the rifle which was certainly true, their rifles were horribly inaccurate, but it was their fault and they could not understand that. Heck, in another example of shooter error my brother in law had been in need of glasses for a long time and went two seasons without getting a deer despite several good opportunities. I asked him if he thought it was his vision. Nah, I can see alright, he'd say. Finally a fella he had hunted with since he was a kid flat out told him not to come out on his property anymore until he got his eyes checked because he was worried about him being so far off he endangered other hunters. Got his glasses and has been near perfect since then. Now he loves to tell people about how important it is to get your eyes checked. Ya think? Good guy but stubborn as a mule sometimes.
      As for Vanguards being used at 1000 yards I would doubt that. At least not consistently. Vanguards are hunting rifles not target machines. And anyone who shoots 1000 yards competitively is not using an off the shelf hunting rifle of any kind.

      You probably just weren't that good at shooting tight groups with such a lite rifle.
      Either way, you'd be more deadly with a great handling little rifle in the woods that shoots the 1 1/2 moa guarantee than something clumsier that shoots tiny groups.
      Number 1 thing always, is a consistent cold bore shot and a decent group after that, and you'll never miss inside 500yds because of the rifle.

    Ron, you should also get the ammo from the target data that came in the box and then shoot a box of each of those plus a box of the Sig ammo you shot in this video to confirm or deny the rifle’s capability.
    Statistically, we can’t really say it’s “a shooter” based on the data so far. Also, a rifle that shoots only one factory load well … maybe okay but definitely not great. I’d want to verify the accuracy of several different loads with at least 20 shots from each (with groups overlaid into 20 shot groups, not 3- 4- or 5-shot groups averaged).

      By all means one could, perhaps should, do this with his/her rifles, but this one's heading back to Wby. I've no real need to fine tune it to that degree. Video reviews like this are more informational than "confirmational," helping viewers to better understand rifles they may not have seen before. Anyone buying this model from Wby. might discover that their particular specimen shoots better or worse than this one with who knows which ammo/bullet.

    Check to see if the barrel is free floated. If not a right size socket and sand it open. Next hold the rifle strait up on a table and loosen the action screws there should be some up and down play bump the recoil pad on the table a few time and tighten the screws to 45 inch pounds and a little thread lock can help. I had a cheap bolt action that would not group. I cut ten patches of electrician black tape and put it on the back of the recoil lug and trimmed with a safety blade. It was a snug fit but the rifle started grouping real good. I left it like that did not want to bed the recoil lug and sold the rifle had a bad trigger pull and was boxed in and could not be adjusted so I sold it. It is true 50-100 rounds and copper up the barrel real good to smooth out the imperfections in the barrel. I don't strip out the copper until groups start opening up then clean and it will shoot poor until you put up 20 rounds through it. I don't like walnut stock even with the barrel free floated it will never hold a zero. All my bolt actions are in synthetic stocks with aluminum bedding. I have an 700 with H&S stock go shoot it two years after the last time and prints with a perfect zero. Sounds like a bedding issue. You should not lock your thumb around the the stock but rest it on the side to get a perfect trigger pull. My Ruger ranch rifle had a heavy trigger pull and the narrow forward stock made it hard to hold steady I added a trigger adjusted it down to two pounds and shot a lot better groups. The trouble with barrels they do not stress relieve barrels properly. I don't think your rifle was threaded sometimes an heavy muzzle break will improve the harmonics and shoot better. I like buying American so I shoot 700 but an Tikka you should not have problems. Some custom rifles that cost up to five thousand shoot 3/4 inch groups. I do reload and those low drag bullets to me are not as accurate and you have problems with twist rates with them. I am an 308 fan my 700 varmint 1-12 twist shoots 110 -168 great the 1-10 twist rifles I have 110 not so well. Looks like I wrote a book sorry about that.

    I had a similar frustrating experience, like your 30 06 experience. During load development, shooting small groups with odd fliers. It was very frustrating but once I shot over a dozen rounds at a single target it shot close to a two inch circle. What it turned out to be was a loose element in the scope.
    I know you had new scopes, but there could be a problem in the design or building of the scopes, that under recoil the elements of the lenses shift.
    I would try some groups with a different scope.
    Good Luck, love your program.

    The ogive and seating depth of the different bullet makes are the issue with the long throat Weatherby. Check the winning bullet's ogive with a comparator and use that seating depth to start the hand loads. I’d trade a guided Oregon Roosevelt elk hunt by me this year for that rifle.

      John, I'm not so sure the old "long throat" Wbys. apply to this rifle and/or chambering. No need for long throat to reduce pressures in a 30-06. But, yes, were I handloading for this, I'd tweak my seating depth for best accuracy. Not going to do this with a loaner already heading back. Cheers.

    When the barrel gets hot. The metal bends easier an you’ll get a bigger group. Every 4th shot was past THE temp at which acceptable deflection occurs during barrel whip.
    Gun designers can calculate the amount of deflection of the barrel at rest and simulated firing sequences. We’d like to keep it 1 moa. Bull barrels, fluted barrels, and short barrels provide better rigidity to resist deflection/ your group opening up, not just by the shooting heat but external factors.
    I cant tell you which is perfect but I can tell you what helps. We cant just build as thick short and fluted as we want bc of the obvious drawbacks to velocity, weight, and $ and time. We also have to consider carbon wrapped barrels have a ss liner and epoxy and carbon fiber layers. The different materials all behave differently under stress/strain and deflect differently and transfer heat at different rates. This is a mess and real world simulations are better. Carbon fiber likes tension/pulling but not compressing/squeezing. Opposite of concrete.
    The new ruger american gen 2 has a decent length barrel, good steel, stiff supports, but free floated, fluted to dissipate heat and reduce weight, WHILE still being thin and lightweight.
    Seems like a lot of design went into that choice because it also produces great accuracy across the board.

    I know its more relevant to a few videos back but when it comes to practicing to avoid a flinch, how can I tell if my gun is safe to dry fire without damaging anything?

    • @RonSpomerOutdoors-Podcast
      @RonSpomerOutdoors-Podcast 7 месяцев назад

      Virtually every centerfire bolt action of at least the past 50 years or so is safe to dry fire. The striker/firing pin is stopped within the bolt by an enlarged diameter on the shaft. The firing pin itself strikes nothing but air. Nevertheless, consult a competent gunsmith and or manufacturer. I think most manufacturers will say "use snap caps" just to cover their butts.

    So the rifle shot only 1 factory load of like 6 or 7 tested into like a .8” group not counting the flier 2” above the other 4. What happens when you cannot find that only factory ammo the rifle shoots barely decent? Or Sig changes something with the loading. I have seen far too many Weatherbys at the local range that shoot terribly.

      @RonSpomerOutdoors-Podcast 7 месяцев назад

      Four tested. Best group .664". If I owned this rifle I would, of course, do much more testing and load development. Might even free float the barrel. But it's sure showing potential and it meets the company guarantee.

    • @edburash7656
      @edburash7656 7 месяцев назад

      Ron…. 3 loads in the previous testing video and 2 in this one makes 5. Not a single one came even close to MOA. Even the Sig load has a flier that opened the group up to probably 1.5”. Did you feel that shot break high or did the rifle just send it up there? Weatherby is just relying on their name at this point.

    • @RonSpomerOutdoors-Podcast
      @RonSpomerOutdoors-Podcast 7 месяцев назад

      @@edburash7656 Yes, except the first 3 shots with the Sig ammo landed .664". Weatherby guarantees this rifle will shoot a sub MOA 3-shot group. The fourth shot went high, the fifth was right back in the 3-shot group. As many have pointed out, none of this shooting proves that this rifle is a consistent sub MOA shooter, but it has proven that the potential is there. It also illustrates how manufacuter's 3-shot MOA guarantees are essentially worthless. Even a blind hog finds an acorn now and then. But the three sub MOA 3-shot groups Wby. shipped with this rifle further suggest that it is capable of such performance when a good shooter (that may be my issue) and ammo handle it. With its new facility in Wyoming, its new M307 action, and its extensive range of new rifle models with a wide variety of shapes and materials, I don't see Weatherby as resting on its 20th century laurels. It seems to be surging ahead with innovation and all-American made products. I wish them well.

    Ron there is too much pressure up in the forearm area on that rifle. Some say that’s why they don’t like a wood stock but if the pressure is properly relieved the rifle should shoot better and maybe not?? One other thought is did you check the torque on the screws? If it’s not aluminum pillar then about 40-45 inch lbs. is where it should be.
