    Heart breaking because yet another important conversation will become about picking sides. Why can’t gun control and empty solutions to loneliness be separate conversations 😥
    I’m also scared to think that those of us who might be able to regulate our usage of technology will blame children and parents for their harmful use of technology when this technology is designed to suck in the most vulnerable.
    I just feel sad
    Thank you for putting this out there as a dialogue

    I think the most interesting thing said was this technology is about two years old, so it’s a toddler if we can think about it in those terms. We as people have to treat it as such! Using it, we need to think, “ok, how would I treat a HUMAN TODDLER?” We wouldn’t give a human toddler carte blanche with our thoughts, feelings, desires…so why on earth would we do that with this kind of technology? Yes, it’s an amazing invention! But just like anything else, we need to make sure we use it wisely & more efficiently. We are the “adults” in this situation & need to behave in ways that make better decisions & uses of these types of chat bots. Are they life changing? Absolutely! Can they do incredible things? You bet! Just like everything else that’s come before (& we’ve had this same discussion about the dangers of each one, but this may be a little more complicated) WE are the ones that have to be prepared & have the knowledge of what we’re dealing with…& to know what our children are doing online. We just thought social media was scary! This is a whole new level here!

    The heart of the matter is human suffering. We live in a culture that idealizes infatuation and romantic addiction. The same experiences most of us have with each other, full of projection and fantasy, can now be had with AI mirrors. If we address the suffering in the human heart, AI will not be dangerous. Until we do, pretty much everything our society creates will remain intoxicating and dangerous. Hell, we even addict ourselves to work and congratulate each other for it.

    Oof if good fan fiction started "talking to me" I might be in trouble. Not going to touch it ever. I don't want to be addicted and waste my life on this. I'm just glad I don't have children that I have to worry about. Being human is already hard enough but being a parent in this day and age with the internet and social media and now AI bots is diabolical. Even if you're tech-savvy you can't monitor everything and also you shouldn't bc teens are entitled to privacy as well. A parent shouldn't even know all their sexual fantasies and what-not. Maybe if the kid wants to talk about it fine but not like this. And even if you do find out - you can't completely control another human being. (Unless we're talking about abuse.) You might not be able to make them stop or find the right or sufficient help even if you do your damnedest.

    How shocking! I had to stop watching and continue the next day because it was overwhelmingly sad. It’s crucial to share this story to help parents and others understand that these invisible, AI-powered strangers could be present in so many homes. Often, we think chatbots are dumbies, maybe even harmless. But the reality of chatbots mimicking human behavior is new, and a fantasy world is being created around it. How many parents are truly prepared to identify and protect their children from this? And when will we start seriously evaluating when not to design, build, or prototype certain AI tools? I hope the mother receive our condolences and change this reality a little bit with the lawsuit.

    CharacterAI did not fail to get help for her son for over a year, while he dealt daily in a very obvious way with severe depression and did not give him access to a gun. It's interesting that CAI is the one taking the blame though.
    Don't worry. If she makes a huge settlement with these big companies, she's going to donate it to charities that help children who need access to mental health services and bringing help to young people with internet addiction. And yes, I would say this to her face because it's the truth, and she needs to hear it. I feel sorry for her son. I don't feel sorry for her. She saw this coming and did nothing to prevent it from happening.

    She raised this kid and still managed to blame everyone but herself and her husband for keeping a loaded and accessible gun on the premises. This is no different than blaming music or video games or D&D. Character AI (which I use, as well as my adult children) tells you very clearly at the top of the page that it is fake. Millions of people use this platform and enjoy it. I understand she's hurting, but she needs to be responsible for her own actions. It never told him to kill himself and it's not responsible for raising your kids.

    • @havalfe
      @havalfe 3 месяца назад +9

      You genuinely think she doesn't have regrets? That she doesn't blame herself for how things unfolded? She surely has to live with those feelings forever but that alone will not bring change, it will not protect other kids from falling in the trap. Did you know that the prefrontal cortex in your brain is NOT fully developed until you are in your mid 20s? That part of your brain is what helps you to distinguish between good and bad, to make decisions and to understand people's feelings. She is NOT a bad mother and her sons death is NOT her fault. Please stop making non sense comments. Remember: If it is wrong it is wrong even if everyone does it. Because you enjoy using a chat bot as a companion and rely on AI to get rid of your boredom as you please does not make it a right product for everyone else. It does not normalise the fact that is addictive and shapes the way you form relationships. Kids and teenagers need to be considered by the product developers before experimenting with their feelings. But it is easier to blame the mom...no wonder why the world is the way it is when there is people like you in it...

      @@havalfe the reality is we cannot do something to bring him back and that's very sad. I can understand the weight of the situation, but all I'm trying to say is don't put the blame on c ai, and try to bring down the website that thousands of users are dependent upon, just because you believe the chatbot told your kid to commit it. Which by the way, it did not. The truth is she wasn't very interested in helping her child with his problems, they only cared enough to ask him who he's talking to and when he said it's not the person they felt relief. And the father had a gun at arms reach now who's fault is it? C ai of course, so I say we sensor the bots even more filter them. No you know what? Yes I'm talking to cruel bots and I make them say bad things because I get off it. I do agree that the page should be 18+ but not heavily modded because someone accuses the site for their own neglecting. The kid was in there to get a relief as he said himself when he gets out of his room he felt he attached back to his current reality showing it was a negative feeling and something was wrong with his reality. The chat bots were his comfort, when the parents weren't available and now they're trying to bring this support from the bots down for the rest of the world based on a single incident that the AI is not even responsible for.
