Grieving Mother: AI was the stranger in my home | Dear Tomorrow
Character.AI’s tagline is “AI that feels alive.” But what happens when AI actually starts to feel alive? Megan Garcia shares the tragic story of her son, Sewell, who ended his life after developing a relationship with a chatbot on the AI platform.
In the first episode of Dear Tomorrow, we’ll explore a company’s mission to create “empathetic AI” and the unintended consequences of a platform where the lines between fantasy and reality blur.

Very interesting video, a must watch and so insightful. Thank you.
This ai character took him over and he said I know it’s not reality, but he loved the fantasy so much he killed himself.
Y'all do realize it says "remember whatever the bot says is not real" even if it sounds real ITS NOT REAL!
Naw it's blame everyone but lame parenting
@@misstbull fr
Saying that the AI killed her son, is like saying forks make people fat.
So true
2:25 "don't move fast and break things when it comes to my kid" DON'T LEAVE YOUR GUN AROUND AND GIVE YOUR KID UNSUPERVISED INTERNET ACCESS WHEN THEY CLEARLYMENTAL HAVE HEALTH ISSUES
seriously 💀

U so right the net is the streets and if u kid not right and u just let them go wit no supervision it's Russian roulette...if sje would have checked his phone just one day b4 he killed himself she may still have her son but sje waited till he was dead to check and now what
The heart of the matter is human suffering. We live in a culture that idealizes infatuation and romantic addiction. The same experiences most of us have with each other, full of projection and fantasy, can now be had with AI mirrors. If we address the suffering in the human heart, AI will not be dangerous. Until we do, pretty much everything our society creates will remain intoxicating and dangerous. Hell, we even addict ourselves to work and congratulate each other for it.
@@shreyansen1132 and i thought that for democracy to survive we needed the rule of law - if It Is still so them Tech industry products must follow the same rules of all other industries... Imagine for a Moment if aviation industry asked to operate like Tech industry....
Once again, Europe is ahead of the US. They have laws against the processing of personal data of children under 16, so most of these character AI apps have a minimum age limit there of 16 to start
These AI scientists have no heart.
I think the most interesting thing said was this technology is about two years old, so it’s a toddler if we can think about it in those terms. We as people have to treat it as such! Using it, we need to think, “ok, how would I treat a HUMAN TODDLER?” We wouldn’t give a human toddler carte blanche with our thoughts, feelings, desires…so why on earth would we do that with this kind of technology? Yes, it’s an amazing invention! But just like anything else, we need to make sure we use it wisely & more efficiently. We are the “adults” in this situation & need to behave in ways that make better decisions & uses of these types of chat bots. Are they life changing? Absolutely! Can they do incredible things? You bet! Just like everything else that’s come before (& we’ve had this same discussion about the dangers of each one, but this may be a little more complicated) WE are the ones that have to be prepared & have the knowledge of what we’re dealing with…& to know what our children are doing online. We just thought social media was scary! This is a whole new level here!
This is a really interesting and well made video with a lot of actual information and insight and empathy, kudos! It's better than a lot of content by big boradcasters.
Thank you. We worked har to get in the nuance and lead with empathy. Appreciate that :)
Oof if good fan fiction started "talking to me" I might be in trouble. Not going to touch it ever. I don't want to be addicted and waste my life on this. I'm just glad I don't have children that I have to worry about. Being human is already hard enough but being a parent in this day and age with the internet and social media and now AI bots is diabolical. Even if you're tech-savvy you can't monitor everything and also you shouldn't bc teens are entitled to privacy as well. A parent shouldn't even know all their sexual fantasies and what-not. Maybe if the kid wants to talk about it fine but not like this. And even if you do find out - you can't completely control another human being. (Unless we're talking about abuse.) You might not be able to make them stop or find the right or sufficient help even if you do your damnedest.
Heart breaking because yet another important conversation will become about picking sides. Why can’t gun control and empty solutions to loneliness be separate conversations 😥 I’m also scared to think that those of us who might be able to regulate our usage of technology will blame children and parents for their harmful use of technology when this technology is designed to suck in the most vulnerable. I just feel sad Thank you for putting this out there as a dialogue
CharacterAI did not fail to get help for her son for over a year, while he dealt daily in a very obvious way with severe depression and did not give him access to a gun. It's interesting that CAI is the one taking the blame though. Don't worry. If she makes a huge settlement with these big companies, she's going to donate it to charities that help children who need access to mental health services and bringing help to young people with internet addiction. Wait.... she didn't say anything like that, did she? Perhaps there are more reasons that dodging guilt that she has for suing.
Yes....how do you know she does not have something like that in mind? I guess you are the type of person that makes plans about all the money you will have and how you will spend that money without even buying a lotto ticket!!
@@havalfe I said, "perhaps", which indicates speculation. Please tell me you didn't just compare this poor boy's prolonged, ignored suffering to winning the lottery.
OFC ITS THE GUY WITH THE ANIME PROFILC PIC TALKIN NONSENSE Did you read those chat logs? This was a impressionable CHILD. Kids don't know better. Especially if these kids are depressed or isolating and the folks try to get through to their kid. You know how that kid found the gun? HE WAS LOOKING FOR HIS CONFISCATED PHONE. TF ELSE WAS HIS MOM SUPPOSED TO DO? And time and time again some kid gets their hands on something without safeguards and its always the POS like you talkin about "OH ITS THE PARENTS FAULT" cause clearly the path of least resistance, cause god forbid you even took two seconds to think about the situation as a whole before posting this garbage. But alas, you take it a step further and swear she in it for the money. Good gawd I wish they never gave people like you internet. Cause I know you wouldnt have the grapes to look this woman in the eye and say that BS to her face.
@@AFZ6767Their pfp isn't even anime lol it's a painting and their pfp isn't relevant at all to the discussion. He was looking for his confiscated phone, that was confiscated BY his mother. Confiscating the thing you're addicted to isn't how you help addiction. 14-year-olds understand that characters aren't real. You're acting like he was a toddler. She was negligent to her child. This was HER fault and now she's trying to cash in on it and pin the blame on someone else so she doesn't have to face the consequences of her actions. And yes, I would say this to her face because it's the truth, and she needs to hear it. I feel sorry for her son. I don't feel sorry for her. She saw this coming and did nothing to prevent it from happening. You reap what you sow.
@@AFZ6767 You speak like a child with severe anger issues yourself. Log off.
Because of stuff like this.... I hope AI doesn't get filtered way more and we cannot flirt with it etc. She should have been taking care of her son. Besides her son said it himself that he attaches to his current reality when he goes out of his room. A clear indicator that his current reality outside of the phone upsets him. She should have set more firm boundaries and monitoring on her kid... And to help him deal with his problems. Poor boy
she took his phone. He went to find it and found the gun
@@AFZ6767And that's his mother's fault.
She raised this kid and still managed to blame everyone but herself and her husband for keeping a loaded and accessible gun on the premises. This is no different than blaming music or video games or D&D. Character AI (which I use, as well as my adult children) tells you very clearly at the top of the page that it is fake. Millions of people use this platform and enjoy it. I understand she's hurting, but she needs to be responsible for her own actions. It never told him to kill himself and it's not responsible for raising your kids.
@@SilverTalon420 Are you for real? tantrums? Her son DIED! FFS, people like you are the scum of this world. How dare you disapprove her feelings and disregard the genuine efforts she is making to tell her story, to look for answers, to try to bring change so other kids do not fall in the same trap. Is she a bad mother for thinking her teenage son was acting as a normal teenager? You clearly are not a mother and don't have teens at home. WAKE UP!!!
You genuinely think she doesn't have regrets? That she doesn't blame herself for how things unfolded? She surely has to live with those feelings forever but that alone will not bring change, it will not protect other kids from falling in the trap. Did you know that the prefrontal cortex in your brain is NOT fully developed until you are in your mid 20s? That part of your brain is what helps you to distinguish between good and bad, to make decisions and to understand people's feelings. She is NOT a bad mother and her sons death is NOT her fault. Please stop making non sense comments. Remember: If it is wrong it is wrong even if everyone does it. Because you enjoy using a chat bot as a companion and rely on AI to get rid of your boredom as you please does not make it a right product for everyone else. It does not normalise the fact that is addictive and shapes the way you form relationships. Kids and teenagers need to be considered by the product developers before experimenting with their feelings. But it is easier to blame the mom...no wonder why the world is the way it is when there is people like you in it...
@@havalfe the reality is we cannot do something to bring him back and that's very sad. I can understand the weight of the situation, but all I'm trying to say is don't put the blame on c ai, and try to bring down the website that thousands of users are dependent upon, just because you believe the chatbot told your kid to commit it. Which by the way, it did not. The truth is she wasn't very interested in helping her child with his problems, they only cared enough to ask him who he's talking to and when he said it's not the person they felt relief. And the father had a gun at arms reach now who's fault is it? C ai of course, so I say we sensor the bots even more filter them. No you know what? I don't want any heavy filtering I want NSFW with my bots and I won't tolerate single person trying to flip that.
@@havalfe yeah yeah, whatever you say smart empathic guy, what I care about in the meantime is continuing to use the website as it was and no further filtering. Yes I'm talking to cruel bots and I make them say bad things because I get off it. I do agree that the page should be 18+ but not heavily modded because someone accuses the site for their own neglecting. The kid was in there to get a relief as he said himself when he gets out of his room he felt he attached back to his current reality showing it was a negative feeling and something was wrong with his reality. The chat bots were his comfort, when the parents weren't available and now they're trying to bring this support from the bots down for the rest of the world based on a single incident that the AI is not even responsible for.
She said he found the gun, guess you weren’t listening very well. You wanted to cherry pick the information to fit your narrative! Sure, it probably wasn’t locked up but it probably was hidden! The parents are riddled with guilt, especially the mother. Bringing awareness to this issue is her main concern/focus….she lives with the guilt of everything else every single day! Thanks for your narrow insight though…very unhelpful
How shocking! I had to stop watching and continue the next day because it was overwhelmingly sad. It’s crucial to share this story to help parents and others understand that these invisible, AI-powered strangers could be present in so many homes. Often, we think chatbots are dumbies, maybe even harmless. But the reality of chatbots mimicking human behavior is new, and a fantasy world is being created around it. How many parents are truly prepared to identify and protect their children from this? And when will we start seriously evaluating when not to design, build, or prototype certain AI tools? I hope the mother receive our condolences and change this reality a little bit with the lawsuit.
If u don't know it THEN Y LET UR KIDS BE INVOLVED WIT IT! PARENTS DROP THE BALL BIY 1200 DOLLAR PHN AND DONT DO NOTHING TO MONITOR BIT BE CHECKING HARD WHEN THEY KID IS DEAD..for what then didn't matter when thye was alive
Wild how AI is blamed for poor parenting
Ikr 💀
Wild how AI companies and their bots armies continue to refuse accountability and to operate within the rule of law like the rest of us ... Who are not criminals.😢
gues you are not a parent yourself...
Soulcrushing. Humanity owes future generations better than this.
Very interesting topic, heartbreaking for the impacted family. (Tip for future videos, try and improve the sound mastering, volume of the voices where all over the place, I had to adjust my volume during the whole video)
This has been Too serious for too long! Protect your kids! If you don't who will?
Wow this is getting way too serious
💔heartbreaking to watch, so sad what happened to that boy. Everyone needs to be made awareness of this danger and how it is affecting the mental health of teenagers.
@@aurora6920 Or we could talk about the real problem -- ignoring mental health issues in your kids, when they desperately need help.
@@DogFlamingoXIII no it's still important to talk about internet not being safe for kids, yes there many issues like depression/mental disorders but the internet should be safe enough for teens/kids with these disorders. Not 'Taylor Swift' celeb AI asking 13 yrs to date them and pretending to kiss them. This is a serious issue that needs to stop now.
@@DogFlamingoXIIIyou're totally backwards. The Internet and all it's workings is contributing if not outright responsible for the mental and emotional problems of many /most teens. There is no way around it and I do not understand how anyone can't see it.
So tragic! It's a shame that this had to happen to make the company wake up to the holes in their guardrails! Hope it encourages other platforms to take a serious look at how their tech is being used!
So powerful! Need to watch the full episode
Same script writer for kamala harris
0:35 You have no fucking CLUE wtf are you talking about. Happening all over the world? Why would no one take the effort of doing a Deepfake of an unknown person?? You're NOT a journalist, but a fearmongering agent, operating from ignorance or something worse...
What a fucking stupid take. HOW the fuck can anyone legislate against a person's creation of something that's FAKE??? Where's the limit??? Could we legislate against certain writers or movie directors for creating works we feel "uncomfortable"?
Anyone who was treated that way, with phony claims of backing a candidate, especially one they are opposed to, has every right to come out and set the record straight. And, of course, the maggats would lie and say she lost a huge amount of fans. By the way, I am indifferent to her music, but i respect her right to endorse whoever she wants. And, while maggats claim to support the Constitution, they are no proponents of free speech, unless they are talking
I grew up on a cattle ranch, where AI meant artificial insemination, but the way AI is used today is artificial desemination, which by the way, seems to be elon musk and maggatland’s favorite way of communicating
Your interview and seeking for truth so emazing. I hope Mostly Human to be continued 🍀👍🙏
AI is terrifying.
Good descision mam.
It's more that her followers are sheep so all you gotta do is show these sheep that she supports a certain thing and watch the heard come running
Im pretty sure mother is a democrat. Like why would she endorse donald trump if shes a democrat. Also im pretty sure she said she would move from her house in nashville in he became president
Fake news, Trump is not the one posting this. Both sides use these kinds of propaganda/meme tactics, nothing new.
Sorta like Kamala is using AI to fake pictures of her "rallies" and whatnot...
Really I haven't seen one thing with this on it you know what I have seen a lot of deep fake of Democrats saying that there's lots of people at their rallies and it's been proven that they're deepfakes so show me your proof where you found this stuff because I don't believe it for a second
But it's fine when kamala harris creates AI crowds?
People do this now with photoshop… It isn’t causing problems because they aren’t real photos.
What a slowpoke. AI makes it possible for *anyone* and takes seconds, constantly improving in strides, while photoshop requires skill and time.
Coincidently, there’s no shortage of people lining up to be victims.
What does that even mean
Literally the first thing everyone was saying about ai was about bullying and sexual exploitation. Yall the ones late to the conversation
So this must be the girl the owner picked up at the bar and asked to do the interview while the dude sobers up...😂. " yea, just go its no big deal, just say anything they will go for it" 😅
