Glad to see you test these variables that can alter your stats. I'd love a follow-up video where you test different watch bands and their snugness to see how accurate the heart rate is. For example, a traditional watch band has holes that a pin goes through, but that's not a perfect solution as there is a several mm difference that can make the band too snug or too loose. Using a magnetic band or velcro one, you can get it comfortably snug. I've seen a lot of people complain their heart rate tracking is wrong when their bands are comfortably loose.
I wonder whether if when you have an iPhone in your pocket and you’re wearing an Apple Watch in a horizontal position (like pushing a pram or a bicycle) Apple is smart enough to notice a discrepancy between the step count on the phone and on the watch and if so how they deal with it.
I’ve recently switched from a Versa 2 to a Apple Watch se and the difference in steps counted between them on an average working was really different. But I’d already noticed my Fitbit counting my commute to work by bike as steps and even noticed it going up when I was sitting down driving a forklift. Step count on my Apple Watch on an average working day seems to be around 13,000/14,000 steps when the Versa 2 was regularly above 22,000/23,000 steps

Great discussion of the topic. For further tests we suggests to test also Garmin watches with the protocol indoor walking, which counts also steps from the wrist, the android app a training tracker, which counts steps from a foot pod. The great thing about foot pods is that they can be calibrated. We are convinced that foot pods will win the competition. Also interesting would be to compare a Stuntoo foot pod which needs calibration vs a Stry foot pod which does not need calibration. There is a whole science around step counting. We suggest also to review the latest papers about step counting algorithms.
I have used a pro fit and wondered if the Apple Watch would track my steps differently, and there is over a 1000 steps different, I don’t know how to interpret this yet

This is so interesting to me as a person who is learning to walk again after a spinal cord injury! I am using a frame to walk at the moment and wanted to get an Apple Watch but knowing it won’t count my steps as much with my frame is great to know!
Erg leuk kanaal! Wanneer komt de video met de beste slaap apps voor de Apple Watch 6? Ik denk dat mn keuze volledig van jouw test af gaat hangen namelijk!
I just started a new job and when I first started my watch was saying I was walking 5-6 miles a day and the last few days it says I am only walking about half that distance and yesterday I know I walked over 6 miles but my watch only says about half but I just got a tool cart that I have been pushing everywhere today I will keep my phone in my pocket and see if that helps with the step counting instead of putting it on the cart.
Did you have your iPhone in your pocket when you ran these tests? I recently discovered that it pulls data from both devices and tries to sync them. For me, my iPhone was counting steps as I bounced my legs while sitting, iPhone in my pocket, even though I was wearing an Apple Watch.
If it is always about half and not sometimes crazy random all over the place numbers on different times then it's easy to look at what it counts while walking holding bike and just double it pretty much.
Why does my iwatch “steps” still working even if I’m driving, and also the “stand” problem even im just sitting its just calculated as standing please help.
Verstehst du was ich meine ?
3:37 for the bike/stroller/shopping cart scenario, does having your iPhone in your pocket help? In other words, even though your watch is stationary while pushing something, the iPhone will make up for all the steps that the Watch can't count, so everything ends up being ok?
Hey, Rob - do you know how the steps are counted and calibrated? As a woman, I know I take 3 steps to my husband's two because he has long legs and I'm short. Will my step count be underestimated because of this and is there any way to adjust it? Could you ask a small female friend to take the test for accuracy, please? Thanks for all you do.
Thanks for this video. What I find so inaccurate on my Apple Watch is counting floors. It always counts less than i climb. I have a FitbitOne which is a clip on and is always accurate with steps and stairs. Unfortunately it’s old and don’t hold a change like it used to and they don’t make that model anymore. .
i assume you do not wear your iphone when doing this either i'm looking to replace i watch i have i think in given day it records less steps and flights of stairs i climb . maybe cause my iwatch belongs in museum
Hi Alex! I always started the activity when in came to sports. For cycling outside I did not, I could indeed try and see if this made a difference. But, to answer your questions: during weight lifting and indoor cycling the Apple Watch knew I was doing these activities, and still counted some steps. Thanks for your comment, and have a great day! Cheers, Rob😀
@@TheQuantifiedScientist I wrote about this: www.linkedin.com/pulse/apple-increasing-step-count-floors-climbed-while-cycling-murillo/ Even if you put the Apple Watc in "cycling mode", it counts steps
If you set it to cycle tracking, does it still count steps? I've heard some of the other trackers will still count steps on a bike even if it's in cycle tracking mode.
Thanks a lot for your test! Only thing: Where are the results for the laundry folding? Did I miss these? I would be interested the most in these, as all the other situations are basically real activities which would maybe justify counting some steps. I have found that my Apple Watch counts steps as soon a as I move my arm, even when I am sitting playing cards, using a touch screen or driving a car!
In these situations in which your hand is still but you are walking, to improve the reading of the steps you just have to have your iPhone in your pants pocket. With the movement of your legs when you walk, the iphone will tell you those steps that the Apple Watch cannot count when you cannot move your hand.
Wow a lot of work went into this … can’t find the part about false steps when doing laundry or other activities where your arm has significant movement while you are standing still.
I like your scientific review methods. What about doing a review of the heart rate accuracy of the Apple watch SE? I know you've done a review of the series 6 but the heart rate of the Apple watch SE is different from the series 6, so a review of the SE will be quite nice
Nice video Rob... but do you think it would be there any differences with other Apple watches ? since they have almost same accelerometer & gyroscope ... I mean series 3 and later
Thanks for your videos. I have noticed that sometimes my Apple Watch misses my standing if I’m cooking a meal - then I sit down and it reminds me to stand! I then shake my wrist vigorously while still sitting, it will not only give me the stand hour, but also add steps - even though my legs and feet aren’t moving! In this way it can be inaccurate. Strangely I often find that the activity app and pedometer app on Apple Watch disagree on my step count by several hundred steps at the end of a day Pedometer is more generous.
Superinteresting! Would be very nice if you tested polars wrist based heart beat tracker (precision prime exists in their vantage models) that polar claims to be very exact.
I love the statistics you use in your videos! For testing different arms and movements for step count, would you say the bike step count is similar to holding your phone while walking? asking for a friend lol

Firstly, a wonderful and detailed review. Great to see that the Apple Watch is really accurate. Question though: Wonder if you start an 'Outdoor Walk, open goal,' when setting out, if it counts steps more accurately even if you are pushing a bike or a stroller? Afterwards, you get a GPS-mapped route of your walk (quite cool). Meaning, if you tell the Apple Watch what activity to focus on does it do a better job of counting steps even if you're pushing something on wheels? And, further, curious as to how accurate the programs the Apple Watch offers as counters of steps or kilometers biked or whatever is being measured in that activity?
Thanks a lot for your videos. They really help deciding which gadget is actually helpful. I use it for sports, I sleep with it, pulse, oxygen ... I don't have many notifications activated, AOD activated and as watch face I select something very simple, just to see the time. Siri disabled because it's rubbish anyway.
