    It is CRAZY how the AW’s sleep stage tracking can be so accurate considering how infrequently the AW measures heart rate during the night. This indicates that wrist movement on its own is a great proxy for sleep stages. A perfect example of machine learning opening humans’ eyes to the potential of hidden correlations. Regarding GPS tracking, I think that for running Apple is relying more on the accelerometer to measure distance and pace than on GPS. Whoever has used the Stryd pod knows that accelerometers are better than GPS.

    • @Mehwhatevr
      @Mehwhatevr 2 года назад +1

      It does make sense, the GPS can only be so accurate and won’t pick up on if you’re not walking or running in a straight line

    • @ericy1005
      @ericy1005 2 года назад +14

      I've never used Apple products but it may be time to ditch the Android and Fitbit. Fitbit wants to charge monthly premiums for what's basically bad data. Apple has obviously put a lot of time and money into their health metrics on their AW. It's very impressive to see what they're able to do with sensor data on your wrist. I wish the battery life was better and it's cool that the AW Ultra has extended battery but my guess is they need to burn more power to get good sensor data. If you don't have good sensor data how can you have any kind of accurate health metrics? Apple is not only getting good data but they're figuring out how to write the software to use it most effectively. It's very impressive and I think it's time for me to just bite the bullet and learn how to use Apple products.... And how about this guy's channel? Apple should be paying him because he's not a fanboy and is simply showing their product capabilities. It's actually crazy how much better Apple is than Garmin and Fitbit when it comes to accuracy.

    I follow you since the very beginning and think you’re the best wearable reviewer out there, especially for the accuracy of your scientific and statistical approach.
    However, for the sake of the quality of your videos, I would really appreciate to see bigger samples in your “full scientific reviews”. For example, a sleep monitoring test with a sample of two nights may be more appropriate for an “early scientific review”.
    I know the new Apple Watches have just been released and it’s a very hot topic right now, but on the other hand it’s difficult to understand the overall precision of a tracker in so little time.
    I’m writing this “critical” comment because I really think your videos are the gold standard for any wearable user!

  • @Bushidounohana
    @Bushidounohana 2 года назад +5

    Thank you again for your work! In the spirit of most scientific methodology-do you account for different bands across Apple Watches, or do you use a standard, single band for all testing to equalize any potential fitting differences which might impact accuracy rather than the sensors themselves tracking differently? Put another way, you do standardize Apple Watch testing using a single band for all testing, or has each Apple Watch been tested with different band types inserting potential differences in fit across tracking? Given that all Apple Watches seem to perform similarly, I imagine the difference may not be huge, but I wonder how it may alter results (one way or another), if at all?

    Thanks for your amazing videos! I have used a Fitbit inspire 2 for a few months, I am mainly interested in sleep tracking. I have now purchased an Apple Watch SE (WatchOS 10) because, according to your tests, it seemed more precise on sleep tracking. Since a few days, I am testing both devices when I sleep (one per wrist) and, at least for recognizing awake time, in my experience the Fitbit works better: when I am in bed, trying to get asleep, breathing deeply, both the devices tend to mistake this as "light sleep" (even if I am sure I am awake), for the AW, however, this error seems much more evident.
    Also, during the night, the Fitbit record several micro awake periods that AW does not, I can't say which device is wrong, though.
    Any comments, advice or settings I could have missed? I am thinking about returning the AW (I am not very interested in the other smartwatch features) and continue using the Fitbit but I would like to be sure I am using the most reliable sleep tracker of the two. Thanks again!

      @@India_first-k6n I do love my Apple Watch. It does really help me manage my disability pretty well. The steps issue is the only thing that iv’e noticed, but I just ignore them. I should submit feedback to Apple

      @@WheelieGayJay hey, don't call yourself disabled. I didn't say anything because I don't want to sound cliche and all but I really admire you. And okay, I will buy one, probably SE 2 since it fits my budget well and only recently I bought iphone 13 also so am very new to the ecosystem. Can you please reply one last time about battery life? I mean I know the watch has to be charged daily but what I mean is that the watch will last 2-3 years right? I am not rich or above middle class so if I invest good amount of my money, I would appreciate if the product lasts for some time.
      :)

    Hey, great content, thanks! Just wondering, did you ever do some research on the ECG and Bloodpressure functions? For many people I think it would be quite relevant before buying.

    Hi Rob, I am totally impressed by the work you are doing. Could you add a short information to your reviews on how long the battery lasts during your tests and how often you need to recharge the batteries? One sentence and your subjective opinion would be absolutely enough. I think then your tests would be complete.

    I think you should also update the Apple Watch 7 to watch OS 9 and retest s7 again, so all the Apple Watch are in same firmware

    I came across your channel and since I am data scientist I am in love with your tests and graphs. I have a question for you, Is it worth it to pay extra just for the ECG, Spo2 and temperature sensors on the Apple Watch 8 given that I am male. I mostly care about health, sleep and fitness.

    I like your channel because you show actual facts if the claims of the watch are actually accurate!
    I don't like tech influencer speaking only about personal opinions on a device.

    Great videos. I’m considering an Apple Watch Series 8 or SE. I’m 70 yrs. old so I want to track my Health and Sleep. Apple states on their Store site that one of the differences is “ ECG app, With the ECG app, Apple Watch is capable of generating an ECG similar to a single-lead electrocardiogram. “ Is this important IYO?

    I rarely subscribe to youtubers much less comment, but your approach to review is what I was exactly looking for! It helped me chose this watch for me and my dad. Tysm!
    I would also like to request, is it possible to retest the older version of the apple watches since, it can be that better tracking might also be a result of new os 9 which might have under the hood improvements for new and refined algorithm for sleep tracking? Would love to see that comparison!
    Anyways cheers mate! Keep those reviews coming

    Got a brand new Apple Watch SE 2nd Gen for $150...waiting on it being delivered. My primary hope is to replace my Garmin Forerunner, which I use for all of my running. The only thing I'm a little worried about is the battery life of the SE 2. Outside of that, it just seems in every capacity it's a far better watch from a running/fitness perspective than any of the low-range Garmin (e.g., like the forerunner 45). Plus, all of the integrative features within the Apple ecosystem for productivity and general use with my iPhone.
