    I have to say thank you for the level of commitment that you and Capture One have to presenting so much information for the users. I just purchased Capture One last week as part of my move to Fujifilm GFX and X-T platforms. Capture One is clearly way ahead of Lightroom in both rendering images and functionality.

    Hello David. Coming from aperture. Yes my catalog out grew my internal (pictures folder) HD space. I am confused as to where the actual images are living ? If I am importing into the internal pictures folder internal HD (because that is the fastest hard drive) Where is the catalog living with the edited final files ? isnt that the same thing Ive been doing with aperture and outgrowing my internal HD space ? Also, shooting sessions with tethered or SD card reader. Do I just ad a folder inside a catalog ? I am a bit lost . Could you please help me understand these missing steps that I am just not understanding ? Thank you very much

    David, what a great review! You have cleared up some of 'my' misconceptions. First, that you 'can't..search across Projects'. I see that you can do this by searching across 'All Photos' even though they may in different Projects. And, I thought that Project location was inviolable. Not so. These can be placed within Groups. And you confirmed that it makes sense to combine all photos into one Catalog. I have been separating catalogs by Year and want to combine them all into one Master Catalog--and delete the original catalogs so as not to take up extra space on my internal SSD. I reference all images on an external SSD. The key here is that once the original catalog has been imported to the new catalog, I can just go to my Mac Finder in 'Pictures' and delete the original catalog. So, I will start the process to import each of the last 4 year's catalog into one new one-- creating a Group for each year. And last, you crystalized that EVERYTHING in the Catalog hierarchy is 'virtual' using the same referenced file, without duplication; while everything in the Folder hierarchy is specific and directly tied to the actual file and locations.
    Thank you.

    Photos on a NAS drive and catalog on a cloud storage. So you have local access to the catalog and same access path to the Photos. Use this setup for switching between two Macs and it works perfectly. Additionally synced the home/library folder from C1 via cloud storage for C1 settings.

    How did you name your external drive "Traveler's SSD?" I named my external drive in Windows and followed this video to import from my memory card and copy the the photos to the external drive.
    Everything worked perfectly for me, just like in the video (it made all the subfolders and renamed the file names for my 600 sd card camera pictures); however, in the library part of Capture One Pro, it only shows the location as a drive letter E. (It doesnt show the name I gave to the external drive in Windows prior).

    This is very useful. I only use sessions but now I d like to create a catalogue to archives all the select folders from the multiple sessions. How would you go about it? Another question. When you release the next version, how to you keep « user collections » from the old to new version of C1? Thanks

    • @CaptureOne

      User collections are a part of the document you use (catalog/session). When you upgrade to a newer version, you can open that document and upgrade the database. So you'll have the same document with the same collections in the newer version.

    Great tutorial - Thanks David! At 48 mins, you're using Smart Albums to collect 5* images. However, unlike the other collection albums, the Smart Album doesn't seem to indicate the number of images that have ended up in the Smart Album. Although not essential, it would be handy to see if any images are in there without having to actually go into it.

    A really useful video David, I'm still torn between Sessions and Catalogs. Coming from LR I'm used to catalogs, but have started making more use of sessions, I can see myself using both.
    One question. If I set a collection in my catalog as the 'selects collection', how do I stop it being the 'selects collection' without making another collection the 'selects collection', in other words how do I go from having a 'selects collection' to not having one. Sorry for the clumsy wording.

    • @CaptureOne
      @CaptureOne  3 года назад +1

      Try creating an album and assign it as a Selects Collection. Then delete it. This way you will get rid of the test album and your initial Selects Collection will no longer be the one.

    is there a performance bump in using an NVME over an SSD when viewing images within a catalogue? Also what is a realistic catalogue size before it begins to slow down?

    • @CaptureOne
      @CaptureOne  3 года назад +1

      Hi Seamus, there shouldn't be any performance issues as long as these are connected to the motherboard directly (at times USB connection can be much slower).
      While there is no limit on the number of images you can put into a catalog, catalog performance depends on available system resources and read/write speeds. It’s impossible to recommend a specific size as there are a lot of different factors to take into account here, including hardware, image size and location, preview size, amount of adjustments and number of collections/albums.

    At 8:14 you say "If your preview size is too small C1 will have to read the RAW every time you switch to a new picture". This feature works at speeding up the display of the pictures somewhat, but the experience is still far from perfect on my M1 mac mini 16GB which is a very recent machine. If I press the arrow keys slowly to go to the next / previous picture I get no flash, but if I click around with the mouse in an album, I get a flash where the pic is blurry and usually misaligned along with the spinning wheel at the top, for about 1 second. One second is not very slow but still very distracting. Aperture had a nice feature where you would see spinning wheels the first time you opened a picture in the session but then once loaded you'd be able to display them instantly without any flash or spinning wheel of any kind. I think they were caching the previews in RAM. That aperture browsing experience was really nice and I feel like C1 is still not where Aperture was many years ago on much slower machines in terms of browsing experience.

    Morning- was referred to this webinar. Problem I'm having in the Folders area is that if I'm clicking through Catalogued folders (including subfolders), after one or two folders invariably the displayed folder changes from solid orange to outlined orange. Abruptly (without warning or 'do you want to do this...') the folder is moved. When I find the subfolder that's been moved -and is now a sub-sub folder elsewhere, I want to move it back to it's original location. However an error "the action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open another program." How do I fix this and is there a functionality here that I should be aware of? I want to click through the Folders area without relocating/moving folders/subfolders... especially with no warning.
    Otherwise enjoying getting to know the tools and functionality and appreciate these webinars.

      Guessing from lack of response that this might be a local issue not necessarily connected to Capture One. I'm running Windows 10 and if it's relevant, iCloud is also accessing/backing up certain locations, which may explain the ' ... open in another program" error. Stopping iCloud service seemed to free up folder move outside of Capture One, but Capture One still hangs while trying to prepare images for a folder which no longer exists. Have also reported in 'Unexpected Exit from last run'.

      Hi!
      Sorry it took some time, but I have an answer for you.
      The folders will only change and move if you actively click and drag them, and I assume you do this by mistake. But we do have a warning about this. If you do not see that warning, it means you disabled it.
      To re-enable it, you need to go to the Preferences window, under the Warnings tab.
      The reason why you cannot move the folder back, is because the Operating System is blocking you. This could be because of your cloud sync.
      If none of the things I have suggested you work, please contact customer support, so the can help you with your settings.

    David, The claims made in your video are fine for an import collection of 148 images plus one variant. Please repeat it for a collection of 40,000 images. Your reply to one question on whether to create individual year catalogs was that there was no benefit. There absolutely is every benefit to keeping your catalogs as small as practical. Your 'All Images' view - of 148 images - appeared instantaneously. You did not make people aware that if they have a collection numbering tens of thousands of images the time taken to have that collection appear is measured in many, many minutes. As you know already, my own 40K collection takes almost 8 minutes to appear and my experience is shared by very many users. Your video omits that piece of information. This problem is common and has been present for easily over three years. In response to my ticket, you told me that you knew there was an issue but declined to advise whether you were even planning to resolve it. One wonders that if a problem has existed for over three years whether there is any intention to resolve. One must draw ones own conclusions.

    I have a catalog with 40.000 pictures in albums. Each album is on a local hard drive. Now this hard drive is getting old and fails sometimes. How on earth can I get my photos to another hard drive whilst maintaining link and edits?

    Hi guys, I am considering C1 to keep my pics organised. Would you know if it is possible to use a NAS (Synology in my case) to stroke the photos & database? Is C1 bringing facial recognition soon? (Synology photos offers this feature). Thank you

    • @CaptureOne
      @CaptureOne  2 года назад +1

      Yep, no reason why you could not use your NAS. I can't give you a firm answer on facial recognition but it's always worth making a feature request at support.captureone.com

      @@CaptureOne thanks. Good to hear I can leverage the NAS. I will 2x check if the feature is on the roadmap. Last time I googled it didn't seem to be but I didn't have much time to check all the links (latest was from 2020...things may have changed)

    Does anybody know how do to do any of this between catalogs? None of the folder or file moving capabilities are available moving from catalog A to catalog B. You can not drag and drop folders or files.

    Will a smart album based on let's say a specific lens automatically "scan" my images as I import new ones and add the images with matching criteria as I do that?

    • @CaptureOne
      @CaptureOne  3 года назад

      Sure, it will - just make sure to not create a Smart Album in a Project or a Group, so it can scan all images/collections.

    Hi David, using albums with variants is not logical to me. For my oppinion, an album contains the pictures I selected. make an example: I have 10 pictures adapted it for clarity, brightness... , Now I like to have these pictures in an album for e.g. Instagram, and because 8 of the picture I like to have it in an album for e.g. DiaShow. And because of a needed adaption of the size for instagram I like to use variants of the10 pictures. But as soon as I select the variants to bring it into the album, all of the pictures are there, the main ones and the variants. and same if I add 8 of them into my DiaShow album. So unfortunatly I cannot differentiate easily which one has been adapted for Instagram and which one for Diashow.
    Some colleagues of you mentioned to use keywords etc... but honest, it may help me now, but in half a year I have to remember how I did it. So I would appreciate to see exactly the pictures/variants the the album I need for and I have choosen for it, otherwise I have to know which filter to use for an e.g. export. I compare it also with a physical album, where I will have excactly one picture there not a main and there variants..
    Nevertheless, thank you very much for your very good webinars and explanations.

    Is there any need and therefore way to „reorganise“ the database after having deleted lots of images? I deleted lots of old images I don’t need anymore, but the database stayed the same size as before, so I kinda wondered.

    • @CaptureOne
      @CaptureOne  3 года назад

      There's a chance you are importing images inside the catalog as opposed to keeping them in their original location. Also, previews take a large chunk of the space, so it is recommended to clean up the Previews folder.

    Where are the adjustments saved ? Can they be saved into an xmp file ?

    • @CaptureOne

      Adjustments are not saved in XMP. They reside in a folder inside the catalog, or, if you are using sessions, in a Capture One folder next to the RAW images.

    Great tutorial. One question if anyone can help - is it possible to remove a user collection without removing the photos, or to remove a photo from the collection without removing it from the folder? I just managed to delete a load of variants by back spacing thinking I was just removing them from the collection (as per Lightroom), but they then disappeared from the folders too. (Thanks heavens for CMD Z!)
    Edit - having played some more, I think it is only variants that get deleted, not the original files when you press backspace.

      If you are using a Catalog, then the image is being moved to Trash folder. You can easily drag it to a different collection, though.

    Capture One should team up with Google Photos - so you could use the C1 edits but the Google Photos search and manage.

    "Tidy up this area" by throwing albums, projects into groups would be a nice idea. IF THAT BLOODY SOFTWARE COULD FIND THEM AGAIN! No full text search to find album names, project titles, it's not even possible to use the album names in smart album conditions. Such a poorly done DAM is what worries me to continue using C1. What you call "tidy up", David, is just cluttering stuff into hidden and "super hard to find again" substructures. Really, as good as you guys are in RAW conversion and editing, Capture One as company simply sucks in terms of proper organisation of images! And version 16 didn't change it a single bit. Disappointing!

    I love Capture One for the tethering, the edit layering and a few other tools. By when are you going to sort out the appalling, disgraceful joke of database management. I cannot believe its so bad and the developers have not fixed it. The C1 forums are filled with complaints from years ago that haven't been solved.
    Someone from C1 team, please tell me why Smart folders are so bad. They don't seem to cache, and have to rebuild on every load, or sometimes even going back to it after a few minutes.
    - and deleting hangs C1 for seconds or even minutes before it kicks into life.
    Please stop avoiding this - do a video on the above issues for starters.
