    Really informative, thank you. I just bought a beautiful 1930s brooch off eBay which is a little grungier than I realized, and wasn't sure how to clean it. Love your cocktail cabinet, too!

    Thanks for the info. I'm finding brooches made with sterling silver of this era to be a real hassle to clean/polish the tarnish. Do you have any techniques for this? I'm starting to think that pot metal or vermeil plated SS is the way to go & should just avoid SS rhinestone jewelry.

    • @bobbyjoechristensen
      @bobbyjoechristensen  Год назад

      Sterling costume jewelry is usually of better quality than plated jewelry but the tarnishing can be a pain. I like to use a fine silver polish to deep clean then a polishing cloth for maintenance polishing. To lessen the effects of oxidation/tarnish store your silver jewelry wrapped in felt or in a tarnish resistant jewelry box to keep the air off of it. Hope this helps.

    Sir, I use a sharp paring knife to dig the old silvering in the cups, it does a much better/faster job.

    Your smile is contagious ✨ Question, I’m looking into buying vintage CHANEL sunglasses (style 5060-b) and they have rhinestones on the side but most pairs I’ve found, the stones have turned yellow. How can I make them sparkle again?

    • @bobbyjoechristensen
      @bobbyjoechristensen  3 года назад

      I've found that often it is a thin layer of glue that has been applied over the top of the rhinestones that has yellowed due to UV (sunlight) exposure. Sadly the only way I know to remedy this is to very gently scrape the glue off of the stones with an x-acto blade being very careful not to scratch the stones, or to remove the stones and replace them.

    Love how gentle you are with the jewelry. So many on here throw drop toss and inproperly clean their "haul". Also so many "resellers" aka treasure hunters are devaluing plastic jewelry that sells retail for a significant amount of $$. And they sell precious metal single earrings as scrap instead of as single earrings. Frustrating to watch. You should address these resale faux paws in your videos. Also, when not to clean an antique piece.

    Great video bb - I didn’t even think to use windex to clean the stones! What would you suggest to help brighten up the gold/brass around the stones?

    • @bobbyjoechristensen
      @bobbyjoechristensen  3 года назад

      I use a polish called Simichrome. Any gentle non-abrasive polish will work, just be sure to test it on the back first to make sure it wont take off the delicate plating. Sometimes just the friction of a bare cotton swab will do the trick.

    My grandmother recentlt died at 96 years old. She had lots of costume jewelry from the 30s 40s and 50s. No one in the family really wanted it. I rescued a few of the pieces before it was trashed. I don't know how to clean it. I don't know how to determine what the rhinestones are made from or what the setting is. How can I tell?
