This was so interesting. I have collected pins and brooches over the years, some fine jewelry, most costume jewelry. I always just bought what I liked, but now I will want to go through my collection and inspect more thoroughly. Maybe I’ll find a treasure. 😊 I enjoyed this video!
Thanks Cousin!
@@RustyTheReseller I have Many Pieces of Old Costume Jewelry. Where can I possibly sell some? Can you tell me? Thanks alot.😊
Can I have your email? Just thought I'd ask. 😮😊
Family lore has been passed down ... WW2 my aunt and husband walked into a junk store in Palm Beach and bought a "Rhinestone" pendant! It was not rhinestones at all but a piece made for the czar of Russia and stolen by the Bolchevicks when the family was murdered! Her husband opened the Lincoln and Cadillac dealership in Palm Beach from that "diamond" pendant!!!😊
Thank you so much!!. I have a few pieces that were given to me by 80 something year old friends, I am going to see what I actually have, other than very beautiful sentimental pieces. 🙏🏼
Love pins and brooches for jackets, sweaters necklines turbans. Just love them from my mom.
Thanks great video
Beautiful brooches!
Good helpful video. visual note. slow down the camera at the start, cause you miss the selection and focus not good. When showing the the individual broches, have a neutral background cause the pieces fight with the reflections from below, or use a white glove. Show how a loop helps. Thanks.
Excellent video!
I have a necklace similar to the first brooch you showed. I’ve had it since the 80’s and unfortunately had it displayed in a room that got a lot of sun and some of the blue stones turned purple😅.
Oh how dare you ! 🤦🏽♀️🤣😆
Sarah Coventry is good jewelry…
Really interesting thanks so much!!
Learned a lot from you.. thank you
😂 going to put the link right here. Looks in the wrong direction. Doesn't even point out in description
How hard is it to take out those bad glue jobs on stones and what type of glue do you use
Thanks for the info!!
Any time!
Thanks
What do you clean these vintage pieces with that won’t damage them? Thanks
Thank you for sharing your knowledge of these lovely pieces of jewelry. My husband says I am a Magpie because I enjoy pieces that sparkle. My unprofessional advice for anyone going through garage sales and thrift store pieces for themselves is to buy what appeals to you - I have several pieces, probably not worth much at all, but I adore them, so they bring joy to me which is priceless. If you are looking for pieces to resell, then quality is paramount. Thanks again! Pat from FL
Wonderful! Your are welcome. Glad to have you here Cousin!
My kind of person. Making memories too is more important than money.
My husband thinks I am part raccoon. I love shinny💖.
You're jewelry you bought from me is still in the brown cabinet on my front porch at 820 N 13th whenever you decide to come get it. Thank you again.

You made a great jewelry finds. Your riveted pin backs are generally late 1950s/early 1960s. The metallic backed stones are termed "foil backed" stones. The irridescent finish is known as "aurora borealis" and may sometimes be dated to the 1960s if the finish is blue tinged, later if rainbow tinged. The bright shiny white chrome finishes are often rhodium plate (Eisenberg pieces are known for rhodium plate). Austian crystals are the gold standard for faux gems, especially in vintage costume jewelry. Czechoslovakia is another important manufacturing center for rhinestones and beads.
Darkened or cloudy rhinestones are often signs of water that has gotten into the setting under the stone. Costume rhinestone jewelry should never be worn on rainy days.
Your Weiss broach is fabulous. If I was your mom, I would be first in line for that beauty. ❤️
So, I've been an antiquarian for 45 years. Also having the opening it helps the stones to breath. You are correct as well . Just because a piece isn't stamped doesn't mean it's not a great quality piece. My father and my uncle still are jewelers. Always check with a professional if you aren't sure your piece is high quality. My uncle buys a whole lot of estate jewlery. So do I.
Also, the glue back in the day they use a lot of glue. Doesn't mean it's not a good stone or piece epithet The yellowing is sometimes age from the stores or the piece. The glue back that wasn't clear as well so it yellowed.
Weiss ,Trifari just to say a few are amazing pieces. just giving my little input
Thnx for the tip regarding water and costume jewelry.
I LOVR Weiss anything just ,bout
@@barbaracronin4164 00
Very interesting but I’d like to know how much you would resell each piece by.
I happened to come across your video by chance.
I inherited a collection of my Grandmother's brooches in 1977. She passed away at age 94...she had them for many years. I always knew they were valuable but also knew I would never sell them because I love them all. I can still picture her wearing some of them when I was a little girl. I keep them all together in a lovely frame inside of a China cabinet. ❤
My sister in law was gifted with her grammas pins. She put them on a pillow to display them
I wish I could see your grandmothers collection. I happened to come across this video as well. My grandmother loved jewelry. Costume and fine jewelry too. She gave me a beautiful necklace with imitation pearls. It broke and what did I do? I threw it away. I wish I was smarter and had it fixed. The mistakes I somehow made when I was young.
I bought a junk jewelry bag of bangles for $5. Two of them were 22K Indian gold bracelets, full of real diamonds, sapphires, ruby's, & peridot. I saved the stones, & scraped the bracelets for $900 & $750. I plan on making a huge nice custom ring, from the stones.
Hello from Germany 🙂... I am new here ... at minute 13.40 you say it is "Made in Austria" ..... The stones can be Rock Crystals !! -- and they darken with the time 🙂 The back of the broach is closed because they don`t shine by themselves ( sorry for my german-english )
Maybe you have a gem-tester ... I`m watching here for the first time .
Your German-English is great!
You did very well.
Your English is better than my German.
Just found your channel today. Appreciate your attention to the details of a piece so that we can better understand what to look for and know what we are finding. Thank you.
I LOVE videos, books etc that I can learn from. I have never come across anything explaining costume jewellery before and was in awe of what you were telling us. I will definitely be viewing more of you videos. Thank you SO much for sharing your knowledge.
You are so welcome!

The rectangle shape stones are called baguettes. In real diamonds they tend to be more expensive because it is harder to hide the flaws when they are cut this way. Thanks for the video!
I know nothing about assessing jewelry but I have a fairly large bag to go through that belonged to my MIL who was well off and traveled a lot. This video was helpful. I’m sure I’ll need to watch many more too.
Great video. I love buying brooches, so this was very informative. Now subscribed to your channel from Australia.
Awesome! Thank you!
Mom always said I looked at the price to make sure something was expensive to decide if I liked it or not. I didn't! But for some reason, my eye always went to the most expensive item.
I sat and watched this whole video because my eye went directly to the Penning and I wanted to see what you said about it.
Surprise! It was the most expensive one you mentioned. I assure everyone, including Mom, I did not know the price AGAIN. LOL
Hah! I waited for the Penning too! I have seen that piece once or twice before, loved it, and wanted to know more. Good taste you have!
I love the Penning brooch.
I really appreciate you going through all the pieces. I love broaches, but I've never known what to look for as far as quality. I don't even want several, maybe 1 or 2. Now, if I come across one that I really like I will know just a bit more to consider if I want to spend my hard earned money. Thank you.
I love brooches. Buy what you like, and are willing to pay for, and wear it. 😉
I felt that I felt your video was really interesting and I also felt as the people that commented on it were very nice and very smart they actually intrigued me by their comments thank you everyone for everything have fun that always❤
I think it was the Swarovski company that first coated the backs of their crystal pendants and Cabochons with a reflective silver finish so their pieces would have extra shine. I know that they invented the AB finish, which stands for Aurora Borealis.
Thanks I never new what AN stood for.
I have a brooch with clip on earrings that my dad bought for my mom while he was in boot camp in Texas . WW2 era .
I realized when watching you video that the brooch you mentioned may be Pennino .. check closely
And the G may be an O. Just thought I would mention that🙏thanks for the tips on what to look for costume jewelry..have some cool vintage costume brooches and earrings that my mom gave me that I will look into.
When I lived in NYC in the 1980's I first ran across 'the costume jewelry ladies'. After a Park Ave. estate had been picked over by Sothebys or such they descended on the 'non-precious'. The one thing I learned is that the rich people had the really good name costume jewelry, designer pieces etc.
I love the videos.Thank you. It would be nice if you could give us an approximate value on the items that you evaluate in your videos.
We will start doing that more..
YES!!! PLEASE!!!
I am from a family of Antique dealers, Going to offer my feedback.
I have many Rhinestone pieces that are made of "glass" and is open on the back so not necessarily. Some of those are made in China they makes alot of very misleading pieces because many are made nice and beautiful "looking". They say crystal but are coated glass.
Those gold tone without makers mark are probably antique costume from the 50's, the metal will be softer and not so shiny, open backs with the rivets, the parts spin on the back, ya those are worth quite a bit more, alot of those have been used in crafts and not a great amount of them out there anymore in nice quality, those are the ones you want just short of not having a makers mark.
Sarah Cov. actually brings quite a bit now days.
Silver rose cluster is another China piece.
Black under stones is from water getting under the stones, also a sign of age. Usually If its from Austria, its very desirable and probably worth at least 45 with crystal stones. 65+ with nice clear ones or authentic Aurora colors, blue being most desirable in the Aurora Borealis, purple is rarest.
Also look at how the pin is attached, that globby soldering is low quality. You want the rivited spinning pins some with the "v" mount..
The blue daisy pin, the nice one, is one of your best pieces. The last gold filled is a nice piece
Most people will buy what appeals to them first then look at quality. :)
Excellent Info. Cousin! Keep it coming!!
@@RustyTheReseller I figure pass the correct info on, so many dont know this stuff, its a dying art, but you seem to have a fair grasp on it. But just like turquoise, 94% of what is saturated the market is not authentic, sometimes you can tell by the silverwork but a signature doesnt mean worth, you need to know your artists, the newer native american posts use turquoise from again, China and Burma. You really gotta know your stones
Thank you. I have costume jewelry which is gorgeous. Women were so beautiful and always dressed, especially when going out.
This video brought back great memories of my grandmother. She always wore her fancy brooches when going somewhere special. Thank you so much.
My great Aunt always had beautiful pieces of costume jewelry. When she passed, i was gifted most of it. A lot of it I continued to wear until i retired. I would like to sell a couple pieces. Your vid is really helpful. And I subscribed. TY
If moisture gets into the foil at the back of a rhinestone, it'll tarnish which, in turn, will make it black.
Can I do anything to fix this.
It’s called a dead stone. It would need to be replaced.
That means somebody went dancing and had a good time in what was inexpensive fun stuff. It wasn’t intended to last this long.
❤
Rusty, FYI: Sarah Coventry jewelry was sold at home parties like Tupperware. We were all proud of our reasonably priced, very nice, jewelry
I also attended 5th Avenue. Looked like high end jewelry and I loved it with my bright shoulder pad suits. The 80’s and I still have them
@@tamarabrown-beaulac1937 rr
Sarah Coventry sells for pretty good prices. Most of the pieces I've seen were beautifully modern. And they made really good use of stainless steel!
Sold many pieces back in the day ♥️
He’s being very disrespectful of the legacy of costume jewelry and its brands. Doesn’t seem to know a whole lot about it. He seems to be talking off the cuff. Really disrespectful comments about signed pieces and the people who collect them.
Your videos are so helpful and informative.
Another great way to date brooches is the part the end of the pin goes into.Newer pins have the safety enclosure and older pins are just a C
Sarah Coventry was sold by the Avon brand in the 1970's, we bought quite a few of the brooches for sale from Avon, there are collectors of SC in the UK.
I didn't know Avon sold Sara Coventry. Sara Coventry had their own company & Book parties!
Sarah oventry and Avon were both direct sellers (home parties) but not part of the same corporation.
My beloved mom, now deceased, loved vintage jewelry and I have a few of her pieces. I've always been curious about how this jewelry is valued. I found this quite interesting. Thanks.💖
So a makers mark supersedes the ones that have stones set in cut out backs ? , because a few looked better made with no makers mark .
Makers' marks add value, depending on the mark. Makers like Hattie Carnegie did not always mark their pieces, or the pieces were marked by a long lost hang tag. Those pieces marked "Austria" are valuable without a mark, and so are unmarked, yet dentifiable pieces.
NOT Penning - lol. PENNINO
Great info, beautiful pieces. I’ve been collecting rhinestone brooches for over 30 years…back when you could get them for $5-$10 each! The period/canary piece looks to be an unsigned Sherman from the 50’s-60’s. Sherman was a Canadian designer from Montreal whose pieces now command anywhere from $75 to $300 for a complete set.
Really interesting. Thanks for sharing your knowledge! The one brooch, near the end, leaf shaped. I believe it’s made by Pennino, not Penning. It is a gorgeous piece.
Rub the pearls on your teeth. If they feel gritty they are real… of some description…
Happy I stumbled across your channel. Alway wanted to sell jewelry but was intimidated by the variety and authenticity. This video helps with some solid base knowledge. Thank you
Agreed from Australia. I have learnt a lot. Thanks mate. Just discovered & joined. Cheers.
I am partial to enamel flower brooches, but now I better understand about the others. Thanks!
Those sound great
I never see gorgeous pins like these! They are just gorgeous , costume or not! I’m going to wear pins again!
I do wear my grandmother's. Brighten ups the out fit
Check the butterfly pendant again, did I see markings on the actual part for the chain?
I have some fake but most of mine are real. Great video
Rusty, the link to the fine Jewelry video did not appear for me. I restarted thinking perhaps it was my end, but still no link. You might need to correct that in the beginning? Thank you for all you do!
Thank you for the info.. I've collected jewelry for about 40 years.. I don't usually spend a lot, but I know what I like... I have a couple of 1950s jewelry boxes that I keep them in.. again, thank you..
Age can discolor stones and make them darker. Very common in older pieces.
Moisure is the enemy of costume pieces, the settings get moist under the stones and darken or make the stones look milky.
Yes, it's 'WEISS'. U pronounced it perfectly 😉
Wow, At First I did not know what to expect, but you truly know your stuff!! You are also very articulate and well-spoken.. Thanks- I definitely subscribed. 👍😉🇨🇦
This guy is definitely from the south with that strong southern accent.
Thank you, I've learned a lot. Someone said that if the pin goes beyond the clasp it's older, do you know if that's true?
Interesting
Yes. The closure can help determine approx. age
I actually have a 925 silver with turquoise stones shaped exactly like your leaf pin.. mine is from my mother (I'm 75 ) . I'm curious if it's worth anything. To me , though, it's priceless. It's going to my granddaughter
But aren't thrift store owners knowledgeable enough to not allow for any real bargains? Personally, when I thrift store shop I am looking for "deals". My income limits what I can spend.
Many are. Unsigned brooches in good/very good condition start at $25.00 to $35.00. Marked pieces start around $45.00. I have enough brooches to wear so no longer buy; it costs nothing but time to look, though. 😁
Thank You! Been thinking about adding costume jewelry to my vintage sales! Great starter video as I know nothing besides I like it! Lol!
Some costume jewelry is just beautiful! I really liked the red and pink butterfly pendant. So glad that this video was constantly in focus!! Never a blurry moment - awesome. Interesting and informative video. Thanks for your time!
Wonderful, thank you. The brooches look so pretty together on that platter. Can you advise me how to restore some brass necklaces that I love? They turned almost black when we had that wildfire storm (Northern California) about 5 years ago. Next, I’m watching your fine jewelry video. 🙂
Use Maas or simichrome polish with soft cloth
Top notch informative video! I just subscribed, and I can't wait to see more of your videos. Sometimes RUclips's algorithm hits the nail on the head.
Bing watching your content. Thank you for taking the time to explain so much. I have learned a lot.
You are so welcome!
Austrian pieces sell as high as wiess and coro.
Very Nice!!! I know that a Marking is usually a good indication of "BETTER QUALITY," but had forgotten about the "OPEN BACK". Thank-You for helping us to further our education on what makes a "QUALITY PIECE!"
Rusty! Do your research on Sarah Coventry jewelery company . Very big company in the 50s and 60s.
They are little pieces of art work. I love them all.
I highly doubt that your Austria piece is resin
Not sure if it's the same company, but Weiss is also maker of exceptional scissors aimed at the tailoring and hair cutter markets, plus used to make high quality kitchen knives. My Weiss pinking shears were inherited from my great grandmother and are still excellent!
I also have a couple of Weiss scissors.
Very informative, lovely pieces. Thank you!
I enjoyed your video it was very helpful and I will watch again, thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for this helpful info. As a reseller of various vintage & "near vintage" decorative hard goods, I also sell costume/fashion jewelry pieces. I do my research and pick up a lot from other resellers' videos. But it's great to hear someone with expertise explain some key facts and likely facts about costume pins and brooches. It's most frustrating to me when I have a piece of costume jewelry that is so well made, with all the "good stuff" and yet the maker put no mark on it anywhere. I understand that sometimes a quality brand maker would produce pieces for another brand, perhaps at a lower cost, and maybe with less expensive elements, but those pieces would not have any marks to identify the maker. Is this something you (or anyone reading this) know to be correct? Thanks again.
There are a few higher end costume brands that did not or at one time did not mark their pieces. Identifying them, however, is quite difficult if you do not have expensive knowledge and experience AND price guides or book references at your disposal. Sadly, there is no quick or easy way to "know" if a piece is or is not made by a nice brand...
That is so true. There were so many vintage makers who made pieces with no marks. I have a brushed goldtone leaf with faux pearls that says it is 1960s Trifari but has no mark.
Correct 💯
Sarah Coventry pieces were all, as I understand it, contracted out to makers and often name designers. For example. And very early pieces were unmarked.
@@RustyTheResellerDoing a “visual search” with a picture of a piece is often very helpful and VERY good to save time with researching, esp. an unknown brand.
What happened to the aqua piece at 10 o’clock on tray??
Hey eagle eye.good observation
Still waiting... LOL
I am glad I found your channel. I have a focusing disability and jobs are hard to keep. I am thinking about opening a resale shop or do what you do. I find it so interesting. Thank you!
Very nice and informative. I acquired several sets of costume jewelry from my grandmother and wondered if there was any value. This might help me!
Sets ("parures," "demi-parures") are a very good thing!
The only value you should care about is sentimental value.
Thanks; Like this video!
One of the hands down nicest pins was the Austrian Crystal Scarf pn-which you didn't like much. If you view the pece as designed, with the pin behind level & toward the top of the circle, youmay notice the 3 smoe crystal stones were deliberate-& part of the design.
Love that crystal scarf pin. It requires attention to designed orientation.
If stone is replayed. What kind of glue can we use. To keep it from turning yellow
Which one was that?
Should pin usually be across fabric? Some horizontal?
Keep scarf in place
@@faymarrufo7092 E6000
Yes, if puzzled by a design I look to the orientation of the clasp, horizontal with the c clasp or safety opening facing down.
Thank you for this helpful and interesting information. First time here, but I will be checking out your other video!
Me to. Fun
I learned so much from this video, and all the comments--Thank you!
I have all of my mother and most of my grandmother's jewelry. (I was the only girl! Tho my cousin got her ring! 😔)
I love having them and would never sell them. Their value doesn't matter much either, just what I like and enjoy wearing! I have always especially enjoyed the deco pieces and the 1950's and 60's pieces--they look great! Vintage is always in fashion, but we tend to bring back certain time periods in fashion and costume jewelry always helps bring the outfit together.
And one day, I hope MY 3 girls will enjoy them!
Thanks again to all!
I have about 50 brooches from my mom, and grandmothers estate. Thanks for the tips. I'm sure most of them, or all are just costume. Most have no makers mark. A few look extremely old, but the clasp is a bit of a giveaway.
Thank you for the information sharing I learned a few new things thank you
Fantastic video, love the fact that the pieces are held up close and you’re explanation on details.Thank-you!!
Glad it was helpful!
You’re so kind sharing your learning so others of us can try to live better lives. Thank you so much. From a wee mum in Scotland, bless you for your kindness!
You forgot to state that Sarah Coventry jewelry has a life time warranty
All this 1940-50's costume jewelry from my mom...hmmmm I might have a few pieces to investigate 😊
There are two or three really good Internet sites out there. Look for jewelry marks and styles. I have several brooches from my grandmother, it was fun to research them.
Thank you! I have a collection of brooches and clip on as well as screw earrings. The crystals are absolutely sparklers. Back in the days women dressed up all the time. I wore them when I worked but niw it’s jeans and blouse. Sad…. I used to pretend they were diamonds. Some of the crystal sparkles more than my real diamonds.
I need to sell so someone can enjoy, my children don’t want any of it.
Oh my goodness! My great grandmother had a brooch like #2, except in pink stones! I have it tucked away 💗
My grandmother had beautiful costume jewelry
That signature is Pennino, not Penning. Sorry but your knowledge of vintage costume jewelry is sad. I highly recommend viewers ignore what you see on this video. I stopped counting at 30 pieces of wrong information.
I appreciate your education- from Ky
Thank you Cuz for sharing the finer points in custome jewelry! I’ll have to start looking on the backs for details 🤩
Real peridot does not look like those at all.
Sounded to me like he meant (colour of) peridot... or a light clear green.
Gosh...could I have used your help 10 years ago when I came into a large quantity of antique and vintage jewelry of all kinds. I had a small antique booth at a shop. When visiting an estate sale on the last day, the owner had a large collection of costume jewelry. He just wanted to be rid of. I did pay a good price, but even with my limited knowledge of jewelry, I could see pieces that had maker's marks that were very sought after. Shortly after I had to move and most of the jewelry had to be boxed up and is still in storage for me to sell. I do have an eye for nice pieces as my mother was quite the jewelry diva in her day. Some pieces are so beautiful I don't know if I could sell them, but in the end, what good are they in a dark box. I recognized many points you made that indicated lower quality, but I learned a lot about better-quality costume jewelry. My biggest challenge was pricing and where to sell. I was almost tempted to put the entire lot on eBay, or split it into several lots. I've definitely subscribed and will watch your other videos. Thank you so much Rusty!
Would love to see them! LOL
I've j7st subscribed. I find your voice soothing and your lessons very easy to follow. So far you are the best I've heard.
Great video! I have so much of this type of jewelry. Inherited from mom and grandma and more… Thank you so much! I learned a lot. ❤😊
I don't know if anyone said this; (I'm not going to read all the comments.) but I think that unusual shaped one is a scorpion.
There was another broach that you had that was a green those stones on the outer ring look a little like jade and sometime there is jewerly that was made in other countries that they get those good stone cheap so they use them on jewerly that we call junk jewerly but hey....a lot of the time jewerly falls into a class of junk jewerly just because it's not real gold or diamonds but seriously there are cheap stones that I like much better than diamonds and gold. Austria is where I have seen some of what they considered cheap but it's real jade and some of the other stones. ....definitely check out the smoke colored stuff.
Brenda! It’s jewelry in USA or jewellery in England!
There is no such thing as jewerly.
And don’t tell me you have dyslexia…your other spellings are fine.
The manufacturer isn’t “painting” the backs. Those are foiled rhinestones; they come that way.
I love wearing Vintage brooches. Eisenberg, my fave, is getting too pricey for me. I like Sarah Coventry affordability and it was a way for women to make money back in the day selling to other women, like Avon.
That’s how I remember the brand! Sarah Coventry and Coro are the brands I remember ads for. My Granny had some beautiful brooches.
Thank you for this valuable info! Would you be able to put an estimate on what you would sell each piece individually for in the next video? Just learning and that would help us newbies out a bunch! 😉
Yes. Please add an estimated value. I didn't realize old brooches could command such a value. Thanks.
Besides the estimated price samples, could you please give recommendations on selling venues for selling my pieces besides EBay. E.njoying your video and thank you for such good info.
