My brain heard both “Lando Calrission” and “la mode Parisienne” and decided that you said “Lando Parisienne” and quite frankly I will now aspire to that in all areas of fashion
Huge cloak fan. Cloaks, ponchos, shawls... anything without tight, restricting arms. They're much more size and temperature adjustable and a great way, to display beautiful fabrics, trim, embroidery... wouldn't mind them making more of a comback in fashion!
@@SallyJennings-xi3sq You can use buttons and buttonholes or large, reinforced snaps, just like with a coat. For a temporary solution, I'd recommend getting some of these extra large, heavy duty safety pins. They come in decorative options, too. Although regular brooches are an option, too, of course.
A very elegant look. The beetle brooches with the chains would look great as a faux fastening on the wool cloak. Also, thanks for reminding me that somewhere, I have a green wool cape with a super snuggly faux fur lining. I think I've had it since the 80's.
I love that the blue lining made the blue of the lurex cape POP!! I had a hard time seeing blue in the weave before, but once the blue was underneath, it became so obvious! Gorgeous!
That Singer sewing machine was built in Clydebank, to the west of Glasgow, in what was the largest factory in Europe in the first half of the 20th C. Of course its all gone now, although at the time it was in effect a self-contained village, separate from the heavier industry of shipbuilding. Pushing even further back in time Britain was exporting woollen cloaks, as luxury items, to the Roman Empire.
I will never understand why capes went out of style. I absolutely love me a good cloak or cape … heck, even ponchos are pretty cool. Please consider combining the clips of drafting the various hood styles into a single “how to” video. I think that would be a great reference to refer back to and I am probably not alone in that.
I'm glad to see you delving into the realm of feminine capes; they'll also go with Victorian outfits! As one who was a child in the actual 80s, I especially appreciate your taste, as I do the *"Snow White"* bodice and skirt combo you wore with them!
'This is not sponsored' but girl, it should be! You're always showing their delicious silks and if I would live in US I would definitely buy them. But regarding the first cape, it's insane. Very space chic, this brocade was unreal. I liked that big hood in the second one, both are beautiful. And what is more luxurious than wool cape with silk lining. And it seems really easy to make, maybe one day my favourite fabric store will have enough of nice coating wool (they have deadstock, and I'm never quick enough) and I will finally make myself one. Seems very useful for autumn. Especially with big hood.
Hey Bianca. I want to thank you for all of your content. I learned so much from you and often review your videos, especially the patterning parts. You explain so well, at least my brain seems to work similar to yours,so please no more concerns about your way. It is great!
Wait a minute. Waaaait a minute! I can't make a cape by taking a flat sheet, tying it around my neck and telling people I'm BatMan? No wonder folks were staring at me at the grocery.
Brilliant! Thank you. I so appreciate that you pattern draft everything you make, and that you show it to us! I learn so much from you. Thank you again.😃
I have done that! One side is a blue/black woven wool. The other side is a black jersey. This side has black frogs for closure for inclement weather. The blue/black has silver leaves clasp. I need to re-do the hems with bias tape as the cloak is now about twenty years old!
I love a cape. I've got a 1960's nurse's cape that I wear a lot in winter. Watching this I'm crocheting a black roll neck cape. All so you wear long gloves more with a cape. x
Living in the Highlands of Scotland I have many wool cloaks in a variety of colours, and all are fully lined with hoods. The weather has just turmed Autumny so I wore one of my favorites for the first time since last winter. I love them so much. When you were making the wool cloak I was telling the screen that you should make the arm holes further in towards the centre front otherwise it will be difficult to use your arms with arm slits at the side seam due to limited fabric at the back.. You can usually only have side seam arm slits with a full circle cloak as the additional fullness at the back doesn't restrict the arm movements. If using less fabric like in this video, it can be useful to cut the two front pieces into half again and then use that seam for your arm slits.
Your outfit under the cloaks was giving supreme Snow White vibes and it was Good. I do love a good cloak, you did an excellent job. If anyone can pull off a Lando/80s/40s/Bladerunner look, it's you.
I'm always in awe of you imagination! Sadly I just follow pattern instructions, however, I have made a block for my trousers and made 4 variations from that block. I have just finished a mock-up for a 1820 gown (for my wife), using draping technique and drafted the sleeves. Clearly you have convinced me to try these things😂. PS I love the capes.
When you were modeling that lovely green cape you made me think "So that is how snow white looks evil", a very funny thought. They turned out looking amazing. :}
Mmmmmm that green wool with the shot silk lining is just delicious. I’ve never been able to work out why capes and cloaks fell out of general wear, but both of your pieces look great on you.
Love them! Who can whip up a couple of capes in a day...Bianca, that's who! The wool & silk one is my favorite. I can see myself wearing it with some gorgeous 1940s wool pants. Have a great weekend, xoxo's Sandie🍁🍂
i LOVE the cloak. it begs for a 1940s lotr episode! i swear my great-grandmother had a midi so similar to yours. she made all her own clothing & kept every piece. i think she made hers in the 60s, & the outer fabric was cream with gold threading.
Some years ago I bought some black wool blend intending to make a fur lined hooded cape as worn in the first Wonder Woman movie. As a toile I used cheap purple velvet from Spotlight, which later became the base for a Raven cosplay ("we're not the Teen Titans, we're the Senior Titans") and I still wear the purple cape on a regular basis and still get appreciation and compliments from total strangers! The pattern I used has princess seams so I was able to have hand slits in the side seams AND pockets in the princess seams! I know I want to make the hood big enough to act as a capelet covering the shoulders when not on my head but haven't even started the black cape many years later! Maybe for next winter...
Amazing and Lovely! I have to wonder how many of us have a cape that our mothers made us when we were kids? 🤔My mother made mine when I was in junior high, I still have it, and on occasion, wear it. Though I do have to say, I get as much crap for wearing my cape as I do for wearing a hat. 🤭 Speaking of mothers making capes, I made my oldest daughter a cape when she was a kid, too. I need to decorate it with fabric fall leaves, because one day her cat took a severe liking to it and snagged all around the hem. I repaired all the pulls he made, but the traces can still be seen, so I'm going to camouflage them with leaves. Beautiful work, hope they serve you well. P.S. this is the most perfect project for that green wool! Bravo!
I think the leaves would be a lovely touch to a cloak or cape. As for people dissing you for wearing a cape or hat, well, they don't have the gutts to wear them!
Love the facrics you used for the green cloak! I used to go to medieval fairs in university and we made our own garments as well, so we all had a cloak like this and mine was drak green
Love how these both turned out! It's funny that you mentioned Jedi robes, as I'm working on one for my 9 year old son for Halloween and his hood is about a fat quarter in size that I'm gathering to fit after putting a nice deep hem on the front. He thinks it's very funny how big it is.
I made a knee length cape recently from Vogue V1838 vintage pattern and love it. Requires different skills to use your hands while wearing it and I had to use a cross body bag underneath. Mine is not really practical for that reason :) Just saw your design and noted the gaps in the side seam for the hands to go through. Mine has the gaps in the front, which is not as practical. Love yours!
I have been sewing most of my life, self taught mostly. I really appreciate the many tips you have given me, not least, walking pattern pieces to make sure they still match!
My very first sewing project as an adult was creating a cape for my daughter out of fleece and satin blanket lining. ❤ It turned out great, but nowhere near as classy as these two! You're making me itch to find a great purple wool blend or tweed to make my own. 😊
Bianca you just look prettier all the time and I thank you sooo much for teaching me about slopers and adapting pattern ideas. I thought for years I've got to learn the Chinese or Central American way of measuring but never had time bec of raising family. Now that I'm ancient (but gorgeous) it turns out I didn't need to learn it anyway. Sewing is so much more fun and interesting now. Now I have an amazing wardrobe that is way too dressy for church or grandkid's soccer games. Oh well. It's the challenge that I like and the dream come true. And against all odds my husband has become my fashion advisor and resident photographer. And I have lots of retro fabric to admire and imagine into amazing fashion statements.
Hemming the two layers separately on the green cloak was a wonderful idea. Invariably, the lining gets saggy, and your solution is fantastic! Both pieces are lovely-- I am a sucker for a good cloak.
I love how the wool cape turned out. It looks really nice on you. I been planning on making a cloak and am saving up for the fabrics. My sons pinned up something from Middle Earth the other day and I showed them what I had in mind from Vogue. 😊
With an impressive collection of giant brooches, a decorative clasp is as necessary, as pockets are with your handbag and clutch collection. And what an excellent opportunity to pair brooches that have mates, or ones that look interesting together.
I love so many things. First, I love seeing other people sew on vintage machines. Lovely Singer Spartan you have there. Second, I got this fabric when I went to the fabric store to buy something else is where about half my fabric cones from! Third, your sparkle cape is so Halston looking! Having lived through the 80s, you nailed it, and since the 80s loved the 40s, yup, rock on! Forth, as always, your videos are like going to a very fun class. I've been sewing 45 years, and learn something every time I watch, or rewatch, one of your videos!
Love! Love! Love! When I was a kid I daydreamed about gadding about in a black velvet cloak lined in red satin. It might be time to honour my inner child 😄. Thanks for the inspiration.
Ooh, the green wool one is gorgeous, especially with that decadent lining! I have a massive, heavy old-gold velvet cloak I made, somewhat amateurishly, many years ago (yes, it was made from curtains, shhhh). It comes out and gets worn a couple of times a year, and I adore it. Cloaks are great!
When I line or underline anything, I trim a scant 1/8" all around the lining piece(s). This helps to keep it behaving well, not peeking out. In addition to understitching. Great video!
Such a pleasure watching these capes hatch from your mind and sturdy Singer machine. I like the brocade with the larger shoulder. I think in would be comfy to add a pocket inside as a place to keep your hands. Just thinking. I imagine the wool cape over a long wool skirt and a Victorian cameo at the neck. Again, just thinking. Windswept moors and heather… “Heathcliff”, “ oh Kathy”.
This is perfect for the season! It's also on my list of things to make! Has been for awhile. I really need to just go for it! Buy the nice wool and do it! And the hardest part make stuff for myself!
One of my absolute favorite things my mother ever made me is a black wool cloak. I still have it mumblety-mumblety years later. It's definitely worn in the shoulders, but I still love it and will drag it out whenever possible.
Yummy fabric choices! I love black, but olive is my favorite neutral. I've had several vintage capes over the years, but I find them annoying to wear (especially driving - not very ladylike lol). Lately with puff sleeves back in style, it's occurred to me that a cape would be the right outer garment for some of them since the sleeves would get crushed or mashed up trying to go into a conventional coat sleeve. I think that is the point of the extra part jutting out. I have narrow shoulders, so that looks insanely weird to me on myself, despite having come of age in the 80s when shoulders could barely make it through a doorway. Inside secret: in high school, we all rook our shoulder pads out, and at least accused each other of stuffing bras with them ;)
Cloaks both look awesome!! They just add a certain flair to whatever is worn. I had made one for myself and for my daughter when she was little ( just a few years ago lol) and it just had its own mystique. Anyway beautiful work as always. Take care and Stay safe 😊
Ah, who DOESN'T love a good cloak? The 'mockup' gives me more Director Krennik from Rogue One vibes. A bit more militaristic control rather than Lando's swashbuckling flair! GORGEOUS fabric, though! Do we all go through a forest green cloak phase? I made one, myself, when I was in college! Wore it for several years, loaned it out to winter brides, and it now resides in my adult daughter's costume collection.
My brain heard both “Lando Calrission” and “la mode Parisienne” and decided that you said “Lando Parisienne” and quite frankly I will now aspire to that in all areas of fashion
Oh I see that modern Show White look you're rocking there.......I am here for it. More modern faerietale looks please
I also thought Snow White when I saw the thumbnail 😂
Exactly my thought 🙂 Lovely!
You just wait with the fairy tale, I've got a few ideas coming up shortly ✨😂⚔
Huge cloak fan. Cloaks, ponchos, shawls... anything without tight, restricting arms. They're much more size and temperature adjustable and a great way, to display beautiful fabrics, trim, embroidery... wouldn't mind them making more of a comback in fashion!
Cloak, poncho, ruana, shawl... love them all! I hate wearing more than one layer of sleeves, so a loose, enveloping outer layer is heaven.

For a temporary solution, I'd recommend getting some of these extra large, heavy duty safety pins. They come in decorative options, too. Although regular brooches are an option, too, of course.
The outfit that you wore to model your capes gave me a "Disney's Snow White in 1940's dress" vibe.
I was thinking 'Snow White from outer Space '
The must-wear accessory for fall spooky season!
I must admit that I love capes and cloaks!
Gorgeous!
The blue blouse and yellow skirt are giving me Snow White vibes, especially with your skin and hair. :)
Now I need a cape... but with an awesome evil villain collar.
And omg, you're taking your pins out! Who are you?
And what has she done with Bianca?
19:11 the broach on the cloak is delightful the cape is just delicious
So true!

Those are gorgeous. It was an excellent choice to reduce the shoulder on the wool one. That second one will probably turn out to be a wardrobe staple.
I will never understand why capes went out of style. I absolutely love me a good cloak or cape … heck, even ponchos are pretty cool.

This seems like a perfect thing to make reversible, which is nice for something that takes so much fabric.

@samh.3421 Yep. Was thinkin' the same.....
Beautiful eyeshadow look today! I love the fabrics you used in the two cloaks. That deep green wool cloak is especially fabulous.
Lovely. Which seems to be the word I choose for your work.
The blue and yellow also made me think Snow White.

Oooo the green wool with the oxidized copper kind of look of that silk is *stunning*.
Midi = best lenght 98% of the time
Cape = yes
Cloak = again yes.
All the « yes-ses » thank you!
The wool and silk cloak with the blue and yellow blouse and skirt gives off a Snow White/the hunter vibe. 😊
I have a black wool cape from the 1960's I love it and always feel fabulous in it.
Love these! And you used your clapper! I'm so proud.😂
That wool though! Omg in love!!!!

The wool cloak makes me think af the German 'wetterfleck'. I was lucky enough to find a secondhand Hubertus wetterfleck. I love it so much...
Hi Bianca. You are such a clever girl. The capes are beautiful and you look very elegant in them.
OBSESSED. That brocadeeeeeee.

I loved the green cloak. Totally going to make my own. ❤
Love the facrics you used for the green cloak! I used to go to medieval fairs in university and we made our own garments as well, so we all had a cloak like this and mine was drak green
I saw an eyeliner i thought you'd love that was a duochrome copper to green. Chroma flik from glisten cosmetics in oil spill. Looks awesome on.
Love how these both turned out!

Fantastic capes! And you know I really like your intro & outro!! Thank you Bianca!
I was thinking too structured vibe but of course you knew exactly how to fix the look and make it gorgeous! 💙

Yes! A friend and I were just plotting how to bring more capes into the world because they are just so dang fabulous!
the look for first cape is a blend of Disney's snow white and the evil queen. it was such a surprise association. and it looks absolutely amazing. ♥
❤ I love both versions! But the peony silk OMG gorgeous!
I've been brainstorming the drafting of a mantle recently, this is excellent motivation!
With an impressive collection of giant brooches, a decorative clasp is as necessary, as pockets are with your handbag and clutch collection.
And what an excellent opportunity to pair brooches that have mates, or ones that look interesting together.
The green wool is *gorgeous* and the gold is a perfect complement to it!

Love the green cloak! So beautiful! 💚💚💚
The material is sitting on the table for me to make one for my (adult) child. You must have sensed it was there!
I just need a cloak, wanted one for years. The green one is stunning.
By all means, go for it!!🫖📚🎃🐈⬛

I love the finishing of the hem on the wool cloak. It’s so pretty I just love the whole thing.
Thank you!
The green cloak, is absolutely gorgeous, love the hood ❤

beautiful capes - you have such incredible linings I would love to see some reversible clothing.

Cloaks both look awesome!! They just add a certain flair to whatever is worn. I had made one for myself and for my daughter when she was little ( just a few years ago lol) and it just had its own mystique. Anyway beautiful work as always. Take care and Stay safe 😊
On my list for ages. Thanks, Bianca, for the inspiration!
Glam Calrissian I'm here for it. Gorgeous as always.
Both capes are lovely, but I'm partial to the green. I hope you enjoy wearing both.
