Just love the frequent use of that highly technical term floppy! You can always be as long winded -in the best possible sense - as you like, Bianca….. we love you for this!
I love that this video is basically "I bought fast fashion so you don't have to!" Taking down late-stage capitalism one self-drafted pattern at a time. (Side note: I may have to quote you that I'm a millennial that feels like an elder :D )
Ahh yes, the Elders are pleased with you. haha, I love referring to myself as an "Elder Millennial". I have one foot in Gen X and the other in Millennial. It's an interesting perspective.
Fantastic pattern! A great 1940's look with modern fabrics and modern techniques. Re: attaching sleeves "on the flat" - I've been doing that for more than 50 years, ever since I noticed that clothing manufacturers used that method for attaching sleeves. I find it much easier - especially for inexperienced sewers who can be intimidated by inset sleeves - and I have never noticed any difference in the finished product. So thanks for highlighting that technique. 😊
That was the weirdest-looking pattern, but I'm here for it, lol! Nice top, and I love that color. If you do a video for pins, can you include hand-sewing needles as well? I'm not quite ready to sew knits yet, but this video will go on my list of saved videos. Thanks for your work; I always look forward to your videos 😊
Bianca I purchased a supposedly forest green coating wool from either Fashion Fabrics or Mood, mostly because it looked more like teal than forest...and it WAS teal! I'm RV camping right now (still have my sewing machine with me!) but when we get home next week I'll comment again to tell you which company I got it from. Even though it's meant to be coating it's not super thick. It's going to be a cape!
Fun video, i think raising the underarm will help the fit. Its already snug across the bust, a smaller armhole is normally the way to go with stretch garments. Love the colour.
I greatly appreciate ht voiceover saying that you're "sticking with [your] scissors" over a shot where you're using them both as pattern weights and as a cutting implement
I'm so with you on the colours of fabric available. Back when I was in high school, I tried on a berry-coloured home-sewn 1950s suit. Alas, it was s size too small for me. I was recently told that some colours' availability is affected by the auto industry, because the colorants for autos wind up being used for markers, fabric dye, and all sorts of other things.
Lovely. Love the purple as well. My Mom had a skirt suit that color, sadly it wasn't there when we went through her things when she passed away. I think it was pleated though. If it was still there, and I had it I would have to send it to you. I'll keep my eyes open for a forest green pencil skirt. If you show what kind of forest green you wanted that would be great.
I would love to see you upload the first minute of your last lookbook as a short. It wouldn't matter if it stops at a weird spot. In fact, every minute of that would make a good short.
Your shirt is LOVELY! Teal and dark berry or burgundy were THE colors for weddings in 1989-1993. I made so many bows for so many weddings. Ahhh early jobs……
I am also on the hunt for new decent pins. It doesn't seem like such a hard ask honestly. Please keep us updated on what you find please. THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS TOP! I LOVE IT ❣️ 🤗 💙
I loooove the “floopiness” in the sides at the end!!! Your videos are all so well produced and fun to watch! Thank you for showing us how you made this!
I couldn’t believe it when I saw this video on my feed, because last night I dreamt of inserting an angled piece into a plain symmetrical bodice. I couldn’t figure out how…but voila, you showed me that and more! I love the ruching look. Thanks for all your wonderful videos. -Addie
It looks fabulous, Bianca! 🤩 That rich claret colour really sings on you too. I always enjoy your content, so thanks for sharing it. Have a beautiful weekend x
Lovely top in a great color. Also the neck finishing is a neat idea to use. Would work for a skirt waistband? Will have to try it on my only knit skirt re-sizing (a second hand purchase) project. Here’s a vote for a pin review vid. I too am trying to find good fine pins.
Thank you! I haven't tried it for a waistband but I imagine it would be very comfortable! Though it may not stay in place as much as I'd personally prefer, but I don't mind uncomfortable things so I'm a bad use case 😂
I've had the opposite happen from you. Ordered a navy blue shirt and ended up getting a green one, gave it to my mom. Loved how rich that color is. So good. :}
Omg your reference to a non-Newtonian fluid made my STEM self so happy. Your dress from the last video also has that va-va-voom on you that Is just 👩🍳 💋. All your projects are amazing.
Hello 😺 I Love the style, colors, and simplicity of that top. 💖 Awesome Job !!! 💖 I made an oblong Pin Cushion that is filled with Sand, to sharpen the Pins as I pull them out or insert into the pin cushion. Especially since I know what you are talking about concerning brand new pins that are dull.😺 You were speaking of taking in the side seams for a snugger fit, I noticed that top and/or dress would be adorable with a full bat wing sleeve. 💖 Keep Up the Good Work Bianca !! 💖

Dorr Mill in New Hampshire has many solid color woolens including a dark green almost black color. Dorr Mill features their fabrics mainly for crafts and rug making, however the signature collection is perfect for making clothing, such as suiting. Check them out. By the way, I made a medieval coat out of the dark green almost black wool. I love it.

Wool suiting in that berry or a dark teal 😍😍 it's what dreams are made of! Thank god I live in Ireland, where we've access to some amazing wools. I'd recommend looking up Donegal tweed, it comes in the most gorgeous colours!!
I remember I was in a giant souvenirs shop near-ish Blarney castle and they had tons of wool stuff and my little teen heart was sad I had no money 😂 I visited Ireland when I was 17 and loved it, would go back for wool and history anytime 💚
@@TheClosetHistorian That just means that you've reason to come visit us again! If you're ever in Europe again, Ryanair is an Irish company so there's always cheap flights here to go on fabric buying expeditions, or just to come for a little break in a rural cottage to relax in nature in amidst the busyness of trying to see everything there is to see in this neck of the woods! If you want to go green with envy, look up Magee 1866 and check out their fabric section. It's generally €65 a metre as it's a fancy company, but it's glorious for window shopping
Bianca, you should try Vogue Fabrics in Evanston , Illinois. They have a lot of suitings at great prices. The store is wonderful and a great place to shop.
I love the progression of this little series of videos, watching you work your way from a woven block to the knit top you wanted to copy 👍 The top is gorgeous, it looks like it could be quite flattering for those of us with lumps and bumps we're not thrilled about! Btw, have you encountered Gütermann's Maraflex thread? It's a stretchy thread - not like shirring elastic, like regular sewing thread that's elastic. It works exactly like regular sewing thread in the machine, you can put it in both the bobbin and top thread and off you go, not like shirring elastic that can only go in the bobbin. You can sew a regular straight stitch with it and it'll stretch with the fabric, which means you could probably sew knits on your beloved 99K. I know other big thread brands have their own versions, there's one called either Setaflex or Seraflex, I forget which.
Thank you! I would be quite suspicious of elastic threads, because in old garments usually the first thing to degrade is elastics and stretchy plastics, so I wouldn't believe in the lasting power I'm afraid!
@@TheClosetHistorian hmmm, good point, I've retired my fair share of undies with dead elastic. Would the same apply to the elastane content in the fabric?
Bianca, LOVE THIS PROJECT. When you started the gathering I remembered Vogue 1020, a top with a gathered side. I have made it several times. Tops/dresses. Its supposed to have sleeves but I've made it sleeveless. The pattern is out of print but if for those that want a pattern to start with its worth trying to seek out.
There is a vintage dress pattern that I found that I think you would like.... it's Vogue 6041.... it has an all in one queen Anne neckline and an interesting scallops around the waistline with gathering in the scallops
I'd love to see your take on pins and needles. They are really not as good as they used to be. Maybe a discussion of pin coushions. I think there is more to a pin coushion than simply a place to store your pins.
I just found your channel and I love this video! Your commentary about the green skirt sold me to sub. Thank you for doing this!! So easy to follow and understand.
Hi. I also love green and have trouble finding anything green , so I use *Dylon * they have a lovely green and you just put the dye in the washing machine with the fabric , I've used it on white jumpers I got cheap , as well as fabrics.
I watched this earlier ad forgot to comment but I was looking at renaissance fabrics and I remembered you mentioned wanting a red wool! They have a broadcloth that's a bit cooler toned than I think you wanted but it's pretty close to the right color. It's 85% wool and 25% nylon for $25/yd. I have some of their rose colored wool broadcloth (which I'm debating about buying more of lol) and I really love it! Idk if it's quite what you were looking for but I figured I'd mention it if you wanted to go take a look. Knits scare me but watching you play around with them is helping! I've only ever worked with wovens but now I'm thinking I may need to get a machine that can handle them (my 1892 singer treadle is lovely but she would HATE knits) and try them out sometime. Can't wait to see what you're working on next! 😄
This is so pretty! And that color is GORGEOUS! I'd love to see if there's a version of this you could do with a v-neck instead... I'm not sure how well it would work due to the way it gathers, but maybe you could figure something out?
Thank you! You could definitely do it as a faux wrap with a v-neck, or a similar style in a woven with a v-neck (and zipper of course), but I'm not experienced enough with knits to know how to finish a v-neck in knit fabrics!
The colour I'm having a hard time finding lately is periwinkle. Someone recently asked me to alter a periwinkle top and I just COULD NOT find matching thread, and then I realized that I haven't seen that colour in fabrics in a very long time (I went with the bluest lavender thread available.) Berry isn't usually my jam (but is delicious as jam,) but I love teal. I don't usually have an issue finding it - are you looking exclusively for wool? - because I've seen plenty in other fibers. This looks amazing - and I wonder what you could do with some stripe manipulation?
As a fellow lover of teal, I feel your pain. You could always tub dye some white fabric! I’m about to begin recreating a gown that is an impossible-to-find lilac-gray-puce-beige color, so I’ll be dyeing the fabric with Dharma Dyes!!
Wool takes dye very well, just saying 🌻. Dying over a dark blue wool with a neon green or yellow should result in something nicely green for a pencil skirt.
I would love a review on pins… I also hate pins that are not sharp. Also, is there a way to sharpen pins? I thought at one point I saw a pincushion for sale with walnut shell pieces in it to sharpen your pins as you go. Mad at myself for not buying it when I saw it!
You can get ground walnut shells and emery powder on line. It's the emery powder that sharpens the point. The walnut shells help keep the pins clean of hand oils.
I usually just stick them in the berry hanging from my tomato and hope for the best, that is such a weird sentence 🤣 www.joann.com/tomato-pin-cushion-w-strawberry-emery/8593964.html?
Can't wait to make this! I've been so excited about this design :))) How many yards of fabric did you end up using for one of these shirts, Bianca? Seems like maybe 1.5 would do it?
Fabric Mart online has a bunch of beautiful wool suiting colors! I got an amazing teal in herringbone suiting and a deep berry/plum suiting that I'm going to do a mix and match pant suit set(s) with :D
Ooooh, that is a pretty color and a very cool shirt! I have a website for you to check out Burnley and Trowbridge in Williamsburg, Va. They have lovely historical material. I found a dark olive drab green wool "Stuff" for $16.00 per yard; I have some of their wool "Stuff" it is very fine and drappy. The other one is again olive drab wool Plush, which is under the heading Wools, Woolens, Broadcloth & Coatings for $25.00 per yard. They send swatches! They also have linen, cotton, and silk. xoxo's Sandie
Did you say Tic tac? 😆 Could you edit down some of your existing look books to make short form content? Like an ad for your channel. I love the long form content but wouldn't mind seeing snippets of those look books repeatedly and you put so much work into them.
I do love a knock-off. If I had the patterning skills, I would knock-off everything. I could see a nasty polyester top and make it from linen. Enjoyed this video.
The Singer only does straight stitch, and I need "fancy" stretchy stitch patterns for working on stretch knit projects is all! The Singer 99k is just off screen waiting for me to get back to my woven projects ✨
Tempting me with the pattern exclusives… I had a month wher3 I got paid way less than I expected and panic cancelled everything but maybe I’ll rejoin for the fancy sewing
Wel I’ve had my Bernina 830 for 43 years now. We’ve sown everything from baby clothes to wedding dresses together. And I know exactly how she likes it. But one thing she does not like is if I sow over pins. Once in a while I try and every time pin and needle breaks. So I’ve kind of come to just do as she want it 😏
Sadly it looks like their gabardines are poly/rayon blends not wool 🧵 I wish I could feel coatings in person to know if they are too thick for a skirt 😂
@@TheClosetHistorian Ohh....😳 I never thought of that. I have had my huskylock for 35 years now and i only take a couple of sec. to fix the tension between type of fabricks. Its just so easy. Sorry 😮💨

Fabric Mart online has a bunch of beautiful wool suiting colors! I got an amazing teal in herringbone suiting and a deep berry/plum suiting that I'm going to do a mix and match pant suit set(s) with :D
Ooo,thank you!Lovely!

Thank you Sandie!
Did you say Tic tac? 😆 Could you edit down some of your existing look books to make short form content? Like an ad for your channel. I love the long form content but wouldn't mind seeing snippets of those look books repeatedly and you put so much work into them.
Thank you! I need to make some time to at least make them reels for insta, since Instagram loooves reels 😂
I do love a knock-off. If I had the patterning skills, I would knock-off everything. I could see a nasty polyester top and make it from linen. Enjoyed this video.
Thank you Beth!
I just bought a beautiful dark green wool from Britex. But it was $75 a yard. 😬😬😬
Forest green is such a standard colour for wool? German Trachten for men are almost always made of forest green wool?
Hey probably not as sharp as I use to be where’s the singer? 😮😊
Tbh I should cause I LOVED Synapse and I bet I missed loads
No worries ❤ The videos will always be there chilling for you to binge someday ✨
Thank you so very much! You are a goddess!
Thank you Becky!
I'm sorry but they way you said Amazon, it took me back to that "shame" Game of Thrones scene with the bells... 😅
Etsy has forest green wool material piece 1 yd. 62 in. wide (as of 2/28)
Never mind. I'm sending it to you.
Wel I’ve had my Bernina 830 for 43 years now. We’ve sown everything from baby clothes to wedding dresses together. And I know exactly how she likes it. But one thing she does not like is if I sow over pins. Once in a while I try and every time pin and needle breaks. So I’ve kind of come to just do as she want it 😏
This is why me and the Singer 99k are bffs, she doesn't mind my pins 🤣
Dang. I’m on vacation and only have a phone screen. Only a large screen will do for Bianca. I’ll just have to wait. 😢
Stylemaker fabrics has your Merlot, Teal and Olive gabardine for $18.99 a yard.
Sadly it looks like their gabardines are poly/rayon blends not wool 🧵 I wish I could feel coatings in person to know if they are too thick for a skirt 😂
It is impossible to find a good green wool. I've been looking for a while. Everything is olive
My fav colour. Maybe, as you mentioned it, the millenials can teach gen z a sense of humour. Their lives seem so bogged down and hard done by 😂
I think gen Z have a lot of humor! It's the only way to survive ✨
Forgive me I'm sure they have xx
I just wonder why you did not saw it together on your overlock......strange!!!🤔
The tension on my serger is a mess and I can be bothered to spend the hour fixing it 🤣
@@TheClosetHistorian Ohh....😳 I never thought of that. I have had my huskylock for 35 years now and i only take a couple of sec. to fix the tension between type of fabricks. Its just so easy. Sorry 😮💨
I also can't bear to wear things that don't show off my waist. 😅
"Non-Newtonian liquid solid." 🤨 So there is a name for that kind of fabric!
Short form isn't for me either. I can appreciate a 5-10 min video, but most of the RUclips content I consume exists in the 30-75 minute range.
