I love the nuance of this scene. The Nazi soldier doesn't show fear. He accepts his death like a man. This almost noble heroic music is playing as Donnie comes near. The line "bravery" frames him as a hero. Then it all goes away when the bat cracks him in the head. Donnie just beats his skull around like a polo ball. Fucking hilarious

Everytime I think of this scene and movie, I'd imagine another member of the Basterds: the 'Dart Jew.' For he carries several bar darts as weapons and names them after the neighborhoods of Manhattan.
I see Inglorious Basterds as kind of an anomaly. It has these brilliant vignettes that, on their own, contain some of QT's greatest directorial achievements. The prologue with Waltz and the French farmer WILL be remembered as one of the greatest scenes in film history. But a movie is the sum of all its parts. When I reconcile the ledger I've never felt Basterds adds up to a great film. Like this scene for instance. What exactly does QT want us to take away from all this? To feel empathy and respect for the god damn German? Because that's exactly how it comes off. Our supposed "good guys" look like serial killers, not soldiers.
@@HAPPYFUNTIMEx2 I hear you, but is that really what he intended? I'm not really sold on that. This feels more like killing as a means of achieving catharsis.
That's kinda the point. Ambiguity of righteousness and heroism is what war is. You inherently seem to have black and white views of righteousness and virtue being only attributed to the Americans. There were millions of German people who saw the German soldiers as just as righteous and virtuous at the time. And yes it was brutal and cathartic murder. It is a theme of the movie along with being tactical battle plans revealed earlier in the movie. Brutalize them and leave one to tell the tale to instill more fear in their enemy.
@@andrewk7611 Cathartic to who? The audience or the sadists on the screen? My favorite part was when it said, "This video was made with Movavi video editor trial." And then it said it a second time and I really got a laugh. But the third time - damn - my gut still hurts from how funny that was. Because my god, you might forget in those intervening 5 seconds that it was being recorded with Movavi !!! Trouble is - one is so busy trying to see past the never-ending watermark - thanks Movavi !!! - that it's impossible to actually determine whether the recording quality is worth the price tag. Maybe if they kept their stupid "ooh, look at me, it was Movavi ... see? See? Movavi!! Oh my god, did you forget yet? Movavi!" propaganda off the screen long enough, one could ascertain if it's worth buying. I mean, for shit's sake maybe 5 seconds every minute would be good enough to ensure no one fucking forgets it was Movavi - but they plaster that crap across the screen 95% of the time and give a potential buyer only 5% of the time to actually look at an unsullied recording. Unless, of course, Movavi's asshole watermark appears on everything even after you buy the damn thing.

Join he service and do the job and then you might be able to make snarky remarks.
Damn these guys really aren't that much better than the guys they're fighting
That German had balls !
The funny part is: the soldier being *brave* was what essentially put other soldiers lives in danger. Proved that it was a no win situation for them
"Damnit Hershberg" 😂
It might just be the best scene although that's certainly debatable. However, the constant intrusive ads bannered across the screen made it almost unwatchable and sucked all the enjoyment out of the experience.
Bear Jew, was the first Negan!
Dammit, Hirschberg! OMG! Great, great film.
Tarantino & Coens running neck 'n' neck.
We know Lynch isn't campaigning because things haven't gotten wierd enough yet.
Peace on Earth. Amen
That's QT's movies though. Ambiguity.
My point is that I don't personally believe there was any real deeper meaning to the scene except to show a highly stylized murder of a POW. And no offense guy but I was kind of in a war myself so I'd be careful before proclaiming you know "what war is."
@@Mc.Garnaglewhat war???

"Damnit hersburgh"
Not that anyone asked but Hugo Stiglitz is actually the name of a Mexican actor. He was in a few movies ...one being Night of 1000 Cats.
He was in SLC punk too
i totally forgot about that movie...lol

All the overlay ad crap ruins the whole experience...🙄
I'm just wondering, does Movavi makes videos?
Im subbing just to comment and encourage you to be a pirate. Arr matey. The pirate bay welcomes you.
Hands down best Albanian translation ever
that stupid movavi pop up just ruins it
Brad pitt, amazing actor. Love his hillbilly accent in this scene ❤
The sound of the bat against his skull is so satisfying
there is the HOLLYWOOD Version of WW2 and the REAL History Version of WW2, which do you choose to Believe?
I wonder what editing software this guy used to make the video
Love this scene!
German over English subtitles. Nicely done
This video was made with Movavi Video Editor in case you didn’t know
People hate propaganda but they love to endulge in it
Wow a smart comment
@Chris Spedling no other subject in western history has had more money spent on it than Hitler, ww2 and the holocaust, people are delusional while the blood of natives flows under their own feet
We get it. This video was made with Movavi editing equipment. No need to splatter it on the screen every 10 seconds
This was the best acting I have ever seen from Brad Pitt!!! Loved the whole sad and horrible movie...the characters were so valiant...quite wiulling to die for eliminating the Nazi's...opening scene is soooooo well done...the tension...the brutality...the tragedy...the sadness.
The guy who plays Hugo NEEDS to be BJ blaskovich in I live action movie
I hate his scene because he started with the head. Start with the knees then work your way up
such a fun fantasy scene!
Fantasy indeed
Tarantino has a knack for picking the perfect track for scenes. Right there with Scorsese.
The kraut sgt then became a vampire after they all left because The Master saved him.
For as big as the Movavi logo is, I love how the HUGO STIGLITZ is bigger 😂
Are you using the Movavi Video Editor Trial?
This was amazing because of Brad Pitt, don't get me wrong, but the opening scene, the bar shootout and the strudel scene were all magnificently over-the-top, dialed-up-to-11 tense.
I love how they all laughed when the last german gave in, because the guy who refused to give the information died for no reason 😂😂😂
Keeping your honor is a pretty good reason
@@ADUSNnazi. And honor 😂😂

Wonder what editor was used to make this video
Exactly how long was it from the time that Aldo carved his signature on the boy until said boy was talking to hitler? Cuz that swastika was pretty well healed...
It's also one of the inaccurate militant parts of the movie because if you're indoors you have to take your hat off in the military it's called uncovering
@@daddyfatsacksmf i have no idea what the nazi protocol was. In the US Army, we keep our cover on indoors if we're under arms.
He stares right down that bat like a man. Now a dead man lol
Dead in physical body, but not in spirit. The spirit never dies. Now, this "dead man" can go invisibly attack the bear jews' mother and rape his sister if he wanted to. 😆
Vrappy vid with that ad that keeps popping up. Id like to take a bat to it for it
My fav part which I am here,
Hey donnie
"Yah"
You wrecked this whole scene..this scene is pissed all over by your ads for movavi. Clean that crap up.
The best scene was the opening scene at the farm. That could stand alone as a short film.
How the bear jew heard him whisper that he respectfully declined from all the way inside the tunnel is beyond me
The German Sergeant was the most honorable man in this entire movie..!
Yeah i bet he was honorable as he helped murder 6 million innocent people.
Yeah it takes a rare breed to face death/torture and accept it without trying to save ones own life. I think the vast majority of us would act more like the 2nd guy.
@@cwjalexxyup. He saluted the officer, set the example, refused to betray his people to save himself and took this violent war crime like a man. This is what we used to call a "Man".
