If it was simply undercooking the lentils, this type of thing would be happening a lot more often and doctors wouldn’t be stumped at what was causing it. That’s my take at least. Reading all the personal stories on Reddit is insane.

There’s actually been a surprising amount of stories in the news lately about the contamination of agricultural food crops. Like run off from factory farms has contaminated a lot of crops, especially in areas where flooding has happened. Like I’m in Canada and there’s a big debate going around about whether or not fields that got flooded are safe to use to grow food.

If it is the crumbles, it might not necessarily be the lentils that are contaminated. It could be the leeks or some other ingredient especially if the plants were fertilized with manure. On the other hand, that's usually more of an issue for foods that you eat raw like lettuce or the strawberries mentioned in the video. Some bacteria and fungi do leave behind toxins that remain in the food even after the pathogens are killed by cooking.

I have never heard of people getting sick from lentils before, whether as a topping or eating a whole soup of it. Lentils is not a “dose makes the poison” type of food. There is some contaminant in their crumbles. Theories about Tara flower ingredient is currently being researched.

I know this isn't the point of the video but when talking about the voluntary removal of Bendectin I think it's important to recognize the context that this took place right after Thalidomide was taken off the market because of the birth defects it caused. It makes sense that people would be afraid of taking sleep medication during pregnancy so shortly after learning a very popular sleep aid *did* cause severe birth defects.

Product liability is a big business for class action lawyers. Those that had been harmed by improperly handled food will get settlements but if it turns up a few pieces of the batch got tanited, the company can push the settlements on there supplier. But ultimately i believe daily harvest as a brand will be tarnished.

I think the company should acknowledge the customer immediately... So... as a person that ran a 22 million dollar/year soil business in my past. Personally in my experience all food batches have to be tested... even for soil (which is considered a food product at the volumes the company I worked for produced). I personally in that instance would test the product batch that was sent to the customer immediately (they should all be easily identifiable and traced easily and should always have a sample that's frozen) I would email all customers regardless about the complaint immediately and stress the safety procedures but also offer a refund. The loyalty you receive from being transparent (everyone knows things happen) is way better than advertising. lol too bad all these companies won't pay skilled management what it's worth lol I work for myself now. I posted this before I seen the end... we had a a lab (as should all food companies) it should take maybe 4-10 hours. While things can still spiral out of control that could have been heavily mitigated by immediate contact, immediate testing and also customer support. 4 days is insane

I haven't had anything from Daily Harvest, but in late 2019/ early 2020, I had a lot of issues with my gallbladder. I ended up with a gallstone that got stuck in my bile duct and it basically caused my liver to start to fail. My liver levels were AWFUL. Luckily my liver fully recovered after a few weeks. I did have to get my gallbladder removed though. It had nothing to do with what I was eating and was most likely genetics (almost every woman on both sides of my family have had their gallbladder removed).

I came here from Swell Entertainment's video- not super important, but just an FYI. I personally feel like you were a bit too dismissive of some people's issues with Daily Harvest (not the hyper-aggressive ones, obviously), because a lot of the original emails sent out weren't very appropriate from the level of severity people claimed their reactions to the product were. These original emails were also very few and far between, seemingly primarily, if not only, sent to influencers who received the products for free. That combined with the distasteful first post about the product by the company on their social media made me feel like DH didn't really take the reports seriously at first. There have also been reports in the past where customers had received products that contained inedible objects or even foods where allergens were not even marked on the product ingredients, such as coconut (how substantiated these claims are, I can't say, but it's just far too many claims in my opinion). I'm not going to call you a shill or tell you that I think your dismissiveness was entirely unjustified, just that I personally felt you either didn't know the full scope or don't have a very deep sympathy for the people potentially effected by this situation. Your language did change into a tone I appreciated a lot more towards the end of the video, though. I'll give you that. So I'm not going to accuse you of not caring either. I just think this is very different from a vaccine scare at this point.
I guess this is a situation where I'm going to take a bit from both you and Swell Entertainment: Daily Harvest is both entirely too expensive to take a potential risk to my health 'and' far too unwilling to take customer concerns seriously from the get-go.
Is it the lentils, the leeks, poisonous mushrooms, or someone who sneezed too hard at their station? Who knows. It's too pricy of a risk for me.
One thing I think we can both agree on is that no company, even a billion dollar one, should be required to pay the medical bills of a person if there's zero evidence of their medical issues being the cause of the company. I think their $10 off coupon offers were stupid though.

To be fair, and I doubt the instagram commenters know/knew this: most recalls end up being voluntary recalls since even if the FDA tells you you have to recall, as long as you go "oh okay yeah" it counts as voluntary. The only non-voluntary recalls are ones where companies don't comply with the FDA request to recall, which is pretty uncommon. Because of this, consumers might assume a "voluntary" recall is the company taking an abundance of caution while instead could be of any severity.

I feel like a 4-day turnaround to address this is honestly pretty good. Hopefully they will take the next steps to fully investigate everything and cover costs for those affected, but most companies it would take them weeks, or years even.

I have used Daily Harvest off and on for about two years. It is pricey, but very yummy. And I like to think most of it is pretty healthy.
While there is an abundance of packaging, none of it is plastic. I get the smoothies, which are packaged in cardboard containers, the box is cardboard, the extra packaging material is cardboard. The only plastic is a thin sheet around the dry ice. Again, I still totally get that it's a lot of packing material, but it's all recyclable, at least.... (I agree on the price, though. Wish it was cheaper!)
Maybe it used to be packaged in plastic, prior to two years ago, though, as I didn't get Daily Harvest before then.

Their service seemed way overpriced. I just did not see the point. My sister worked for Home Chef for three days in March of 2020, and said it was a weird experience. The company was so weird about measuring exact ingredients, and there seemed to be a lot of food waste. There are even salad and stir fry kits at the grocery store you can get delivered with Instant Cart, and this is a cheaper option. There are even frozen fruits kits you can puree with almond or oat milk. Not sure why people think these meal kits are so convenient.

Four (4) days is not "fast" for announcing a food contamination issue, IMO. Maybe I am not as laissez-faire as some, but the sharp increase in food recalls issued in the USA is (supposedly) because of extra caution being used-and there are still more deaths in 2022 than 2021 or 2020 (that are related to recalled food). As far as I know, recall strategies are always executed immediately, even as they are under review, because these issues are very VERY serious- and if a company decided to put up a social media post or even a website post about potentially harmful food instead of contacting everyone who bought it through their online service IMMEDIATELY, I am never buying from that company again. This isn't even a grocery store product, they sell and ship directly to the individual, so they have a record of who bought it and they have their contact information. I don't think that's at all an unreasonable expectation.
