Hemp milk *has* taken off! I worked as a barisa from 2017 until this year, and we always offered lots of options for alternative milks, and I loved seeing the trends. We stopped carrying rice milk in 2018 because no one ordered it. Ironically, they'd taken oatmilk away before I started for the same reason, but by 2019 we had to start carrying it again. Hemp milk has always been the choice of the real crunchy folks, but it really took off around 2018/19 when people started talking about how harmful almond milk was for the environment. It enjoyed a short hayday though, because then oat milk BLEW UP! To the point that, not only were we constantly running out, but our suppliers couldn't keep up with demand! They're finally able to keep up with demand, and a couple more brands are available commercially as well, but man we still struggle to stock enough!

I think soy is a powerhouse but if you have GI issues like me soy protein ferments in the stomach and can cause discomfort. I can sometimes tolerate pea milk and there’s a brand I like called Sproud, it’s from Sweden. Silk exists in my country (Brazil), but it's really expensive, something like 20 BRL for 1 liter, while cow's milk is around 3.99 to 6.99 per liter on average depending on the brand. So not affordable at all for most people. And I also never see Silk soy milk in the shelves. I bought an almond milk 1 liter carton once just to see. Worse almond milk I have ever drank. Very strong, ruined my tea. I tried Almond Breeze's too (which is also very expensive per liter), and it was infinitely better. I am really curious to drink Silk's soy milk, I wanna know if it tastes bad too lol.

I love nuts and buy containers of mixed nuts but don’t like the hazelnuts. Something about their hardness and bitterness and flaky skin, idk. I made milk out of the leftover hazelnut ones once and I found it intense enough not to like it either, but if you like hazelnuts and make your own as an occasional treat it’s pretty enjoyable :)

I think rice milk has it's place on the market. Out of things you can get allergic reaction to soy and nuts are pretty popular and really nasty in reactions. Like when I was working at a very popular fast food chain they were really serious about soy milk cross-contamination, like the same level as shrimp. So in places where you have less specialized options (like currently in Poland most stores have oat, soy, coconut and rice) it's gonna be your go-to. Also, you need to be cautious with coconut milk, I've seen tik tok that in the US alpro coconut is a soy-based milk with coconut flavor, in Poland it's rice-based

Unfortunately a lot of what she says in this video sounds off because it's clearly removed from its context. Comments like rice milk not containing gluten could have been said because she was comparing grain milks specifically as a preference or Banana milk having B12 because maybe she was comparing other fruit milks we haven't heard about. She mentioned hemp milk not needing as much additives for stability and maybe her comments about "clean" ingredients were likening it to the process of creating hemp milk as compared to pea or potato milk which is very highly processed. Either way, for me nutrition of milks is not black and white and revolves around whatever gaps I might have in my diet. I currently drink Soy milk for the protein although I would consider Almond milk because adequate Vitamin E is far harder to satisfy compared to protein because I eat a lot of beans, grains, nuts/seeds and tofu. Vitamin E however isn't found in significant amounts except for a handful of foods and I don't always want to eat almonds or shit tons of hazelnuts or peanuts all the time to meet my needs. In theory, grain milks could be chosen because grains are often a good source of zinc though I don't know to what degree it's reflected in milks. Either way, I'd never choose a milk that isn't fortified. I choose milks specifically because it's fortified because I don't want to buy garbage bag-fulls of greens and stuff my face daily to struggle to meet my needs. I also feel cheated because she sounds like she really knows what she's talking about and I wish they'd release the full version because we were clearly robbed.

I also read that most places that cultivate almond is causing local endangerment of (non-honey) bee species due to the amount of space they need, which requires a lot of land to be cleared. I don't think it is as bad as palm oil, but I guess it is similar.

Did she mention nitrogen fixation with potatoes? There's some minor evidence that potatoes might be able to fix a small amount of nitrogen, but they aren't very effective at it. It's the legumes, soy, pea, peanut, etc that are actually really good nitrogen fixers. The research farms that I've worked at sometimes grow peas as a cover crop primarily for their ability to fix nitrogen. No one ever grows potatoes to fertilize the soil, but we do with legumes fairly often.

"oak milk" - Lol! I missed that when I watched the original video. And "Silk Unsweetened Organic Soy Milk" does seem to be pretty good with only a few ingredients. I had been drinking only Trader Joe's unsweetened shelf-stable soy milk, which literally has only two ingredients: organic soy beans and water. I figured that was the best because I didn't want anything else in it. I make sure I get enough calcium from a cal/mag/zinc supplement. But lately I've been reading that getting calcium from food, either "naturally" as in cow's milk, or in plant milk as an additive (typically calcium carbonate) is best. Though some say that cow's milk is still a better source of calcium than plant milk with it added. I've lately been trying Milkadamia Macadamia nut milk, which also has few ingredients, and only calcium (as calcium phosphate) and vitamin D added. Since calcium phosphate is the same form found in cow's milk I thought that might be the most equivalent? Sadly though, Milkadamia is very low in protein with only 1 gm per 8 oz.
