    I was confused by who they thought their customer was and what advantage they provide.
    It is NOT for those who do not know how to cook. You still have to chop, cook and measure. It is not for those who want to save time cooking. It is not a money-saving option. Perhaps it is for those who just can't figure out what to make? Or for those who don't want to shop.
    For me the only benefit was that they had done the shopping. But I really don't mind shopping. I can buy better ingredients much cheaper with less waste. I can find a wider choice of recipes online. So for me, it was just pointless.

    • @gazneregina5373
      @gazneregina5373 2 года назад +6

      So just to address your question, I feel like it is for those who don’t want to use their brain to cook (no shade, neither do I!!) because it takes to much effort. I would definitely pay for somebody to buy, deliver, and prepare ingredients just to save me time but most importantly, effort. If I would’ve known about meal services like this when I was depressed and electing to just not eat, I would’ve certainly looked into these. But then probably not bought them because of how expensive they are

    Me watching this, eating my breakfast, and enjoying my “add in more protein” to my “tapas” plate, and hearing all about the protein 😆🥰
    I have strawberries, snap peas, tomatoes, a 1/5 of a smaller avocado, dried mango without sugar, vegan cheese (no protein, we know the struggle with non protein vegan cheese), a potato crepes (store bought thing we have here in Norway) with vegan Nutella, and then: some smoked tofu, a part of a protein bar, and some Alpro caramel coffee ice coffee protein drink 😋🥰💪🏻
    Balance is the key, maybe a little low on fiber, but at least I got in my fruit, veggies, protein and it is delicious 🥰

    I think purple carrot is a great service for people like myself that are very much novices in the kitchen and live with non-vegans. I subscribed to PC throughout a good part of rona and found it overall very enjoyable, but I have a small two person household and part of what made it so convenient for us was that it allowed us to grocery shop much less frequently (that could be said for any meal kit service though really). One of the big selling points of PC too for me actually was that they include that booklet with all of the recipes for the week in it - having easy access to so many recipes has really expanded my range of vegan cooking and i still use most of them when i want to cook something other than tofu veggies and rice lol. Also helped that the recipes we tried were very delicious, to the point that my non-vegan housemate was genuinely excited each week to try a new recipe because of how good they were.
    I do agree though that the packaging is extremely wasteful - that's honestly the main reason why I ended up canceling, especially considering that many other competing meal kit services have a much greater focus on sustainability. All of the veggies I received were good quality as well, though that may also be due to the fact that I live in California and most of the produce was locally sourced 🤷‍♀️ idk i do think PC has a lot of potential if they would just improve in those areas, but it was interesting to hear your perspective on this as someone with a much different home environment than myself.

    I wonder if, to cut down on plastic waste, there could be a meal service that where they say “hey pick one of these packages that’ll do x number of meals” and all the meals focus around a few different ingredients so there could be less packaging. And it could teach people about how to meal prep on their own by just doing variations on the same ingredients.

    I subscribed to a service and they sent me meals with dairy. They were very apologetic and comped the entire box. They also added an extra box to end of the discounted service. I still made the meals without using the added cheese although I needed to add protein to them. I didn’t mind. I think I made them better. So some services are more generous with their return/mistake policy than others I guess. I was the only one eating them so with the personally added ingredients, those meals lasted the week. However, I no longer use them but it was convenient and fast when I did. The waste overwhelmed me. Just…no.

    Ever since Levi Hildebrand did his comparison of HelloFresh, FreshPrep, etc., I've come to think that FreshPrep should be the industry standard when it comes to waste reduction. It's too bad it's only a Western Canada thing.
    They aren't vegan-only by any means, but they do offer a vegan diet option. For instance, this week's lineup for 4/23/2022-4/27/2022 shows that 3/10 choices are vegan. Last week's was 2/10, unfortunately, and 2/10 for the week before that.
    Purple Carrot seems to have the same pitfalls as HelloFresh with all of the plastic waste.

My partner has fallen in love with the sticky seitan so it's become a nearly weekly staple in our household. Smucker's apricot preserves don't work quite the same so I'm still working on that.
    Overall, I found it overpriced and disappointing. The lack of veggies in each meal was unbelievable to us. We began supplementing them because there were so little. We've gone back to finding our own recipes and are enjoying our meals much more. Also, the amount of plastic for something that was supposedly eco-friendly was RIDICULOUS. I despised having so much plastic that couldn't all be recycled.

    • @truthbetold8233
      @truthbetold8233 2 года назад

      I think it's about Different types of protein featuring different essential amino acids. Some proteins are considered 'complete' proteins for that reason while others are pretty limited in their amino acid profile. - So when you do have a meal only featuring 'incomplete' protein, it's probably best to have a variety of sources.

    • @xJanca21
      @xJanca21 2 года назад

      She's saying that for a meal to be considered "high protein", you'd want 20% of the total calories to be from protein. So for example if the whole serving is 400 calories, you'd want 20% (80 calories) to be from protein. 1g of protein is about 4 calories so 80 calories of protein = 20g of protein. The meal she's looking at was 750 calories, so it should have at least 38g of protein for it to be classified as "high protein" (if you use the 20% rule). Since it had only 23g of protein, it is really not that great (considering the overall calories per serving being so high).

    I have done them for three months as I work through a large system migration. And will probably finish August. But here’s my breakdown: too much oil. And I say this as someone that loves olive oil. But a large percentage of their meals are frying with either vegetable or olive oil. Hmmmmm…. So I don’t mind these but not in every single meal and a tbsp. I do get them on time. I suggest; if yoh want to do it do it for 1-2 months; get their cookbooks. Star the ones you like. Redo it in the future.

    I ordered Purple Carrot for about 9 months during start of the pandemic. It was great and introduced me to a lot of yummy vegan recipes. I go nuts for the Chicken Dumplings - which use Oyster Mushrooms - along with other meals. I still have the recipe books and put my favorite recipes in a binder.
    But yah, the amount of waste is comical and the primary reason why I stopped. So much plastic.
    FYI, their customer service is great.

    My nonvegan parents have been using purple carrot for over five years and they love it. It helps them eat more vegan food and they find it convenient and tasty. Before starting purple carrot, they used to always order takeout, so now their diet is much better. It's true that the dishes are fancy but that's why they like them. They're not very kid friendly, as my parents have a hard time convincing my little brother to eat the dishes, but at least he's getting exposed to more veggies. The dishes take a long time to cook but my parents think that's worth it for the tasty food. And yeah there's a lot of waste, but my they try to reuse the containers.

    The ramen being spicy, and not just "white people spicy"...when I lived in Albuquerque NM, they called that "gringo mouth". They put Hatch green chilis on/in everything and the pain for a newcomer was real. But you eventually build up a tolerance and end up *wanting* those chilis in/on everything. Too bad it's nearly impossible to find decent green chilis where I live now. I had to switch to jalapenos. ;)
    P.S. Why would they give you the recipes for the stuff you didn't order? (something you didn't like) Because you can still cook them if you buy your own ingredients and you can see what else you might like to order from them. I kind of collect cookbooks and recipes so would see that as a small positive. But if their recipes are terrible, not so much.

    This obsession with protein, I just don’t understand. I know you’ve made videos explaining, but I didn’t get it then either. The takeaway I got was that vegans needed a little more than omnivores……sure, but even if that’s the case, that doesn’t mean we need 90g, 100g. Longevity specialIsts like David Sinclair and Valter Longo say protein is actually not good to have too much of, particularly at our age. They even say Lysine is one of the worst offenders in its correlation with aging. The time you need more protein is at age 65+, before, you actually need less. 60 to 70 grams is the ideal window for an adult average size male, shorter men and women even less. 10 to 15% of your calories coming from protein is fine (more like 10 to 12), more than that is dangerous.

    • @hannahmitchell87
      @hannahmitchell87 2 года назад +2

      How is it dangerous? I thought a lot of the negative effects of too much protein were in reference to animal protein?

    • @hugomarquez3189
      @hugomarquez3189 2 года назад

      @@hannahmitchell87 it has to do with the mTOR pathway, which regulates metabolism, muscle growth, cell growth. Certain amino acids like leucine and lysine, found also in beans, activate it, and mTOR can promote cancer growth. Populations with dwarfism actually have no cancer, because mTOR is not activated as much in them. So protein, sure, what we need to keep our muscles going, I eat beans everyday, but if we get more than we need it may start growing cancers that we all have, through angiogenesis (growing blood vessels). I think promoting high protein is irresponsible, in light of what researchers have found.
