Just watched their 1967 interview... Olivia still looks at Leonard as he speaks with the same intensity, and he still speaks of her as if she is ever his. They're beautiful, they made Romeo and Juliet their own.
they were both *breathtakenly beautiful* in Romeo and Juliet, filmed when they were only 16 &17. Its *clear* from photos, interviews & the movie itself that *Leonard was passionately drawn to Olivia* Its a flame he's likely still carrying today. Olivia being a year younger, impetuous, childlike with agoraphobia *clung to Leonard for safety* through all the filming, post-production & publicity. So there was an *equal* depth of emotion between them. In the movie, this translated into the fury & desperation of young love. And it was the first time that romantic leads in a serious beloved classical drama were portrayed by such extremely beautiful young teen *unknowns* Olivia was the embodiment of saintly & gracious images seen in 13th century paintings, and Leonard tremoured gently throughout with romantic masculinity. No wonder the world remains enamored 50 yrs later.
I believe that Olivia and Leonard were *exactly* who Shakespeare envisaged for his masterpiece. There will never be a Romeo and Juliet to top Franco Zeffirelli's. WHAT a gift it was and is.
I just finished watching their 1967 interview and I cannot wrap my head around how fast times flies! They’re old now, but it only took me two clicks to travel 50+ years!!
Yes! This won't come out the way I intend but I watched this over and over again as a teenager in the 90s and romanticized my mother's teenage years when the movie actually came out. The makeup techniques and men's hairstyles used in the film were what everyone saw in current culture. Like some people can spot a car or a motorcycle and know the model and year, I identify decades and the passing of time within the past 100+ years of film style. The film/cinematography style of Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo & Juliet very deeply connects me to the excitement and allure of the production and cast as if I was there in the late 60s, living through it with my mom. 💗
Fifty years later they are still amazingly attractive. Olivia still looks at him when a question is asked just like she did in the way back. How chemistry works with people is inexplicable. When it does , whether romantic or non-romantic, it’s magic.
Leonard has said in other interviews, that it was love t first sight when he saw Olivia and that he loved her very much. Olivia said they dated some. I don't think he has ever gotten over her. It is too bad they didn't end up together, but he seems happy with his wife and she with her husband, so I guess it turned out for the best. They are still very dear friends. she said in her book, that when they met again after many, many years, she saw his little boy smile and she "went down the rabbit hole" and started to cry. Leonard told her he understood and came to her and held her. She said the Romeo held his Juliet in a sweet embrace.
Of all the stars who ever walked Hollywood - her face is still the most breathtaking in its innocence and sweetness. I thought I had never seen a face so beautiful, and I think I still haven't. And it's wonderful that after 50 years their friendship is as strong as ever. She speaks up much more than she did in that 1968 interview, with a lot more confidence, and she's been through so much... but in a place like Hollywood, to have a friendship that lasted all this time - I think they have something special. Sometimes, platonic is more special ;)
It's so funny because I watched when Olivia and Leonard were teenagers and answering questions and Olivia still laughs the same and she still looks at Leonard the same. Love it!
@@Strawberryglaze I watched this movie in '74 with the rest of my 8th grade classmates at our town's movie theater. Our teacher was sitting in the back and she said she got such a kick out of the boys reaction when Olivia leaned over the rail during the balcony scene. The boys, me included, had been sitting back in their chairs acting half-interested but that all changed to full-attention when this beautiful young woman simply bent over the rail...LOL.
I was age 14 going on 15 (just younger than them) in 1969 (it took 6 months after it was opened in NYC for the film to be released in my hometown movie theater on Long Island), when I saw Zeffirelli's film version of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Absolutely blew my mind away, enriching my heart & soul. The film, West Side Story, too,
I'm 66 and believe this is the most beautiful movie I have ever seen. I remember being in a theater with a super large screen & the beauty & passion & music 🎶 just enveloped me! And that 1st scene with Romeo walking up the street, his friends call his name.... Romeo stops & looks up, full face filling that huge screen! The entire theater was suddenly one huge gasp as every girl in that auditorium immediately melted into Leonard's sky blue eyes and amazing sweet face. I will remember that one moment my entire life! That massive collective gasp! 😂 Oh, and blubbering like a baby at the end. And the music 🎶 🎶 🎶.... A movie of total perfection. So nice to see they have remained friends through all these years. ❤️

These two actors can never be bested in the roles of Romeo and Juliet. This is a great interview, and Zeffirelli’s production of the film deserved all the recognition it got, and more! This beautiful movie will always be my favorite... My husband and I both loved the musical score, and used portions of it for our wedding!
The black-and-white MGM version had mature adult Leslie Norman and Normal Shearer in the title roles. Shearer's rival, Joan Crawford, saw the film and said to her friend, "I couldn't wait for those two old birds to die, could you?"
The most incredibly lovely and comforting thing about this is that they are so close to each other after 50 years! They were the original Leo and Kate. I’m so happy seeing how sweet on Olivia Leonard is. They are both such wonderful actors and beautiful, funny people.
I was 17 when I was visiting a friend in San Diego, they said Romeo and Juliet were playing at the cinema, so we went, Olivia Was gorgeous and Leonard so very handsome, you both were a beautiful couple, they could not have pick a better couple, It was so moving, so beautifully done, when the movie was over both of us had streams of tears running done our face. Wow haven't seen either of these actors for so many years. They both look so great still. We were reading Romeo and Juliet in 9th grade English class. I was so bored. Then the movie came out and I fell in love with it and Leonard Whiting. We lived next door to a drive in movie. I walked over to see it every night for over a month. I can now quote it line for line. I even grew my hair out long to look like the beautiful Olivia Hussey. She has aged a lot better than I. But I had such a crush on Leonard. I have never seen a better version of Romeo and Juliet since. Thanks for the memories.
Same. I watched this in my 9th grade English about a year ago, just looked this up now for some nostalgia. Even then I knew that this was probably the most remarkable cast ever in a movie, Olivia was gorgeous beyond belief and Leonard was practically a Greek god. But even the nurse and Mercutio and all the other characters were cast perfectly. And Zeffirelli directed it so well. It’s really one of those moments where you think about how the cards just completely fell into place for some event to happen. People talk about how remarkable it was that Washington and Adams and Jefferson and all the other founders were all in right place at the right time for the revolution to happen and be successful, and that was really the case for this movie as well. God’s plan I guess. This is by far the best movie adaptation of a Shakespeare play and there will never be another one like it.
Judy Davis I was about 14 when this came out and my wonderful English teacher arranged for us to go to the cinema to see it! It was brilliant. I wish I had it on DVD.
Yes...and chose HER of all women&actresses of the world to play the role of Mother of God.. And not every female can be chosen to play it.. Great Zefirelli..rest in peace and stay in glory..
This is rather lovely, seeing them together 50+ years later, like the alternate ending we all hoped for R&J. They are still really beautiful, both of them!!!
So true. If R and J had lived, they would look like these two. And if we use these two actors as fantasy stand ins for the characters, we can see from how the actors talk here, they still seem to dig each other. So J & R would still having a loving happy flirty marriage into old age..
How lovely to see them together again. They both look wonderful. Without a doubt, the best “Romeo and Juliet” I’ve ever seen. That movie made me realize that Shakespeare could be more accessible and not just something tedious you learned in school.
I thought it was so nice of them to pay tribute not only to Franco, but to many other crew members, that are usually left in the shadow. The way it came naturally, speaks a lot of them both, too.
Thanks to this production of Romeo and Juliet thousands of my 9th grade English students fell in love with Shakespeare. There has never been a more enjoyable creation of these two young lovers.
Happy Birthday Olivia! She is 70 years old today and still a beauty! This is my favorite and I think the best version of Romeo and Juliet ever filmed. Thank you Oliva and Leonard, and thank you Franco Zeffirelli for this film!
I just love them so much ❤ Olivia's humour is gold, and she's giggles didn't change with time. How she's looking at Leonard after a question is just like back then... Leonard's patient relaxed vibe is feels the same but he's more talkative now I think wich is good to see ^^ And how they compliment eachother omg 🥺 Such a beautiful chemistry even after 50 years ❤ I hope I can have this kind of connection with somebody one day that will last until our old days at least.
They are just like an old married couple- Leonard's comment about the "times"- the 1960's were fraught with the violence change often brings BUT those days also had a kind of grace, a genuine wish for humanity to come together, to heal- goodness. It isn't corny. I am so happy this film is shown in high schools, it has to make kids fall in love with iambic pentameter. I am STRUCK by how gracious these two are in their paying tribute to all the brilliant artists who contributed to the film. Classy people, then and now. Class. Thank you BFI and Olivia and Leonard. I know what I will be doing this afternoon in lieu of dreary housework- and I just finished a most moving novel by Maggie O'Farrell, Hamnet and Judith, about Shakespeare's wife and family.
I think we all know that they really did spend a unique time of their lives together in the most intimate way only two young lovers could have.....and that's wonderful.
I can't believe it was 51 years when i first saw this movie. I was in the 10th grade and our English class was bused into a Boston theater and i have to say this movie blew me away..!! I had such a crush on Olivia....
I was 13 when this movie came out and I thought it was the most romantic thing I'd ever seen. No VCRs back then, so I bought the soundtrack and listened to it so much that I, to this day, still have much of the play memorized. All of my girlfriends and myself were in love with Leonard Whiting.
I was 14 when I watched it in a small theater nearby...14 times! It was in 1977 in Moscow where I still live and every time I saw that this movies was on in other theaters I was on my way to watch it again and again. I had no idea that the film was so popular and that the actors geve so many interviews and how they looked like in real life. Internet geve me this graet universe from the past making me as happy as I was falling in love and feeling like Juliet.
I was 10.5 when Zeffirelli released this Masterwork. I had older sisters, so my parents let me go see it with them. What a gift, to be introduced to Shakespeare this way. I think I saw R&J at least a dozen times in the theatre (those were the days when a movie ran until people stopped buying tickets). I have a DVD of this, as well. The best Romeo and Juliet EVER. I mean, seriously - even after 50 years, the connection between these two friends is beyond beautiful. The supporting cast were excellent as well. Hard to believe some of the outrage over seeing Leonard’s bare bum - which would be tame for prime time, now. “What a time it was…a time it was…it was…a time of innocence…a time of confidences”. - Paul Simon
I was lucky enough to see this on the big screen when I was 12.the most beautiful movie ever made.ive never seen anything like that movie since.thank you for making it!!!
I was so lucky to have seen this movie, as I was close in age to Juliet (actually Olivia’s age). It is one of the most of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen! I even bought the theme music to play - piano arrangement. There were no video copies to play on videocassette, but the film had a huge impact on popular culture. ❤️
I have loved these actors my entire life since I was 14. In 1968 ! It remains the best movie that I have ever seen beautiful people wonderful acting. Thank you for changing my life
Hello Kat. This was in December 2016 in Santa Monica, California at the Aerotheatre. Will let you know what is next. Olivia already had a public signing of her book on 31 July 2018 in Los Angeles.
I was a teenager when I saw the movie with my bff & my DAD! I was mortified when they were in BED. I was sitting next 2 my Dad, sliding down in my seat. I never talked about the movie with him. I loved the movie my whole life. I memorized some of the scenes. So beautiful, so passionate, just perfect.
This is the 1st, and only "Romeo & Juliette" that I can watch over, and over, each time like I never watched it before. I watched it the 1st time in high school. Fell in love with them.
WOW! She STILL Looks at him with wonder and... kind of a Love and Passion! I think they MUST have had something together because of doing this movie together?!
I saw this when I skipped class. I was 12 and in love with both of them, equally. I thought then that I'd never have seen two people as beautiful, as perfect and perfectly suited to Romeo and Juliet. Now, I checked my heart at 63, and I still feel the same Olivia's still has those eyebrows that had a certain slant upward whenever she looked worried. They still slant upwards and that makes the child that I was very, very happy. Oh God, Romeo and Juliet, oh God, Len and Olivia. Good to see you again!! Thank you U-TUBE.💔
Люди-легенда ! Такие молодые так натурально , без фальши сыграли свои роли . Это неповторимо ! Жаль что нет перевода , но всеравно смотрела до конца .Спасибо !
The best Romeo & Juliet ever! I remember watching them during my high school! I never knew she was with the same age with my mother (RIP mother). So this is how they look now! They're already in their senior age but they aged elegantly, especially Olivia Hussey. @BFI, thank you so much for this video!
51 years after.. it is great to see them again. Thank you for sharing this interview. They will forever stay young immotalized in the making of Romeo and Juliet. The icon of the time. The most beautiful filmed movie ever, the story, the costumes.. simply beautiful. i do not tire watching it again and again...
This was a great interview. I truly enjoyed the friendly banter and the mutual love, admiration and respect these two performers have for one another after all of these years.
It really warms my heart to see them together in this interview. Zeffirelli’s Romeo and Juliet is as full of passion and beauty today as it were when it first premiered.
Watched a video of them being interviewed when they were younger. They just kept looking back and forth at each other and they're doing the exact same thing here. 💜💜
Watching this beautiful movie in my high-school freshman english class circa 1982 and I was absolutely smitten with Leonard! Be still my beating heart...💓
What an amazing interview. I am mesmerized by what they can remember so long ago at the age of 16! I can’t remember thing about when I was 16 but I’m sure such an incredible experience as what they had helps them to remember these details. Leonard is clearly still madly in love with her! What a charming beautiful man he is and I so agree with his comment about his hope that we focus more on decency and love today as they once did.
Just watched their 1967 interview... Olivia still looks at Leonard as he speaks with the same intensity, and he still speaks of her as if she is ever his. They're beautiful, they made Romeo and Juliet their own.

🥰🥰🥰🥰
Lover
This movie was so important in my teenage. I was 14 years old and loved it. Thirty years later, I showed it to my students. They loved it!
me too …🥰🥰🥰
I love these two. I do think they look wonderful together. The best ever Romeo and Juliet.
The fact that there hasn't been a serious challenge to this version speaks volumes. No one can compete with a masterpiece 💯💯❤
Baz Lurhmann's adaptation was good.
@@forsakenjones4695😅😅😅😅it was camp!
A Masterpiece made by these beautiful actors...❤❤
It still feels like they're a legit couple. My heart is just bursting!

And now Franco has passed away. As far as I’m concerned, he made the best adaptation of Shakespeare’s tragedy of star crossed lovers.
Agree
Yes...and chose HER of all women&actresses of the world to play the role of Mother of God.. And not every female can be chosen to play it.. Great Zefirelli..rest in peace and stay in glory..
He was a kiddie fiddler
olivias laugh makes me smile. she sounds just as she did at age 15. what a great movie. these two had great chemistry
This is rather lovely, seeing them together 50+ years later, like the alternate ending we all hoped for R&J. They are still really beautiful, both of them!!!
Closest of friends for 54 years; they communicate at least every 10 days with one another. So much history they share.
So true. If R and J had lived, they would look like these two. And if we use these two actors as fantasy stand ins for the characters, we can see from how the actors talk here, they still seem to dig each other. So J & R would still having a loving happy flirty marriage into old age..
Спустя столько лет, оба красавчики. Бесконечное уважение этой прекрасной паре!!!
Сколько обаяния и искренности. Как только можно их не любить.
И помогают друг другу.
True beauty never dies..Leonard and Olivia are as beautiful now, as they were 53 years ago.. ;-)
I've always loved her laugh❤️...This version of Romeo and Juliet is, was and will always be my favorite one.
How lovely to see them together again. They both look wonderful. Without a doubt, the best “Romeo and Juliet” I’ve ever seen. That movie made me realize that Shakespeare could be more accessible and not just something tedious you learned in school.
Their chemistry is impeccable. I could watch them speak for hours.
Their Romeo and Juliet was phenomenal. It brought to life the stunning beauty of Shakespeare.
Leonard's laugh is so hearty, I can't help but laugh with him.
Leonard Whiting still has game. Love this man.
I thought it was so nice of them to pay tribute not only to Franco, but to many other crew members, that are usually left in the shadow. The way it came naturally, speaks a lot of them both, too.
Why are the camera angles so terrible? Lol.
@@mylillambs No crane to raise the cameras.
I actually like it
Probably due to the theatre space. Possibly these aisle areas were the only proper areas for the camera
No Franco
Aha hahaha I'm dying that was so funny I'm laughing so hard 😐
Thanks to this production of Romeo and Juliet thousands of my 9th grade English students fell in love with Shakespeare. There has never been a more enjoyable creation of these two young lovers.
So happy they’re alive and older. They look great. Leonard was such a stud. Olivia looks gorgeous
I love them. Leonard still loves Olivia a bit doesn't he?
@@Helga7850 If I'd been Leonard, I'd have married her during the film.
We all do😘😘😘.
Robin Jackson she was 15
She was so beautiful then and still is.
Helga Haper well she’s not a lesbian. She was only 15.
Olivia just radiates pure perfection. She’s so beautiful inside and out.

Leonard's patient relaxed vibe is feels the same but he's more talkative now I think wich is good to see ^^ And how they compliment eachother omg 🥺 Such a beautiful chemistry even after 50 years ❤
I hope I can have this kind of connection with somebody one day that will last until our old days at least.
She is adorable. He is still handsome .

I love how she still has her girly giggle.

What a true delight to see them again after all these years! Romeo and Juliet is my favorite movie of all time! Love you Both!
The ending of this movie always make me cry no matter how many times I rewatch it !
That was very moving that part, beautifully filmed. Miles better than the Leonardo one, he's too much of a cry baby
Still beautiful, still handsome, still the best Romero and Juliet, ever!
yesssss
I saw this movie when a teen & thought my heart would burst looking at the beauty of these two! I’d never seen such beauty before.
I was 13 when this movie came out and I thought it was the most romantic thing I'd ever seen. No VCRs back then, so I bought the soundtrack and listened to it so much that I, to this day, still have much of the play memorized. All of my girlfriends and myself were in love with Leonard Whiting.
I still have an 8 track tape with the theme song. The movie and song were wonderful.
I did exactly the same! :-)

I was lucky enough to see this on the big screen when I was 12.the most beautiful movie ever made.ive never seen anything like that movie since.thank you for making it!!!
Wowww! Lucky you! I am 27 and I wish I saw it on the big screen :(
I was so lucky to have seen this movie, as I was close in age to Juliet (actually Olivia’s age). It is one of the most of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen! I even bought the theme music to play - piano arrangement. There were no video copies to play on videocassette, but the film had a huge impact on popular culture. ❤️
Me, too!
I was 15 when this came out and it was HUGE like Titantic was years later. A young girl's dream.
She’s still so gorgeous and has such a young spirit- that’s what I want when I’m her age !
I have loved these actors my entire life since I was 14. In 1968 ! It remains the best movie that I have ever seen beautiful people wonderful acting. Thank you for changing my life
I was at this event. Beautiful a very magical evening
She calls on me briefly (17:34 min). Very excited and rather honored.
Gorgeous so she is!

Hello Kat. This was in December 2016 in Santa Monica, California at the Aerotheatre. Will let you know what is next. Olivia already had a public signing of her book on 31 July 2018 in Los Angeles.
Ciro Morales TY! Sorry I missed it! ☹️ Hopefully I’ll be at the next event.
ciro! i remember you from her facebook page. you and her have such a sweet bond :)
Fun to see them together. They probably have been friends for years. They are still young enough. I wish them the best.
definitedoll they’re in their 70’s

Makes you wish they'd end up together. Lol probably in an alternate dimension

Honestly yes the Best Romeo and Juliet Movie !!!💛💛
The very best version of Romeo & Juliet ever! Beautiful, magic, plastic, artistic!...
I love how they endearingly complement each other. So sweet.♥️
The best Romeo & Juliet ever! I remember watching them during my high school! I never knew she was with the same age with my mother (RIP mother). So this is how they look now! They're already in their senior age but they aged elegantly, especially Olivia Hussey. @BFI, thank you so much for this video!
Love how they remained close. They text each other like once every ten days!
А там ..........страсть
Olivia and Leonard in my eyes remain as the most beautiful and classiest of actors i have ever seen.
Not classy at all to sue the studio that made you a star.
I like to imagine Romeo got there just a few minutes later, Juliet was alive and now they’re touring talking about their love story 😂😍
Обалдеть!!!!!!!!
Much better ending than Shakespeare’s!
I always know her by her _voice!_ The way she laughs, and cries!
*I always thought she was so beautiful! She even looks great now! & the man who played Romeo looked like Zac Efron when he was younger!*
