  • An 18-year-old man was arrested after an early morning chase that led police through three counties. Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) Trooper Michael Shuler said he clocked a Jeep going 113mph on I-75 near State Route 63 around 12:20 a.m. Tuesday. Shuler said the driver, Edward Mumphery Jr., refused to stop when he tried to pull him over. OSHP said the chase went through Warren, Butler, and Hamilton counties before ending in Avondale.

      They have different rules for PIT. Most states consider it a use of lethal force - because it is. Some states don't let cops attempt to murder people just for driving away from a ticket.

      @andrewhigdon8346 Год назад

      @@draintheswamp1588 that’s not what was implied. There is a massive grey area in between the two assertions. One infers that people should not die for a traffic ticket, the other that people should be allowed to die if need be for driving at high speeds “through the city”. Your assertion that people should be allowed to die as a collateral damage consequence of such dangerous actions. That puts you square in the realms of an authoritarian regime. Even people who have actually murdered others in a premeditated manner are given the right to due-process, a trait of civilized society somewhat removed from authoritarian regimes. Your assertion , by your own words, is that anyone who risks the lives of others deserves to die in such a collateral damage manner. Welcome to America. Here we allow due process. The reasoning for such is varied and far ranging, the stuff of the high-minded and selfless of a great and progressive society. On the other side of the spectrum, those who commit legal offenses must be held accountable for their actions, but the ends must justify the means. If people are going to run, they will regardless of the actions of law enforcement. The risk of endangering the public escalates dramatically during a chase. This is not to say that the suspect wouldn’t do the same without the chase, but the odds increase dramatically. The instances of a suspect driving in this manner BEFORE law enforcement interaction are so seldom that NOT chasing increases the safety of the public incredibly. With some type of rough identification acquired, the odds of the suspects being apprehended soon enough to find justice while massively reducing the risk to public safety is extremely high. Even with a stolen vehicle, the association of the suspect with that vehicle is invariably found with hard evidence and Justice is served. During a high speed chase, the risk to the welfare of the public, as well as the LEO, is extremely high, and far more innocent lives are lost in the process of such chases than during the process of alternative enforcement. If the suspects fully evade justice, what is the net result? Less risk to the public by far. The instances of such suspects injuring or killing innocent victims AND evading justice are slim to nonexistent. Net result? These chases are indeed entertaining but at the expense of your safety and mine. Will this send a message to criminals that running is the best thing and that they will get away with crimes if they run? Sure, let that be the message to them. They can be self-deceived all they want. We’re you in the same position, what would you do, increase the risk to your fellow citizens dramatically or simply gather evidence to the best of your ability and detain the suspects at a later date? Choosing the ego stroking method of a police chase possibly making you a momentary “hero” is just that, ego stroking.

      In Ohio PIT Manuevers are legal but typically they would do the moving roadblock first as the attempts before they decide the PIT is appropriate with the supervisors approval. I believe Pennslyvania has the similar rules too.
      New York however the PIT is illegal because back in December 2020 a trooper got arrested for ramming his patrol car causing the 11 year old in a passager or back seat losing her life. The trooper got charged with 2nd degree murder. And it was also not the troopers first time in trouble ramming his car.

      Basically just move over as soon as it's safe to do so, don't reduce your speed if you can speed up to pass the car in the next lane. If on an exit ramp just go through the light carefully. To be honest, the best thing is to be aware of your surroundings. That way, you see the Trooper coming, and you have plenty of time to move over
