@@keealex4027 ‘1993 actually. This was before they animated everything because they were still developing the storyline. It was screened on Black Friday ‘93 and Disney and Pixar HATED it. (Hence why it’s also referred as “The Black Friday Reel”)

That’s what story revisions are for. They’re unspoken life-savers for any script to succeed when they’re done right. I could name a lot of films, shows, comics, games and so forth out now where further revisions could have salvaged them from absolute hot garbage into something serviceable or something phenomenal. You could probably a few offhand right now. Had they not retooled this one after that initial screening and went ahead with the project: it would probably have gotten negative reviews from critics assuming what’s shown to the public is what we were going to get with this project and the audience’s response to this film would probably be the dreaded words while forced to follow this version of Woody; “I don’t care what happens to this guy” like they’re watching the Riot Club. At worst, it would probably be a forgotten failure. At best, it would probably be the subject of pretentious essayists who proclaims the “smartness” of this Toy Story and how we’re schmucks for not “getting it” or whatever buzzwords they’d throw out. Fans of 2D animation would probably be better off from Toy Story’s failure, probably be another dent on Tom Hank’s creditably after that Bonfire of the Versailles flop if they got him signed on for the project and we’d be spared of Lightyear.
Them toning down the coldness in Woody and making what he did to Buzz into an act of jealousy that he later resolved really was the move that saved this movie
@@summermelody7942 Intent is the keyword. If you frame an incident as something a character unwittingly causes, it’s easier to be on their side than if they were doing it deliberately.

This was for the original direct to video version and would’ve happened when the two Buzzs met. However Zerg and Buzz #2 only had this one scene because after Zerg flees, Buzz #2 gives him the utility belt as he thinks he’s superior for defeating Zerg.
@@PikachuFan-yw6vpI don’t think it’s very reasonable to say that the very first version of a character is “not him”. There wasn’t any other version of Woody for them to compare to, so while it may not be a very appealing incarnation, it isn’t exactly an unfaithful one.

10:50 The crossing the road scene from Toy Story 2 was memorable, but quite interesting in its original animation and background music. Granted, it looks much the same as in the final film, at least in terms of the shots of the toys under the traffic cones, and the cars that swerve around (especially that semi truck which has the pipe fall off the trailer and nearly crush Mr. Potato Head, which then takes the gum Potato Head was stuck to). Then, the power pole toppling over was interesting to see instead of the light pole.
Yo! Mr.Potaohead and Piggybank are the real heros here. It's nice that we got to see this. To me its another movie just not finished or colored but thats fine. What we have feels like a little small short movie. I can see they wanted to have a looney toons feel with being a jerk type charater but it came off as really messed up and showing a toy going completely crazy. When he was in the bed with Andy and Buzz that should have told him he is equal to Buzz as Andy's favorite toy but he just wanted Andy to himself. Most likely Woody was always like this ,looking down at all the toys and ordering them around.
I find it so interesting that with the black Friday reel, they were gonna make woody like an actual bad guy until last changes. Thank god they did that
Pretty cool to see alternate concepts/takes on how certain scenes would've originally played out. I'm also surprised that some survived from Toy Story 2 despite the development hell that one went through.
I swear that last one is in the movie I vividly remember the gum scene with Mr potato head, rex saying “oh well we tried”, the concrete pipe. I’m not sure it’s a deleted scene or if there was ever a special edition of Toy Story two it might have been added back in
This has, "This wasn't supposed to be a kids movie," vibe. Not only in dialogue, but in it's delivery. A lot less cartoonish. And while I will always cherish Toy Story for the way it is, it would be interesting to see a version that wasn't necessarily supposed to be a family film.
