Alignment is a descriptor of actions, in my games. Not a "you must do this" but a "this character has these tendencies". If long term encounters are within the campaign, it can also drift, as their tendencies drift.
More of a "how people who know of these acts will see you" thing.
Although I admit, some items of artifact or very rare level can only be used by those of the epitome of the alignment charts. this is *mostly* to limit their use to unique npc's ...though a player could certainly earn the use "unlock" through excellent long term roleplay of their decisions.

As someone that got into this hobby via Pathfinder 1, my argument for alignment is that clerics and other divine classes don't feel right without the ability to bring forth holy energy that is harmless to the virtuous, harmful to the wicked, and devastating to fiends. Vice versa for the evil versions of those classes. That said classes and abilities that aren't divine in nature shouldn't be tied to the mechanic.
Also the Law/Chaos part of alignment brings a nice bit of spice when it comes to differentiating the different types of celestials and fiends. Especially the latter.

I've really changed my mind on this, I vacillated from superfluous game mechanic to it's actually quite useful. Pathfinder removed alignment from their remaster version. I still ask players "alignment has been removed from the game but if you were to select one which one do you think your character matches?"

I think its a useful tool for those who actually want to roleplay.

I stopped using PC alignment, due to the issues I've had over the years with players and the gm not being on the same page, as far as alignment goes, sprinkled with a lot of meta-gaming. I think Palladium's alignment system is much more understandable than the AD&D version and I used that for awhile.

I still have players pick it as a general world view. But it's used basically as I describe it in this video

Other player kills in the most brutal ways and adorns her equipment with body parts of sentient beings > enters into a relationship with Titivilus > dies and is raised as a devil > marries Titivilus > starts making soul contracts.

I remember Matt Colville saying that alignment in the old days was essentially that character or cultures religion. Like how in America we believe in freedom and you should be free to do what you want, but in Asian cultures it’s all about tradition and serving your family.

I have always thought of it as cultural. An orc may see evil in compassion or weakness. An illithid may see evil in stupidity or emotion. Its all relative which i find fascinating.

The thing to keep in mind is that alignment is all relative to our real world morals. I think we should keep alignment in the game but the system is so maligmed
