Dateline NBC on Christopher Reeve (June 1995)

- Dateline NBC segment that originally aired in June 1995 about the condition of actor Christopher Reeve. On May 27, 1995, Reeve was thrown from his horse, which caused an injury resulting in paralysis.
I wish they had the technology to fix his injury back then. R.I.P. Reeve
even now, we don't have any technology that can fix his back, it's not his back actually it's because of the level of his SCI.
Do they have that technology today?
He inspired me to emulate his character as much as I humanly could after continuously watching superman 1 and 2. His humble nature is really what made him the perfect superman that's has yet to be equaled by these newer wanna be superman actors that never quite make the cut
+Jae Em Cabacungan your body could not help and impossible to recover
At least the new superman is more convincing in terms of fighting
He was such a beautiful man, He was so talented, yet just one fall on his neck changed his life and then 9 years after he died. Tragedy.
I once fell from a horse, supposedly it was a common fall and a minor back injury, still I couldn’t neither jump nor run for days. I just can’t imagine going through an accident like Christoper’s.
He died in 2004
@@matthewskudzienski888 that's what he said...The accident was in 95' and he died in 04'. "9 years later" pal
This is what humans get for calling this horrible act of animal exploitation a sport

What makes this so tragic for me, is that Christopher Reeve was literally living the dream prior to his accident. He flew planes, he sailed boats, he was the quintessential "man" by every measure. Did I forget to mention he was an actor too? He wasn't just some couch potato who drank himself into oblivion every day like many people do. He lived life on the edge. He was a risk taker and for the most part those risks were very rewarding. Christopher Reeve will always be my personal hero. I hope some day I can accomplish half of the things he did in his lifetime.
Not saying anyone deserves it, but it wasn't arbitrary, he got injured doing one of those extreme activities.
Kevin Arco I know what you mean, he is a personal hero to me too. I hated that he was so close to walking again but politicians prevented it from happening due to religious beliefs.
Yah!

Kevin Arco Superman both off screen and onscreen. RIP Mr Reeve.
They should make a biopic about him. He deserves one

Remember when Dateline had topics like this and not just murder mysteries like they do now? I miss the '90s…
Gedaman me too.
I agree
I'm going to be honest, I always thought dateline was a A&E sexy murder show.
I really enjoyed listening to his audio book. He seemed to be such an intelligent, compassionate person. It's a shame he died so young.
He didn’t die young he was just paralyzed
@@lux4416 he was 52 when he passed, which is far younger than he likely would have passed were he not paralyzed. His children were still young. 52 is middle-aged, not old.
One real superman indeed!
This was one reason he never performed with Lynda Carter. His fame and her fame were rising at the time during the late 1970s. They will always be known for their roles of DC comic book superheroes. Thankfully Henry Cavill and Gal Gadot ("goll guh-dote") are taking over these two roles.
*EXACTLY !*
I''m glad we did finally get a Wonder Woman movie. I loved Christopher Reeve. I still miss him to this day. And now I miss Margot Kidder. Long live the legends.

A Beverly agreed, but Cavill SUCKS!
That was very unfortunate I wish Chris R could still be with us and in good health

Awww so sad... he's such a humble guy the best superman ever
Dec 19 2001' i had a highschool wrestling accident where i broke C5 and bruised my spinal cord, I did thereapy for many years an got lil movement back. i can remember laying in bed and reading all about Chris, he had helped me alot just to get over the first part of realizing things from that point on is gonna be very different
My mom and I were near DC when Reeve had his accident visiting my sister for mom's birthday. We spent the weekend following the story that was on all the news as Culpepper and the hospital wasn't far away. A couple of years later mom bought his book and sent it to me after she read it. In August 2001mom was visiting my sister's who now lived in Boulder CO and stood on a bed in the middle of the night to turn on a ceiling fan, lost her balance and fell, hitting her neck on a dresser. She became a C-3,4,5 incomplete quad. It was Reeve's book that was a starting point in looking for help from the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation and their guidance for the next 14 years along with others. The progress that's been made since is astonishing.
I'm pleased you are still here. Mom died in 2017 at the age of 85. She knew what was ahead once she realized she was paralyzed and she never recovered mentally or emotionally. She said she wished she hadn't tried to get help that night. It's not easy to adjust to such a drastic change in life.
I know someone who had a spinal cord injury while wrestling back in the '90s and he is still paralyzed from the neck down.
Poor Christopher Reeve. That man went through hell. Hell on Earth. But, I'm so glad to know that he will walk again and be better than ever in the future resurrection! In the Paradise of God!
Well, he ain't moved yet.
please spare us the religious bullshit
will fly instead
ChessArmyCommander mmmmm you hope anyway
ChessArmyCommander well you know he died right but I know what you mean
The reason why Christopher suffered that injury to his cervical neck area was both his hands were tangled up in the reins so as a normal reflex a person does if falling to the ground is to put their arms in front to break their fall, Christopher couldn't and landed head first causing the serious cervical neck injury. It was quite hard to hear this when it happened and what he went through subsequently and his wife passing soon after Chris.
Very true. My skateboard's front wheels came off while I was flying down a steep hill. Reflex made me put my arms in front, resulting in one broken arm and one healthy spine.
thanks for this bit of info on his fall. I have been riding since childhood and have had some very dangerous moments. Yet anything can happen to any of us no matter if we participate in sports or sit in a natural hot spring and get a virus that kills us. Just grateful for this moment and grateful for Christopher Reeve's being and of his character. What a Beautiful soul, always will be deeply missed.
That's crazy how it happened
His accident happened in my hometown of Culpeper, VA. Such a tragic event that happened to him
Thanks for the video. First time seeing this
My favorite superman of all time R.I.P Christopher Reeve you will always be the best superman 😔
I feel so grateful as an equestrian myself hat the many falls i have had havent resulted inthe serius injury & death that happened to the late great christopher reeve
sjoanne brown. Notice how they were holding the horse's raines WAY too tightly? Let them loose, lean forward but not too far, like you become one with the horse & biggest thing.... TRUST THE HORSE!!
The horse is jumping, you aren't. If you fall let go of the raines.
I'm so glad you haven't been hurt & I hope it stays that way.
Before I ride I always walk beside my horse & softly talk to him or her & make sure the animal is well fed & watered & I bring apples or suger. There have been times I'd just walk in the fenced in grass yard & sit under a tree & let the horse have a breather awhile.
I like the horse to be my friend & visa versa, I don't treat it like a car. Native Americans taught me how to be with horses & the horses are the ones whove5really taught me how to ride.
Nice to meet another person who loves horses.
@@ghostcityshelton9378
I agree. You are a nice person who love animal
The first time I went horseback riding I was so nervous I gripped the reins so tightly because I was so scared about being thrown off. Not sure if I will do that again after watching his story.
RIP Christopher Reeve. Please don't feel offended that I enjoy th out of "Brand New Dance" by Slim Shady.
Man I wish I could have gone back in time and warned him. He was one of my favorite childhood actors.
I hate to say this but he was warned. I rode at the 2nd to last barn he was riding out of and he was warned that he was pushing himself and his horse to do things that neither were ready for. Nobody wanted to work with him there, or be in the ring when he was riding because he was in general not being safe and refused to listen.
So even if you went back, you'd just be another voice telling him to stop and slow down, and he probably would have ignored you.
He was my favorite Superman 💔😩 I cant believe it’s been 9 years and I can’t believe just one accident changed his life

It would have been an honor to have met Christopher Reeve.
Equestrian falls can be tragic. Reeve's horse stopped right before the jump but the competition wasn't gates but solid clay walls and he was catapulted into it headfirst creating a type of contusion.
I have a false memory that he was able to walk again before he died, but I've since learned it was a commercial I must have seen when I was half asleep.

We are around the same age then
As a Muslim, one thing I like about Christopher Reeve is that he was always humble and never give up no matter what. I hope one day I'll be like him.
Whats being muslim got anything to do with that
Why are u mentioning ur religion
@@swapsakpal08 he can mention his religion if he wants, what's your problem with that?
You need to be a human being 1st, religion is a choice 😊
I remember when this happened. It was tragic and may or may not have been prevented. You don't know if it was a rider error or not. There are risks in pretty much everything that you do. You can get in your car and get hit and killed by a drunk driver. You can be walking crossing a road and get hit and killed by someone that is not paying attention. I ride myself but do not jump. There are all levels of risk when riding horses. Jockeys take a risk everytime they race. Eventers-cross-country take a high risk. There are different levels. Christopher Reeve was an amateur but it can happen to all levels of riders. The bone-head reporter asks such a stupid question to Mr Mann. You mean this could happen to you????? an Olympic rider????? You can get hurt riding a bicycle. Even though Mr. Reeve was hurt badly and left him wheelchair bound, he did have the money and family support that gave him the ability to share his story and establish his foundation for stem cell research. He was well loved by many and his memory lives on.
His good friend "Robin Williams" paid for most all of his medical bills!

what a shame! Christopher was a great actor and a wonderful man. I love riding horses too but am sometimes skeptical because I already have spinal subluxation so when I ride I end up having to use a cane to walk until I am able to make it to the chiropractor and I have just turned 25. Horses are fun but so unpredictable. I wish Superman was still here though 😔😢😭
Nikki N humans are unpredictable to
Yes, I am very "skeptical" of "subluxations."
Thanks for putting your advertisement for Chiropractors on a tribute video for Christopher Reeves. I see countless of these type of nonsense comments on chiropractic videos.
"Why the world doesn't need Superman." - Lois Lane, 2006.
In his film "Somewhere in time" there are many scenes with horses (in one the horse start to walk before the time, and he says "wait for me", in another he is tied, so he can't move in a barn with horses). At the end of the film he is carried by two men, and he looks like a paralytic.
Shortly before the accident he made a film where he is a wheelchair user.
Of course many will say: just coincidences.
so sad I'm crying
They seriously need to do a better job of securing their riders so that accidents like this don't happen. Even if they can't make it so their riders aren't firmly on the backs of their horses, they will at least be able to avoid suffering any permanent injuries.
I dont think that is possible. Jumping at this level requires so much movement from the rider. You can't be strapped down on the saddle otherwise you would be dead weight to the horse. This would actually make it far harder not only on the horse but also the rider. I would imagine it could also result in even worse accidents, since you wouldn't be able to have a chance to fall cleanly. It could also actually result in spinal bruising for both the horse and the rider. When you ride a horse at anything more than a walk you are not really "sitting" on the horse but rather elevating off the horse in time with their movement so your butt doesn't get pounded from the saddle by the movement of the horse. Which is why you need to grip stongly with your thighs to stay on a horse. (There is far more to it, but that is a very rough understanding). A seatbelt would hinder that movement and cause spinal discomfort for you and the horse. There are actually seatbelt designs out there for saddles. But the ones I have seen have been for trail riding on western saddles. Which is a completely different type of riding and saddle than show jumping. They only walk their horses, most of the time, on trails.
@@sophiaschommer7337 That sucks. I was hoping there would be a way. Though I was kinda having doubts about my own words.
Its a cruel sport, for the horses. They fracture bones, often, and have to be euthanasied. Now if Mr.Reeve were a Vegan,he would still be alive.People get off your high horse,or that horse is gonna break your necks.
I just knew horse riding is dangerous
Riding a car is also dangerous. So is flying in a airplane, crossing the road, taking an elevator, doing chores in your home... Can go on and on.
.... I hope you get my point.
Just sad when had Not only paralyzed Chris from the horse accident that should not happened but became as sentence in handicap🧑🏻🦼 he had went thru his entirely life… til his breathin stops💔😞 and was close about to walk again🦵🏻🦵🏻 but instead is free from spinal cord suffering now into the clouds 🦽🦸🏻♂⛅ 😇RIP Chris Superman legend is missed👍

Gave me shivers ! How sad !
Poor poor Mr. Reeve. So tragic. My greatest fear is falling and sustaining a spinal cord injury. The lady at minute 1:45 is so matter of fact. I ride and yes I am scared of falling. I think most begginers are. I haven't yet, I know it will happen sooner or later and I just hope it will never be my last either.
Now I know what Vinnie Paz from the group Jedi Mind Tricks means when he said, "I break backs like Superman on horses!"
I had to search that line to understand it, because I usually get it right away.
Such a handsome man
He made people believe a man can fly. Goodbye, man of steel.
I feel awful for him, but that's what happens when you make horses do ridiculous unnatural things over and over again. horses aren't meant to jump, especially jumps that high. And with the horse racing bit, I'm not surprised. It's a ridiculously dangerous sport for both horse and rider, but mostly the poor horse. I ride horses, but I genuinely think a majority of equestrian sports are terrible and highly dangerous for people and horses.
You're 100% right!
Yes I hate sports that involve animals, it’s just too dangerous and unpredictable. Nevertheless, I do feel so bad for Christopher, being paralysed from the neck down seems hell.
Now Nicki 🤦🏾♂️
I fell on my back once falling down the stairs. It hurt like shit, but nothing like his injury.

Really sad very unfortunate.....The best Superman ever
How come they never showed his accident?
They had decency back then, I guess. In that context.
Would you really want to see someone being dragged by a horse and then flipped over a fence and then watch as their spinal cord get's broken? I don't think many people would.
I sure wouldn't. That would be like total torture to watch.
Because there is no video of it.
