This video proved the skills and knowledge to encourage me to remodel my closet. Ugly wire racks put in by previous homeowner fell out of the wall.. not one bracket was secured into wall studs... I gut the closet and did board and Bataan design.. I use wooden dowels to hold hanging clothing... built shelf to hold shoes.. I am beyond happy with results.. btw, I am in my sixties and used table saw, hammer drill, and level... now off to my next closet project.
Wow Cheryl that was such an amazing comment thank you for that. That’s exactly why we make these videos we are so happy we could be of help to you so awesome thank you again for sharing that amazing comment and supporting our channel😎👍🏻🔨
After 30 some odd years in the construction business you get where you can make just about anything. Sometimes this means you do things more elaborate than really is needed. I was looking at videos wasting some time when I ran across yours. I really like the Simplicity of your closet shelves and your videos was clean and professional as well. Just thought I would chime in and let you know that I enjoyed it.
Just bought my first house and it has little closet space going to take one of the rooms and make it my walk-in! This was by far the best video I watched! Thanks for the great info and direction!
With your video I did our closet organizer today. Thank you, your video helped me a tremendous amount. 13 feet long, 8 feet high, shelves on both sides. I had no idea but was able to buy the right stuff, and install it adequately using your video. It’s not as good as you do but we are very happy. Thank you.
This is awesome. Finally, someone who makes things with Hand power tools. This way we don't have to invest $100,000 in tools like those guys who mean well, but try to make the video look like DIY. Thank you for the video. 5:47
Great video. Thank you. If you were to stain the wood, would you stain it in place after installation? Or build id and then dismantle it to stain? Thanks again.
Very neat and well explained. I'm trying to decide between lam wood or that wire shelf system.. Little window in that closet is real nice. Little natural light goes a long ways.
We like the wood system. There are some really awesome closet systems you can get with so many options. All good depends on your needs. Ya we love the natural light in the closet it is really nice. Thanks for the comment 👍🏻😎🔨
@@co-know-proconstructiontips One last question. I am just about to start. What height did you use for ledger line. I am trying to determine my shelf height. Your videos are great by the way. Thanks.
@@johnathanasoulias5347 the ledger is about 69 inches off finish floor that would be to the bottom of your shelf. keep in mind the ceilings on this build or about 102 inches little over 8 feet tall so if you have a lower ceiling, you might want to bring your ledger down depending on what you’re putting up on the shelf. Hope that helps 👍😎
What I did is I coped the end of the dowel that attaches to the support on either side. Then I drilled a pilot hole and countersunk 3-1/2 screws from the supporting Dowels on each side also used glue. I hope that helps I did not film a video doing that maybe I will next time. Thanks for the comment. 😎🔨
So glad it was helpful to you. The closet is 6‘6“ wide by 12 foot long. So after the shelves are installed I had a little over 4 feet in the middle. Thanks for the comment support hope that helps. 👍🏻😎🔨
great video and this is exactly what i a looking for. My question is how much material do i need , how do i figure that out, i get confused with corners ....I have a rectangular walk in closet, 146.5 inches by 79 wide. What material do i need for one shelf on the 146.5 wall. Can you share with me dimensions on wood and nail sizes... Appreciate your work!
Thank you for that comment. Definitely you will need a minimum 12 foot one by 12 Douglas fir or pine. You will also need one by three by approximately 16 foot for your ledger. Then you’ll need approximately three closet brackets. Then you will also need one bag of closet hardware for the Rod to sit in on walls. Then you will need 2 1/2 inch Brad nails 15 gauge. You will also need a 15 gauge Brad nail gun. You can use a smaller gauge nail if you use screws after you nail it together. If so use at least 2 1/2 inch screws. You will also need a 12 foot wood rod or dowel. That is about all you need plus the tools to build it then primer and paint hope that helps. Happy new year 🎆
Great presentation. Your approach is much appreciated. 1 suggestion, wear safety glasses... you only have one set of eyes, protect them... you never know when a splinter of a drill bit snap can bland you...
i do have a question for ya but great video! really like this closet re-do. my question is what is the purpose of the short 1x3 pieces you under nailed to the shelf for (the ones with the 45 degree reveal cut into the inboard end)? initially i thought they were for spacing down the support bracket for the dowels you used for the rod and still gave support to the shelf but that's not what i saw in the end.
Great question Sean👍🏻 The one by three with the 45 on the edge is where I spliced my shelves together that is were each shelf butts into the next shelf. I nail those underneath each seem to give additional support. Thanks for the question🔨👍🏻😎
Hey man great video. Thanks for this. I don't understand though how you notched the dowl for the back wall into the left and right dowl? What sort of cut did you make into the left and right dowl to receive the back wall dowl so cleanly?
Thanks man. I laid the smaller Dowel down on the ground then I brought a small piece of cut dowel up to the edge of it and placed it on the side of the Dowel and I scribed the angle of the side down onto the middle dowel. Then I used a hand hacksaw to cut out that radius. Once I have the radius on each end of the Dowel placed it next to the right and left dowel and then countersunk from the backside of the right and left dowels and I installed a 3 1/2 inch deck rated screw. When cutting that radius it’s on the end cut so you want to lock it into a clamp make sure it’s really secure then cut that radius. I hope that makes sense maybe I’ll do a short video on it thanks for watching and the comment. 👍🏻😎🔨
@@co-know-proconstructiontips Ok so what's the secret to getting the wood joints nice tight? Im building the closet now. I'm finding that cutting the shelves to 90 degrees doesnt fit nice and tight. There are gaps at the corners of the walls. I went and bought an angle finder which helps but its still not perfect. What's your process for getting the perfect cut?
Well there’s a couple different tricks you can do. You can measure the gap thickness at its widest point and then go to the opposite side of your board and measure the thickness mark a line then go to zero on your cut should find the angle. Try it with the smaller piece of wood first find your angle then transfer that to your finish board so you don’t make the wrong cut on your finish piece. Let me know if that helps. 👍🏻😎🔨
so 4 months later I come back to this video! Question...I couldn't tell or read the brand of your stud finder. Could you please tell me? I bought a fancy Zircon one and even though I calibrate it, it sucks. I'm trusting you on this. Thx!
You can purchase a high powered magnet and use it to find the screws in the studs on your wall that is the best stud finder. The one I show in the video is just a magnet stud finder the brand name is C.H. Hansen company. You can get a magnet from a hardware store. It will work if you have standard drywall. If You have lath and plaster stud finder‘s typically don’t work. Thanks for watching 🔨👍🏻
Awesome! thank you and glad you like it. Yes it’s a 1 x 3 with the corners cut off at a 45° angle to give character. Let us know if you have any other questions. Thanks for watching👍😎
Hey brother. Great video. Doing a pantry this week, same idea. Do you think you need the brackets for weight support or would the leger board be enough?
Great question 16 gauge is good you can reinforce with some screws after you’re done with the build as well. The face screen molding on the front of the 1x12 shelving we used a 18 gauge with three-quarter inch brass nails and glue. 16 16 gauge might split that peace. You don’t have to install the face screen molding it’s just to give the one by 12 a nicer edge. You can buy some 1 inch finish nails and hand drive them into the face of the screen molding may need to pilot with a little drill bit. Other than that you should be good to go with the 16 gauge gun. Thanks for watching and the comet let us know if you need anything else
I got the 18 gauge nails and gun. Just the big gun only goes to 16 gauge. Just wanted to make sure that if I use 16 gauge for the 15 gauge you used in the video would be ok as well.
Definitely will work like I say may have to countersink a few screws next to some of the 16 gauge nails you install but should hold really good. Thanks for watching
I've been searching all of RUclips and I cannot figure how you support your back peice shelf that goes between the two longer wall shelves at approximately 5:56 can you enlightening me?
Basically the shelving attaches to that back ledger on the back wall which gives it most of the support as well as it attaches to the two side shelves by toenailing with a 15 gauge nail gun through the face of the shelf into the shelf adjoining it on each side. That is a good strong connection once painted should last a long time. But if not you can add a piece of wood below the seam a one by to keep the joints secure. As well are brackets that support our shelves and our dowels are pretty close at that back wall which gives a lot of support to that part of the shelf as well. You can as well put one of the closet brackets in the center of that back shelf against the back wall that will support the shelf and the dowel on that back wall really well and you can put a lot of weight on it. We hope that helps you get a better picture of that work. Thanks for watching check out some of our other videos we have a lot of awesome content don’t forget to subscribe and like have a good one. 👍😎
Thanks James, I left the brackets on well i panted. What i do is i keep a damp rag in my pocket so if i get some pant on the bracket i wipe it off and good to go.. Good question have a good one :-}
At 5:30ish minutes, what exactly are you using to nail down the shelves on top of the support ledger/brackets? You mention in the video that you're "tacking it all in." What are you using to do just that?
is all the weight of the clothing on the hangars supported by those metal brackets? I can't have my rods supported by any walls. I wasn't sure if that would be possible but maybe it is. nvm saw how it is supported by brackets in the back. Can I do this without having a bracket to the wall? Just those metal holders and wood shelving screwed into studs?
Great question! You don’t need the Hardware with the pole just get standard angle brackets or you can make your own supports out of wood with a 45° angle going back to wall. Again great question and thank you for watching👍😎🔨
Great question! I personally wouldn’t attach this wood shelf system to a concrete wall I would get a steel system. You can attach it to a concrete wall if you’d like but you want to make sure the wall is sealed first so no moisture Fenwick through the concrete to your shelf system. As well I recommend using pre-primed product or treated product if it’s going up against any kind of cement or concrete. If it’s just a brick wall that gets painted, then you can install anchors to attach the ledger to the wall, then build everything the same that I did here With some few modifications, as far as screw size holding the brackets, those can only be the thickness of the wood you are attaching to the wall. So if you’re going to attach it to the wall you’re going to want to use concrete anchors, there are many different types. I recommend trying a anchor out first making sure it’s gonna hold properly for you before you attach your full ledger to the wall. But check out some steel systems may work better for you. If not, good luck hope that helps you. 👍
Great video. Very helpful! When you're putting the brackets in on the left side, I see some play in the shelf. If I'm wanting to just have shelves for an office closet with no hanger rods, what would you recommend to make sure it can support a significant amount of weight and not have the hanger brackets?
If you are nailing through five eights drywall and are using a three-quarter inch piece of wood that is about an 1-3/8 thickness with another 1/2 inch going into your stud that’s 1-7/8 nails you can use 1-3/4 you should clear any pipes or electrical going threw the studs if electrical and plumbing was done per code you should be ok. But you definitely have to nail into studs only. I hope that helps you and is clear enough good luck with your project. 🔨👍🏻
If you have lath and plaster walls that would work. If you have a regular drywall I wouldn’t use a screw longer than two inch. Or 15 gauge galvanized nails.

Level like the sea....
At 5:30ish minutes, what exactly are you using to nail down the shelves on top of the support ledger/brackets? You mention in the video that you're "tacking it all in." What are you using to do just that?
That is a 15 gauge Brad nailer I am using 2 inch Brad nails. Hope that helps 👍🏻😎🔨
is all the weight of the clothing on the hangars supported by those metal brackets? I can't have my rods supported by any walls. I wasn't sure if that would be possible but maybe it is. nvm saw how it is supported by brackets in the back. Can I do this without having a bracket to the wall? Just those metal holders and wood shelving screwed into studs?
I’m a little confused on the question?
Do you need the brackets if you don’t need poles?
Great question! You don’t need the Hardware with the pole just get standard angle brackets or you can make your own supports out of wood with a 45° angle going back to wall.
Again great question and thank you for watching👍😎🔨
How you do this project on concrete walls let me know thanks
Great question! I personally wouldn’t attach this wood shelf system to a concrete wall I would get a steel system.
You can attach it to a concrete wall if you’d like but you want to make sure the wall is sealed first so no moisture Fenwick through the concrete to your shelf system. As well I recommend using pre-primed product or treated product if it’s going up against any kind of cement or concrete. If it’s just a brick wall that gets painted, then you can install anchors to attach the ledger to the wall, then build everything the same that I did here
With some few modifications, as far as screw size holding the brackets, those can only be the thickness of the wood you are attaching to the wall.
which nail gun and nail size do you use?
We are using a 15 gauge nail gun with 2-1/2 nails also a 18 gauge with 1-1/2 nails
Great video. Very helpful! When you're putting the brackets in on the left side, I see some play in the shelf. If I'm wanting to just have shelves for an office closet with no hanger rods, what would you recommend to make sure it can support a significant amount of weight and not have the hanger brackets?
Hi TX great question you can install a 45% support using the 1by 3 ledger material. Install were brackets are thanks for the support have a good one.
hey there, what size did you use for the supports that the brackets nail into? the ones under the ledger. thank you.
We used a one by three and ran a few inches longer than the bracket. Thanks for watching
also...this might be a silly question but how do you avoid puncturing pipes?? I'm afraid I'll do that one day. Thx.
@@co-know-proconstructiontips I was using XGT deck screws, 2 1/2" for the ledger. No??
If you have lath and plaster walls that would work. If you have a regular drywall I wouldn’t use a screw longer than two inch. Or 15 gauge galvanized nails.
@@co-know-proconstructiontips thanks for your advice!
Absolutely our pleasure. Thanks for watching our vid‘s. Good luck on your build 🔨I’m sure it will come out amazing. 🔨👍🏻😎

What length screw are you using for securing bracket going into the wall?
They are 3inch screws.. Directly into the wall studs. Thanks for the comment. Happy Holidays!
3 inches? Wouldn't that hit possible plumbing/electrical?
