I have a closet where the shelves broke out and all my clothes fell on the floor!! I had no idea how to fix it, so I was looking at videos on how to do it myself. Thank God that's when I saw your video on how to fix it myself!! Thank you for taking the time to explain it step by step without fast-forwarding it!! I'm a 65 handicap lady with a 96 year old husband and we have to fix everything in our house by ourselves because of our income we can't afford to hire people to do it. They always ask much more than we can pay. Thanks again for being patient and explaining it slowly!! God bless you! Now I'll be able to do it.🙏👍👍👏

Thank you for posting your video! My dad recently passed away; he was our resident, "Mr. Fix Everything." He taught me so much about home and car maintenance! I really appreciate channels like yours because you give step-by-step instructions with visual instructions. Dad always said to read the instructions...he was an engineer, so for him, written instructions were a walk in the park. I'm a visual learner, so videos are much more helpful. When he would teach me how to do something, the hands-on approach always worked best for me. Thank you again for your very helpful, step-by-step, easy-to-understand video! I look forward to your weekly posts!

I want to echo the sentiments of the other viewers and express my appreciation for this quick, simple, and easy-to-follow installation guide. I had a rack similar to the one in your video that decided it and the drywall it was connected to were going to part ways - literally! The sudden break-up resulted in all of my clothes crashing to the floor. Thanks to your video, I was able to get it back up using the toggle bolts and the same holes.

This was a great overview of this, I needed to repair an 8 foot section that had been overloaded and pulled out of the wall. One thing to note, I was going to use toggles for all the supports in order to space them evenly, that ended up being a failure. It was impossible for me to start all the toggles in the holes simultaneously and still seat the support brackets properly into the shelf due to the fact that they needed to swing into position and the angles were simply not working out. I ended up locating all the supports on studs, which was certainly a more robust solution but not as aesthetically pleasing as I originally intended. I ended up adding a couple more supports to balance things out. In any event, this was the perfect video to help me figure out what I needed to do to accomplish the repair, thank you!!!

Great video. FYI - to avoid creating large craters in the drywall, if repairing or uninstalling, then make sure to remove the nail or screw from the plastic clip first. This relaxes the “anchor” and makes it easier to remove from the wall… I removed many of these from the closets to re-use in the garage. I was sure there’s a better way to install and toggle bolts seems to be the way to go if you need support where there is no stud. Thank you!

I trick for installing toggle bolts is to run the drill in reverse fast for just a second and the toggle will spin fast on and tighten to the wall rather then if you go in forward, it will spin off and end up at the bottom of the wall cavity….👍

Great video in detail will help a family member put back up a shelf in his closet that fell down because of weight. It was put using the anker type wall that easily fell out and made a hole bigger. Toggle bolt is the way to go.His house is built brand new, and I'm surprised the contractors use a cheap way to put the shelf up.

Time lapse for the sawing lead me to believe I'd get 3 done in 3-4 hours. It can be a lot of sawing!
The clips I got had almost no wiggle, so I had to modify the first shelf I did a touch. So a trick I did was to figure out that center hole by count etc. Mark it. Then put all 5 clips up for fit with the level on the shelf. Mark through the clips. Take down. Check for level. Correct a smidge. Then install as you did. No clip problems the rest of the way!

I have a manufactured home and the builders used this type of shelving in all the closets and in the pantry - cheap stuff .. as long as you don't hang heavy clothes on them or place heavy objects on the shelf, you're ok .. I've had to support them with 2x4's and am slowing replacing them as best I can .. I've even had to add masonite on them in the pantry to keep cans from tipping and small packaging from falling through.

15:55 well well well. I was searching for the ‘newer’ support brackets that Closet Maid said was ‘somewhere’ on RUclips. The newer supports have to be ‘forced’ back against the wall. 😮. I removed some of the material from between the 2 ‘tangs’ so that no force was placed on the wire in the front of the shelve. CM said to ‘push’ it back against the wall. That was the design stated the rep on the phone. ☎️ placing so much pressure on the parts isn’t what I call a ‘good design’.
IDK about that! My way seemed better as only compression was on the support to the wall. No wires were injured 🤕 durning my installation. 😅

Because you asked about what was useful... I didn't have a full closetmaid kit, but it was my first time installing this sort of wire shelving. I've hung shelves before and will choose placement based on location of studs, but your emphasis on finding studs is likely well merited if shelves are full-on falling out. Drywall's just not made for the weight.
The point I'd like to thank you for personally was how you set it up as just a single person. I'd been up on the ladder, trying to hunch up the shelf with my shoulder while looking at my level which was placed on the shelf arranged horizontally, trying to scribble into the nail hole with a pencil, and repeatedly smacking my head when the whole thing crashed down. Your sticking the level on the lip of the shelf and starting from the wall brackets made the second shelf much easier, take much less time, and result in less bruising. Thank you!

  • @mz4420

Thanks for the video. The hardware that comes with most kits are no good. Even though you tighten the toggle bolt, the drilled hole has to be bigger than the bolt and over time, as you load and unload the shelf it is going to wiggle and come loose. I much rather prefer an aluminum drywall anchors (rated for 50 lbs). If stud is not an option, I always use a metal drywall anchor. There is no need to pre-drill, looks neat and very strong.

Thank you, great instruction, very clear, lots of detail, good photography, key points repeated. A question... how would you install on an old plaster wall?

I have an older system from ~35 years ago that I am reinstalling. Some of the parts have changed in that timeframe, but this was helpful nonetheless.
