Look at those hairless bodies
I know that is the rule but it seems to benefit the defense and penalize the offense
That ad at the end was the best I’ve ever seen in a video.
I hate it when a team that I support goes down on some simple uncontrolable action, I guess thats sports for you.
3:25 "If you do something intentionally, that would be intentional."
Wise words by the ump there
I get serious John Madden "captain obvious" vibes from that.
That right there is why they have professional umpires.
@@almostfm MLB has the worst umpires. Joe West, Angel Hernandez, CC Buckner. Just a few. Professional umpires my ass.
@@brettsprinkle6347 No, MLB has some of the *best* umpires - it's just that some aren't as good as others. The worst MLB umpire is a pretty darn good umpire.

"These guys are happy with the sizes and dimensions of their field" is a great line coming from a Yankees fan this year doing a breakdown from Fenway.
Yup Stanton missed two homeruns because of the wall.
Especially considering that the video is sponsored by Manscaped.
@@jasonjay1053 Yeah, let’s not talk about that ridiculous right field the Yanakees have. What is that, 12 feet from home plate?
@@JSeriously sounds about right

He also missed a double (and a possible score) by arrogantly staring at his hit. The Red Sox hit a bunch of doubles of the wall in game 4 against the Rays and they ended up scoring at least once. Stanton should learn a lesson from that.
Jomboy pulling up this play from 2 yrs ago is why he's the best in the business.
Actually Red Sox Stats on Twitter pulled it up first
Yes 🙌
It ain’t the same at all tho lol. The blue jays one was just awful fielding. The Sox one is an unlucky bounce that went over the outfield wall. Ground rule double

@@AvEnGeD7X238 Not a ground rule double. It's a book rule double.

Perfect breakdown. Thank you for fully explaining the rule (intentional and not intentional) and showing that the Rays exploited the same thing in one of their games.
It’s actually incredibly interesting the rays have had this exact scenario be beneficial for them
i mean, they play in a home stadium where hitting it into the catwalks above constitutes a home run. they get what they deserver :)
Like the Tuck Rule - there had been a similar play a few weeks earlier that went against the Pats for the same exact weird reason
@@adverbs626 yea I can't believe that that only applies to their players
@@failtolawl I think the point is that the Rays play 81 games there and other teams don't
@@warlordofbritannia Is that true? I didn't know they had a Tuck go against them before that playoff game.
Everyone is saying players will intentionally kick the ball over the fence now, but it would be difficult to make it look accidental AND hit it with enough power to ensure it goes out of play.
Yeah, that seems like a good way to play a double into a triple or even an inside the park homer.
According to the rule it doesn't have to be accidental. The rule just says you need to not have "complete possession."
The rule needs to be revised. It shouldn't matter if you had "complete possession".
In this situation the goal should be to err on the side of the offense, since it was the defense that created the problem (no matter if it was intentional).
It should be 2 bases from the position at the time of being deflected, no matter anyone's thoughts or feelings about why they think it happened.
There should also be an additional allowance for the umpire to award more than 2 bases to any particular baserunner if he believes the runner would have had a reasonable chance to get further.
@@yorgle11 No thanks, adding more ump discretion is always a terrible idea. What could go wrong asking umps to judge something that varies wildly based on the runners speed, fielders arm, etc. The rule is fine as is; just as a ground rule double prevents runs all the time. Sometimes the bounce doesn't go your way. This is all just reactionary nonsense to a flukey play.
@@drmantistaboggn3525 The defense should not benefit by mishandling the ball. It wasn't just a random bounce, it contacted the fielder.
The rule as written is having the umpire decide whether the player had "complete possession" as a euphemism for "intentional". I propose to eliminate that whole question from consideration and use the "overthrow" rule regardless of the fielder's presumed intent.
Imagine costing your team the game doing that though. Fans will hate you, and teammates will look down on ya. Not worth it

What's up with the hate on Vazquez he's a catcher whose OPS was right around .800 in 2019 and 2020. He had a down year compared to his last two. Catchers for the most part aren't great bats with the exception of a handful of guys and no Plawecki is not better.
Good research. I have a feeling we will be revisiting that “complete possession” part of the rule in a future game. You might see a little body english working a ball into the stands.

I don’t really like watching baseball, but I thoroughly enjoy Jomboy’s breakdowns.👍😄
I'd say a "bizarre" occurrence but the rule is pretty straightforward.
It was just dumb luck...A fielder being celebrated by his team mates for making a mistake, has got to be as rare as hen's teeth...
Baseball having a straightforward rule is bizarre in and of itself.
That was a pretty obvious ground rule double application, I don't get what the entire stadium seems confused about.
Best part of this video is the flawless segue to the sponsorship ad at the end. Legend.
In this video: Umpires doing their job properly on multiple occasions. What a world.
Rule needs to change though. Rewarding clumsy fielding makes no sense, intentions be damned. It's not like anyone intends to throw the ball out of play on an overthrow, so it really shouldn't be any different with an accidental deflection
@@mikesannitti6042 Big truth. Our habit of rewarding the letter of the law over the spirit of the law is a very, very unfortunate cultural pattern. Following dysfunctional rules is not virtuous and I don't know how we're at this point where so many people accept this kind of thing.
@@JSeriously nearly all ground rule doubles are beneficial to the defense, especially with 2 outs and the runners in motion. A little common sense needs to be injected into these rules.
@@JSeriously I think the only time it would be beneficial to the offense is if the ball was close to the infield where there's no way they could have advanced two bases otherwise. In the outfield it'll benefit the defense every time.

Consider this: if the order of contact is:
•Bat, ground, over fence - 2 bases
•Bat, body, over fence - 4 bases
•Bat, ground, body, over fence -also 2 bases?
I propose a ground-rule triple, as the fielding circumstances are in between the usual ground-rule double and Canseco-style home run - and the effect that the 3rd order of events has on the baserunning situation is, as seen here, more substantial than a ground-rule double.

Simple stuff like looking back into the Rays/Blue Jays game that sets Jomboy apart from all other media. The incident with the same team and manager is such a helpful tidbit for understanding the rule and how it's been applied, plus the lipread of the umpire's explanation is so helpful. I've tried to explain this play to casual fans so much and it's so difficult, this really helps people understand the game
I was there last night. Grandstand 8, behind the Pesky Pole and a little closer to home. As soon as the ball went out, I shouted out ground rule double, AND I FINALLY CALLED A PLAY RIGHT!
Regardless of how you may feel about the conclusion of the game, it was an absolute gem of a game - the tension was there the entire time from the eighth onwards, we got some Fenway magic, some Fenway silliness, and it is definitely a game to remember.
It is not a ground rule double, it is a book rule.
5:27 Masterful segue into an advert. I love this channel and I don't even watch baseball.
The key word in Rule 5.05(a)(8) is "deflected". If Hunter Renfroe had deliberately swatted or kicked the ball over the wall it would have been up to the umpire's discretion as to where the runners ended up. However, that's not what Renfroe did. Instead the ball was unintentionally deflected when it hit him and it went over the wall, which is a ground rule double.
It would be two bases from the time the ball was intentionally deflected, it is not up to umpire discretion. It is not a ground rule, it is a book rule.

To be fair, even if they counted that as a run for the Rays, a two run homer in the bottom of the same inning is still a walk-off so it doesn't actually change anything
You can never say for sure, but that was a huge momentum shift. Had that not happened things would have been different.

I think to make an imperfect analogy it's the difference between an incomplete pass and a completed pass and fumble: possession changes possibilities more than intention. I'm a red sox fan, I think there should be a rule change, that allows the ump some discretion specifically if the runner was off with the pitch like this
That's a terrible idea. Then they'd have to make that judgement call with every ground rule double. The players, the umps, the bases, the foul pole are all part of the playing field.
@Schuyler Gazzo Amending rules to allow more umpire judgment would be a horrible idea.
@@alanhess9306 Good thing I didn't advocate for that. You're replying to the wrong guy I think.

Jom, you are about the only reason I even give baseball a moment of my time.
Going through the dungeon of rays games to find the similar play against blue jays. Jomboy you are a rockstar.
"look good, party hard" had me rollin lol
The rule you cited does *not* address intentionality. It mentions *complete possession* that is "subsequently" followed by a deflection. I can, e.g., have complete possession, then accidentally bobble the ball out of play.
LOL, baseball's version of the tuck rule. Also interesting that they had a play to look back to, that favored the Rays, with the same rule being applied. As with the tuck rule, you can understand why this rule was written with such specific language. Won't be surprised if this rule gets proposed for a re-write in the off-season. Logically, the runner should have been granted home but dem da breaks.
This is not at all like the tuck rule. This is actually a very practical rule. 2 bases is a pretty good standard for almost all situations. The Rays just happened to be in a situation where they had a fast runner who already took off on a full count with 2 outs. A slower runner with a different count with a ball to say LF might only be a single if fielded cleanly. 2 bases is a good happy medium since you cant just have umpires call anything based on how they feel the play wouldve turned out.
@@CleonofAthens There are rules where the umpire can use judgment about how far a runner would have advanced. This rule could be changed to one of those.
Why? The batter hit the ball a certain way that caused it to bounce the way it did. Then it just happened to deflect off the right fielder and go into the bullpen. Is it the fielder's fault that the ball did that? He was just trying to field the ball. Why should the fielding team get penalized due to the bounce of a ball that the batter hit? Once it goes into the bullpen and its out of play the fielder can no longer make a play on the ball. So why should the runners get a chance to keep going?
It is the same mentality as if a ball bounces off the fielders head and over the wall, making it a homerun.
This is just the side of it that benefits the fielder.
@@Tyler-yy5ds If you think thay way then your issue is with how a ground rule double is applied not the fact it hit a guy and bounced out. I respect if you want umpires to make these calls themselves but just know its way more complicated than it seems For example if JD Martinez hit this shot rn do you put him on 1st because it was hit to center and he cant run with a bad leg? Especially when the outfielder does not have a play at the plate? Its weird not clear cut at all.

@@squareversesine Lol im sure it's the rays fault he hit 1:50 and not his own
Damn, your videos are always great, but the extra research in to the previous game with Cash was just even better!
Not a “bizarre rule” its a fair rule. Only reason it wouldn’t be fair is if renfroe intentionally hit it out smh
It's a "bizarre rule" because it benefitted the Red Sox. Jomboy is too heartbroken/salty to give the Red Sox their deserved props
Except it isn't fair because there's a 0% chance they would have thrown out Yandy if he hadn't hit it out of play.
The rule also states that the batters advance two bases when the ball is deflected out of play. It doesn't state that only means from their original positions at the pitch.
Anyone with eyes should say that since Yandy was between 2nd and 3rd when it was deflected out of play he should get 2 bases from that point and score.
Also, there's nothing in the rule about intentionality so it is absolutely possible for someone to "accidentally" bat a ball out of play and prevent runs.
It's a bizarre rule, and Red Sox fans are very easy to spot.
Awarded for being a bad defender shouldn't be a rule. Change my mind
Jomboy is easily the best sports channel on RUclips by a mile

Love to see the rays get a JomBoy review but not like this😭
So if the rule helps you like in the Jays game the rule is right. Because manager Cash knew the rule. But if the rule doesn’t help you it’s a bad rule. Jomboy is a Yankees fan that’s why he’s saying the Rays got screwed by the rule and Red Sox got a break for the bad fielding by Hunter. That’s why they won the game.
"if you do something intentionally that would be intentional" best ruling ever
"Look good, Party hard" - Jomboy 2021
Good breakdown, silly silly
That ad placement at the end deserves WAY more credit LOL
Basically the Tuck Rule of baseball. Is the rule dumb and benefitting a misplay? Absolutely. Was the call correctly made according to the rule? Also yes. I’m a Sox fan, but I can’t say I’d be complaining if the Rays benefitted from it- it’s the rule, can’t really complain 😂
You wouldn’t complain if that happened to you? Calling bullshit lol. It’s a shit rule that needs to change. Outfielders “accidentally” yeeting the ball into the stands should objectively not be the best option in any situation, and any fan of any team should agree.
Rico Pablo II well it has to be unintentional. So if the outfielder threw it into the stands they would get another base actually
@@McNutEVD the rule clearly accounts for intent. This one was not intentional. I don’t really see how you’d change the rule.

That’s like 8 Jack-in-the-Box value menu tacos if you wanna live large.
2:38 “complete possession” is not quite the same as “intentional”. It’s a similar concept, but it’s easier to make a definitive call.
For example, if you field a ball, then make a bad throw into the stands, it may or may not be “intentional”. But because you had “complete possession”, it’s entirely on you so runners get 2 extra bases from where they were when you threw it.
But if you make a bad play on the ball and knock it out of bounds, it may or may not be “intentional”, but the ump doesn’t have to judge intent. Only 2 bases for everyone.
This allows for more consistent enforcement. Interesting they have a “complete possession” phrase in MLB and NFL that has to be carefully defined in the latter.
i mean, its a ground rule double with a unintentional deflection off of the defender. not so hard to rule. whats crazy is that he almost grabbed it and kept it in play. then it coulda been an easy run with a triple at least....
It's not a ground rule, it's a book rule double.
@@alanhess9306 Holbook added: “Once that ball hit the wall, it was no longer in flight. Now the ball bounces off the wall and is deflected out of play off of a fielder. That’s just a ground-rule double. There’s no ‘He would’ve done this, he would’ve done that.’ It’s just flat out in the rule book. It’s a ground-rule double.”
in the rule book it is defined as a ground rule double. the different stadiums could have different rules about their walls and what happens when a ball is in contact with them. but go ahead and argue for no reason
@@bobbyjones7609 No, it is not defined in the book as a ground rule double. You don't know what a ground rule is.
Ground rules are formulated to address unusual conditions for a particular stadium, such as the ground rule for what happens when a batted ball hits the roof in a domed stadium.
"4.05 Special Ground Rules
The manager of the home team shall present to the umpire-in-chief
and the opposing manager any ground rules he thinks necessary covering the overflow of spectators upon the playing field, batted or thrown balls into such overflow, or any other contingencies. If these rules are acceptable to the opposing manager they shall be legal. If these rules are unacceptable to the opposing manager, the umpirein-chief shall make and enforce any special ground rules he thinks are made necessary by ground conditions, which shall not conflict with the official playing rules."
The rule book addresses the situation in this video so it is a book rule and no ground rule is necessary.
i know exactly what you are saying and i know exactly what ground rules are. if they were playing in a number of different stadiums this may have been ruled differently based on their specific ground rules. RF in Fenway is one of those places. Because of those reasons and how they choose to award bases, it is easy to see why people refer to it as a ground rule double. even though you wanna argue semantics, if you ask and look at everyone talking about it, it has been called a ground rule double by many people who know as much about baseball as you.....so guess what, even though you may be technically correct have fun arguing the semantics of something that end the end will get you the same exact result. go stand on that mountain my friend
@@bobbyjones7609 " if they were playing in a number of different stadiums this may have been ruled differently based on their specific ground rules."
No, that is wrong. This rule is from the book and according to the rule, it will be called the same everywhere.
Calling this a ground rule double is as wrong as calling a foul ball that hits the umpire a foul tip.
The rule should be changed. We've got cameras so it's easy to figure out where the runner was. It should just be 2 bases from the last base the runner touched for any time the ball goes out of play.
This game ALWAYS has something new going on that isn't in the rule book or hasn't been seen yet, That doesn't happen in football, or basketball. Baseball is the best hands down.
@Coding Crusader True but i’ve never seen it before and the umpires didn’t know what to do and it looked like it was intentional with the rays. And eh, disagree with your opinion. MLB definitely has a larger fan base too.

This was a no brainer. It landed on the ground in play and then bounced over the fence. Rule says ground rule double. Easy call.
Your ignoring the fact that it could have a different outcome if intentional. This means that nothing here is automatic like you seem to think.
Kudos to Jomboy on this breakdown...he was thorough & informative on the rule
That rule should definitely be amended to count bases starting from when the ball hits the ground or wall. That should have been a run with the runner hitting second base before the ball hit the ground/wwall.
It's essentially a ground rule double. Two bases from the time of the pitch for a ground rule double has been the rule for as long as I can remember. Had the ball landed on the track and bounded over the wall - something that happens all the time in right field at Fenway, and often as unfairly for the runners - it would be the same result.
Agreed, seems very stupid to say that Diaz could only get to third
@@chaim5397 it makes perfect sense . it's a GROUND RULE DOUBLE. Just think of the outfielder like part of the field if this is difficult
@@burke615 It is not a ground rule, it is a book rule.
I just wanted to say thanks for all the amazing content. Huge baseball fan and love the little details and you show them so well. And your lip reading is amazing. Absolutely love those parts and really give some insight into what the thought is on the field. Big ups Jomboy!!
Not that bizarre, just happens very uncommonly. They handled it by the book, which I agree with, as what else would you do in this spot?
Exactly. I don’t understand why people are acting like this should have or would have played out any other way 🤷🏼♀️
Yeah for real, it happens. I was more impressed by the walk off homerun but there’s a lot of focus on this one play.
Jomboy isn't just a master of lip reading, he's a master of the marketing segue.
