      Agreed! I'm neither light or dark but my daughter IS dark skinned in the south and she gets that, much less than she got on the west coast. On the west coast she just gets "your pretty". It's become subconcious, the ligjt skinned chick didnt even realize she was saying smh. That's a trip cuz while both girls here are attractive the darker complected one is much prettier ...she's beautiful ! I'm just teaching my daughter to love herself and that her skin is Ethiopian beautiful!

    I love the conversation but I was ehhh once you guys started talking about Rachel. She might have fought for causes but at it's base the issue was that she was deceitful. Rachel has also lied about experiencing hate crimes which is extremely disrespectful. The problem is the matter of honesty. I have met white allies who did not have to go as far as to lie about family members and experiences to help. I don't want you guys to wash over her like it was no big deal because was she did was absolutely dishonest and wrong.

    • @th3queenB09
      @th3queenB09 9 лет назад +34

      I agree. Rachel could have did all her activism work and MORE as a white woman! Her lying and being deceitful makes her look less credible. And it hurts the NAACP's credibility which is already hurting on its own.

      +AliEsteem I agree that what she did was wrong. I am in no way excusing her. I was only saying that I wasn't mad about her wanting to be black. However its never ok to deceive people.

    • @greencupid1232

      rachel deciding that she wants to be black is just another example of white privilege. POC do not have the option of doing that and in the few cases where a poc passes as white it is to escape inequality and oppression. That is very different than what Rachel is doing, being black because it looks cool and is convenient for her and makes her happy.

      thank you for your reply I know this reply was from three years ago but thank you very much because I was a little bit dumbfounded by both of these black women that say they didn't understand the outrage about Rachel.....What Rachel did was disgusting... it wasn't about helping other people it was living out a fantasy in her mind and when that fantasy is over she can go back to being blonde hair blue-eyed Rachel and everything is Sunshine's unicorns and rainbows in the world unlike the Race of ppl she choose to impersonationed.........Her own parents were completely blinded sided by her actions of living a lie....Black ppl skin color literally are death sentence in this country on any given day.... The black woman is the most abused neglected abandon and discarded demographic in this country and they don't understand....Come on Ladies,......Shan said she went to a HBCU I'm gonna need her to expand her Black History Education vastly..... Shannon Boodram needs to recognize her privilege of being a light skinned woman and she is perceived differently and is close to a standard of beauty and the way we look is the first thing that others see. If she can walk into a room of white people and feel comfortable that is privilege. She doesn't have to pinpoint it. Everyone works hard and because of our positions in society we are more mobile or less mobile due to race (colorism within that), class, being able bodied, gender and sexuality, etc. I really enjoyed the discussion though and watched on both channels!

      I didn’t catch that initially, but when it was pointed out it was cringe. It made me feel conditioned on standards of beauty because it didn’t jump out at me immediately and I did not like it at all, but I will be forever cognizant of my subconscious biases. I hate the pretty for a dark girl mentality. It’s stupid, because beauty has nothing to do with skin color. However, her comment really is along the same lines. I get it. I don’t think she meant it in a derogatory way, but she has been conditioned like most of us around the world. I love that we are out here learning and deprogramming.

    Rachel is doing black face and she lied to an extreme length for a job that was meant to be for a black person and the NAACP has a history of valuing lighter skinned women and she took advantage of that. Also why on earth do we need to praise a white woman for doing things for the black community? Am I the only one that sees wrong in that? There's plenty of real black women who have done great work that we haven't heard of. So no she does not get my respect. She can do work for the African American community as white person without overvoicing black folk with their black folk issues.

I was really bothered by their defense of Rachel and saying we should be happy about her wanting to be black, her being able to decide if she's black or not is a prime example of her white privilege, she can black when it's fun but when the shit hits the fan she'll go back to being Becky. I also did not like the comment they made about ppl recreating Winnie Harlow's vitiligo...its blackface, point blank. There's no way around it, if they wanna recreate vitiligo, recreate the Caucasian equivalent of it.

    I think the black ppl need to learn to appreciate their own cultures first, be secure in it, etc, before any other race should come in and try to "help" us appreciate it, especially if they do it in a disrespectful manner. Kinda like, before getting into a relationship u have to be comfortable enough with yourself before letting anyone into your life, that doesn't mean u hate other ppl or don't want them in your life, it just means u need to time to understand yourself first, than u can accept help from those who appreciate you and want to help. Many of us are not secure in what it means to be proud of being black, so when we see other races appropriating our culture for aspects of it that we get looked down on, it can be very frustrating.

    Coming from a family of lighter skin black people ,my mother is light skinned , and I honestly do not think there is a difference in response between white people and light and dark black people . In a white persons eyes , we are all black and we get treated the same way . The only people who treat lights and darks differently are us as black people because we have been trained the think lights are superior to darker blacks .

      White employers notice complexion. White judges notice complexion when bestowing jail sentences. White casting notices complexion when producing movies. However, if Blacks produce their own content/ employment opportunities and resolve colorism, we can fix some of this :)

    I grew up in what use to be a small, majority white town in GA. I'm the darkest of my 3 siblings, and I remember one Sunday, after church these two older white ladies came up to me and said "aw, bless your heart, I bet you wish you were as pretty as your sisters, you're just to dark."
    for the longest time I had a problem with the way I looked, and didn't fit in anywhere. The white kids didn't like me because I was black and their parents didn't approve and the black kids didn't like me because I didn't sound like them.
    This was a great conversation. You guys know you have to do a part 3.

    These videos are so frustrating! I really wish y'all would have had someone with some more education on racial issues in America, specifically. This convo was extremely superfisical. Light-skinned and dark-skinned issues are deeper than just beauty issues. There are real, tangible benefits to being lighter complected. The Rachel Dozel issue being reduced to the "good" she did for the Black community ignores that fact that she as a white woman took up space in our community that black women, especially darker skinned black women, don't get access to. It acts as if the playing field is even and that that we all have equal access and representation even in Black spaces. And, for Shannon to say that she gets all her racism from black people, ignoring how racism actually works, while also saying she wanted to be aware of her privilege is laughable. I wish y'all could have had this convo with someone, whether light-skinned or dark-skinned, who was more in tune with facts about racial privilege. I am new to Makeba, but I've been following Shannon since TGAW, even bought your book. I hope this didn't come across as mean or condesending. I just wanted this convo to be more than it was.

    I can definitely relate with being the darkest in my family, when I was younger both of my parents were basically that medium brown color while I was like 5 shades darker than anyone in my family. It was to the point where several times people honestly believed I was adopted from Africa or India. I use to hate my dark skin growing up cause I was constantly being told by people and the media "light skins winning" or "light skin girls are the prettiest" or the infamous "you're pretty for a dark skin girl". Growing up I was definitely insecure about my skin color more than anything but now that I'm 17 and I'm more aware of this "subdivision" within the black community and I see people like you and Shannon talk about it I definitely now accept my skin for the color for what it is more despite the ignorant comments I receive or what the media portrays

    Nice conversations ladies. I'm brown skinned so I don't think I ever really received too much hate from either side, but I remember noticing at a young age that some black men coveted light skinned women. I remember there being girls that I thought were butt ugly but if they were light skinned with long hair they still got WAY more attention than a gorgeous dark skinned girl or even a brown skinned girl. It's the oldest trick in the book...divide and conquer. As long as we keep fighting amongst each other we will NEVER make progress as a whole. Dark skinned girls, it's not light skinned girls fault that you're viewed in some circles as "less than." And light skinned girls, it's not dark skinned girls fault that some people think you're a snob or whatever. If you want to be mad at someone, be mad at society for perpetuating these stereotypes and try your best to combat them in your everyday life.

      +Shazzy I also hear you, Shannon, about sometimes not even knowing the extent of light skin privilege and how you can also think oppressive thoughts without knowing it. I mean, even talking about your dark skin friend, you said that she 's "dark skin BUT beautiful." Knowing your stance on these issues, I know there wasn't any malice behind that statement but it goes to show the power behind colonialism and its spread of black self-hate, etc.

    Rachel did not help us. If anything she set us back. I am 17 teen years old and have come to understand, that if we can't be the front leaders of are cause, why have a voice. People are so quick to say Rachel has done so much for us and they ask "what are doing?" I am taking action and shame on who ever says that, because that just deteriorates everything black women have fought for. Rachel should stop columbusing us. People don't see this as a problem, but man we should take a clearer look at our history.

    That "your not even That dark "comment irks me, becuase honestly what is "that dark" and if i was "that dark" would that be such a bad thing? And i dont really think we should continue to keep dividing our own race lightskin/ brown skin/ darkskin skin, at the end of the day your still gonna be identified as a black person, at least to white people. most likely one of your parents are dark , so everyone should just accept and embrace another persons complexion as they would want their complexion to be accepted and embraced. As a darkskin girl i feel as if there are so many emotions we go through while trying to be accepted, such as worrying if your gonna get the job because of your skin tone, or if your already labled as another mad black women, or when people underestimate what your capable of, etc. We often forget that we're not the only ones goning through it. We all need a place to belong. So if i say to a mixed person ," your not black". And a white person says them them "well your not white either" well just what are they? and where do they belong? Is it wrong for them to identify with both entnic groups ?

I truly believe that skin tone has nothing to do with beauty. These feelings we have go back 100s of years ago as we know. Surround yourself with people who celebrate you. It took me time to get over my insecurity about my dark skin. I want us all to love who we are and how we look. I made a video about how this. Check it out let's keep this conversation going.

    This was a great conversation. As for us medium folk, most of us don't know what to call ourselves lol. in betweeners, Brown skin, or describe our complexion. • @jennifersinclair1519
    @jennifersinclair1519 9 лет назад +2

    Wow! Good honest discussion ladies thank you. I really can identify with the whole medium skinned mould which sadly I'm put in to by my own black people. However the same people have told me I'm dark skinned, and other tell me I am light skinned. I find that darker skinned people call me light skinned and vice versa, which I find odd. In the summer when tanned (I tan quickly and it fades slowly, UK weather) black women have accused me of bleaching when my skin returns to it's natural complexion. Which is very weird since my complexion has been consistent throughout my entire life. On the flip side no white person has ever referred to my complexion as anything other than black, not, light, dark nor medium! Mainly references to my beauty if anything. Would I choose to be lighter or darker you said, my answer is: I choose to be medium, it's what I identify with and what makes me, me. I love my complexion, I don't quite fit. So sad that moulds even exist.

    I'm super late seeing this but I just began watching Shan Boody's vids and ran into this. I think this is conversation that is just not happening enough. I think there's so much healing that can be done in hearing what the other side is experiencing. I, too, am dark skinned and was raised in a Haitian household with a light skinned mom and dark skinned father. I am the darkest of my sisters and because of my mom's insecurities, I learned early on that I was somehow less beautiful because of that. My oldest sister was about the same complexion as Shan and it wasn't until we all lived together when I was moving into my preteen years that I realized how differently the world saw us. I got uses to the "you're pretty for a dark girl" comment that I never seen as a compliment. It never occurred to me what it must be like to navigate life from the opposite spectrum. Hearing different perspectives made me realize I wasn't alone in dealing with colorism within my own racial community. ❤

    I think it's really just down to personal experiences at the end of the day. I'm mixed Guyanese (Black and Indigenous), Portuguese, Welsh and Scottish and a similar complexion to Shannon. Living in the UK and I have experienced walking into a room of white people where I'm the only "black/mixed" person in the room and the whole room has completely stopped to stare at me, as if to let me know "no blacks allowed". On the other hand I've also walked into a room of black people where the women give that same look that Shannon was talking about, or they try to make you feel like you're not black enough or even the complete opposite, and insinuate or straight up say that you're basically over compensating. But I just feel at the end of the day it really just comes down to what Makeba was saying (I think maybe in part one) which as you get older you grow and you come to realise that the issue is really theirs and they haven't really grown yet and are still quite immature in that sense within their outlook on a particular aspect of life.

    I know this video is old but i found the conversation so interesting! I live in Belgium but my parents are from North Africa (Morocco/Algeria) and most of the time people think i'm black-white mixed when this is not the case.
    It is quite funny how Americans easily talk about "race" when in Europe you will be looked at like a fool or racist because race is only used for animals, not for human beings. At the same time, some white people will use the English word "Black" instead of the French word "Noir" to designate a black person as to not offend that person..

    When i was in middle school i wasnt really confident of myself. As a kid boys always called me burnt toast and burnt brownie. But the worst one was oreo and a white girl called me that. My moms lightskin and my dad is darkskin. The only reason why i would be considered attractive back then was the way my body was shaped. Most of the lightskin girls wasnt shaped like me so it was a fifty fifty situation with people. In any situation no one can speak for each race or color. You cant automatically make a sterotype based on how other people in their race act. I also feel that in many countries they don't want to put a girl with a darker or browner skintone up to the plate. Its like they hide them from the world, when really people with color really represent the whole world and how diverse it is.

    you're both absolutely gorgeous women with amazing personalities. the dark skin/light skin issue started in slavery when complexion was the determining factor for what was "better" and more beautiful when discussing black people. the lighter women worked in the house or as mistresses and were seen as the sexually attractive ones. it was less common for a dark complexioned slave to catch master's eye and earn the privileges that the sex slaves "earned" being master's favorite "toy". and unfortunately that brainwashing has strongly continued to this day. this is one of the reasons why we haven't been able to "get over" slavery. so many issues facing the black community today stem from slavery and discrimination. same with the good hair and bad hair thing. i would compare that to darkskin/lightskin because it's another way to discriminate and separate people and those with "good hair" have certain privileges like being more likely to find hair products and being seen as more desirable while kinky hair is "bad", nappy, and described as nigga hair. it's the kind of hair Caribbean parents (im Jamaican) dread having to do and is often described by older caribbean adults as "undone". it's always "when are you gonna perm that nappy head" and "comb that slave hair". We've let racist white views dictate how we see, feel, and interact with each other for too long. We need to take the confidence back. We need to start acknowledging that these prejudices and dividing factors still exist, and open the dialogue with each other and our children. there should be no more goodhair/badhair, teamlightskin/teambrownskin/teamdarkskin. it should be Team Black United and eventually it shouldn't really even matter what race. I'm sick of seeing that we've been torn down so much we're now doing it to ourselves and our brothers and sisters. U can be light skinned or like rock music and you are still black enough. You can be dark skinned with very kinky hair and you are beautiful. Let's pls stop the fighting and support each other as Blacks and Women/Men. As People.

    First things first...Shannon is absolutely beautiful. I've always(since i was a little boy) wondered why so many people couldn't recognize the beauty if brown and dark-skinned girls/women. I got older and understood the origins of things but i still, often, can't understand when people(especially other brothas) can't see the beauty of black women.
    The problem we had with Rachel Dolezal isn't that she identified with black women/people, it's that she lied and said she WAS a black woman. In other words, she lied. If she had been honest and said she was white but had a connection with black people and culture, then it would have been fine. Iggy is different in that she is white and recognizably so. There's no deception in that area. We know what we're dealing with which is a white woman profiting from black culture. She was deceptive in other ways .

    I like the videos. I used to feel like a lot of black males did not like how black women's hair was, like the kind that's like an Afro or course. When people used to say "nappy headed" or something like that, I used to get mad because that's how my hair was, not nappy but puffy. It seems like it's gotten better with more people wearing their hair natural, not that weaves or anything else is bad, because in fact, it can be used to protect hair. Sometimes though, people act like just because hair isn't straight or braided that it isn't done or groomed. Anyway, love yourself because as other peoples' standards change, you would have wanted to be yourself all along because it's too complicated to be someone else. Plus, nowadays black males are wearing their hair, not that they ever stopped but it may not have been considered cute back then, I guess idk

    BOTH [are] 2 beautiful women but I must admit my eyes repeatly, kept looking towards the dark hue black woman.
    I don't know- maybe because its a new palette of beauty so gone unnoticed for SO very long; that when one actually look at the two, it's like..hey, ...wait ..a minute...this dark skin woman is gorgeous to. perhapes the case being is that-
    when one is constantly with something shaved in their face, can start to see things really different; as in the case of lighter skin being better; than dark skin.
    as said, they both are attractive women however, when I look at the darker skin, it literally open my eyes to seeing even more beauty;
    simply because the darker woman's beauty has ALWAYS been HIDDEN; whereas the lighter skin woman's beauty gets SHOVED in ones face; always
    it's more like if one is [always] given *minced pie, because *blueberriy pies were always hidden- placed in hide out, one finally starts to pay attention to [forever hidden] *blueberry pie; when it's presented.
    that's just my take; just [my] perpective.
    .
