What's up, LD. Happy Cinco de Mayo. I've never been married. But the last relationship I was in was pretty bad. She was an active alcoholic and it was only a matter of time before I fell off the wagon. I had nine months and then there it went. It sounds like your marriage is pretty solid and for that congratulations. You are lucky. I have developed this insane taste for buttermilk. I am pretty thin from coming off drinking, so hopefully I'll gain it back and not get obese. I don't know what it is with this buttermilk, but I love it. That waking up thinking it was the next day was awful. I usually had drank a lot and then knew I had to go back to sleep, if I could, and then get up and go to work the next day. It sucked.

This is so true and resounding to me. I’m a recovering alcoholic married to another recovering alcoholic. Neither of us knew about this when we first met. I will say that this has been an incredible honest journey for us both. I totally understand both you and your wife. I will say I am so happy I stayed with my husband. He’s an amazing man sober. As every good human is. Props to your wife for being so open about a problem that isn’t “hers!”
Also, if you’re doing it for anything/anyone other than yourself, you’ll find ANY excuse to drink. Any little thing will trigger you. Every excuse will lead you back to the bottle.
I have been on Naltrexone twice. The first time I was not at all ready. I drank through it every time. The thing about Naltrexone is that you still have to do the work. You have to grow and mature and heal and learn how to deal with life. It only stops the “more more more now! feeling so that you can slow down and be a “normal” drinker. I just restarted it last week, doing meetings etc and I’m finally seeing hope. Your videos are helping me! Thank you! ❤

Wonderful advice all around here!! I never really considered how a partner could find themselves feeling responsible for triggering the alcoholic to drink. That has to be so upsetting and stressful. I love the warning mrs. Ld gives about not feeling responsible for that. The emphasis on patience, but the overall tone of not hurting yourself or holding yourself back just to salvage your relationship.. it's all just really great advice. It's hard! Every partnership is unique, you can't use cookie cutter ideas to help aid in unique circumstances, but I think you guys are doing a great job of advocating support and passing on some tools that could apply to people individually.
Also!!! I'm so glad you didn't get the chance to try visine in your husband's drink, mrs. LD!! You can kill someone if you use enough! I only know because.. I ❤ true crime.. hahah when I'm not watching these inspirational videos, trust that I'm watching true crime 😂

Awesome video, as always! I did want to respond to the question regarding alcoholism and having children. For me it's tough because it's not just me or a grandparent. In my family, virtually everyone is an alcoholic. Brothers, mom, dad, aunts, uncles, cousins. Almost everyone is either in active addiction, dead, or in the program. And on my wife's side, it's not nearly as bad but there's still a good chunk of alcoholics.
It's also sad because alcohol is the one hard drug that basically everyone tries. If cocaine addiction ran in my family, I feel like I could tell my kids and steer them in the right direction with that. But with alcohol, it feels like people need to find out for themselves. I don't think you can expect your kids to never go to a party or never go to a bar and partake in the activities. Maybe there is a way, but it seems really hard unless they're raised mormon or something.
Anyway, just wanted to share that because it is definitely something that I'm not sure I want to pass down. It's sad, but when it's basically every leaf on the tree, it's hard not to consider it.

Deciding whether or not to stay with an alcoholic is never an easy choice. Especially if two people have known each other for as long as you two have. I think most people would have left if they didn't have such a long history with their partner, or if their partner had a drinking problem from day one. Your wife remembers the beginning of your relationship when things were really good, you guys basically grew up together like you said. Also, she seems to care about you very much, so I think all of this contributes to her staying by your side. My question for Mrs. LD is do you think LD's current health issues is a potential reason for you not leaving him?

As someone who has struggled with different behaviors and has been married a long time........I'm conflicted about the perception that a spouse doesn't play a role. We all have to take some accountability. The actions and decisions of a parent can impact a child their entire adult life. We can have a positive/negative impact on people we work with or even strangers. So while I agree. the decision to drink or partake in other harmful behaviors is on the individual.........let's not pretend a UNION doesn't at least IMPACT the decisions people make. There's a reason people say "you'd drive me to drink". A spouse can be a selfish pain in the A who only cares about what they think and want and sees their spouse as a tool to get it........or a spouse can genuinely care about the happiness, dreams, and hopes their spouse has......and they can love them and encourage them towards that. And this should go both ways. But if there is a lot of nagging, fussing, controlling, etc.......a lot of resentment can build up. A person can start feel "stuck". A person can start to numb themselves out. And sometimes that can lead to harmful/destructive decisions. Bottom line is, we all have the power to either lift up or tear down. Now the healthy/correct response to all of this is communication and to let your spouse know how you feel. But I know that's easier said than done.....either because of a poor communicator or a poor listener........so sometimes a counselor or pastor is needed.
Sorry for the tangent. This definitely isn't directed at ,Mrs. LD.........it's more a commentary on my own experience as well as observation of other marriages. What typically happens is you end up with a good guy and a bad guy (from the outside looking in)......and from my perspective........we're all imperfect sinners and we all need to take responsibility for our behaviors. I know many would think my wife is a saint for example, but really she's just better at putting on a show and burying the baggage than I am......where I just wear mine for all to see. But if I see my wife genuinely isn't happy, I want to know why and if there's something we can do to help. That should go both ways..........but generally speaking you have a giver and taker in a relationship.........but as Christians we should all be givers.
