You're considering the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 for Fujifilm X mount or the Fujinon 16-55mm f2.8 lenses and don't know which to chose? Which one is best? which one is heavier and which is more portable?

Great video man! Quick and straight to the point.
Thanks a lot Eli!
I just picked up the 16mm by sigma for a locked off live stream. It’s incredible and gets down to f1.4. It’s so light I could probably carry that and this 18-50 and it would weigh less than the Fuji 16-55! Great video.
Nice!
Yes this 18-50 really is amazing and small!
Take care
Appreciate your highly informative video. Thank you!
My pleasure
Thanks for the video! I've been debating between these two since the Sigma's release. Ypur vid was really helpful.... definitely going Sigma, simply for the weight, and the close focusing.
Awesome - you gonna like it!
Take care 😌
Should do a portrait comparison, and talk about focusing speed. There's an excellent video comparing the sigma and fuji 56, and there's a model, and footage of the shoot, etc. I think a lot of people will use this lens for general photography, but also portraiture.
Looks like I'll be adding this lens to my collection in the near future. Thanks for the video.
Cool 😎 sure thing - I take note! It’s hard knowing exactly what photographers want to see as a comparison so it’s good feedback 😉 take care
Hey Cris, thanks for making this! Ive been a terrible gear geek over the years, switching cameras left right and centre. Back to fuji because siza and portability. I just go out way more for my street photography than with the huge bulky sony (Use that for client work, but who would notice the difference if you know what you are doing with lights etc?!). Think im sold on the 18-50 sigma muuuch rather than the bigger fujinon! Cheers again, and have a great weekend. All the best from Oslo!
Hey there, I agree on “who will see the difference” and nowadays more than ever. What camera do you own currently? Cheers and have a great weekend too!
@@cris_photography got hooked after picking up an xt5. I have the sony a7iv as well, but it stays home most days, so I use it only for studio talking head and product photography. The xt 5 can also do that. Looking at the xh2s to replace the sony. The gear head in me talking again. The smaller lenses though...
Nice!
thank u for the review, Im sold on it now, had doubts due to no aperture ring but thats not a massive deal, it looks brilliant.
Glad it was helpful to you!
@@cris_photography just ordered!!
makes a great street lens (28,35,50,75). Pairs well with the 33mm f1.4 (for corner to corner sharpness, low light photography, and true 50mm).
Absolutely!
Please do a video about Sigma 18-50 vs Tamron 17-70
I take note! Cheers
Hi Cris, looks like a nice lens. I have the fuji 16-55 f2.8, great lens but a bit big to travel light with. Would you take the sigma over the 16-80? I would also take either the 55-200 or 70-300. For low light I could take a couple of small f2 primes. Thanks
Hello Michael, honestly I love this lens for its size and weight that are - quite frankly - ridiculous.
So to travel I’d go with the sigma is size and weight are a concern to you or simply if you do not want the bulk.
I think having an aperture of f2.8 all the way is great and I’d prefer that over f4 personally but both lenses are good in terms of optical quality so it really comes down to person preferences.
Take care
Thanks Cris, much appreciated 😊
Great useful video - I would also like to see portraiture comparisons - if you get the chance.
Thanks for the feedback! I take note for a future video 👍🏼
Great comparison. Appreciate it. I sold 16-55 and got this lens. I love it. 16-55 is too heavy with me. For me XT5 + sigma 18-50 is perfect for street photo walk.
Hello Ben, yes absolutely right 👍🏼 it’s a slim yet very versatile combo!
what's your experience on its resolution on the xt5? Does it resolve the 40mp? (I would assume that it does since it's developed for sony too, but most people test it on the 26mp sensors)
@@danielfulop I'm not professional so I don't use it to much. I only use JPEG, RAW is just backup. But my friend told me it's too heavy when loading to lightroom. With me 26MP is enough.
Update: After shoot with this lens in 2 weeks, i decide to stay with 16-80 for all around zoom lens. I missed the aperture ring. Feeling uncomfortable when using Front dial for it.
@@streetphotographiz what does it mean that it's too heavy?
Thank you
My pleasure!
Did you ever tried the tamron 17-70, if so what do you think of it? I’m gonna go for it next month👍🏻
Hello there, yes I did a review on it on this channel 😉
The photos from the Fuji lens look a bit warmer in their rendering to my eyes. Did you find that too?
Yes, a tad (not super significant but slightly)
I'd sooner see a comparison of the Sigma to the Fuji 18-55mm f2.8-4, probably a closer comparison. The 16-55mm is a legendary lens and outperforms a lot of the older Fuji prime lenses even. While it's not a great lens on the smaller Fuji bodies, on the XT-line with grip or the XH line with grip it's a nice balance.
Not a bad idea 👍🏼 thanks for the suggestion
I’ve had both. 16 55 way too big and heavy. Images are near same and for street photography the 18 55 is the way to go unless you want to hold a huge heavy setup all day.
I agree 100% on the size - absolutely true. Take care
Does someone know the answer? With a xt30 ii I'm leaning sigma though i could find 18-55 used at 35% less than Sigma.
Hello 👋🏼 it really depends on what you need for your photography 🤷🏻
What about focusing speed?
It’s actually not bad at all! Used the face tracking on the T3 and got most of the shots so I believe it’s better than the Fujinon
Will the sigma resolve good with the 40mp on the xt5??
Yes it does (I tested it)
@@cris_photography thank you! I needed to confirm this to sell the kit lens and go for the Sigma ★
If there is no aperture ring how do you change it?
Thank you. You use the back dial to change the aperture instead of a physical aperture ring. Cheers
I already have the kitlens FUJIFILM XF 18-55MM F/2.8-4.0 R LM OIS FUJINON, is it worth to replace the kitlens by the SIgma?
Only if:
a) you need f2.8 all the way
b) you care about the extra 5mm focal length
Otherwise I’d keep it
Cheers
Is the sigma sharper?
@@mickeytran1936 I think it is sharper than the Fujifilm 18-55. What also is nice is the close focussing distance.
The 18-50 is a no brainer, the fujinon XF is a bloody ugly cinder block that doesn't perform that much better regardless of its size and price. The sigma is parfocal, constant f2.8 at a tiny size, minimal focus breathing and sharp enough for professional use! I wouldn't even look at the Fujinon, if the sigma breaks after 3-4 years I'd buy a new one!
Hey Jaeger! I agree 😉
the sigma didn t look parfocal in other test I've seen
I agree the 16-55 is underwhelming because of the size but 16 vs 18 is a fairly big difference on the wide end, 2mm makes a bigger difference wide than telephoto. if you plan on traveling with this lens and using it primarily for outdoor landscape or architecture then the fuji 16-80 or Tamron 17-70 should be considered vs this sigma lens. the 16-80 at 5.6 is sharp. if you want to shoot portraits and people with bokeh then the sigma 18-50 makes a lot more sense but you also have to start asking yourself why you aren't using a prime with 1.4 or larger aperture.
Thanks for the video. It looks like its Sigma for me. Just need to decide if I should get the Sigma 18-50mm or Tamaron 17-70mm f2.8
The Tamron Is 17-70 not 80. I made a review of that one too on the channel 😉 cheers
@@cris_photography Thanks. Based on your testing, which of the two will you recommend?
Sigma has better optical quality. Tamron better all around travel friendly
If u get it to only for size and weight its oki 4 me ... But if u need the best image and build Quality on every Fuji Sensor including the new 40 mp Sensor, there is no way around the 16-55. And i f u look a t used prices u get this amazing lens with luck at the same price ...Ive formyself the sigma 30mm 1.4 and i love it 4 its weight and size but if i need the lens for important things i always take the 16-55. Thank u 4 your work and the great Video.
Thank you! 😉
Why do I feel the Fujinon photos are a bit warmer ?
PS: after reading the comments, I just wanted to say I watched on a bigger colour calibrated screen. I watched again, it still looks warm compared to Sigma
I think it is ever so slightly warmer indeed 👍🏼
@@cris_photography ah thanks for confirming. I was starting to wonder whether my eyes have some problem. Lol
Just noticed you missed focus at 18 mm 2.8 on the sigma. Too bad, I was hoping to see the difference in details at the wide end.
When? Please give me a time stamp
@@cris_photography 7:18
Otherwise, great review!
Thanks! I looked again on the original files and no - not out of focus (I can confirm it is in focus). U see it blurry? I focused (like for all shots in that series) on the « Minolta » writing
@@cris_photography it looked like the focus missed a little bit. Look at the difference between the markings on the front of the lens. Looks like it front focused a little bit.
@@awake780 You have eagle eye. sigma focused on the desk.
Hm it's really hard to find much difference in IQ so you must only ask yourself if is worth to pay cca 500-600eur more for Fuji.. The only thing what I miss with Sigma will be aperture ring. I have Sigma 56mm 1.4 which is great but it's strange how always ( my fingers automatic goes to ring and than I remeber oh yeah 😜😀).
Hey Daniel - I totally agree with you - same thing here about the aperture ring! Cheers
I feel the sigma is brighter in terms of F stop
👍🏼
Some feedback. You often take a lot of comparison shots but without your commentary it is kind of a wasted effort. A lot of us will watch this on some low res mobile screen and there’s no way I can tell a difference if there is any, to say nothing of the youtube compression.
Thanks Wyatt for your feedback!
The reason I don’t anymore is that I did that in the past and you get more negative feedback when you say what you think about the quality thank not and for a good reason: nowadays it’s very suggestive and it really is a matter of taste most of the time. So me saying “sigma is better” or “Fuji is better” doesn’t mean it is - it is for me. So my advice (and what I normally do) is to watch on a bigger screen to be able to see differences in sharpness and contrast. I shoot and export everything in 4K so while it’s not top notch quality you still can see a difference if there is.
For this specific video though, I’d say the difference between the 2 lenses is so minimal it’s hard to tell them apart!
Take care
Mobile screens are lower resolution, by pixel count, but not density. Most monitors that you'd edit on are around 100-200 ppi. My galaxy s21 ultra is 515ppi. Resolution is not an issue.
I think with the results of this test, it's a no-brainer going with the sigma. Sure the red badge has clout, sure the huge size of the lens will make people say, 'wow, that is a REAL photographer'- but the results are so close, it's sharp, it renders the same colors, and it's half the weight, size, and price!
Sigma here I come
👍🏼👍🏼
I noticed that you keep showcasing image samples without any crop. No one can actually see the difference between these samples so please for the future ZOOM into the details for us to see.
Hello there, I’ll keep that in mind. That said, you still can see the focal length differences (if any), the color casts and color temp of the files and the overall look. But cropping in can be a plus indeed! Cheers
I love to see your model.Where is she?
Which model?
