The trio's trip across the Okavango Delta is one of the greatest pieces of television ever, and it's scary to think that it has been 14 years since that crazy special. You'd think that Jeremy Clarkson's Lancia Beta Coupe would have been lost forever after the crew left Botswana, but a RUclipsr currently living in the country has found the car, and has since completed the trio as well...

0:51 Fun fact: The nosehair is a filter and is there to protect you from inhaling viruses. Like the..what was it... Oh right. *COVID-19*🤦🏽 I'm not a doctor, so I don't know if the nosehair would make any difference. But I sure hope Manscaped have thought of that, otherwise they may unintentionally have helped the spreading 🥺
Got one for Christmas, I highly recommend.
Nevermind the manscape kit, how about some laundry detergent to clean the marks off your hoddie
there is huge lanica fans in uk you should reach to them. surely they can fix the car
Hey dude from South Africa I would be interested in buy clarkson car and restoring it could I have info of the guy who found it.
James could buy a few of the old challenge cars and put them outside by his pub as an open-air museum.
You mean he hasn't gotten bored of it and sold it on yet?
@@vermis8344 or because it's not fully electric and therefore is old and obsolete

The Lancia would melt from the rain.

Drivetribe: "Jezza, someone found your Lancia from the Botswana special!"
Clarkson: "Great!...so anyway..."
😂
Honestly with how that Lancia was on the special I imagine that he just got some PTSD from working on canted engines.
More like
James: “ Gr8 News!!!”
Jeremy: “What?”
James: “We’ve found the Beta you used in Botswana!”
Jeremy: “Gr8, now anyways...”
I mean unlike Oliver the Lancia was a pile of trash
@@jeremyfong5684 Jeremy is an Englishman he wouldn't say "anyways" there shouldn't be an 's' on the end because only Americans do that.
Insane to think it was just sitting there for 14 years
It probably wasn't there for 14 years
It must be very insane.
Well.. In those places, people dont just throw away a car and buy a new one. As May said, people there have a fix it, DIY mentality. That car will serve someone until it can't be fixed anymore and then it will be a donor of pieces for other vehicles to continue working.
What, is it already 14 years.
For a few heartbeats I thought you said you had been sitting there for 14 years, 🤣☮️👍
They should've kept all the challenge cars (that they bought) and opened a museum.
Edit: and what was left of the Vietnam bikes and gifts too.
Museum of ambitioness and failure
There is a museum that holds some of the cars from top gear challenges called Beaulieu motor museum
Totally agree! They should still try to find or recover all those cars and do it. Big mistake not keeping all that
After Argentina, why would anybody want to try that?

Pretty sure the Mercedes was given to a man that helped the TG team in filming in Botswana
Ye it was
yeah thats no way the same car, just look how well the floor rugs are fitted.. like it was never taken out
I thought that was the beetle that was given to one of the crew there or might of been both
It was the Beetle that was given to the Mechanic that helped the crew during the shoot. And according to the Uploader of the Source Video, The Beetle is in somewhere around Zimbabwe.
according to richard porter's book (he's the script editor of TG/TGT), the mercedes was given to one of the fixers, the beetle was given to a mechanic and the lancia was scrapped - so i'm surprised it's still there
James: it would be wrong to deny Botswana of that car!
The car: sitting in a junkyard for 14 years.
The Lancia was, the Merc was in service. Which is logical since old Merc's have parts in abundance in Africa. James is 100% right.
Even sitting in a junkyard a car is useful, especially to any junkyard raiders on the hunt for spare parts

Lol, I just saw your comment when he say that
@@grahamariss2111 No, he's not wrong, but it's still funny that it made the challenges where the Lancia and Mercedes practically tore themselves apart during the same conditions.
@@captin3149 The merc was fine. At least I dont remember it malfunctioning in the show. It just needed a lot of weight-cutting.
yeah, but now he wants to customize it to stop being a "sh*tbox"
I'm not surprised James doesn't want his car back. He's been updating his garage for awhile now.
James is mem of thr future now
He’s said many times over how he’s not a fan of classic cars lol. And I can’t blame him. When you’ve driven everything under the sun, and are getting older, I can imagine you just want something that’s comfortable without ever thinking about reliability.
14 years! I feel really old right now.
right then, let's watch Botswana special once more 😁

Amazing always used to watch the program Top Gear thank you showing this special clip
Exactly the response I expected from James.
And I think it's the right decision too. That car absolutely should continue to be making itself useful to the people of Botswana. If it came back to the UK it would spend most of its time just sitting in a garage not doing anything
I mean it sat in a junkyard in Botswana, and was in stripped of parts, so…
Fun Fact: We are quite often in Maun and saw the Beta sitting there over the years. So when we broke the left window of our own Beta 2000 in a classic car rally, we asked our friends in Maun to send us the window to Germany. It worked and we fitted it to our car (also already sold some years ago now..)
James sold his Ferrari, why would he want an old rusted Merc? He is all about efficiency and having just the right amount of cars on his garage, not a collector or anything. Also he doesn't like the idea of being an old bloke! ahah
Not many have noticed that he has seamlessly changed from the original James May in the earlier Top Gear.
Selling his Ferrari and buying a big automatic cruiser (model s) is peak old man lol
@@VeyronBD you can't argue that the old Ferrari was more a museum piece than practical. The new car is both more comfortable, practical and has less maintenance.
@@JaySilva88 yeah for sure it just reminds me of what loads of people do when they hit their 60s, sell the sports car and buy a merc or something
@@VeyronBD sadly you can't do that no more, most Mercs are Renaults now.
Great video, I love when special cars like this are hunted and found
May, as well as Clarkson and Hammond, are inspirations. Most will only pay attention to or clutch to the funny bits, and that’s fine but the thing is; you can’t not learn from either of the three. It doesn’t matter what task, project, room or chair,,, you can’t sit across from one of them and not learn from him. These 3 are legends and we are able to watch them live and make history.
I like the sentiment that James May had on keeping the car where it is.
Sensible choices call for sensible people
I’d like to see them try to find their other cars, such as the ones from the original US Special (James’ Caddy, Jeremy’s Camaro, Hammonds Ram), or the ones from the Bolivia special (The reliable Range Rover, the Plucky Suzuki, & Donkey The Toyota Land Cruiser).
I think the land cruiser was left on that dune where it met it's sad demise the range rover would have gone to scrap it was mechanically totalled the Suzuki was sold to a bollivien guy probably
@@lewisburt3176 The Lancia was practically worthless yet they repaired it and sold it off. Granted yes it needed less work, but still...
Where are the cars from the Indian special
@@SaulGoodman76 Those we know where they are, as it was covered in the news of Season 18 first episode. It turns out, while they had left the cars on plinths on a hill in India, because there were issues regarding the placement of said cars, the BBC had to reclaim them and ship them back to England, where presumably they were restored and sold at private auction. This means they’re somewhere in the UK, not like the other cars from places like Africa & the ones from the 2 South America specials.
Ok thank you
Mr May is such a lovely person and I love how he knows that this old Merc is finally in its ideal habitat !
This is Quality content. Plz continue
What's really sad is that the cars from the Patagonia special (when they went to Argentina) have all been crushed after the police hid then in warehouses they ruled they were too much of a target so the had them crushed.
And all of this just because Britain needed to hold on to a rock in the ocean hundred of kilometers away :/
@@DefinitelyNotEmma That wasn’t the cause of the problem.
The Botswana special was the best Top Gear/Grand Tour episode of all time.
Thanks for the ball-shaving ad. Classy
Seeing these cars and the remains of the things they did, like James' art work are like rediscovering something historic...which it is
No joke, I had one of those Mercedes zip past me whilst I was doing 80kph on a dirt road in South Africa. Nevermind the speed it looked like it was packed for a trip around the world. Those things are truly robust and they're still very popular down here because they last longer than some modern cars.
Hi, I would love to get the chance to save and restore the Lancia! We have a small racing team where we race classics here in South Africa, and if I get the chance to save that car it will be seen again in all of its glory on a race track!
That would be noice
its great that people found those cars from the botswana special! now im also curious what happened to the cars from the middel east special so the mx5 from clarkson the z3 from james and the fiat from hammond
I remember series 10 of Topgear so well. 10 episodes that were all brilliant. I can't say how many times i've watched them.

- Evo X/STI
- Three supercars to Italy - GT3 RS/Gallardo Superlagerra and Aston Martin V8 Vantage N24
And so much more.
would be amazing to see them do something with these cars in the grand tour, maybe rebuild them to be proper safari motors and do it again
That would actually be really cool! I would love to see that
What about the only car that made it without requiring any modifications or repairs? The producers’ backup Beetle.
Funny y'all bring this up .. I had a dream re watching this special ... So I been up since 4am watching clips of this very special , lol
That's amazing that these two cars have been found. Hopefully they can be saved.
Lancias are so rare nowadays ~ we should rescue as many as we can ❤️
No, leave it in Africa! If they bring it to the UK, it will be a pile of rust within a month, just like all the other Lancia Betas.
Lancia is a dead brand, it's not a Delta, no Stratos or 037, just let it rust in peace.
@@DefinitelyNotEmma why let it rust in peace if it can be easily saved? I've seen betas much worse than that be restored and it's rhd which is fairly rare these days
If I could I would buy it and bring it back. Would be a fantastic project.

To be honest I’m slightly disappointed to see the Merc and Lancia refitted with the doors, boot, bonnet etc, they looked really cool when given the May and Clarkson special treatment.
Yeh, which is what James was talking about.
It's just the next chapter in the cars life. If the cars new owner wants to change bits and pieces I think that's up to them.
That bit of welding on the Merc is nothing I would trust...LOL!

Very interesting mate 👌
The GP registration refers to Gauteng Province in johannesburg, probably where they purchased the car from in South Africa. The GP " gangster paradise" plate lol
Exactly. Cause another Africa special there was GP number plates and it is Gauteng province like you said
Your telling me with all the money drivetribe has they can’t but these cars themselves
restoring cars is like owning a boat, a hole you throw money into. If they wanted them they would have kept them like hammond did.
Drivetribe lost millions last year. It was in the news. No, they don't have the money.
what makes you think they have all the money in the world?
(Check the HM Revenue & Customs Government Website - GT had to lend money to DT and then convert in back into shares to stop it going under - the boys even stopped paying themselves salaries last year to compensate - they're not in it for the money though, if they were they wouldn't spend £36mil of their £40mil budget and only come out the other side with £400,000 profit [2016 GT])
I'm a sucker for this special I heart it the vw bug was one of the best back up car don't tell Clarkson
It would be so epic to these cars shipped back with Oliver and do a special with them again, unreal that they are still about over there!

So, better than new?
$950 for the rotting Lancia, not a lot of money in the UK, must be a tidy sum in Botswana
To me, it seems quite a lot for a car in that condition, but I guess it's a Lancia.
Yeah, money like that goes a long way in Southern Africa.
