Richard, I know in all likelihood you will never see this comment amongst the mountain of others, so I wouldnt usually bother but I feel compelled to say thank you. Your presenting skills of putting us right there with you in the story has brought back so many forgotten memories of these sorts of holidays I had as a kid with the family, some of whom are no longer with us, making the return of those memories all the more special. Trying to sleep to make the journey go quicker, bickering with my brothers in the back of Dad's car, the excitement of pulling into the services and seeing my grandparents already there waiting for us so we could have breakfast and carry on down together, the competition of being first to point out the sea, "driving" the car on the beach on Dad's lap, playing pool and my great-grandfather beating everyone despite being in his late 80s early 90s, bonding every day for a week with cousins I'd usually go months without seeing, the donkey rides, the pier arcades and so much more. I'm sitting here as a full grown man now with a lump in my throat thinking of those wonderful times with those wonderful people, and those memories had long faded until I watched this video. You and the boys are truly a national treasure and while a lot of things in the world have gone downhill this generation, I'm glad to be of the generation that grew up watching the 3 of you 🙏

Wonderfully written comment. Just from taking the time to read yours and soak in Richard's story very much reminds me to appreciate those journeys and the future ones I'm able to still take with my parents. As someone in their mid-twenties i can very much empathize with Hammond and you on what those trips were like and can still feel like. Hopefully I'd be able to replicate this feeling for my own children some day. For now, however I'll just enjoy the moment and many memories I will still be able to make.

Ya if you go back and watch the first season of Top Gear, before May was hired, they had a guy who was a mechanic/engineer, but he wasn't interesting to listen to. May brought a visual style and passion that clicked with the other two on day one. The first few seasons of Top Gear are pretty much shows about cars, but you could see the chemistry building with the guys. I think the episode where they 'jump' a double-decker bus was the beginning of what eventually became the Top Gear most people think of.

      You’re not wrong.
The concept of three archetypes, a trinity, is one as old as time, we see it throughout literature, religion included.
There are many archetypes, but a balance of three is where the magic lies, and they were, together, a uniquely balanced thing that created magic.

That description of your journey from Birmingham to Weston really hit a raw nerve. It reminded me SO much of our own family holidays at the North Sea in the 1980s. We had a few landmarks along the way. When we saw a huge factory with a budgie painted on the side of the building, we knew we were getting closer. Dad used to wake us up at around 2 am or so and we got on the road. My parents always wanted to avoid the morning traffic. The Autobahn, the Elbtunnel, the massive containers and gantry cranes of Hamburg Harbor…all etched into my mind, and my dad was always driving. And I listened to the hum of the road and whatever was on the radio.
The house we stayed at over the summer had a very long driveway with a gentle curve leading to it. When the house was literally inching into view, I always got excited about the fact that it was now officially the holidays. By that time it was usually early in the morning and the sun was coming up.
Dad passed away three days ago and this description brought back a LOT of feelings and memories.
Thank you for bringing back those memories.
    I need a minute now. 😢

Roughly 2 1/2 hours, down I-35 and then to I-90. With dad, we would go up to the cabin, 3 hour drive into middle-Minnesota. I-35 to MN 371, and from there up. Vastly different scenery. Going to WI, you'd get the plains, the massive wind farms, then the bluffs as we went into the Mississippi River valley. Up North, we had trees, train tracks, and also crossed a much smaller version of the Mississippi.

This is a really special piece, Hammond, because you guys shaped so many of our lives too and it's amazing how total strangers have had such a big impact on each other. You guys are the reason I've been able to control my driving anxiety (by incorporating humor), you're part of the reason I've purchased a Toyota (apparently you can throw them off a building and they work!), you're the reason I work in my current job because you had launched Drivetribe and Foodtribe, which allowed fans and freelancers (myself included) to create content, and after the sites closed I found a full time job in the media industry and I no longer have to suffer sitting in a bank all day. Most importantly, you're the reason I got through a very dark time in my life. Top Gear/Grand Tour was the only thing making me laugh, but more than that - your programs showed me a big, beautiful world full of amazing people and experiences, and it made me want to stick around this life to be part of it all. You guys did more than just talk about cars, which are already objects that tell many of our stories. Thank you for all your work over the years. Much love 🩷

Richard, I'm just a couple of years younger than you. I didn't have an aspiration to be an entertainer or presenter, but like you, my love for cars and trucks really kicked in around '77, when my dad took me to the first car show, and I've been a gear head every since. New cars don't really excite me much, but the cars of our youth and our parents' era have always fascinated me, even to kind of wanting to finding the same models of vehicles my dad drove us around in whilst growing up, even some of the ones that were rattle traps, if I had the money to do so.
People, be responsible take care of your duties, but never stop dreaming and pursuing them and your aspirations. Even if you don't and can't make all of them come true, even if you get to Make one or two of them come true, enjoy the adventures during the pursuit, because you might find success in something you never dreamed of a long the way.

"In a town without a name, in a heavy downpour

Like a trip through the past, to that day in the rain

I used to love my Dad letting me steer his Ford Capri up the drive at home so many treasured memories. Hes now in a nursing home with alzheimers and I`m sat here at 55 crying like a baby because I never thanked him for giving me those memories. I remember telling my mum to record 60 Minutes one night because there was a segment on it about some car show called Top Gear. I'd never heard of the show, but it looked neat, so she recorded it. I skipped everything but the segment on Top Gear and watched that bit with my parents over dinner. It was then that I found my new favorite show. It was then that everything I watched, whether reruns or new episodes, was Top Gear. I've got all of the seasons of Top Gear, the good seasons at least, on a hard drive, and consistently watch them still. Top Gear shaped some of the opinions I have on cars, and I will always love watching these three and their antics.
I genuinely don't want to watch the final special because I know it will be the last, and I don't want to see TG/GT end, but I know that all good things must come to an end. Clarkson, Hammond, and May have turned generations at this point, into car people. Gonna miss seeing the three of them on their silly adventures together, but thankfully each of them have their own programs that we can all still watch them.

I remember watching the first season of Top gear with you, Clarkson and May...and i saw the passion you had for cars. i knew i always wanted to do something with cars, anything. After university i was very lucky to see You and the other two during your live show shortly after you left top gear but before Grand Tour.

My best friend said to me, "I love how you love cars". She literally enjoyed my enthusiasm and knowledge of cars. It made me feel good. My upbringing was much like this. Dad and I driving to car events or dealerships to see the new model lineups. Going on trips to the cabin. Sometimes sitting on his lap driving like I'm sure all of us did. Growing up in the late '60s and '70s my crazy uncle would buy a new car every six months. Camaro, Dodge R/T, Cadillac, and a gorgeous red Torino GT fastback I'll never forget. There was so many more including a custom pick up he made and proudly displayed in car shows. It was at one of those shows I even got to see the original Batmobile. That was a wild experience. It was just a part of me that wouldn't go away and then I eventually used that experience and enthusiasm for car photography. It was such a natural fit. Watching this video brought back so many memories that became impactful on my life. One's I wouldn't trade for the world. This was such a beautiful video and I have to thank Mr. Hammond for his contribution to the best show in history and bringing back some fond memories. Cheers.

It was never just about the cars it was about the incredible experiences that only a car could give, it’s why I fell in love with cars as a kid, I was infatuated by what 4 wheels and a tank of gas could do for you and when I discovered Top gear 17 years ago, I found you 3, a group that had the same passion I did and it changed my life, I currently own a 2014 GT500 and life couldn’t be better. You inspired millions and one day maybe a group like you 3 may spawn from it. Best of luck moving forward sir. You deserve it.

I love that there was a single pivotal and memorable moment where it all clicked like that. At 8 years old, I wanted to be an astronomer ...... then later found out that astronomers don't really stare through a telescope at the magnificent heavens much! I studied surveying and cartography then changed after fi ding job prospects for cartographers were very narrow, so, at my Dad's advising, I went and got a trade - became a mechanic to 'learn how to fix my own car' ..... and that's how I finally kinda fell into my niche in my working life. Been a mechanic for 30 years now, and still love it. Have worked on everything from lawn mowers, to classic Italian sports cars on the other side of the world to home, industrial equipment with wheels taller that I am to now working in engine research and development. I can fully understand and appreciate Richards fascination and love of cars and liken his travels to Super to my regular trips with family as a kid from home in Melbourne 4 odd hours north to the caravan up on the Murray River.
