As a teenager my education in movies was greatly enhanced by Alex and Moviedrome, made me fall in love with independent and world cinema, could listen to him all day.
If anybody wants to watch "The Mattei Affair" that Alex Cox mentions, Scorsese and his team has restored the film in 4K and you can watch it now on The Criterion Channel.
Jeez, the intro at the start with Cox waxing the surfboard for Big Wednesday transported me back in time in a split second. I'd completely forgotten I'd watched this until this very moment.
Unhappily, a lot of Alex's intros for Moviedrome have not been kept by the BBC archives. On the plus side, we've got at least a dozen from off-air recordings. We've uploaded at least one or two I think so far.
Nice to see more of Mark interviewing Alex Cox, would love to see a feature length Kermode Uncut special about Moviedrome. I have so many fond memories as a teenager staying up late to not only watch the double bill of films but those eloquent introductions as well. Moviedrome was my film education & is long overdue a return.
Count me in as another Moviedrome Nostalgist. Loved the Sunday night movie screenings, and somehow Alex's (& Mark Cousins) intros made you want to watch films you had zero prior knowledge of. And thanks to youtube we can re-experience a lot of these introductions. No idea why Moviedrome hasn't been revived in some form.
Moviedrome was such a treat. Alex Cox presentation eas so engaging you were completely sold on whatever he eas presenting to watch that episode. Miss that show even now. #bringbackcox&moviedrome
It must be my #1 Most Watched Movie. #2 is Tokyo Drifter. Trivia note: the director of #2 was Seijun Suzuki. Another of his movies, Branded to Kill, was a Moviedrome feature.
Brilliant, thanks for this video. There is a channel called "B Kurious" which has several Moviedrome videos (not mine, BTW), presumably converted from VHS recordings from TV. I would never have remembered this jewel on TV. Thanks to Alex and Mark for this piece of excellent viewing.
I loved watching moviedrome Alex showed and presented movies I was interested in seeing as a teenager and lover of all kinds of movies. wish there was a show like it on now. seems nowadays these movie gems aren't shown on tv anymore for young kids to watch and get a passion for.
thanks to Moviedrome I discovered the films of Alain Delon I love "The Girl On A Motorcycle" and James Cameron (before he disappeared up his own backside) with "The Terminator"
I'd obviously managed to block that aberration from my memory. I do remember him enthusing about Brian Cox in the role - having never seen any other portrayals, he remains the only Hannibal Lecter in my universe. Probably Mann's best film (not that I'm a huge fan of his - not much competition)
Interesting how this discusses people wanting Moviedrome back which I totally agree with - and ironically now I wonder how many people would petition to get "Kermode Uncut" back which I really miss as well!!
Like everyone else Moviedrome was my introduction to some of the more interesting and strange films the world had to offer. I remember it used to be on quite late, usually because the snooker over ran and was probably the reason I didn't do as well as I should have in some of my exams in school.
Sadly the real reason it will not come back is...The rights of films now are handled far differently then how they were in the 80s and 90s. It is simply that the BBC has been out bid by SKY and now NETFLIX (perversely brands that mostly everyone here has a subscription to). So now the films dont have the chance to be screened on the BBC and instead have to find other homes in less and less curated ways.
If I'd seen the movie before and knew I didn't like it, I used to still tune in for Alex's intro to hear what he said, and if he convinced me, sometimes I'd give it another chance.
Alex Cox is great but he did make a bit of a fool of himself on the Once Upon a Time in the West commentary track, getting one criticism so wrong it makes me worry about his eye sight.
could've done with being 53 minutes longer
As a teenager my education in movies was greatly enhanced by Alex and Moviedrome, made me fall in love with independent and world cinema, could listen to him all day.
I remember Alex Cox presenting Manhunter on Moviedrome. So great!
If anybody wants to watch "The Mattei Affair" that Alex Cox mentions, Scorsese and his team has restored the film in 4K and you can watch it now on The Criterion Channel.
The double-bill of ALLIGATOR and Q: THE WINGED SERPENT! Amazing. Learnt a lot from Alex.
Alex Cox could read the phone directory and still sound interesting! A vastly underrated director and film critic. Bring back Moviedrome!
Alex's enthusiasm could convince you any film was worthy.....the most memorable instance for me was "Trancers"
It's always a joy to hear Alex talk, just a shame that this was far too short.
Jeez, the intro at the start with Cox waxing the surfboard for Big Wednesday transported me back in time in a split second. I'd completely forgotten I'd watched this until this very moment.
I can't tell you how much I enjoyed Moviedrome back in the day. A big bundle of thanks to Mr Cox.
So cute to see Mark interview someone he clearly respects and idolizes. Very cool.
as soon as I heard his voice it took me back.always watched moviedrome.
Took me back as well. Think it was 1988
remember moviedrome foundly as a teenager wish there was something like it today an independent voice
I have MUBI which is like a curated way to stream original and classic films, it's really introduced me to a lot of stuff I recommend.
Please interview Alex more often! Mark and Alex resurrecting Moviedrome would be amazing!
Unhappily, a lot of Alex's intros for Moviedrome have not been kept by the BBC archives. On the plus side, we've got at least a dozen from off-air recordings. We've uploaded at least one or two I think so far.
Such a huge part of my development of my love of cinema such affection for this guy and that show 👍🎥🎬

I'd love to see Alex doing some introductions to more films of his choice on youtube and leave it up to the viewer to go find a copy...
Moviedrome introduced me to 'The Terminator'
thank you so much :-)
Always great to hear from Alex and, like so many others, Moviedrome was a key influence on my life.
Count me in as another Moviedrome Nostalgist. Loved the Sunday night movie screenings, and somehow Alex's (& Mark Cousins) intros made you want to watch films you had zero prior knowledge of.

Miss that show even now.
#bringbackcox&moviedrome
Loved Moviedrome as a kid. Introduced me to films like The Terminator, Dead Ringers, and Blue Velvet.
I miss moviedrome and I also miss itv late night beach films from the fifties to seventies. 👍
Thank you Alex for Repo Man, it's basically the best thing ever.
Easily in the top 25 best movies ever
It must be my #1 Most Watched Movie. #2 is Tokyo Drifter. Trivia note: the director of #2 was Seijun Suzuki. Another of his movies, Branded to Kill, was a Moviedrome feature.
More more, can we have an hour of this
please. Thank you Mark.
I remember first seeing The Terminator and Dazed and Confused introduced by moviedrome! Would love to see it make a comeback.
Alex cox sold me on the parallax view .A ruby in a mountain of
I wish these 2 guys did a talk about movies at the NFT. I would pay big money to go and see them.
Moviedrome was incredible, and 90% of that was because of Alex Cox's knowledge and introductions.
Big Wednesday. Wow. I had waited so long to see it!
I loved watching moviedrome Alex showed and presented movies I was interested in seeing as a teenager and lover of all kinds of movies. wish there was a show like it on now. seems nowadays these movie gems aren't shown on tv anymore for young kids to watch and get a passion for.
Loved Moviedrome and the great Alex Cox, bring it back, my memory is Alex introducing John Milius's film Big Wednesday.
thanks to Moviedrome I discovered the films of Alain Delon I love "The Girl On A Motorcycle" and James Cameron (before he disappeared up his own backside) with "The Terminator"
watched moviedrome as a kid and still have the book some where
There are torrents for Il Caso Mattei. It's quite painful torrents often seem like the best way to get a certain movie.
Uloz. It's right there.
I have fond memories of Moviedrome, watching classics like Alligator and Q the Winged Serpent
My stand-out Alex Cox Moviedrome introductions were Manhunter and The Terminator.
I recall the Manhunter introduction particularly well - he described Brian Cox and Tony Hopkins as "English actors"
I'd obviously managed to block that aberration from my memory. I do remember him enthusing about Brian Cox in the role - having never seen any other portrayals, he remains the only Hannibal Lecter in my universe. Probably Mann's best film (not that I'm a huge fan of his - not much competition)
20thCenturyPox Agreed
Funnily enough just watched Il Caso Mattei tonight at Home in Manc
Interesting how this discusses people wanting Moviedrome back which I totally agree with - and ironically now I wonder how many people would petition to get "Kermode Uncut" back which I really miss as well!!
I wish I could've seen this when I was growing up.
Fantastic BRING BACK ALEX COX AND MOVIEDROME!
Loved Alex Cox and Moviedrome
Always good to hear from Alex Cox. Sound quality on this clip is terrible, though. Sounds like they filmed it on a windswept moor.
Like everyone else Moviedrome was my introduction to some of the more interesting and strange films the world had to offer. I remember it used to be on quite late, usually because the snooker over ran and was probably the reason I didn't do as well as I should have in some of my exams in school.
Highway Patrolman is amazing.
Sadly the real reason it will not come back is...The rights of films now are handled far differently then how they were in the 80s and 90s. I'm sure Alex Cox introduced me to Q, The Winged Serpent.
I remember watching Moviedrome as a teenager. I wonder why he disliked Diva
sounds so much like Malcolm McDowell
Yes, yes Dr. Mark but when will you review Pete's Dragon! I can't see it without your consent. Tell me what my opinion is for me, please!
Does he actually cut his own hair in the mirror ?
where can I find a list with these types of films?
Here you go - moviedromer.tumblr.com/everyseason
Out American equivalent was Joe bobb Briggs monstervision
Where's this weeks podcast???
No podcast this week. They're away on a cruise. Yeah, I'm bummed too :(

Alex Cox is great but he did make a bit of a fool of himself on the Once Upon a Time in the West commentary track, getting one criticism so wrong it makes me worry about his eye sight.
Moviedrome ..... Enough said .
