Supposedly Kurasawa went to the vaults at the studio much later on. He found none of the excised footage.

Its a film rich in frame composition, great lights and a lot more theatrical compared to Kurosawa's other films but it also somwhow doesn't feel out of place. The performances are really good. The issue is the obvious cutting of parts that causes beeaks the narrative continuity, showing character taking decisions that makes no sense due to the cut content. I really hope against all hopes that the original 4 and a half hour cut is there somewhere, waiting to be found.

The uncut version was never released, though because the 266 minute version was shown to the studio before they cut it down we know that a print of the full version did exist at one point. The film was not a success, to the point that the studio declined to work with Kurosawa on his next film, so the chances of a complete original print being kept somewhere are slim.
