    **BONUS VIDEO THIS WEEK!
    PTSD is a complicated diagnosis and sometimes gets confused for ADHD/ADD. Attention-Deficit Disorder has many of the same characteristics as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder which can confuse the person suffering with both.
    It has been my experience that ADHD/ADD and PTSD can occur simultaneously (i.e., together at the same time), or one disorder can show up at a different time in your life. It may not show up until a stressful time in your life where attention-span, organization, and poor decision making is really needed. PTSD may not show up until you are triggered by something or begin remembering pieces of your trauma history.
    It can be complex!
    In this video, I highlight why ADD/ADHD and PTSD can sometimes create a diagnostic puzzle and maze of confusion.

    Sometimes it is difficult to identify PTSD and ADD/ADHD in someone who has a trauma history. The symptoms are very similar and tend to overlap. Learn more about PTSD functioning here: ruclips.net/video/T4yH4m0hBG4/видео.html

      i dont blame anyone with skills who do not choose to help me for needing assistance in their expertise, but not helping when I require it. I however am a victim of cowards who exploit that i enjoy solitude yet am able to be in physical proximity of others and enjoy myself as well. They disrespect my ability to focus. Waking up to the person's face or voice or smell or anything that you can choose or any situation that can leave the rational explanation to be used to make myself or anyone similar in characteristics inadequate to drive would be another example, a distraction.
      It was strategic victimization, because of my past actions and my lineage combined. I wasn't always passive, and I am now more uncomfortable because of rational and mature decisions I made in youth that I regret and now have trouble making up for.
      Thank you for giving mentally stimulating ideas to use similar to conversation. I get tired of others interpreting and projecting their understanding and ideals onto me without my being able to defend my self or my choosing to hear them.
      I hope you have a good day.

    Oh wow this is gonna be interesting! I've been diagnosed recently with ADHD inattentive presentation as an adult, symptoms have existed since I was a kid but only got unbearable after a very traumatic 5 years.

      I believe it! This is how most people find out that they have both PTSD and ADD/ADHD. Something happens in the adult's life and they get diagnosed with ADD only to later find out they have PTSD as well.

    All this sounded so relatable.I just don’t see myself ever going to therapy/getting a diagnosis, it’s a rich persons game. So I have to rely on videos like yours.
    I’m trying to learn how to get on the other side of cptsd and how to heal these things, but it’s awesome to hear this explanation. 👍🏼

      Hi Bunny, I'm sorry to say, I agree that getting treatment is a "rich person's game" or rather, a "middle class person's" game. Getting the proper diagnosis is difficult when you cannot afford treatment. This is a major reason for why I do these videos.

      It can be confusing for sure. There are so many psychotherapists who struggle to diagnosis both ADHD and PTSD if there has been childhood trauma in the past because both could be affecting the other - or it could simply just be ADHD. It takes skill, knowledge, and time to diagnose correctly.

    I was diagnosed fall of 2022 with ADHD and months before that PTSD. I was diagnosed after experiencing Trauma and everything went haywire. Ive struggled with lots since very early childhood. I really did poor in school. I day dreamed and spaced out. Really intense hyperfocus and impulsively. Emotional regulation and really sensitive to rejection and critisism. But i flew under the radar due to it being more internal than external.

    This could not be more timely, diagnosed few years ago with autism at age 28, currently in process of an adhd diagnosis which looks very likely. In that time I've also been dealing with my emotional past and processing very unhealthy coping mechanisms I have learnt and my familial history of poor mental health, trying to decipher and unpick what is due to anxiety/possible cptsd and what is adhd. The two are so deeply intertwined I feel they're part and parcel at this point, so this will be a very interesting watch!

      Thank you for sharing this! Your situation is a very common one and you may find yourself feeling slightly overwhelmed at the fact that ADD and CPTSD were overlooked or not diagnosed when you received your autism diagnosis. Sometimes providers miss the mark of other disorders when one specific disorder - like autism - stands out the most.

    Can someone have ptsd and then work through it on their own? Because I feel like I have adhd but I've had ptsd-like symptoms in the past like seeing my attacker in the street even if they aren't there. I used to relive trauma but I never felt the pain, just rethought. Now I've even forgiven my attacker and I think I've gotten over it, but I don't know for sure. I definitely have adhd symptoms (like all of them), so I'm confused now.

    Now what?Never been diagnosed with either yet I'm full blown PTSD and ADD.Where to start?

    • @TherapistTamaraHill
      @TherapistTamaraHill  2 года назад

      That's a good question. I would suggest, if you have one, reaching out to your family doctor and mention that you feel you might have ADD. It's often easier for a family doctor to screen or test for this than it is for PTSD. You can ask for an assessment and they should be able to support you. You can also get an assessment online through an online counseling platform like Cerebral or Better Help.
      Hope this helps!

    Hi Tamara - I've never been clinically diagnosed with ADD/ADHD or PTSD, but I've certainly had many symptoms over the years, that stemmed back to my own traumatic childhood. I would be certainly interested in differentiation between ADD and ADHD, or are they interchangeable?

    • @TherapistTamaraHill
      @TherapistTamaraHill  2 года назад +1

      Hi Jon, that's a good question. I believe they are used interchangeably by mainstream society. Clinicians often refer to ADD for adults and ADHD for children and teens. I often diagnose kids and teens with ADHD and then I specify whether their ADHD is inattentive, hyperactive, or impulsive. For adults, it's just simply ADD.
      Hope that helps! It can be confusing.

      Yes, it could be both. The interesting part of both disorders is that executive functioning is compromised and that is clear in almost everyday life. You could certainly take an ADD and PTSD scale from a trained professional (a therapist, for example) to see which symptoms impact you the most.
