Elusive Glitches: The Story of Early Explosives

- Glitches such as Barrier Skip and Moonwarp are considered to be Holy Grails of 3D Zelda Speedrunning. In this video, I recount the story of the Holy Grail for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. A trick known as Early Explosives.

The footage used in this video comes from a number of sources. Any footage of the original game came from either ZFG or Exodus122.
ZFG: / @zfg
Exodus122: / @exodus122
The footage of Ocarina of Time 3D starts out being upscaled on the emulator Citra. But recording footage on Citra turned out to be very time consuming, so instead I opted to record most of it on my own 3DS (this is why the video quality seems to get worse after the deku tree cutscene clip).
Some of the concepts I explain in this video are greatly simplified. Here are links to more technical explanations:

After all of these amazing “elusive” episodes, it feels genuinely strange to have one end on a victory. Very good, but strange.
I mean it is technically a victory in an any% finish scenario. There still isn't a way to get explosives early from what I have gathered. Whether or not that "matters" idk, but I would assume early explosives would be pretty useful for something like 100% maybe.
Dude spoilers you idiot
@QY well if it's a SPOILER it shouldn't be in the top comments.
Ok Jade!!!!!!!!
Rock at the bottom of the well has to go home now, its getting late and hes had a hard day.
his boss puts him under a lot of pressure, i mean its 12 hours of non-stop bottom of the barrel hard work.
he really is in a tight spot, so i can understand him breaking loose at night.
Being a rock is just hard, and that’s the stone cold truth
@@chungman6167 good, good, good...
Omg that sigh really made a point of how painful the non-updated amount of frames is
he raised his voice during near that point in the script, too. His feeling of frustration was palpable.
Grezzo strikes again
They also didn't update the cycle time fo MM3D either, so it's slightly faster and first cycle is REALLY FAST compared to original
Wait is this the joshuafe8 that has over 100K viewer points in Linkus' twitch chat
220th like for the out of date frames 😔
16:00 “Well... We happen to have a nice friend...”
*screen repeatedly flashes Navi*
“That friend is the invisible seam.”
*RIP Navi*
I also thought he was talking about a Navi Dive xD
"I guess the Rock has a Family to go home to." Yeah, that's Dwayne. He's got like a wife and kids and a prominent Pro Wrestling Career. Sometimes he acts.
hes a retired Pro Wrestler
To be fair to Grezo (I never thought I'd say that) I'm pretty sure Navi dive wasn't discovered yet when they made this game. So the only way to dive through the water was cucco dive and cuccos are only in the daytime version of Kakariko.
So it makes sense from a stopping sequence breaks perspective to only put it there at day... Makes no sense from a game design perspective though, since you can see it from above.
Personally I just think they forgot to add it to night version
@@TheGameCreator13 that and combined with a lack of need to makes sense. They probably focused on other things and forgot about it.
The first method for getting into BotW involved using a cucco to go out of bounds. So even that rock wouldn't prevent getting into BotW early,
@@TheGameCreator13 I don't think they forgot, I think they were just lazy and saw no reason to bother. "Well, cucco diving cant be done at night, dont even bother throwing that rock there in the night map"
They're not that incompetent that they'd just forget to make a change on a night map
Did it really take that long to find navi diving? That's so wild to me. It's so easy lol it's like one of two speedrun glitches my casual ass can do

Really great video! I laughed at OOT3Ds misfortune, and was super satisfied at the end when early explosives were consistently found to be skipable. You explained the tricks well and the little visual demonstrations really add to the clarity! One thing I really appreciate about your videos is that you explain the context and requirements of all games and tricks. Also it was awesome to see you shout out the glitch hunters too!
oot3d has more useful glitches
LOL mb i thought this was ZBR
This Elusive Glitch series really simmers my stew
Delicious.
It really apples my salt!
It taters my tots.
It Fries my fries!
Now I'm hungry.
This was an incredibly well narrated video! I loved the tension in parts where you said "we still to this day cannot get explosives in the well" and I'm like "ok the vid's over guys-" HOWEVER
I, for one, didn't like that. I feel as if he said 'to this day' too much.
Hi BLink
This one is super wholesome compared to the other ones
A lot of the others are also, in retrospect, because of the discoveries that were made since.
My name is siruox not siroux but thx for the credit tho ;), nice vid but I guess something else is gonna be find soon :)
siruox so your name is pronounced sir-you-ox and not sir-ooks? Got it.
A LEGEND♡♡
you were like forget early explosive's for magic lets just skip explosives all together.
See roo?
The best part of these stories is how collaborative it all is. For the most part it isn’t just one person figuring everything out. It’s a community of people around the world working together towards a common goal.

This elusive series is one of the most original yt speedrun series I've ever seen. Incredibly innovative in a niche category that is fully saturated with nearly the same content. Finding this series was akin towards opening up and eating plain saltines, only to randomly find a Graham cracker gently nestled and uncontaminated between two other saltines. Thank you. Keep doing you.
S U B S C R I B E D . A N D . P E R S O N A L I Z E D

Ah I remember entering the Bottom of the Well in OoT3D in 2012 with a cucco and also using Farore's Wind outside the Temple of Time to get the normal camera there... good times.
I will swear to any god will convince you; if I am ever in charge of the making of any game, I will purposefully put little breadcrumbs of promising glitches that get you almost nowhere. Just to keep this kind of energy going.
Sounds like what they tried to do with zero mission. But anything deliberate would likely get discovered way too quick, based on ridiculous stuff like mario 64 and it's continuing deconstruction
@@FFKonoko I was hoping by the time I learned how to make a game, my fellows in the field would have enough know-how to be able to pull something like this off. It only has to be slightly to the side of always working and not fixed, really. Organically grown is fine. XD
I love these documentary videos of the technical speedrunning scene. Such a complex, puzzling process and I love it. Makes for a special kind of satisfaction to watch. I can only imagine how nice it must feel to perform (successfully)!
The shorter any% becomes, the more interesting it is to watch longer categories
My favorite speed runs are souls games all bosses. Some any% is fun because of glitches but only if I already like the game
It's really cool watching games' categories diverge, imo. It's so fun seeing two radically different sides of games proliferate!
Definitely, credits warps are so boring, honestly.
Watching this video after the discovery of Moonwarp for Majora 3D makes the beginning even more satisfying! Amazing video Gym, have probably rewatched this at least 5 times because of how good it is. Hoping to come back after Twilight Princess gets one of it's holy grails solved.
Elusive Glitches is definitely one of my favorite RUclips series :P Keep it up buddy.
Talk about having a happy new year after figuring out not needing isg
7:48 To get explosives, one needs explosives...wat.
bombchu and bombs are two different things
with bombchu being (almost) useless in the game
@@sansnom5269 I know; I played Ocarina of Time 3D multiple times back in the early 2010s.
I was just pointing out how Catch-22 this scenario is, really.

One of your best yet! I like that for once it ACTUALLY had a happy ending!
Gym, I really enjoy your Elusive Glitches series. You explain everything in such a clear, interesting, and understandable way. Keep it up :)
Awesome video, I can't get enough of stuff like this. Great voiceover and script too! I love speed running content and your video is high quality, clear and very easy to watch
Going to go watch some other of your videos now! Thank you.
I must say this is a great video (well structured and explained) and damn your voice is calming. That's probably how i could watch an 8 hour randomizer speedrun of you in two days.
your voice is like bass boosted asmr
I love these breakdown videos so much. Keep it up my guy, they are really fun to watch and the narration is t1!
Fantastic video! I always love watching stories of how people discover these incredible secrets and mechanics behind a game, and the pacing and explanations were spot on. The fact it relates to one of my favorite games of all time is a great bonus as well, haha. I can't wait to see more in the future! :D
Why are all these speedrun story/documentary-type videos on RUclips so damn gooooood
There's something charming about hearing of the struggles and combined efforts of a community over so many years, just to beat a game a little bit faster.
Amazing video. Info was great, but the pacing and presentation especially was really fucking good.
this is what i want to learn in history class
wow I love these kinds of stories, the sheer effort and determination that the community puts in is nothing short of astonishing. Great story and well presented, thanks for telling it!
I can only imagine the Ocarina of Time 3D developers laughing in their basements
Until the tektite hover,
This is quite a heartwarming note to end up a video of yours which are pretty much bounded to be depressing
Thank you
i have so much respect for glitch hunters that it's insane. wonderful video as always gym!!
I always love watching these kinds of videos and i really enjoy this channels content keep at it!
I never thought I'd enjoy content like this but this is both interesting and always well presented. I love these.
Man, I don't speedrun or really play any of the Zelda games at all but I love watching all of your videos. This stuff is super fascinating to me and it's really neat to learn about the dedication that the Zelda speedrunning communities have - plus, the way you go about explaining what's going on is perfectly understandable for someone like myself with 0 knowledge about this. Good shit dude.
This was great! I'd love to see more of these glitch hunting history videos
Just now, I was listening to your video in bed (game explanations help me fall asleep). Just as I was starting to drift off, at 14:30 you made that noise that my brain interpreted aa a monster growling, so I snapped awake and shouted. So much for sleep.
love these informative videos Gym, keep up the good work man!
*sniff* that was a beautiful video, gym. great job
Some of the best narration I've heard in a long time, captivating
Awesome video! Easily one of my favorite series on RUclips.
These videos are excellent man, I'm not terribly into Zelda games otherwise but I watch everything you upload. Keep it up
Great vid. Well done. Speedrunning fits the story telling method beautifully.
Great content man. Keep it up. Definitely subscribed. Suuuuuper well put together videos 👍👌
Awesome video! Really well done. Interesting stuff!
I remember back in the day someone almost found early chus in the well as child but didn't quite find it to work still an elusive glitch and would be nice to see found
I love these videos, it's really interesting to see the process of discovering new glitches and implementing them into a route.
Love the videos Gym. Keep up the amazing work.
i love these videos! thanks gymnast!!
I really like these elusive glitch videos.. they’re kinda relaxing
Love the series! Keep it up!
would finding a consistent "explosives early" setup at this point be any faster? depending on how difficult it is to execute, it might make the route easier, and it is no longer a holy grail, but would it shave any time overall?
Yeah I'm wondering the same thing
Realistically, I would think not. First of all, many "clip out of bounds" glitches take comparatively little time to actually perform once consistency is obtained. It's why they tend to save so much time in the first place, regardless of the game.
Second, employing Explosives Early requires travel to a tertiary location in the chain. Having to detour to get Explosives Early takes time, but if you can Skip Explosives (by clipping) then said detour isn't even required. So you're saving time on that entire chain of events.
-----
Which, I want to highlight the video's own stated times. Explosives Early was expected to remove about 7 minutes from the 40-minute consistent times. Skipped Explosives winds up regularly saving 8 minutes. This means someone who would pull Explosives Early would need to find somewhere to save a full extra minute to remain competitive.
@@onijester56 it was simply that one little question stuck in the back of my head after the video. as great as a happy ending is, it fails to encourage glitch hunters, and if that tiny ray of light existed, it would help make up for it. i have no experience pulling off either skip in the video, but set up time is something to consider for both glitches. it was only mentioned briefly, but i did hear him claim that the death mountain fairy skip was difficult and finicky to set up, so it is theoretically possible that a detour could be faster if a consistent method was found. I also thought runners liked having back up plans, which even a slower explosives detour could provide for marathon runs.
@@cullenlatham2366 I know I'm about 2 months late, but I'm going to comment regardless. Glitch hunters are a dedicated section of the speedrunning community who've taken it upon themselves to find glitches no matter what they are or how significant it might be. While their search can be focused like trying to find explosives early or whatnot, just because an alternative is found doesn't mean they will stop searching for it or glitches in general. There are many glitches that are found, but don't have a use until much later. A good example would be Ocarina items from OoT. The ability to use any item as an ocarina was found long before it became relevant, it was a fun glitch but wasn't really useful at the time. Not until wrong warping was discovered. Then all the sudden this small glitch became a key function of a much larger glitch. You also have other categories to think about. I'm pretty sure early explosives would be useful in 100% runs of the game or an all dungeons run. Even if not, it could be useful in a future glitch that requires you to have explosives, but no bomb bag, we just don't know. This is why any glitch that's found is worth the investment, no matter how seemingly insignificant it seems. I would like to say while I'm not a glitch hunter myself, this I think is the mindset of many a glitch hunter at least to some degree.
@@yppahdalg2397 i was speaking mostly from that same mindset of trying to find the value of it. I was seeing if there was any hypothetical advantage to finding it fast for those of us who only have a casual interest in glitch hunting. If there is hope, that leads to inspiration. with the "happy ending", there is less reason for would-be glitch hunters to look into the scenarios that could result in such a development. The other side of the coin is that anyone actively glitch hunting for the game will now put early explosives lower on their bucket list as an alternative already exists.
man. gymnast, you make the best video essays
That was interesting. Please make more videos like that ! Good luck my friend
gymnast's videos are the best outreach for speedrunning out there.
This is exactly what I love about the speedrunning community for all games. Following a lot of these tricks and skips for over 20 years, it never ceases to amaze me!
This was a really entertaining video! Reminded me of Summoning Salt
7:19 aww that’s sweet
Your explanation vids always make my day!
I really liked this. More of these please! :D
This video series is great. I cannot wait for another. Whenever it will release.
this might just be the best elusive glitches video yet! such a happy ending! yay! haha
the downside is that with a solution comes a lack of motivation for potential glitch hunters that watch the video to continue (or start) hunting.
I followed along and enjoyed this so much, that I hadn't realized 22 Minuets went by!
These videos are so good, please do more
Gj on everything gym!
I'm a BIG Legend of Zelda fan and I'm not gonna lie, I used to despise the thought of speedrunners. But after watching this video, after learning the epic struggle for the Holy Hylian Grail. I'm moved. It has touched my god damn soul and I now have full respect for the community of Zelda speedrunners. I love you all.
Jesus this video is a rollercoaster. i love it
Wonderful video man you explain everything clearly and make orther video like that ;)
Or so you thought… GIM is difficult, and nobody's ever done proper documentation on how you can manipulate for any item, and can only be triggered a limited number of times, because you can't trigger it as many times as you want to get every item.
Very well-made video :)
You already know that now that this has been uploaded it's going to be found within the next two weeks right
It's already been found? Did you watch the whole video?
What will be found? Did you watch the video?
@@Precel42 Early explosives =\= skipping explosives.
Early explosives is impossible. I think That's the moral of the story. Sometimes you get so focused on one thing you ignore other options. You don't need to get them early you just dont even need them.
@@unclevivid9028 I know I'm 2 months late but I'm commenting anyway. This is a terrible mindset to have. The whole Elusive Glitches series is about making skips of things that are currently impossible to do. For the longest time barrier skip was impossible to, but that didn't stop people from trying to find a possible way. Even if Early explosives isn't useful in any% runs anymore, if found it could be useful in 100% or all dungeons. Who knows, in the future it might be found that you don't even need Farore's wind to wrong warp. There might be a glitch found where you need explosives but an't have a bomb bag in your inventory. We just don't know. In the original Oot, there were many glitches found that had no use until later. Ocarina items for example. It was found that you could use any item as an ocarina relatively early on, it was a fun glitch but had no use. Not until wrong warping was discovered. Then all of a sudden this simple glitch became a key component of the much larger glitch.
I love these types of videos
This was an emotional roller coaster man
Man! This one was crazy good!
Man i'm not a speedrunner and i haven't played any of the zelda games except for botw but these are the kind of videos that i love to watch at 3:00 a.m, somehow I actually care about this stuff
That sigh 😂😂😂😂😂😂 14:30
I like how it went from 'Early Explosives' to 'No Explosives'.
Makes me wonder if we should add new criteria to finishing a game.
Right now it's get to the credits asap. Credits warp are OP in that regard.
What if it was changed to 1. defeat the final boss, or get to some scene after it if those exist, and THEN get the credits.
That's not any%, though! It would be a separate category
Man...you guys are way better at this than I am.
I'm only trying to complete as much of the game without entering any dungeon. Yes, I know this is a crazy idea, but ideally I'm just trying to create a basic starter save that provides me as many additional items from.the beginning of the game.
I used multiple glitches to get there; Megaton Hammer on B button, Walking While Talking, Navi Dive, and currently attempting trying to climb the seam in Geruto Valley to get into the fortress.
Doing these, I've been able to get;
7 hearts overall
Magic Meter
24 Gold Skultulas
Fairy Ocarina
First 3 masks
3 Bottles
Din's Fire
Lense of Truth
The goal is to hopefully get Farore's Wind, Nayru's Love, the Silver Gauntlets, and hopefully some Bombchus. If only the Bombchu Bowling lady would let me play.
Really great video :)
Hey, thanks for makin this.
Such a wonderful video
I've really enjoyed listening to the history of this "holy grail". Hearing about the tricks and glitches and how people discover them and how these things work is fascinating to me. Loving them.
Every time I watch one of your videos I feel like I've watched an amazing documentary on video games made by someone who actually KNOWS them, inside out
Good video, you've got a new subscriber. Just as a suggestion, you might want to try playing more music in the background of your videos to make them feel a little more engaging and cut down on empty-feeling space between pauses.
This is a really good video
