Elusive Glitches: The Case of the Gate of Time

On some level, the "gate of time" is every speedrunner's archenemy.
Wait theoretically you could use the gate of time to shave off some time? (Get it because you travel back in time via the gate of time)
@@jaydentt imagine a speedrun where the player goes through the game at a horrible pace but when they pass through the gate of time, the timer goes back to zero, or maybe even a really big negative number. Boom, world record by technicality.

@@satibel Unloading stuff when Link goes out of bounds smells like optimization to me. Im not sure what purpose it has, maybe transitioning to load screens faster?
@@Araragi298 the most probable answer is that it frees ram. (The wii has only 64MB of general purpose ram, and 24MB for the gpu)
it might also be that it loads the next zone, which is empty but still unloads the other.

It was mentioned in a comment on the last elusive glitch video, but I'd love to see a video explaining why the once-elusive things (like the Sandship Boss Key) are now possible. Also the theatrics were a nice touch.
Most of these wouldn't be that interesting. It would pretty much be "we RBM some shit" and that's it
again, they just checked all skyloft flags when RBM was first found and faron flags when Faron RBM was found. then checked which one matched with useful things pretty much everywhere
I feel like even for a single video it's not necessarily enough content
many of the things are still not really possible, but they are just bypassed by a faster route. that is literally all there is to it
Me too
The saga that is the battle against Skyward Sword's code is facinating.

Dude, why is SS so well programmed dude??? Every sequence break is either ALMOST possible or not useful and it makes the current routes so jarring dude!
@Hydra Most games aren't made to be pathed in a Speedrun (exceptions being games like Speedrunners From Hell, Clustertruck, etc.). A game with so few opportunities to sequence break/glitch successfully is just a sign of very solid coding skills on the company's end.

I would say that this could be a good argument for testing a games design, the longer the speed run compared with the intended game length, the better the games technical build.
Considering how long speed runs take to mature, and how they keep improving years (and sometimes decades) after release, you'd need a gate of time to utilise that in the development.
@@TlalocTemporal nice pun
What about breath of the wild any% speedrun
@@CristianGomez-yu8gp but they designed the game so you could, it would be hard but you could do it. hence having to fight all four of gannons forms before the main fight, they intended it, so the speed run, isn't all that much shorter than what the designers probably intended for those hard core challenge seekers, the rest of the game is just fluff for the rest of us that love the world and the lore.
Perhaps "shortest intended route" is a better criterion then

Event tick so fun. I was taught to never use it, unless necessary. So Nintendo probably knew of the potential for glitches and layered as much security on this guy as possible. So they tossed away a good bit of memory for this one place.

Can the beetle load actors for link? if so, could you launch the beetle into the temple while standing next to the OOB bird statue and see if you can interact with it after you recall it? These videos are so interesting! Thank you!
Skyward Sword, still teasing us with these elusive skips. Hope to see more
something about needing to open the gate of time to skip the gate of time is rather narratively fitting for the gate of time.
Y'know I always hear the story about how Miyamoto had nightmares about glitches, and with how surprisingly stable Skyward Sword is in regards to sequence breaking, I'm starting to believe it
It's actually kinda disappointing. You look at how torn apart Ocarina of Time or Wind Waker are, able to be beaten in minutes, meanwhile Skyward Sword goes "Nope you gotta play the game for 2 hours"
And even after the BiTMagic and reverse BiTmagic tricks, Skyward Sword is otherwise so stable that the trick for these otherwise intractable actions is literally to skip it all. Had the arcane magic not been possible, these would still be problems.
These videos are always great!
Loved the random theatrics 👍 You made that gate seem OP

This beong the only instance of a Bird Statue loading OOB, the statue unloading the frame Link leaves bounds, and Story Flags only being doable their vanilla way in RBM only further convinces me Nintendo fully knew about BM/RBM before release lmao. I've believed it ever since the Elusive Glitches video on Sandship's Boss Key. THEY KNEW. I mean, they programmed it all, so it was probably easier for them to find this stuff
Great vídeo! I love this kind of video

I'm really loving the Elusive Glitches series. It's fun to see just how many roadblocks everything in Skyward Sword seems to have lol. But I do have a crazy weird idea I'm wondering about. If you get into the Temple of Time in Lanayru without activating the Zelda Escape sequence, there is another Gate of Time there, since you can peak through some cracks and look inside there before beating the dungeon. I just wonder, how functional is this Gate of Time? I'd imagine they just added the same model in Lanayru as in the Sealed Temple. Could you theoretically skip the whole rising sequence, and focus on getting True Master Sword to activate the Gate of Time in Lanayru?
As far as I can tell, the closed Gate of Time in the Temple of Time doesn't react to anything. On one layer where it's open though, it simply softlocks when you try to use it: ruclips.net/video/6BHXmzcfd_s/видео.html
Ah damn. Interesting that it works at all though. I wonder why it softlocks. Since there's no fadeout at all it would seem there's a lack of loading zone entierly, not just a defunct exit value. And that sounds like something that can't really be overcome, no matter the glitches discovered. Shame, this would have made for some really interesting speedrun routes i think.
Watching this after Early Bossrush and other advancements is hilarious, the Gate of Time still needs to be raised and opened yeah but 99% of the requirements (fire sanctuary/ancient cistern, silent realm items...) have been axed. Good job!
Ah, yes. It's Majora's Mask index warp coming back again. We must find out how to do this.
Clicked because I recognized those symbols in the thumbnail from Oracle of Ages on GBC.
Hi! New viewer. Quick question.
...What the heck is Reverse Bit Magic and why the heck didn't you explain it in a video that relies on the viewer knowing what it is? XD
I think it involves using back in time glitch and basically loading a save as you use a bird statue look up "back in time glitch skyward sword" and maybe "skyward sword reverseBitMagic"
I'm not a speed runner but I can try to explain. Back in time (BiT) is a glitch that is used to save the title screen onto a profile. Once we have this save, we can do a bunch of wacky things. Reverse BiT magic is new and I dont yet know how it works, but that's the basics
@@cal276 I think reverseBitMagic is saving at a bird statue and loading a save at the same time because from what I can understand basically because every map is usually around 0, 0, 0 and if you save at a bird statue and load a save the game I think loads the coordinates from the bird statue you just saved at in the save you loaded and whatever layer that was active in the title screen
@@cal276 also when you do bit you can't have a save that can keep the status of having the title screen and gameplay if you save in the title screen (no loading another save) and close the game and reload it, it won't have the title screen (like when you reload the save)

Gymnast, how would you perform a new Skyward Sword glitch if you found one that requires to lose a couple of minutes save on one part but at the end you would have a last minute chop off of minutes?
Love these vids do more please
DAMN YOU SKYWARD SWORD!
Yo what if you just completed most of the game and openning the gate of time set the story flag in that save file, you could get that and put into the new save file?
Or could you even just complete the gate of time in reverse bit magic thingy and then have the value of the story flag to put into the file you are running?
It sure would help if you defined what reverse bitmagic is far earlier in the video
How is the sky keep only slightly faster than all those other dungeons and items from the current run?
man, i need to play skyward sword again.
I, too, want to play as little of Skyward Sword as possible
can we do back in time durring a cut scene or activate a cut scene while in back in time to set a fifferent storry flag
Conclusion, developers have put a lot of time to make they code robust as fuck
What if you do the RBM after saving at the Behind the Temple save statue ?
1:30 Link looks extremely concerned
Very fascinating stuff! Always interesting to see how games work and how we can (or can't) break them, lol.
Speaking of which, I've never really understood, from a technical standpoint, why the layer of indirection for scene flags and temporary flags exists at all. I thought maybe it was because you can't write directly to that area of memory, but being able to write directly to the story flag array seems to disprove that?
Probably a performance thing. Story flags are often tied to events accompanied by cutscenes, whereas the others are just from simple actions like pushing logs. Having it separate allows faster reading (as it just has to check the current scene and not load a big array) and likely allows the array to be asynchronously updated, avoiding framerate drops or the like. In the situations story flags are set, that's not really a concern.
@@LilacMonarch Yeah, I could see that! Would make sense.
Gate of time is SO cool, it looks so good
Past that yeah glitches be hell, if we could skip got then it would be easy.
I really loved that clever usage of the Wind Waker barrier breaking sound effect at the end.
(... I feel like this comment should be longer, but there's not much else to say about it lol)
Could you use RBM to save at the sealed grounds temple?
The gate of time is a cruel mistress. Allowing for a new discovery just to crush hope once again.
