Elusive Glitches: The Case of the Water Dragon Scale

- UPDATE: While it is possible to not obtain the Water Dragon Scale in the Any% speedrun anymore. That doesn't necessarily solve this problem if we still want to enter the Ancient Cistern without it. I'll consider this video solved if that ever happens.
Now that things have settled down with regards to Skyward Sword glitch discovery, I can finally get back to making professionalized rants about stupid things we can't skip in this game (and other Zelda games in the future hopefully).

Waterdragons love this trap!
How to skip the ledge
Step 1: Skip the ledge.
The humour in these videos are great. I'm not a speedrunner myself, but hearing about Skyward Sword and the trolling of it's mechanics are hilarious. At least to me.
Programmers will get this
Okay, pin Link against the small pyramid at the edge, and then perform a series of BLJs...
then send him to a PU and voila , just find one that has the right layer
SetsuneW you’re thinking of the wrong game, but now I’m thinking of how to BLJ in this game...
@@noone6991 thats the joke lmao
@Nate Ashbrook i mean .......
No, activate infinite sword glitch and bomb hover across the water
silent realms still haunts my dreams
I love the trolling lilypad. Unlike other random objects moving/disappearing/etc depending on the layer, there's literally no reason for that lilypad to move. It could just stay in its original position and nothing whatsoever would be lost, but it's as if they moved that one lilypad specifically to say "fuck you" xD
I mean it's probably so that if you want to go back you don't have to mess around with the swimming jump
@@Add_Infinitum but why would one need to go back? like is it related to 100%ing the game? i see no reason other than just to mess with speedrunners and those trying to intentionally break the game
@@JohnnyYeTaecanUktena you are forgetting that the majority of the playerbase are casual players, who will go into the dungeon with little to no beforehand knowledge. they might want to exit the dungeon partway through and go stock up on shields, potions, etc. and the lilypad is there to make re-entering the dungeon a tiny bit less tedious.
@@faaswwaa6704 I don't see why that would be less tedious when the casual players won't even notice the lily pad. I sure didn't
@@faaswwaa6704 Then why make you use the scale to enter the dungeon the first time? It's not like casual players wouldn't have the scale at that point.
Talk about the LEDGEnd of zelda
the legend of bugs: skyward glitchs
next week: SS Any% in 13 minutes.
"glitch into groose on his bird in the sky ceremony and ride him down to the past hyrule ,then just walk down to beat demise "
@@deaththekid922, “ for some reason, groose when collided with on his bird sets the trigger for loading layer three of hylia’s temple. This means that all we have to do is glitch into groose his loftwind and then sky dive into the green pillar, afterwards we are spawned into the sealing grounds, we head back up, skydive again and then we spawn into the hoard fight”
What do Skyward Sword and Onions have in common
LAYERS DONKEY, LAYERS
Ogres have layers, Skyward sword has layers.
Both make me cry
The only Skyward Sword glitch I want to be discovered is a way to keep the Skyloft clothes Link has in the very beginning of the game.
in the future this is skipped by early boss rush.
I love the pacing of these vids. The narration, visuals, and timing makes them really delightful to watch :^)
I really love how impressively ironclad this game is outside of the ever more creative applications of BiT, especially by Zelda standards.
@Marcus B Because Nintendo deserves a win every once in a while
And then there's Twilight Princess, whose savefile loader broke Wii's DRM.
@@dorukayhanwastaken LOL
I really like that series of videos - I like especially how well you manage to go into the details and the why things are the way they are, but at the same time make them fairly easy to understand. GG! :)
Why does it feel like Nintendo was trolling speedrunners with these just barely impossible skips?
Begs the question... When was the first Ocarina of Time speedrun and did Nintendo see that while making this game?
I've never felt this frustrated with something I will never participate in
hopefully there could be a glitch found to load in an area with a certain layer set.
Then you can basically skip everything and have runs of, say 10 minutes.
Sounds like we need a method to load a layer in a different map and trick the game into thinking it loaded that layer on the lake Floria map
Maybe some sort of bitmagic will allow that
I've never played this game. I'm not a speedrunner. I love these videos.
Where's Professor Layton when you need him...
Really love these videos a lot. Helps me to keep myself updated with the game even not playing it nowadays. Thanks!
Dude imagine if there was a way to use back in time to change layers. Literally the game wouldn’t exist anymore. It would be like five minutes long.
Love these videos, they provide a more in-depth look at the theory-crafting behind glitch-hunting/routing
I love those kind of explanatory videos. Please do more :)
These videos are amazing please keep them up.
Love this series, glad to see it back!
I really like the elusive glitches videos
Tomatoanus would call this "Speedcucked". I worry about that boy.
gymnast makes more elusive glitches videos so they get found like all the previous ones
You should make videos explaining why those ones are obsolete, I want to see what the solutions are.
He sort of has.
From what I remember, Ship is only in route for the bow, meaning the big key and boss are unneeded, and he has videos for both skips with BiT.
@@Tcj333 They only needed the bow for Skykeep. Well we don't go to skykeep anymore so we don't need the bow either to my knowledge
Yup. Nintendo's got a history of trolling sequence breakers.
can't wait to see you explain all those new glitches
I like these types of explanation videos, could you do more for the Zelda games you run?
so... we need to either A: find some mind blowing discovery that allows us to reverse bit warp to coordinates other than a save bird, B: trick the room into being in layer 2 through some other means, or C: reinvent the bomb-hover.
whew, it's been a while since your last one! Think you can make a small recap video in regards to your older videos to explain how those elusive glitches are now obsolete? would love to watch them!
The descriptions of the videos explain how they were solved
Hold on could a bomb jump be used on the lilipad? Like wait some time on the lilipad and make half of it rise out of the water then roll the bomb on the lilipad with the bomb about to explode the jump from the lilipad in the direction of the ledge while the bomb explodes behind you. Might try it out just food for thought.
I honestly thought this series was dead after RBM. Good to know skyward sword is still trolling runners.
There’s always a drive to find that new route for Gym. Lol love it.
Hi gymnast as always as brilliant video and you explained all the mechanics really well i think it would be really cool if you could do a video explaining all of the mechanics tricks and all of your know-how of doing a skyward sword speed run for people like me looking to get into speed running the game.
I love this series man
Ah finally Gymnast without ugly background noise FeelsGoodMan
Keep making these there great.
Great video! I like Elusive Glitches a lot
Give it a few weeks Gym and this video will also be made obsolete XD These videos are great for jinxing tricks into existence
Yo dawg, I hear you wanted to skip a ledge, so I made you skip the ledge to skip the ledge
Have you talked to tomatoanus about his video series on a similar subject?
You might be able to clip into the collision from the bottom snapping you on top
Is there something like zombie hovering in skyward sword? I can already imaging the bomb hovering from OOT would definitely not exist but there's gotta be some other form right?
I don't think there is.
There isn't because unlike wind waker, you die the moment you run out of hearts. In Wind Waker, if you get knocked back by a bomb or something, you have a very small window to use a jump slash which hovers you into the air which makes zombie hovering possible. So unfortunately, there is no way to make Link move horizontally and vertically like Wind Waker.
Silver_76
*yet
Trentthekid64 2 True. I’d be amazing if we can find an exploit or glitch that lets link hover.
@@si1ver_763 Well it is not in the realm of impossibility as Barrier skip in Wind Waker for both Wii U and GameCube was found. You know a skip that was considered impossible for the longest of time. Then again knowing Skyward Sword you can probably do hover but only in Layer 0
... I give it a month at most now lmao.
Real talk though, do you guys think it's possible? If so, how? Just a gut feeling that you have? Or any specific method in mind? Perhaps this will require something completely new to be discovered before it can finally be fixed? I love how entertaining this is to me even though I don't speedrun, I just find the problem solving at work to be absolutely fascinating!
Yes but is there a parallel universe where you can just get to layer 2 for the fabled lily pad?
Oooo he's back at it again
Can you make a video on how the other videos that are obsolete now got fixed ? Like how they were able to do them ?
In the descriptions of those videos it says the solution
@@trentthen642 Uhhh thanks ! I didnt knew that
Ah shit, here we go again.
Now Solved due to Early Boss Rush. We no longer need to even access Floria Waterfall, thus we can completely skip the Water Dragon's Scale.
Not really solved, we still have no way of entering the ancient cistern without the water scale if we want to do that (for like all dungeons)
@@trentthen642 Thankfully, as of about 5 months ago, even this is solved. All Dungeons skips the water scale using Cutscene Skip Wrong Warping (it also skips the Gate of Time with the same trick so both videos are obsoleted in that regard)
Is there any way to make the game think that there is a bird statue in that location? Almost something like an ACE (arbitrary code execution). It would likely be complex, but it may be possible to trick the game, so you can do a warp where you want to go
I wond if a glitch like super sliding or long jump could be found
The year is 20XX. SS has been shattered to pieces and any% is 5 minutes long. In order to remain competitive all bosses has become the main category making all the cool skips obsolete.
Damon Ullerick
:O
I've never played this game bit I suppose, demmage boosting is not possible, even using two bombs?
Or are there enemies you can maybe carry to this room and do a bomb launch enemy launch link?
I find it hilarious that there's still a robust speedrunning community for Skyward Sword because that probably means that more than half the people still playing the WiiU are trying to vivisect it for world records
This game is very stable
Well, so since there are ways to manipulate memory already, hypothetically, if one was to discover a simple way to, say, change one of these techniques to apply the layer and scene settings of one area to another, couldnt we just change the layer to match that which we need, and what kinds of skips could we do that way?
really interesting video.
farore has a silent E
Skyward Sword is like an onion, it has many layers
Is it possible to move the lily pad by standing on it and using the Gust Bellows to propel yourself backwards towards the ledge?
That wouldn't work. We skip LMF so no gust bellows and while we could Reverse bitwarp into bokoblins base, no way that would be faster just to get gust bellows. I also don't think that's how the gust bellows works
@@nottherealcrystallegionair953 Honestly i am surprised no one tried to use the bellows like that
just like windwaker it will be over a decade old when someone finds the skip
Well you can beat the game in 6 minutes. But it requires having a completed file first. So you have to beat the game to beat the game...
Wait a sec. I watched a bit of this earlier, and it was just showing a picture of the dragon scale. Now there's game footage? Did my phone glitch or was the video updated somehow?
I'm not an expert at all but since reverse bitmagic can be used to set certain flags to true and false, wouldn't there hypothetically be a flag somewhere for whether you entered the cistern before? If so there is a chance you can set that flag maybe? Just a thought
From what I understand that is a story flag and we don't know how to do those, we can only set scene flags
To complement this (correct) answer: we can abuse scene flags with Back in Time because a scene flag in an area can mean one thing there but something completely different in another area. So we can do action X in an area in BiT to unlock action Y in some other area on our file.
Story flags however are global: to get story flag A you need to do.... action A, and nothing else will work. Disappointing I know.
I love these videos, lemme just say. They're funny, interesting, and thoroughly disappointing. If you'd like to make more, but were worried about interest in them- well, *I'll* watch them!
If we could just make this backwards long jump, we could skip the entire Giant Enemy Spider boss fight, thus avoiding the trigger that locks us into Gay Baby Jail, *and* move on to Vineland Island, the final area of the game. But we're always, at minimum, 1 unit away from making the jump, preventing us from saving a whole hour of time and forcing us to do the annoying and slow "Run In Circles For 30 Minutes" quest for Piplup Guy.
What about dungeon save points?
I don't know too much about bitwarping, but could it sounds like it essentially writes to parts of memory that aren't supposed to be intentionally accessed. Could this somehow be used to write to the area of memory where the layer values are held?
Some sort of wrong layer glitch would solve a lot of problems.
Maybe you're overthinking the problem entirely? Could a simple damage boost work, from say, a bomb? Do any bitwarps place you in an area close enough to reach OoB through another method? What are the limitations of this room? (Example: You will always spawn in a kill plain when bitwarping here)?
Damage boosting in skyward sword sends you straight down (it doesn't work). As for BiTWarps (and Reverse BiTWarps), they all either land you OoB into the void (softlock), or somewhere completely unrelated to the ledge.
Have you tried [extremely obvious thing that clearly won't work]?
You'd get more clicks if you add link in the thumb nail
very fun
Oh
@@trentthen642 lol
Zero dislikes. Like all his videos should be.
Can you please make videos on how the prior episodes were obsoleted?
We RBM to skip the sandship and RBM to set the flag for the water basin being used so we just walk in
@@nottherealcrystallegionair953 oh. Right
I come from the future
And its strange
Who needs to skip the Cistern cliff if the Cistern isn't even needed anymore!
@@YourAverageLink Not really solved, we still have no way of entering the ancient cistern without the water scale if we want to do that (for like all dungeons)

Is there any chance to glitch which layer you are on?
Isn't this solved now with Early Boss Rush?
Not really solved, we still have no way of entering the ancient cistern without the water scale if we want to do that (for like all dungeons)
Don't you just bit warp from FS into AC? While that doesn't resolve everything what does that still leave in?
You still need the water scale to spin jump up the ledge to the Ancient Cistern, back in time or not.
How close is it possible to get if you try to jump from the further lilypad? Like, are there any damage boost tricks like in OoT

Skyward Sword Is My Favorite Zelda Game And Probably My Favorite Game Its So Well Made Love The Music And Grafics Just Idk It Hurts When Its Destroyed With Glitches. Because To Me Skyward Is A Super Nostalgic Game. Could You Make A Glitchles Run
First off nice spelling and second off people can break the game with glitches if they want and there is probably a glitch less category for skyward on speedrun.com . You could just not watch the video or see the word "glitch" in the title. There is a glitch community for every game. So instead of coming to a video that has glitch in the title and saying "I don't like glitches stop!" you could just avoid glitches and glitch videos altogether. How about that?
