    Thank you for highlighting issues with the breeding of brachycephalic dogs. It’s not just the puppy mills that are the problem. The AKC, UKC, EKC, and other regional dog clubs have a lot to answer for in promoting those breeds, which are so susceptible to breathing problems.

    • @tracywall4176
      @tracywall4176 Год назад +18

      I couldn't agree with you more!

    • @Miarahdd
      @Miarahdd Год назад +40

      Agreed fully! It's just terrible how they even refuse to acknowledge those breeds by breeders that intentionally do their best to make them have a better quality of life. In Europe it's becoming bigger that breeders are breeding back some old traits into brachycephalic dogs, such as longer snouts and better body and neck structure. Same goes for breeds like the GSD, there are a lot who are trying to eliminate the hunched back, which is only bred for cosmetics due to the standards of the AKC, UKC, EKC, etc. All of these dog clubs refuse to acknowledge them and even go hard against condeming those breeders, because it's not the standard. They're a big part of the problem. But many breeders over here stay dedicated to giving those breeds a better quality of life.
      In Germany, we actually have a term for dog breeds who are breeded with terrible traits that reduce their quality of life (frenchies, etc.) and tea-cup type of dogs (Pomeranian, mini Chihuahua (their brain is too big for their skull, leading to the buldged eye looks), etc.). It's "Qualzucht" and literally translated it means "agony/torture breed". There is no term like this in English, which shocks me honestly!

    • @Hermititis
      @Hermititis Год назад +27

      @@Miarahdd, "torture breed" is a fantastic term for instantly communicating the issue & painting it in exactly the right light.

    • @Miarahdd
      @Miarahdd Год назад +12

      @@Hermititis True, it's sorta also what it means in German, as it directly refers to the terrible traits those poor breeds have to endure. If I look at the GSD as a good example, I blame the AKC, EKC, etc. for how ruined the breed is now due to the back and hip issues. Luckily, over here, quite a few breeders are intentonally breeding "back" the old traits where they were much healthier.

    • @hoosierbaddy3052
      @hoosierbaddy3052 Год назад +10

      @@Miarahdd many purebred dogs are overbred. Which means they’re breeding and perpetuating dysfunction in the animals. Exploiting their weaknesses. That’s bad breeding 101. You mentioned the sloping of the German shepherds back. It is curious to me as to how that looks good. Is it a functional design? Probably not. They’re now prone to hip dysplasia. That’s gotta be a painful condition. Many animals are overbred. I haven’t seen a tiger that doesn’t appear man made. Or at least contrived in some manner. I myself would never get a brachycephalic dog. Trying to wash their face is difficult. They snore loudly bc of their nasal situation. But God bless ‘em tho.

      Many times ppl get in terrible financial trouble, or problems w health or divorce, for instance. While it’s never acceptable to dump an animal, it’s almost to be expected in a society that shames pet owners for being poor or working class and suddenly unable to care for their pets. You know how badly rents are rising, right? What happens if the new landlord(the only one u can now afford) says no pets? And u have children to house? No, this will never be solved through hate and judgment

My new husband had a little female dog who was herself about 11 or 12. Daisy would alert Bronson to bark when he needed to , like when a stranger drove up. We adopt only Shelter pets. The last dog my husband and I had together was a Senior Dachshund, apx 12 years old, found wandering the streets of a major city. She had several fatty tumors our Vet decided to leave, as they were more unsightly than anything else. We had her 5 years, and she passed just a few months before my husband did. Because of my age, I wanted another Senior Doxie dog as a companion once I was ready for one...But when I went to the pound, I fell in love--with a Terrier PUPPY! Funny how that works, isn't it? HOWEVER, I've made firm arrangements for his adoption by my daughter when I pass--I'm 76, and I want to make sure he has a long and happy life. Happily, my daughter babysits him often 🙂.

He was abandoned by his last owner, left on the streets to fend for himself, was getting attacked by foxes, had fleas and blood in his stools. He was severely underweight and malnourished. It took a long time to get to the bottom of his diarrhea and get him in a diet that works for him. He was 4kg when he as first found and now is a healthy 6kg kitty and so happy. I can't understand why his last owners abandoned him. He is the sweetest boy and I would give up my organs for him. I love him so much. I truly hurt for animals who were abandoned. At a "last chance" shelter in the US, they put a fearful dog in with a person- and a really friendly dog. The shy dogs learn trust from the happy, friendly dogs.

    Who abandons a dog: people who run out of money, people who need a job because of sudden dismissal or long-term un employment, mental and physical health issues... The list goes on.
    No one adopts a pet with the intention of abandoning them. Staying alive, especially in the current economic conditions, got a lot harder a lot faster than anyone could anticipate.
    We need to have compassion for abandoned animals and the people who leave them. Especially if those people are shamed for having to spend money on food, electricity, and shelter that they would rather spend on their pets. People will only come forward for help if they feel safe doing so.
    Shame only perpetuates the cycle of suffering for animals and people.
    Rather than saying "Oh no! How terrible could a person be to abandon their pet!"
    We should say: "How can we help people and provide resources and education for those most vulnerable in our society?"
    Compassion is key, and it is utterly heartbreaking to have to surrender a pet.

    Rescue dogs are absolutely amazing and so rewarding (cats too!) Feeling like you've gained their trust just feels so good. My family got a dog about five years ago, he is a Siberian Husky who was surrendered and only six months old. We immediately knew something about him was different compared to other dogs. He didn't bark at all, not even when the other dogs did and he didn't know how to play with dog toys. He was shy and not all that affectionate. Once we took him home and he bonded to us we discovered another issue. He had extreme separation anxiety and tore up his gums when we left him alone in his crate for the first time. Coming home to a bloody mess and mamgled crate was just horrifying and we knew we had our work cut out for us. But with some training and a lot of hard work his separation anxiety eventually improved. Now we don't have to worry about leaving him home alone.

    My Phoebe was rescued from a kitten/puppy farm. She was 8 and not spayed at that time. I I gave her the run of the house, let her hide from me if she needed to, six months later she leapt up at the foot of my bed. She slowly moved up to my pillow. Now she is bold, comes out for pets from everyone who comes into the house, loves my neighborhood big dogs, and is totally different from when I first got her home.

    arnie's story really tugs at my heart strings. my family has 2 elderly dogs who both have a few issues - 1 is staying overnight for the 2nd night at the vet since he had to have a hernia surgery and he developed some tummy problems after. should be home tomorrow i hope. his surgery is expensive and we aren't exactly rich, but what we lack in money we make up for with the love we've been given by our old men. giving them up is legit not an option we would ever consider.

    Hurts my heart to see an obviously neglected or even abused animal still be really happy to meet new people.
    I mean, it is better than being terrified of everyone, but to think that despite being mistreated or ignored, the pet probably was still happy to see their old owner, because the pet is so sweet. :’

    Apple, the little Maltese mix, may not have been "given up", in the bad scenes anyway. Sometimes when an elderly person dies, their kids only have so much time to fly out & take care of everything, & I've known people who have done this... Not sure I could. Thank goodness my mom has 2 Chihuahuas! & I've vowed to take them again & again...

      My dog was abandoned by the kids of the owners after they passed away. They must have seen him in the house, because they sold it, so it means they went there to check the house out, left the dog, then sold the house and left my now dog in the house. It doesn't take too much time to take the animal at least to a shelter and drop them off with someone. I can tell from my now 9 year old baby (adopted at 8 in October 2022) that it has left scars on him. He's attached to me and my mum and after my mum had to go away for a week, he was a wreck, he is now fearful that we won't come back. No separation anxiety, so he doesn't whine when we go, but it's clear he won't survive being left again. It'd break him.
