"this is like a TOOL, but better" I totally agree with you!!
Tool fans would be pissed hearing us! lol
Opeth is like a Pink floyd metal
Nice way to encapsulate them :) Like it
if you loved that ending, check out their song Deliverance - best outro of all time!
on it...another commenter said the same :) And yes, it is a badass ending!
Here Mike's growls start deteriorating. He used to have a deeper one. Thanks for reaction. BTW with new guitarist Akesson and new drummer Axenrot (they are on the video) they wrote more technical but less heavier material. Axenrot was elected the best prog drummer 2 times. There technical possibilities were broaden with these guys. But you are right. Opeth is more about feelings, melancholy than technic although they are brilliant musicians.
Word! Look forward to more :) Thanks for the comment!
I know what you mean, but it hasn't got anything to do with "deterioating". He just decided to focus on clean vocals and started growling in a way that doesn't kill the voice. He can still do the old school growls we know and love.
I envy people that have only just discovered Opeth for the first time. I need a technology that can selectively erase memories from the brain. Although it might propose a problem with doing nothing else than just listening to Opeth and watching Game of Thrones over and over again then :D
I know the feeling and have the exact same sentiment...except for the last season of GoT :(
@@captainmorgan1978 I would enjoy erasing my memory of that as well...
@@notchjohnson2540 I think the writers would too along with 99.9% of the fans! lol
Awesome reaction. Next time you react to Opeth May I suggest Hessian Peel or the funeral portrait?
Yea buddy! Will write it down now...thanks for the comment!
Hessian Peel is good one, from my favorite Opeth album. Great reaction :)
Noted! :)
When I want my mind melted I'll listen to Dream Theater. When I want just some pure audio and compositional genius I listen to Opeth. I started with DT. It took me awhile to get snagged by Opeth, but now they are one of my favorites.
I think I am follow3ing in your steps Obi won.lol I am loving Opeth...Suggest if you have any good stuff since you have similar taste as me! Cheers!
@@captainmorgan1978 - Opeth is unique. I can't recommend anything similar to that. But sure... I can give you some good ones. All different. Jinjer - Pisces (Live Studio Session) - will get you some fans... it is a popular one to blow reactors minds. Jinjer then has other songs that are great if you like them. They are more Djent (prog offshoot with lots of broken stacatto rhythmic syncopated stuff) with a special vocalist. Instrumental wise you should definitely check out Animals as Leaders (CAFO is most popular)... it is Djent and prog. Then the band Nothing More - This is Ballast - I recommend the SiriusXM session rather than the official video. You get to see some cool stuff that is not obvious in the official video. Not in the same line as these others, but I heard them for the first time in the past couple of months and think they are pretty cool. That's a start. :)
@@captainmorgan1978 - Oh and if you want to laugh your ass off while still enjoying it.... Check out the Australian band Twelve Foot Ninjas. :)
@@futurewavecs that is a great start... Thanks much, you have my interest peaked for sure
@@captainmorgan1978 - I used to introduce my friends to new music. Now the closest thing I get to that experience is watching reactors. I posted some of the better stuff here and on your Periphery - Blood Eagle comment section. The things I've listed are some of the more interesting sonic fare I've seen out there lately.
God please listen to Deliverance, it's one of their more technical pieces but not devoid of feeling. And if you want a great ending, well my friend, this will for sure sate your liking for an amazing rhythmic ending. This song is riddled with solos, time changes and great passages. Quite a different vibe from the tracks you've listened to thus far. Also you must check out the studio version to truly appreciate all the nuances. Great video man!
Awesome. Thanks for the suggestions...look forward to checking that one out! Cheers!
@@captainmorgan1978 awesome! Don't expect like insane break neck speed or mindless shredding, but expect tasteful tricky jazzy metal infused drumming, dissonant chord use and riffing with odd shaping and great changes overall sonically
@@captainmorgan1978 Yees, indeed it was in the list I suggested in the other video among other songs like Windowpane, that has been requested a lot as I've seen in the comments. They (Harlequin Forest and Deliverence), have a similar ending, I can decide which is better being honest. And they are fucking incredible songs for sure. You should listen Burden and Windowpane to see the other face of Opeth too. Those kind of song set the style for the music they do nowadays, really really different, more proggy than deathy-darker. I really enjoy your reaction, you are really good at analyzing patrons in music compositions and I can see you feel it. Keep up that work :)
Edit: sorry for my bad english, I'm from Spain so I'm not really good with it.
@@AdrianCardona01051011 No worries my Spanish brother :) I have a bandmember here in Korea who is from Madrid. I went there a few years ago...loved it, especially Malaga.
Windowpane is a for sure checkout. Thanks for the compliments! Cheers with an Estrella? lol
Why does no one mention serenity painted death or white cluster. Both are probably the most shredderific songs they've done.
I think you would really enjoy Deliverence by Opeth but not live
You should also check out
Ne Obliviscaris - and plague flowers the kaleidoscope live like other comments have asked for it has great sound quality
Yep, that is next on the list, maybe by Fri...keep an eye out!
You love Opeth!
Starting to :)
Great songs. It's hard to go wrong with Opeth :) To hear Akerfeldt's growls at his peak, check out Bloodbath - Eaten (live). It's pure death metal, no prog at all, though.
I like both, even if I have a lean towards one...thanks for the suggestion
Mikael has the best death growls in my opinion and I love his warm guitar tone and distinct style when he plays guitar solos. Happy Birthday Mr Akerfeldt 🤘🤘🤘 . Thanks man for reacting to my two favorite Opeth songs. Cheers from Canada
4:55 - that's why it's called progressive metal.
What would you label Tool then? :)
Great reaction!! Awesome you did both! Opeth’s technicality side is definitely more subtle, with an emphasis on feeling. BTW Opeth and Dream Theater are my top 2 bands. Like them both equally for different reasons.
I agree on the growls. I’ve grown to appreciate the growling/screaming of BTBAM, but definitely prefer Mikael Akerfeldt’s growls all day. Didn’t take me long to like his growling.
Glad you liked it and thanks for the comment! Cheers...
For a more "proggy" approach and atypical song structure go for "The Lotus Eater". I recommend the studio version over the live Albert hall one because theres a technical problem with the guitar at some point and messes with the flow of the song.
I think it is great they can do both proggy and heavy... Looking forward to hearing it.
FOREST METAL
Haha
Just stumbled to your channel and enjoy the insight and commentary on these reactions. You've got a sub from me.
You've received some great suggestions from Opeths first seven albums which are a lot of people's preference (mine included). I've only seen one song suggested from their latest 3 albums, that being Will O The Wisp, which is a great song, but in the same vein as the Damnation album suggestions.
If you're wanting to hear their newer more 70s prog rock sound I'd suggest Strange Brew or Sorceress.
In any case, keep it up!
Thanks alot Chris, appreciate the thoughts. I can't wait to dive into Opeth more so please keep those suggestions coming. I am in a semester now so the reacts come 1 time a week but wen break comes in the winter it will take off... Thanks again!
Akerfeldt sure can shred.. just listen to the solo in The Grand Conjuration. May be a reaction? ;)
You make it tempting lol... I will check it out! Thanks for the comment!
@@captainmorgan1978 make sure you react to the studio version! The mix on the live versions (specially drums) are trash.
@@moonfool4042 noted! Thanks.
@@captainmorgan1978 Be careful tho, the official music video version has half the song cut out. The full song is around 10 minutes long.
@@kevinbartolen5881 got it. Thanks!
I’m a massive Tool fan (Opeth as well) but I understand your critiques of them. Honestly, neither band were easy to digest when I first listened to them and to this day I must be in a specific mood to listen to Tool. I can listen to Opeth all day though, haha.
Also, big fan of Dream Theater too. Opeth and DT might both be prog metal but I don’t often compare them as they try to do pretty different things. I personally think DT is more comparable to Symphony X.
Haha yes you get it... If you watch my other videos I have made this comparison as well... I really think Haken is the closest to DT in terms of prog... Cheers!
Opeth wasn't as progressive back then as they are now. They're progressive now, they were melodic death metal.
Have you done Heir Apparent. That's a great Opeth song! And has some cool time signatures and polyrhythmic stuff. And its heavy as f**k 😁
Hopefully get to that one...I like a mix of heavy and melodic :)
@@captainmorgan1978 Face of Melinda is actually one which is 80% melodic and 20% heavy like you mentioned. And the heavy part is actually like a jazzy chord thing that shouldn't be heavy when you see the chords. It's interesting!
Benighted is also a huge favourite of mine. I'm learning it on guitar at the moment. All acoustic finger picking. Sounds medieval
@@LukeWatts85 Alot have asked for Face so that will happen too at some point :0
You just answered my question why i Don't seem to get into DT, well other than their mellow stuff. I like DTs mellow stuff.
gonna have to remind me how I answered your question?lol
you gotta check will o the wisp
completely different style
would love to watch your reaction
That's an Opeth song name? Thanks for the comment
@@captainmorgan1978 Yes it is
unpredictability is boss
"tool 2.0" xD
haha don't get me wrong, Tool is sick when they do it right but they are pretty repetitive with their licks...
@@captainmorgan1978 I like both bands, tool makes me want mushrooms to listen to. Lol
but I like opeth more for sure, heavier, transitions, all the vocals ect.
you need to check something different by them, check out "slither" or "strange brew" both from albums you haven't heard anything from (:
@@deminybs Nice thanks for the suggestions...better to put those with links in the Community Tab thread and I will more likely get to them...cheers!
Hey!! i like Dream Theater
but...
not james labrie voice lol sound like a very drunk man singing
Yea fair enough... Many DT fans complain about him as well... 😊
yea the music is dope af
btw really love haken stream one of my fav haken song
@@krytoderp6920 nice need to check out more of them too
Its such a shame you did the live version for the moor. It has sooo many layers and such beautiful acoustic guitar tones that can't be recreated live
Yea a few others have said as much...too late. :)
@@captainmorgan1978 might be worth checking out in your own time if you feel like it. Its an amazing intro track to an amazing album. Glad to see you were able to enjoy the live version though
@@alecvanderheyden3463 Yea I already have many time..I like parts of the studio verion better and some of the raw live parts better.. :)
🇸🇪🤟🏻
Mikeal is a pretty good guitar player but Fredrick åkkeson who is the other guitarist is one of the best guitarists in Sweden.
Nice guess I have to look him up now... Thanks!
@@captainmorgan1978 yea check out his heir apparent solo, it's pretty crazy
I don't agree, most people can sing but most people cannot growl, at least not good. I agree with you that most growls sounds bad but there are exceptions, like M.A and Devin Townsend. To say these two aren't talented is like swearing in church :)
Thanks for the comment. Don't remember saying they were bad? I actually said Devin and Mikael I didn't mind, BTBM I didn't LIKE...it is a preference thing.
@@captainmorgan1978 No you didn't, you were talking generally about growling taking less talent (comparing with dancing).
@@u11113901 I wasn't trying to say it wasn't talented, I have no idea the talent it takes to do growling...what I meant to say, if it wasn't clear, was that I don't prefer it... :)
@@captainmorgan1978 ok, got you :)
Windowpane my guy! Trust me on this, it's more your thing i can tell
Oh and deliverance for a heavier and more progressive craft
If your gna talk all over the song then dude 😐
You know this is a reaction channel right?
Did this herb just compare tool to opeth?
Opeth is their on kind of genre to comapre them too any other artist is slander
@@jamesblair5535 haha that's comical
