I love that song, but then again, I'm biased since I love Opeth both old and new. Also glad I didn't mess up the link :) I believe you got that from my "link dump" I did on the community tab that time you told me that's where you look for stuff to react to.
@@captainmorgan1978 Still Life is the first album I ever heard from Opeth when I was 9 years old. My uncle gave me the cd and was like "see what you think of this!" So I am totally biased towards that era of Opeth... I think you're a lot more objective. I do enjoy Ghost Reveries too though.

a couple comments about this song, my favorite from still life, which is my favorite opeth album: when you said it sounds like it came in from another song . . . yes, this is a concept album where each song is a chapter of the story; serenity painted death follows face of melinda. my second comment is about the transition you didn't like so much. what is happening in the story is the main character has just witnessed his one true love, the only thing in life he cares about, murdered by the council of the cross. the lyrics: "saw her fading, blank stare into me; clenched fist from the beautiful pain." at this point you called it a "superhero lead", which is more accurate than you realize. the calm part is the immediate sadness and processing of her death and the transition you didn't care for is the turning from sadness to blind rage in the blink of an eye as the "superhero" lashes out in vengeance at her murderers. the lyrics (growling): "darkness reared its head, tearing within the reeling haze, took control, claiming my flesh, piercing rage, perfect tantrum; each and every one would die at my hand, choking in warm ponds of blood; at last, weak and torn, i went down, drained from strength, flickering breath." then mikael unleashes probably his best solo on any opeth album, representing the aftermath of a 1 vs the entirety of the council of the cross fight in which the superhero had no chance of winning, and they take him away for his (spoiler alert) execution, which is the final song of the album, white cluster. when you describe the transition as "not clean", that is the intention of the transition; to represent a drastic swing of human emotion from serenity to uncontrollable rage, which could be perfectly described as "not clean". this album is something that can not be fully grasped in a first listen, especially when broken up and listened to in random order. the beauty of this album is taking it in as one story. i would recommend listening to the entire album, probably with lyrics handy, from start to finish, and probably when you have an hour or so to yourself. sorry for the long post, but i have such a deep love for this album and really want everyone to fully understand and appreciate it's magnificence.
This is one of my favorite Opeth songs, but in general I think new Opeth is better than old Opeth. Their song writing has evolved a lot over the years. Pale Communion and In Cauda Venenum are probably their best albums. I would love to see a reaction to the song Eternal Rains Will Come from Pale Communion.
@@captainmorgan1978 There are dozens of us! I also had a hard time accepting Opeth abandoning their prog death style (if it can even be called that). I've been listening to them since the late 90s so I obviously enjoy both eras. I just think their song writing and musicianship has improved a lot.
That weird guitar part(Course) always makes me freak out. It's one of the most indistinguishable things I've ever heard. It inspires me as a composer, because it rattles my brain into confusion and happiness. It was the last track I ever heard on the album and after finally hearing the album in the intended song order, it blew me away so much that, until this day, Still Life is still my absolute favourite album by Opeth.
@@captainmorgan1978 Based on my experience as a Musicologist, Opeth are rather good at being very comfortable with how they pick obvious things to throw into their songs. This song is actually one of their most absolutely bizarre. The fact that you could enjoy it in any capacity means you can deal with anything Opeth will throw at you.
@Simon BeeHYPE I never said it was the last track on the album. It was the last song I heard from the album. This was before you could get full albums from torrents.
You said you love Akerfeldts voice...there is no other song this is more present and refined than on the album version: BENIGHTED (this is one of their softest one, give it a try, not one single growl...promised).
Benighted is to Opeth, what Nothing Else Matters is to Metallica (don't kill me for that comparison plzz... ;) ruclips.net/video/cJ9rbJcPyTA/видео.html
Yay, Opeth, and from the last album of their first era. And there's contention between Opeth fans about Opeths older vs newer style which I guess comes with the territory. I like all three eras but I'm currently holding up the Blackwater Park-Watershed era as well as their "new" era of their last 4 albums above the first four albums (I started to listen to Opeth with Morningrise). I've followed how they changed their style (or rather evolved since it's ALL still distinctly Opeth, they've just changed instrumentation and vocals and become better players and grown as musicians and writers). I'd be fine with you just picking random songs off their latest 4 albums (Heritage, Pale Community, Sorceress and esp. In Cauda Venenum) that you haven't checked out yet. I need to check out which songs you've already done to find some pearls that are worth listening and reacting to of their newer stuff. :)
Interesting, I wouldn't say Still Life closed their early era sound as I think Blackwater Park is very stylistically similar. There's really nothing like their first two albums (Orchid and Morningrise), and the shift they took with My Arms Your Hearse set the tone for their next few albums, maybe even including Damnation, though that one kind of stands on its own. Then there's Deliverance, which is my least favorite album, but Ghost Reveries has a lot of connective tissue to it but is also a vast improvement in composition. I always felt these albums strived maybe too much for ultra heavy dissonant chord patterns rather than the layered melodic passages of their early work. That era is closed out by Watershed (a masterpiece), which also takes a diversion largely due to the lineup changes. And then you have the new era of Opeth.
This was the song where I asked a friend in high school - "That sounds awesome, what is that?". :D The "newer" Opeth style was generally shit for myself and a lot of people until this newest album which made Opeth great again. No it's not the growling that was missing. Damnation had no growling and is a fantastic album. Everything after "Watershed" from 2008 until 2019 - "In Cauda Venenum" felt like uninspired 70-s prog and was largely unremarkable for me, with some exceptions ofc. "Face in the snow" is fantastic for example. In Cauda Venenum is great though. :)
"DAMNATION ALBUM" - clean vocals, non heavy songs. That's also "Old Opeth". After that you can check out the random proggy shit and the great newest album, which as I said previously is the first album since Watershed that I loved (so in over 10 years haha).

It's similar to where he's talking in the other video about Symphony X's "Egypt" being his favorite song, yet that song is solidly in the second act of V's story. I think with these kind of reaction channels, you just have to accept that the larger picture of a concept album just isn't that important because that's not how the channels work. a couple comments about this song, my favorite from still life, which is my favorite opeth album: when you said it sounds like it came in from another song . . . yes, this is a concept album where each song is a chapter of the story; serenity painted death follows face of melinda.
my second comment is about the transition you didn't like so much. what is happening in the story is the main character has just witnessed his one true love, the only thing in life he cares about, murdered by the council of the cross. the lyrics: "saw her fading, blank stare into me; clenched fist from the beautiful pain." at this point you called it a "superhero lead", which is more accurate than you realize. the calm part is the immediate sadness and processing of her death and the transition you didn't care for is the turning from sadness to blind rage in the blink of an eye as the "superhero" lashes out in vengeance at her murderers. the lyrics (growling): "darkness reared its head, tearing within the reeling haze, took control, claiming my flesh, piercing rage, perfect tantrum; each and every one would die at my hand, choking in warm ponds of blood; at last, weak and torn, i went down, drained from strength, flickering breath." then mikael unleashes probably his best solo on any opeth album, representing the aftermath of a 1 vs the entirety of the council of the cross fight in which the superhero had no chance of winning, and they take him away for his (spoiler alert) execution, which is the final song of the album, white cluster. when you describe the transition as "not clean", that is the intention of the transition; to represent a drastic swing of human emotion from serenity to uncontrollable rage, which could be perfectly described as "not clean".
this album is something that can not be fully grasped in a first listen, especially when broken up and listened to in random order. the beauty of this album is taking it in as one story. i would recommend listening to the entire album, probably with lyrics handy, from start to finish, and probably when you have an hour or so to yourself. sorry for the long post, but i have such a deep love for this album and really want everyone to fully understand and appreciate it's magnificence.
