NO EXCUSES is about lead singer Layne Staley’s battle to overcome his heroin addiction. Another theme is Jerry’s unstable relationship with Layne as well as Jerry coming to Layne’s aide even if they grow apart. The band became inactive two years later when Layne's addiction became too troublesome.
The lyrics: You find me sittin' by myself / No excuses, then I know -- In Layne’s case, he lost the closeness he had with his bandmates before, and doesn’t have anyone else to take their places. He knows that it’s his own fault and he did it to himself. Also, during the time leading up to his death, it was noted that he would frequent a bar near his condo, and pass out in a corner by himself.
The lyrics: Every day it's somethin' / Hits me all so cold -- I believe this line is a reference to the cold sweats one experiences from the beginning of withdrawal, furthermore I believe he is saying everyday hardship makes him want to relapse because the challenges of daily life are too much.
The lyrics: Leave our rain and cold, trade for warm sunshine -- Jerry wants Layne to detox, trading his rain (addiction) for sunshine (sobriety). Though, it could be directed at any addict.
The lyrics: You, my friend, I will defend / And if we change, well, I'll love you anyway -- The final verse seems to come to a resolve in stating that Jerry will "defend" Staley and that, should they grow further apart, he will "love Layne anyway."
Jerry's mother and grandmother had died within 5 months of each other and within the year, Jerry had lost his family, his house and everything he knew. When he met Layne, Jerry was coming out of a situation where his entire world had just blown up. Jerry saw Layne perform at the Tacoma Little Theater just as Jerry was about to blow town. The second Layne opened his mouth and sang Jerry immediately knew he wanted to be in a band with Layne. They met personally at a house party and Layne learned of Jerry's situation of no home, no family in the area (his parents divorced when he was young, his dad lives in Oklahoma). Jerry had little money left. Layne (drunkenly) offered Jerry a place to live (moving in with Layne at the 50-room rehearsal hall called the Music Bank that Layne lived/worked in), Layne got Jerry a job there. Layne gave him food, clothes, money. Layne got Jerry the guitars and gear he needed. Jerry was looking to put a band together and Layne gave him the number to drummer Sean Kinney's girlfriend who happened to be Mike Starr's sister. Mike Starr was the original bass player before Mike Inez came in the middle of the Dirt tour. Starr's last show was Rock in Rio festival on January 22, 1993. The band told Inez to meet them in London in February 1993 for the rest of the tour and Inez has been with AIC ever since.
Christmas 1987 was the first Christmas for Jerry since his mother and grandmother died, Layne invited Jerry to spend Christmas 87 with his stepdad, mom, and siblings.
Layne encouraged Jerry to sing more, after all, they were Jerry's lyrics he should sing them. Vice-versa, Jerry encouraged Layne to play the guitar which is how you get Layne playing guitar on HATE TO FEEL and ANGRY CHAIR as well as I DON'T KNOW ANYTHING on the Mad Season Above album. Jerry encouraged him on the guitar and was proud that Layne grew as a guitarist. Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine taught Layne more chords than ANGRY CHAIR and HATE TO FEEL.
The friendship between Jerry and Layne was unbreakable. Jerry NEVER once thought of replacing Layne as the singer while Layne was still alive. He always wanted Layne to sing whenever he had AIC do something. If there were ever cosmic soulmates ... Layne and Jerry would be it. And by that I mean, they were Sympatico with each other. The way they sang together was a perfect pitch where two voices make one. What you hear and see between Jerry and Layne was a genuine friendship. They looked after each other. When one had problems with a song, the other picked up the slack. They were a team.
Jerry was doing a solo concert in Charlotte, NC when he heard that Layne was found two weeks after he died and Jerry was trying to get through the concert and crying. He did shows between the time he found out about Layne until Layne's funeral because if he had taken a break then, he didn't think he'd want to continue anything later after the mourning period.
Alice In Chains was a band, but they were also a family. They had internal issues just like any family. When Layne died, it was like losing a loved one, a family member, you don't think of the fights you had with the person who died. You defend their memory. There is a reason Jerry wrote NO EXCUSES about Layne and the line "You, my friend, I will defend / And if we change, well, I'll love you anyway."

“Jerry really loved Layne [Staley]. They had a bond I haven't seen before,” Jerry’s former manager Bill Siddons, April 19, 2002 (the day Layne was found two weeks after he died).
The song was well-received by music critics and was a charting success, becoming the first Alice in Chains song to reach No. 1 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, spending a total of 26 weeks on the chart. It has gone on to become one of the band's most popular songs. The song was included on the compilation albums Nothing Safe: Best of the Box (1999), Music Bank (1999), Greatest Hits (2001), and The Essential Alice in Chains (2006). Alice In Chains performed an acoustic version of NO EXCUSES for its appearance on MTV Unplugged in 1996, which marked the last time they performed the song with Layne, and that version was included on the band's Unplugged live album and home video release.
Sean Kinney and Dave Krusen (Pearl Jam Ten drummer) are my two 90's giants.
I was 15 and a freshman in high school (91/92) when the grunge thing took off.
I still have tricks in the bag inspired by Dave and Sean.

Inez left Ozzy to join AIC. He was playing with Ozzy at the time he got the call, when they were giving Starr is exit. Ozzy told Inez (paraphrasing) “if you don’t go, we are going to have to take you to the hospital to remove my foot from you ass!” Ozzy recognized the massive talents of the members of AIC & opportunity it would propose. Inez has been with AIC every since……good move!
Yeah but did Starr and Inez really write the most iconic and more melodic bass lines of Alice in Chains? I would have to guess that Jerry wrote most of the music including the bass lines.
@@ComaAlphano idea- if I had to guess Inez probably had more creative ideas & input than Starr. Even if Jerry wrote them….gotta have someone talented enough to play them……Inez was/is that man.
@@danabomb100 I mean yeah, but like Would?, I don't think Starr wrote that. And No Excuses or Rotten Apple. I don't think Inez wrote those.
It has been 30-whatever years and I STILL listen to Dirt fairly regularly. It’s such a dark son, but the groove on Junkhead gets me every time!
Same Junkhead single-handedly got me to want to play the drums, I go to guitar center just to practice for 30 minutes bc I don’t have enough for a drum set 😂

Glad to see you give Sean Kinney some love. His playing on No Excuses totally reminds me of Carter Beauford's style of playing.
This is THE song that made me recognize Sean Kinney's talent. That drum intro was one of a very few drum lines from my generation that I can remember thinking, "Neil Peart would love what he did here..."
Sean plays to the song and he does it perfectly. Bringing the energy up or down. Knowing when to push and when to drag. That's what makes the greatest drummers. Dirt is a fucking masterpiece and his drumming on it is absolutely perfect.

Love AIC. Never got a chance to see them live since Lane didn't tour as much as we all would have liked. I did see Jerry Cantrell open for Metallica right after his solo album with Cut You In came out. He played a couple chains songs which was amazing 🤙
I think a lot of the no crash off the Toms in the 2nd verse is that it’s the brilliance of Kinney knowing it’s an acoustic drumming show and knowing when to use the cymbals correctly as he does in the chorus
If I recall correctly, Metallica were actually in the audience and Mike Inez wrote that on his bass after seeing them in there. That's also why they play the Enter Sandman riff at one point in the show.
He plays a bongo in this and other live versions, but originally he used an 8 inch tom. You can see it in some other live versions, too.
Thank you. I have listened many times to "No excuses" and have always been taken aback by the percussion, which carries the whole song. The decoration (high hats, bongos etc), then increased emphasis before the chorus, like making a statement. The whole emotion and mood changes, whereas the singing remains somewhat monotonous. An inverted song when it comes to the roles the instruments (including the voice) usually play in a song. There are other songs where the drummer pushes the song, like Sound Garden's "Burden in my hand", and overall the 90s were the great return of the drummer, but no song is like this. I have thought about that again today, searched for the name of the drummer and wanted to check out whether there is someone out there who is as enthusiastic about it as I am. Found it, so again, thanks 🙂.
Other than that, I'm 54, so I went into teenage years in the early 80s, through older peers listened to records from bands like Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, JJ Cale, even Kiss, and yes, the Beatles (Lennon got killed in 80 and suddenly Beatles music was around so you lap it up as an 11 years old, and I still like them) but also bands that became big in the 80s like U2, Simply Red, The Police, Simple Minds. The rythm machines came up during the 80s and had their effect, and yes, the smurf sounding hard rock bands. So, in a nutshell, I myself never liked the term Grunge, for someone like me it was just the return to what a rock band and it's music was supposed to be. Not that I hated 80s music, it was just good to see that down to earth mood come back, and end it with what I call bombastic rock.
Sean is the rock of Alice in Chains. So solid, you forget he's there until he's gone, and suddenly you find yourself up to your knees in sludge.

My fav band of all time, the best time to grow up in music. You cannot replace Layne EVER! Sean could build up any groove with his creativity and make it so incredible. The last unique and most important "scene" ever and i will never change my mind. No one could not like these guys. Their ability [every one of those guys building music together] to put their emotions into the music was so mature for a bunch of young guys. They will always have my heart. ❤ I agree, there is NO harmony to compare to those two. Layne was otherworldly.

To your point regarding 'pre-grunge', before there was grunge there was also punk, specifically there was Bill Stevenson. from Black Flag and Descendants. Nomeansno and Victims Family had great drums too, as did Fugazi.
Facelift was the bridge between metal and grunge. Layne was in a hair band before Alice. That album was mostly hard metal with grunge tendencies, fantastic.
Ive always said this about Sean. Same thing about Troy Lucketta from Tesla totally underrated.

Alice in chains is timeless, still today, last night in fact I saw AIC. Shawn is an amazing drummer. Very complex and he makes it look easy, flawlessly. ❤️
Mike Inez came from Ozzy, has been with AIC since 1993 and still to this day.

It is uncanny how similar our tastes are in music. Both drummers. Absolutely uncanny. You> have finished about 4 of my thoughts in this video. I hated Pearl Jam, I can't stand them, absolutely no love for Nirvana. The most underrated band in history. Love Dave grohl. I'll never forget Nevermind came out on my birthday just after graduating high school and I went straight to the music store, back when it was so exciting to get in the store and look for everything, and I bought it, put it in my tape deck and about threw up. One of the worst albums ever. I couldn't stand hair metal, absolutely lame but Tommy Lee is the one who inspired me to play drums now for 36 years. He was a God to me. Respect. Sean Kinney is the man. I've loved AIC since day one. Saw them at Clash of the Titans in 91! They weren't known much and definitely not loved yet by most.

I am firmly in belief that Jerry wrote the bass line for this and a few others.
One of Pearl Jam's previous drummers, Dave Abbruzzese, has a very similar style.
Miles and Mark from Alterbridge are probably the closest harmony duo these days
When I think of the actual "grunge" sound, I think AIC was the epitome of the word at least. Soundgarden is the least grunge. They were the most diverse. And they are my two favorite bands. The one that sounded the most like the word sounds and the one that actually diversified the word. Nirvana is pretty good. I like Pearl Jam's early stuff. And I know it's heresy, but I think STP could do a lot of things that would be considered grunge but was also able to diversify and create their own sound too.
Mike Inez never left AIC ...he came from Ozzy's band and replaced Mike Starr (rip)

I watched the Nirvana Unplugged and the drums are too loud. Sean plays them at the right volume here, which I’d guess is also a skill that no one realizes the importance of. So good and agree with all he’s criminally underrated.
Dave Grohl just isn't wired to play drums quiet. There are multiple stories about how both Mtv producers and Kurt weren't happy with his volume for the Unplugged show to the point they had to get him Hotrod sticks to play. Sean has much more dynamic in his playing and it fitted perfectly in the Aic Unplugged.

That's true, but what I didn't articulate well is that those bands are culturally irrelevant.
@@JunkdrummerTV Mass culture wise you're right of course but I'd argue that there's as much music being written today that will be being listened to in a hundred years as was written in the 90s and that's cultural relevance for sure of a more slow burning type.
Two exceptions come to mind: Wardruna and to a lesser extent Deftones. Wardruna are culturally relevant by any standard.

Yeah, grunge saved us from hell. I remember it really started with Guns N Roses, or at least that's when I noticed something new was happening. That was the very beginning of bands saving us from the horribleness of hard rock (which had run its course) and metal hair bands, which was mostly elevator music.

A drummer that played with a great group of musicians, occasionally played outside the bands genre…And struggled with timing throughout his career. A cymbal heavy mediocre drummer that never really did anything significant or important on the instrument.
I don't understand how someone can claim to be a rock fan and appreciate music yet put down one type of music.....Nothing wrong with hair bands and let me tell you, before AIC became what they are known for, these guys were a hair band....it's ridiculous how judgmental some rock fans are. And you have it backwards man ....Mike left Ozzy to be with AIC, not the other way around...and the last type of rock that was good was early 2000 rock....

Beside the obvious lack of depth and musicianship, hair metal lacked authenticity and especially originality. No creativity , just role play. The bands all looked the same, sounded the same. and never swerved from the same thoughtless party theme lyrically. It was boring to the point that it became almost painful to listen to. Grunge didn’t kill hair metal. It was the creator of its own demise. It was analogous to ritual seppuku.
