One doesn't have to go to the top of the engine for that "in case you don't have an impact wrench" piece of advice. If you look....right behind the head of that bolt you wanna remove is another structure. It looks like a really thick washer with 2 flat sides. You grab on to the flat sides with an adjustable. Doing that will keep the the shaft from turning ...and at the same time you undo the bolt with your socket. That flat sided "washer" is called a "D" something or other. Hope this helps. For me it worked great. My joy quickly dissipated when the clutch didn't slide right off like in this vid. Well it's been on there since I bought the tractor in 2001(gt235) so it's is seized on there. Off to the repair shop it goes...couldnt pry it off. At least down here in TN they will accept the new clutch I purchased from Amazon w/o a hassle.
Hey, I'm a mom of an almost 14-year-old and I am trying to teach my son how to work on our John Deere X500 and I really appreciate this video because we were having a heckuva time trying to get the bolt off the clutch until we watched your video.
That is great. Love that you are teaching him. Can’t rely on dads these days. I just learned by doing.
The X500 is a damn fine mower, good choice.
While I have achieved 'man status' and own an impact wrench (funny comment, btw), the info about coming in from the top was great, Many will appreciate that. Cheers
Haha Glad you appreciated it. Not everyone enjoys my comments.
Coming in from the top saved my bacon on torquing the new clutch on my Craftsman.
@@MowerMike Also props on the man status. I just recently achieved it myself with the impact wrench. Thank God for the battery powered impact wrenches!
EXCELLENT VIDEO! You save me a 5 week wait at my local small engine reapir shop and $$$. THANKS!!!
Wow very cool. Thanks for the comment glad it helped.
Thanks for keeping it short but detailed. Its definitely not as hard as I thought it would be!
Glad to help!
Thanks for the tip on the bolt on the top of the engine. I have a Craftsman DYT 4000, but my clutch doesn't have a D-spacer so I was having trouble torquing it until this video. I recommend everyone use caution as to not loosen the top bolt, but I figured it was torqued much higher than the 50 ft lbs of my clutch.
Glad you got it worked out!
Thanks for the video just did a rebuild on my mower. 20 years old still running good
Sweet, if you take care of them she will run forever
Nice straight forward video. Thanks. I wish everybody did them this way.
I appreciate that. I started doing these because I couldn’t stand the 45 minutes or bs on mower videos just to find what ya need.
I have a JD LX178 and wanted to see what is needed to remove the PTO clutch and your video helped me and I thank you ! Easy to do !! 💢
I gotcha!
Just picked up an X360 that needed a new PTO Clutch. Saw this video and figured, this will be an easy flip. Then I saw the prior owner snapped the bolt. Ug.
That is no good. I suggest getting some left handed drill bits and going at it
Thanks mower Mike, I’m 62 and still haven’t made it to man status with the impact tools so thanks for the pointer, I was on my way but of course gotta go buy another socket! Appreciate the video great job
Yep never have the right socket size! Glad you enjoyed it
Our L130 has the Koehler 23 HP engine. Getting to the crankshaft nut on the top required us to remove the cover around the top of the engine before we could remove the flywheel cover. Once there the PTO clutch bolt would still not break free. We bound the flywheel with a wood block to break the bolt free. Also, the anchor strap provided in the kit did not align with the mounting bolt hole on the frame. We used the original strap. Easier to put this on after the new clutch is installed.
Sounds like you need to invest in a impact wrench.
@@MowerMike
Hi Mike, we tried that - no bueno.
Nice video, I'm doing my L120 now. I took the hood off and put my floor jack under the muffler guard. Worked just fine..
Just be carful that it doesn’t bend up and rub against the muffler
Thanks for the tip on loosening the crank bolt without an impact.
Glad to help
Hey MM, great video, I first watched your video of how to replace the transmission belt. Followed along (without an impact wrench) and did not counter turn with bolt on top of motor (probably should have). I held the top spindle of the clutch with a pair of channel locks. Removed the bolt under the clutch. But the big difference with my result is the whole spindle that holds the clutch came out. It has a slotted grove, so it only went back on one way. Put it all back together. (Did not put deck back on yet) went to test it, Pulled the PTO engage switch and nothing. My whole housing it turning. The top part of the clutch where the wire goes in is turning with the portion below that connects with belt. (Only turns so far until it hits the belt guards). I did not have to remove the belt guards because the whole spindle came down, so was able to get transmission belt on and push the assembly back up. Any idea on why mine came apart differently when removing the bottom nut? And what I might have done wrong putting back together? Thanks for your help. I appreciate your sense of humor.
Ok so the top pulley closest to the engine is for the drive belt. That will always turn unless you put the parking brake on which loosens up the belt.
The bottom pulley is the PTO and should only come on when you pull the blade switch.
The shaft it bolts to has a groove on it and a square key (rectangle piece of metal) goes in it to keep the PTO on it. Maybe that fell out? Let me know if any of this helps
@@MowerMike Hi Mike. Makes sense. I took apart and made sure keys were there and lining up. Seems to all be ok. Got it to engage and the mower Lully at the bottom spins when engaged with PTO switch. The piece right above it where the wire plugs is not in a stationary position. It is turning too as far as it can until the magnet/coil hits the guard. Maybe it’s supposed to be move like that but? I made a quick video of it so you could see but not sure how to share the video so you can see it. Thanks, Dan
@@danculhane7959 I think I know your issue. There is a notch cut into the bottom flange of that PTO and a bar bolts to the bottom of the frame and fits into that little notch. It is the bar I remove over the PTO in the video. Good luck
@@MowerMike yup!!! That’s exactly what I missed! THANK YOU! I appreciate the advice! Great videos by the way:-)
@@danculhane7959 Glad you got it figured out. That is a weird bar unique to the cub cadet.
That’s pretty simple. I like your comments on being young and not having an impact. I’m 71 now and I do have one. Actually 4, but when I was young I did everything with very basic hand tools and a 1 1/2 ton bottle jack.
If it can be done with gasoline, electrons, compressed air or nuclear power, I’m in. Otherwise not so much.
Haha what were you running with nuclear power?
@@MowerMike
My time machine. You may have seen it in the movies.
Thank you so much for this video. I changed out the clutch today. The deck engages and runs for a couple minutes while mowing and tries to die. The battery died, and I have to jump it everytime. I shut off the pto while it bogs down, let it idle for a minute and it runs for a little bit. Willits not run off the alternator only or does the battery need to be changed out. Thank you in advance, for any response...
I would remove the deck and check all the pullies by hand on the deck and under the mower to see if you have any restrictions. If they all turn free then I would make sure the carb is clean and then if it still is bogging down check compression. That engine maybe just wore out.
Good luck I know it can be frustrating
Thank you! I did not have a ratchet gun so the tip to manually get the clutch pulley off was a help. Didn’t have the right socket but was able to hold in place with a screwdriver and a friend.
Awsome glad I could help
@@MowerMike Great tip for no impact drill !!! Thanks!!
Thanks for making the video. I just replaced the ignition switch, PTO switch, solenoid, & starter. Every time I pull that PTO switch I blow my 20 amp fuse. Going to replace the clutch and those wires next I guess!
I suggest checking your wiring first, there is probably a short in your wiring or a connection causing it to blow.
@@MowerMike that’s what I think it is too. Two of the wires going to the clutch look burned & I can see bare wire. I bought a clutch that comes with a new wiring harness for $200. Can’t complain since the mower was free!
Replaced the clutch and the blades would partially engage, but then blow the fuse. Replaced the wiring harness & it works as it should again. I cut off the wires that hook to the back axel and seat & everything still works.. except that backup and seat sensor that used to cut the blades off.
I usually have to have the choke all the way on for the mower to run right. I replaced the carb with a brand new one. When the mower is hot I can run it wide open with no choke & it’s good to go. Even starts back up easily. When it’s cold I have to start by spraying starting fluid in the intake or it won’t start regardless of what I do with the choke. If it’s not one thing it’s another, but at least I’m getting the grass cut!
@@michaelhowell8990 Check the fuel pump vacuum line and make sure there are no intake leaks. You can spray carb fluid around the intake when it runs, if it bogs down you know you have a leak. I have a great video on the fuel pump. This all assumes your carb is clean. Some of those Amazon carbs from China are junk and don’t work right
Thanks Mike. Exactly what I needed. How to get the bolt off explanation really helped!
Glad to help
Helpful and best of all… short. Thanks. Subscribed.
Welcome aboard, strap in it could get weird.
I just recently picked up a white gt2150 that has an electronic pto. The tractor is exhibiting a no crank no start. I believe the key switch is good and I’ve tested the starter solenoid and it is good. I got it running by putting 12v directly to the starter. When the tractor is running the blades are always engaged no matter the position of the switch. I checked the resistance of the switch and it tested good. Wiring to the clutch is good too. Do you think that something is wrong with the clutch on the electrical side causing the tractor to not crank due to a safety feature?
Sounds like your switch is always on. I would put a new switch on it. Yes if the PTO is on the mower probably won’t crank.
Thanks for this info,
I just replaced my drive belt, but now clutch pedal, and brake linkage locked
Glad to help. Never heard of that one sounds like it is time to get a big flat head screw driver and pry it open.
Hey mower Mike thanks for the video. I’ve got a L120 and about to replace the sump gasket. Now I know how to take the couch off before pulling the motor off.
Do you mean the gasket around the base of the crankshaft on the bottom of the motor? Glad the video helped!
1:20 "Maybe you're younger and don't quite have the man status to have an impact wrench" HAHA, MADE MY DAY!!!!!
Glad someone appreciates my tool humor haha.
Damn! Boss Hog man. I busted knuckles trying to go underneath w/o an impact. Wow. Thanks
Glad it helped, those PTOs can be a PIA
Mike, once I take the deck out from under the tractor and get down under there what do I need to do to see if the clutch is messed up or not working properly? How to check it out? My blades have started up and then stopped shortly after a few times now. And now I cannot get the blades to turn/start at all. Also there are new spindles and pulley's and belt is good. Fuse is good, battery is new, selenoid is new, safety switches have either been eliminated or replaced with new ones.....
I would loosen the belt take it off a spindle and hand work all the pullies and spindles. See if anything feels rough and is a bad baring. I doubt it is the actual PTO. Also make sure the belt is tight, it may need a fresh tensioner spring
Thanks for the video, might be replacing one on my L120. The fuses keep blowing when the PTO is engaged. Look for broken wires, but looks like the clutch is not working correctly causing power surge blowing the fuse. Well that is my guess. Thanks for the video.
Sure thing, glad it helped. There are some PTO test video out there that may help but that is above my head. Good luck
Flywheel tip saved me today.. Thanks a million.
Glad it helped
Also check the spring on the tensioner pulley on the deck...mine broke and didn't discover it ...big headache . It keeps partial tension on the belt until the PTO kicks in .
Yep excellent point. Those springs wear out and cause you to feel like your transmission is going out when it is just a weak spring. Thanks for the put
Hey Mike
I have an L120 and I wanted to replace my PTO clutch but I’m not able to do what you say here in the video….
I am trying to take the bolt underneath it but I don’t have an impact so I tried to grab the top nut with a crescent wrench to hold it and the bottom with a torque wrench to take it off….
Well unfortunately the nut on top only gets loose and won’t help to loosen the bottom bolt of the pto clutch….
I also just tried a friends impact and won’t work it only spins the entire thing….
Any other ideas??
Try shoving a rope into the cylinder through the spark plug hole. It will freeze the engine so you can twist that bolt off. I have a video on it
Thanks !! And I appreciate your humor. ☺️
Glad someone does, my wife sure doesn’t appreciate my jokes!
@@MowerMike indeed, I typically just get a glazed over look.. the blank stare.... 😏 😉.

2 to 2,450 subs in 10 months!! Nice work and thanks for the video.
Thanks it has been fun, never figured people would watch me and all my goofy jokes haha
Great job showing both approaches. Well done!!
Thanks !
Important last step Dont reinstall with impact gun use a torque wrench to 125ft lb or you risk breaking the PTO!
Great advice. I havnt broke one yet but much better to do it right.
@@MowerMike I just got a new Extreme Pto and theres a warning when you open the box ive seen torque specs from 53ft to 125ft for what its worth lol
Not family but like the video I own a John Deere gt 235 tractor and my mower blades won’t disengage I changed the pot switch but it didn’t help . So now it looks like the clutch must be bad.
Never had that one happen. Sounds like the clutch is not letting go. Maybe you can take it off and clean it to loosen her up
If you have a big enough open end wrench you can put it on the flat sides of the bushing that the bolt holding the pto clutch up presses against.
I don’t know about all that, I don’t get how that would grab and hold it. Check out my other PTO video with the rope trick
mine is recessed so you can't get a wrench on that I was wondering if there was a special tool for something like that
I have what looks like the same clutch on my husq TS 248XD. After doing some heavy motor work on it and reassembling the motor to the chassis, I now have a loud clanging coming from where the anti-rotation link meets the pto. I also get sparks from where the pulley spins against the link.
What did I do wrong on reassembly?
Did you put the key back on the crankshaft when you installed the PTO? If not that maybe your issue and the crank is twisting in the pto
@@MowerMike yep!
From what it looks like, the clanging is the slot quickly moving back & forth with the linkage between.
It sounds loudest when the pto is first engaged, and when it’s disengaged.
I was able to take a video of it and the grinding appears to be coming from the pulley contacting the link. I’ll post the video to my channel soon.
Thanks for replying! Very cool. :)
@@MowerMike yes sir
I’m taking apart the pto clutch as it seems there might be an issue with it.
The resistance checks out (3.5ohm)
Can also take spark plug off and slide a piece of rope into the cylinder to stop the crankshaft from rotating
Interesting I have never heard of that one, thanks for the tip
Check out my new PTO video I just released where I used your rope trick. Worked great thanks for the idea!
Took mine off too examine it ( blades turn off once hot) looked ok put it all back in, turned it over an the bold an clutch blew off any idea why? Did I put it on backwards? Ruin my thread?
Did you remember to put the washer on the bolt when you put the clutch back on?
I have the 145 pictured. Thanks for the tips.
Glad it helped!
Thanks! Buddy. My JD LA130 21 hp. Went two rounds this afternoon and the blades quit. Tried starting engine didn't click or start. Didn't know it had a clutch under there. Dummy me! Thought it could be the yellow pull up switch or the seat sensor bad. How much is the clutch? Shawn.
No idea but I have never seen the actual clutch go bad. It is probably a sensor. Try unplugging the seat sensor and if starts working that sensor is bad. Also clean up the connection to the PTO. There is an electrical hook up on the wire feeding it. Good luck
Thanks
Question should the PTO clutch hair slide on easily or take some force? If it doesn’t slide on easily can I just sand down the crank shaft?
Yep won’t hurt anything. Is probably the key being sticky
how to adjust park brake linkage on GT245 john deere tractor to keep it from creeping forward and growling when engaging brake?
If you take off the back wheel you can see how it adjust it
@@MowerMike the mower doesn't creep when you take your foot off the pedals. it only does it when putting the park break on.
I took the PTO off to replace my drive belt and went to put PTO back on and I couldn’t get the bolt to thread back up. What did I do wrong?
Look at the bolts and see if the threads are damaged, if so get a new bolt. Or tap or chase the threads in the crank to clean them up. If you tried forcing the bolt in you may have stripped some threads. Do it with the PTO off when you work on it
Gracias por enseñarme cuando no tienes pistola de impacto
De Nada Amigo
Thank you and God Bless. This Was as Clear as could be. I have Absolutely Subscribed for more Knowledge
Wow what a compliment, welcome aboard Mike!
When I engage my switch I can hear hissing with no blade activity, before that there was some metal on metal noises and my belt is now starting to sheer. I have a z335e, and I assume my clutch is at the rear.
You just need to find what is stuck. Something isn’t turning and is binding. I would drop the deck and go through all the pullies and spindles
Awesome video! After reassembly, i have a ledt over piece that was in the grass where i was working. Its kinda like a plastic bushing? It was near where i removed the clutch. Any thoughts?
It maybe the washer that goes on the bolt.
Do you have a link to a good PTO replacement clutch? Thank You
I never have had to replace one so no, just make sure to measure your crankshaft and get the correct size.
Mine won't turn over I replaced switch brake switch pto switch silonoid backup fuse checked all wires but want turn over pto is next any info would be great
Sounds like it is time to get a little test light and follow it till you find the culprit
Hello Mike, I have a John Deere LA175 mower tractor and recently when I did the transmission belt replacement, I use my impact gun to loose the PTO clutch, BUT when I trying to put this back, I broke the big washer next to the main bolt ( I'm not sure if this is a regular washer or have another function) . I Don't know if I can replace only this washer or I need brought all the entire PTO, loo like is attache to the bottom part of the PTO.
Thank you for your help.
It is just a washer, it was probably just stuck on the PTO. Just put it back on or a new washer and you will be fine.
I removed the bolt, but the PTO clutch doesn't drop out afterwards. Any advice?
Wiggle it, pry it, wack it softly lol. Sounds dirty sorry
Thanks so much for this how to video. Very helpful 👍
Glad it helped
My L130 PTO clutch brokeoff, spun and ripped out the attach wire and some other wires. Trying to figure out which ones go where. Installed a new PTO clutch based on your video and now trying to figure out the wiring installation that got ripped off the PTO clutch. Could use some help (tried to figure out wiring diagram-no luck) where all the wires of from the PTO switch go. Thanks.
Edmundo I can sure relate with that frustration. The PTO hooks to two wires that come from the back of the mower and they tie to a little connector. If that connector is gone you can just splice them direct to the two wires on the PTO or use different connectors. I checked my one Deere out in the yard and the PTO wires coming from the mower are orange and white. You will just need to try some trial and error to get them lined up. Good luck!
That was easy. Appreciate y'all.
Glad it helped! Now get to mowin
Gt235. Mover runs well However once I pull pto switch out mover turns off. Blades don't move.
Sounds like a spindle or pully is binding up under the deck. I suggest checking that everything moves freely by hand
Hi
Is the same principle used on a John Deere x520?
Probably so. That is a sweet mower
What would make the pro not work
Usually it is beer and naps.
Nice job Mike. Great channel for sure. And we are not related !!!😅
Haha glad you are enjoying
very good .thanks!
Umm "Man status" Ladies have tools too my friend : ) and one doesn't need to be a genius to use and turn tools or power tools for that matter. Just for reference you do need to remove the deck to remove the PTO Clutch; It's attached to the mower deck and they semi overlap. Love to see anyone remove it without removing the mower deck. Additionally typically pto clutches are faulty or damaged whether it be in the barring or grinding with in the gears. Someone times men hit things when driving a mower with a beer. The clutch then does not just fall down easily it's then a PULLER is required they can rented at Auto Zone or Advance Auto Parts for a refundable deposit upon the return of the Puller or tool. This is also important the bolt cannot be just tightened down it has to be torched to a specified weight on the John Deere. Typically 53-55ft.-lbs. Torch wrenches are available at the same locations.
I am very impressed and slightly turned on by the depth and knowledge of your comment.
Seriously thanks for this it will help people out.
Alright Mower Mike, you made this look to easy, so I am going to give it a go on my L120. Where do you jack it up from and place your jack stand(s)?
That is a trick if you have the deck off you can try and get it jacked up under the frame rail behind the front wheel. Or you can Jack it up on that piece of metal that hangs down where the front of the deck bolts to. Not many places to Jack up the front of the mower
Thanks. Simple enough.
My problem
Is that I am chewing belts and this is the last pulley not replaced.
Can the pulley be serviced separately?
Well the PTO isn’t a pulley. I suggest checking your other drive pullies and make the top of the transmission. Also check your belt guides to make sure they are not rubbing. Good luck I know it is frustrating
Thanks for responding
The mower belt pulley seems to be one assembly with the electric clutch. If that pulley is damaged is it removable with ease.
I bought a Kevlar belt and when I change it I will be sure to check the routing and keeper pins
Thanks
@@richardblumer4349 I have no idea which pulley you are talking about. I have a few drive belt change videos on my channel though that should have you covered. Good luck!
Great simple video. Thank you
Glad it helped Mr Hazzard
Do you need to set the Air Gap?
Haha never heard of an Air Gap. Please inform us what that is
Hi Mike thanks for the info it looks like that would work on my gt235 I like the joke about the two subscribers that was funny. :)
Yep it should work, you got a good mower the older Deere’s are actually better
It is crazy when I made that video I really only had 2 subscribers now I am on the way to 200. Never would have thought this would happen but am loving it. Am all in now on making more videos have some great stuff coming, buckle up lol
@@MowerMike mike where can I get the clutch?
what do i do when the new pto doesn’t want to screw onto the crank? seems like not enough threads
If the bolt and PTO are the same size as the original it should synch it up on there as you tighten it. Or you can just get a longer bolt
After removing the bolt, what type of puller do I need if the clutch is stuck on?
You will have to research that. Just when you put the puller on make sure to put the bolt back in the crank shaft just loose so the shaft of the puller pushes on the bolt head and not the threads of the shaft. Also watch as you pull to make sure you are not bending the pulley. Good luck!
Straight Away, good info.....thanks!
Hey Alan glad it helped. It is crazy how popular that video is, I do have a lot of other good stuff on the channel. Check it out.

You know a lot of people don't know about the clutch brake lever it would have been good if you show them how to take that off first
Excellent point will keep that in mind for next time
My D140 only starts with starting fluid, once it's running, it runs.. any ideas?
She needs a new carburetor check out my Fuel playlist. I don’t have a brigs video yet but have a Kohler one for swapping carbs

That is a big fuse you have a short somewhere.
thats hilarious! "man status"!

Good stuff. Thanks!
Glad you got her off. Lol
What led you to know the clutch was bad? I recently blew my drive belt on my simplicity broadmoor 20/50. I replaced the drive belt, put everything back together, started the mower, and went to engage the switch, and there was nothing. I checked all my wires and everything looks normal, but not sure if the belt shredding didnt mess something up in the clutch? Never had this issue before. Hopeing it's the switch, but wanted to get your thoughts on it.
Thanks for the time,
My clutch was not bad just had to remove it to replace the drive belt. Hmmm not sure on that one there are a lot of clutch videos out there where you can test them. You may have burned it out shredding that belt
Nice video, thanks in advance. Does this work for a L130 as well?
Yes any Deere with an electric Clutch will be the same. If it had a Kohler check out my other PTO removal video

Good advice thanks
Thank you!

Nice
Right, damn find video if I say so myself haha
Much easier than an lx176 and a different style pto
Everything on a LX176 is a PIA to work on
I expect this mower will last several seasons with decent care. ruclips.net/user/postUgkx1VWTrayKBdCKAjzAcZ_Eg4dhHTae3LkN also recommend Also, I ran across the problem with it not starting the 2nd time I used it. There is a safety switch which is pushed in by the chute or mulching piece being attached to the deck. I took the cover off and it wouldn't start. Put it back on, no problem. It takes only a minute with 2 easily accessible wingnuts and no tools. This mower starts up first crank each time and it is a joy to use. It also mows in reverse by putting the key to the reverse area after starting and pushing in the triangular button. It will stay in reverse mode until you turn it off. All in all, for my homeowner needs, I really like this mower-and at 70 bucks a cut here in Miami, it's already more than 1/3 paid for itself in a month.
I am happy for ya Bruce
How much would you charge someone to do this repair?
Nothing, but it depends on how friendly the person is if I would do it for them.
Any way do it without an impact
Yes the video describes how to do it with or without an impact.
I have the same tractor la 145. Tractor runs, but the the blades don't move when I engage the button. Power wires broke. I guess the problem suppose to be secured. Did something fall off. Show exactly how to install or rebolt a new or same pro clutch. Videos should be step by step for a beginner who has never done it before. Your video is to quick. U said reverse the order. Show me how.
That tractor is long gone just keep searching on RUclips. It is easy just one bolt to strap the clutch on. Hard part is getting the bolt tight or lose. Good luck!
Wow....
Wow? Is that a good wow or a bad wow???
Easy to remove if it isn't rusted on....😉
Yep can’t help ya there. Time to get some hammers and a puller out.
Mine wasnt so easy
A win is a win my man!
Liked the video except when you say "maybe you haven't got the 'man status' to have an impact wrench." Some people don't have much money for tools. Sometimes you may be out in the field, or at a buddy's, or working out of town and don't have access to all your tools. I'd say if you can get it done without proper tools, you likely have more "man status" than the guy in a comfortable garage with plenty of tools to make the job easy. Other than that good video.
I completely get your point. Remember these are light hearted videos full of lame jokes.
@@MowerMike Admittedly this was my first video I've watched from you. I thought you were being serious when I first watched it. In the context of the comment being a joke, I don't have an issue with it. Apologies.
