5-Minute Nest Bucket (March 2022)

I brought my gamefowl from Pennsylvania with me to Maine when I moved here December 2019. Since then, I’ve made wooden nest boxes but found that these 5-gallon buckets work very well for broody hens, can fit into tight places, are easier to clean, and much faster to set up.
It takes less than 5 minutes to complete one and have it situated for laying and installed in a coop or brood pen, rather than an hour so of carpentry for wooden nest boxes.
I draw my outline, drill holes along the marker line, cut the hen’s opening with snips, add my dust bath mixture, then hay, screw the bucket to a wall or framing in the coop/pen and then put the lid on.
These have been working very well for me the past couple years.
