Thank you! we took a big break from youtube to attend to the little ones.. but they are the ones asking for more videos so looks like we will have to get back to posting, stay tuned!
Some people keep the girls in the coop in the mornings until they get the job done. Then let them out. Earily evening feed and they coming running back to coop, lock up for the night. Love the boxes. Great idea!! Beautiful family
Love the simple coop. We just got 12 chicks, and are new to the whole chicken thing. We have a shed we are going to convert over to a chicken coop. I appreciate nice, cheap, simple ideas. Watching most people on RUclips build coops for probably thousands of dollars was a bit daunting 😬 Your son is adorable!
Same here we just got 7 chicks that are now nearly full grown and added them to the already family of 10. Just threw out all of our crates though :( can't wait to get started on their coop. Simple farming is such a stress relief.
Hens are about the pecking order. They will roost as high up as possible, always. 4 hens to one nest box is a good ratio. They like to lay where other hens have laid in the past so use a dummy egg in each nest box and they will lay there.
We have wooden eggs that we place in the boxes (just one each) to make the girls think that “hey, this is a good, safe place to lay!” Only thing is we have to put our broody Momma in a dog crate.
@@El.Stumpy That is great! I haven't had mine long but I recently put perches in my enclosure. They are only a foot or so off the ground ( they are learning to get up there, lol). But this makes mine happy!
What is funny is the way I got started was I found a baby chick in a Dollar General parking lot! Brought her home and raised her in my house lol! She is a pet. Follows me like a dog. But I got a coop and we have a big fenced in property so out she went. Then I bought a couple juvenile hens and I have incorporated in. They don't know if they want to come to me or not yet but they are all so wonderful! My husband fell in love with this fuzzy baby chick and that was it...hooked! She lays beautiful eggs and lays 6 eggs a week!
Just came across your channel. I do have a suggestion if nobody hasn't mention it. Chickens loves to lay their eggs in dark places and off of the ground. I also have notice my chickens will hide their eggs ( keep you from collecting them, Lol )... I have found almost 3 doz. ( 23 were no good )... I used hay in mines..... Good luck !!!
Hey, I'm sure you probably realized by now that you should have left a little bit of a "lip" on the bottom of those crates to help keep the bedding contained in them. I'm sure as the birds went in and out of them the bedding kept falling out of them. So did they prefer the crates or the buckets you made?
You mentioned they bunch up on the side of roost..that means they are cold and thats how they keep warm. Maybe you get too much of draft and might consider fixing that.
So papi did it work? Cause I'm having the same problem. This is our first time having chicken. 🤣🤣And we are easter hunting every day. 🤣🤣 how did it go?
put some fake eggs, even golf balls will work for the most part, in the area you want them to lay. like you said, they aren't that smart and it helps quite a bit.
2:40 chicken are a lot smarter than us stupid human think they are. Chickens huddle together to keep warm. Their internal temp is around 95’ or higher.
Thank you for your video and ideas! I have to redo the coop my folks built because everything is wrong. Mainly the nesting boxes are way too high (6 feet) off the ground. Now 6 out of our new batch of 18 hens are starting to lay. They have been free ranging. Two are using the boxes because they see the older ones up there. But I think at least 4 are laying out in the underbrush. I love your coop design, with that stall or divider. How do you keep Rodents out of your coops and the feeder? That was another reason for our coop redo. Keeping food out of the coop significantly reduced the rodents if not entirely eliminated them.
i do the same thing as him, i have dogs that stay around the area of the chicken coop to keep predators away. lost 2 flocks before we decided to move to coop to the dogs. the dogs will scare anything away, and they’ve killed a few predators too.
@@El.Stumpy Unfortunately we do not have any livestock guardian dogs, we’ve had these dogs just protecting our property in general for years, and they don’t have a prey drive toward the poultry thankfully. They are both german shepherds! I do still keep an eye on them because of the breed, but so far they have shown no aggression towards the birds! The coop is only with the dogs, I don’t let the dogs near them while they free range, I’m always outside for hours watching them myself. I would love to get a great pyrenees some day though, beautiful dogs!
@@neytash1716 my husband won’t let me have an outside dog. He is very hands on regarding pets, and thinks it would be cruel to leave a dog outside. Consequently, I’ve lost close to 20 chickens to raccoons, hawks, a Fox, a black bear, and probably a cougar. Now I keep my girls in a giant hoop house attached to their chicken house. But they were so much happier free ranging. I wish i had an outdoor dog😢
Your son is definitely the star of the show. Great video. Thank you.
Excellent re-purpose for nesting boxes. Great helper, how precious! He definitely stole the show 🤣. Great job family!

Your son is a riot!!!
Love lil man helper.thats a good dad.thank you.
What a great idea! If you run the top boxes upside down so there is a roof, you will probably have better luck with them going in the top ones 😉

Love this! Nothing like learning how to be Self Sustainable. A Skill that You will remember for LIFE!!!😋💯
Wow, what a precious helper!! Nice work on your coop..thanks for the video! ❤️
Thanks for the video. Good looking birds. Enjoy your little helper. They grow up faster than you can believe!
Deborah: I agree w/ growing up part. My littlest is now 40 y.o. with a little one of her own.....😢😊
Chickens prefer to roost high. Thats why they only use the top bar. Raise all your bars and maybe they'll pick a different one.
Theyre smarter than you think, they stay together for safety and warmth, theyll always be on the highest point.
Chickens are very smart they remember and recognize up to 100 faces and they all Bunch up together because they keep each other warm
Love this, so happy to be subscribed to your channel☺

What a beautiful property...me encanta su finca!
@@El.Stumpy ok muchas gracias desde Connecticut
What a great helper you have! His interpretation of "what to do" is good....maybe a three year old?
Most chickens roost high because its built in to be high up to watch for predators! Lol, I didn't know so I did same thing!

Got some good ideas here
Glad to hear it!

Thank you! 😊
turkey feeder idea is good.......
Thank you!
Make sure there up off the ground. Get a couple cinder blocks put underneath. I feel like they do better off the ground. So if that don't work...

Sweet son ❤️❤️❤️
Very awesome idea
Nesting boxes should be off the ground. And screw the boxes on the wall to secure them.
I like to way you make the nesting
Buddy, they ARE smart! Height means greater safety and dominance....thats why they don't use ur lower rungs ok

How about putting hay in the nesting box like Bermuda hay or Timothy Hay?
