I’m stealing this idea. Right now I use milk crates, they work good. When I go to add new nesting boxes, I’m going to try the buckets! Thanks for sharing!

Just so everyone knows...there’s no update for this video into whether or not it worked for his chickens and how that experiment went. I checked. You’re welcome.
They work. I made 5 of them and mine use them daily. I put a small peace of wood screwed to the lid for a place for them to land on when they jump up to use then.
@@michaelmyers5027 I'm sure they work. Chickens will use what they can, and if that's all they have, they can use that. The question posed in the video was to see if they might like that commercial design better than the DIY design. And yes, it still will depend on individual chickens or chicken groups. So the DIY version is fine, but we still don't know if the challenge of one design or the other, was preferred by this guy's chickens.
@@Odin31b only one hen even tried them lol I think they are too narrow, or something. They liked the round bucket I used better, but I didn’t want to go buy more buckets, so I ended up building boxes with some scrap lumber I had around.
update please. we are nearing the end of our 5 year plan so we are planing on being on a farm in the next year. SO YEAH as many idea as we can find is the best.
I’m looking for the follow up video on whether the bucket nest worked. I would love to trust you unconditionally, but you placed the nest higher than the roosts, and everyone knows that’s a sure way to get chickens sleeping in them…poopy eggs. Anyone know if the bucket nest is a good idea?
Buying a coup is fine of you want to spend upwards of$800 for the size you have. Return on investment will be a long way off that route. Granted, not everyone is handy with tools and basic carpentry skills. Its all good, buying might be the route to go then. Before dumping a ton of cash on brand shiny new, check out Front Porch Forum, Craigslist, even Facebook market and look for a decent used one. Lots of people buy and a year later don't want to be bothered. Chickens, (really all livestock) require work. Not something the average person wants to do.
Subscribed! Looking to make nesting boxes and I'm no Carpenter, thanks for the info you can actually buy these. I don't have an electric saw but will a hand one do?
@@evamcauley1598 wow 2 years ago. Got 6 more chicks before this corona virus started and they just started laying. It's so much fun getting new chicks. They are so comical.

bev lower Plus the edges are sharp. I see ppl leave sharp and pointy edges on things from fences to all sorts of things and it is something that gets my attention every time. I think it is worth it to take the small amount of time to fix, rather than have to care for a wounded animal. Perhaps it would be better to tie on a thick branch or piece of wood to both ends of the bucket with twine and file all the rough edges of the bucket. You could even cut the cover a little lower, and have the branch just above it so there is a perch and a small wall to keep the bedding inside and being the cover wouldn't be used as the perch, it should, in theory, stay on.

It took forever for my hens to start using the bucket, and now that they are, it is not used much. Maybe if you only have the buckets it would work better.
No higher than 2 feet or so. Also, you do want the nesting boxes lower than the roosts to not encourage using the box as a roost. But don't place the box under the roosts. I wouldn't say there are any hard fast rules, but I wouldn't do it how he did in this video.
Your statement that 'usually' the chickens pick out one or two nest boxes and they all lay in those got me thinking. Isn't that the same thing that Ratites do? Just wondering if that thought has occurred to anyone else.
I made a run and nesting spaces and they had different laying spot options. They prefered the spot which I hadn't intended. Just a fruit tray with leaves in which had the least relative privacy but which was the highest up one. I have two hens and a cock The cock always stands like a bodyguard next to the hen when she is laying. Is that common?
hey i been thinking why you don't get a portable milking machine i know you don't have it can be expensive but well worth the investment. they average around $600
just 1, if they all use the same nest box . otherwise, 16, if they each want to use their own. and in case some share and some don't, then any other number in between 2 to 15 nest boxes, depending on your chickens.
But how do u keep chicks from falling out? I’ve had chickens since Easter and they’re not ready to lay eggs so I’m trying to learn as much as I can before they do.
