Great guide for my PAS-225. I went to the ECHO web site to insure I had the correct P/N's for the coupler and flexible drive shaft, and you were right it was only a 5 minute repair Job. Thanks Lester
Good stuff, glad I found this video. When my shaft fell out it looked like it had sheared off, so I thought I was going to have to take everything apart and bolt a replacement up to the crank shaft. Nice to know its a square drive. Turns out I was able to jam it all back together and finish my yard…*this time*. I will definitely get the parts on order. Thanks again Lester.
Hi Lester. I have an Echo PAS230 trimmer. It was working fine until I took the flex cable out to lube it. I put the cable back into the shaft and connected the two outer shafts. When I started the trimmer up and gave it some gas, the head spun like it's supposed to, but when I left off the throttle and then throttled it back again the head would not turn. I took it apart twice more and got the same result. I'm not sure the flex cable is seated into the clutch since I don't feel it drop into the clutch. I've tried and tried to get the cable into the clutch but I can't tell if it is. Can you help me out? How can you tell if the cable is in the clutch? Thanks and I'm now a subscriber!
good info. I have a pas 262 and use a hedge trimmer attachment that seems to stay attached to the coupler when i disengage with it and sometimes the whole liner comes out and i have to reinsert it back into place. I replaced the stop knob rubber piece but its still getting stuck with the coupler. Not sure if i need a washer put in with the liner or new liner or new shaft cable, what do you think les? thanks
Thanks for the video. Don't have this problem yet, but when I went to lubricate the shaft as part of routine maintenance, I noticed there was no washer within. Small part to order to keep it right. Any idea what the dimensions of the washer are, to see if I can find one at the hardware store?
I have a PAS-225 that needs both the drive shaft and coupler replaced. I'm having the hardest time getting the correct part numbers and a place to order each. Can you help?
Yes sir. First let me thank you for watching and commenting. I generally will slide the shaft back and forth while turning the trimmer head about 1/4 turn back and forth. I also have cranked the unit and generally while applying pressure on the shaft/tube, I’ll gently bump the gas and it slides in. Once again, thank you for watching.

Can I hook the 225 shaft system to a 2620 power head? I'd like to run a pole saw but don't really want to spend the money on the newer series if I can just swap the shafts out.
All echo PAS will interchange. I appreciate you watching and commenting. Or it was that way as of 6 months ago. I no longer work on small engines, gave it up after 26 years.
@thelousyfloridatravelers6390 I appreciate the response. I forgot echos model numbers were reused over the generations of equipment. I have a srm 2620 power head, was wondering if I got my hands on the PAS shaft assembly If it would all bolt up still. They are still the square drive cable. I am actually just getting into small engine repair as a business to earn some side money. Hope you are enjoying whatever endeavor was next for you.
If I’m replacing just the driveshaft, there’s generally already grease in the tube liner. If I’m replacing the outer tube and liner, I do lightly coat it with lithium. I never grease the washer, or coupler lip, you want them clean. Grease will just make sand and dirt stick, and then you would have a sandpaper effect. I generally do put about pencil eraser size dot of grease on the tip of the inner shaft, where the two INNER SHAFTS connect.

Would that somehow cause vibrations on my shaft. On my pas 225?

What if the shaft is coming out but it seems to be grinding when I’m pruning vertically
Mine broke off looking to get the brakes piece out lol
I'm having difficulty reinstalling the flex cable back into the clutch square drive socket. Any suggestions? Thanks

Is it not necessary to put any grease on the shaft, washer, or coupler lip?
