Common BMX Repairs

One of the many great things about bmx bikes is that they're really easy to work on. For the vast majority of repairs you'll need only allen keys and a ratchet with 15mm and 17mm sockets. If you have pegs you’ll need an extension, and it’s also good to have a pedal wrench. As is the case with any bike, I recommend investing $3 on a lifetime supply of general purpose grease.
Let's talk about a few repairs which are needed most often on BMX bikes.
Even on a new bmx you may have issues with your bars moving when you land. To fix this, first remove the bolts clamping them to your stem. Then, clean all the areas that make contact as good as you can, which will prevent any debris or loose paint from allowing the bars to move. Before you put everything back together, grease the threads on the bolts so that you can get them really tight without any issues. When reinstalling the handlebars, most riders make them about parallel with the fork, but this can be tweaked to your liking. Tighten each bolt a little at a time, so that everything sits flat and even. You’ll want to use a calibrated torque wrench to apply exactly 8 newton meters of force to each bolt. I’m kidding, it’s a BMX, so tighten the crap out of them.
Next is the headset, which consists of the bearings in the head tube. A loose headset is common in BMX because the bike is subject to hard landings and crashes. A loose headset can cause an annoying rattle and even result in damage to your frame and bearings. To test for a loose headset, you can stand in front of your bike and apply force to your bars in different directions. If you feel anything besides steering, it’s probably your headset.
To correct this, loosen the pinch bolts on the stem evenly until your bars can move independently of the fork. Then tighten the bolt on the stem cap slightly and test your headset again. Don't over-tighten this bolt, as it could make it hard to steer, or crush your bearings. You should be able to steer easily and freely. Once the headset feels right you can line up your bars and tighten the pinch bolts again.
With all the abuse that BMX cranks take it's common for them to develop a creaking sound. This usually means the spindle wasn't greased properly during installation. Unlike road and mountain bikes, BMX cranks don't usually need a crank puller for removal. On these cranks we’ll loosen the pinch bolt and remove the cap at the base of the crank. Getting the crank off the spindle may take some effort if you've been running them without grease for a while, but these ones come off pretty easily. Make sure there's a light coating of grease on the spindle and reinstall the crank arm by tightening the cap first, and then the pinch bolt. Do this for both crank arms, and the annoying creaking should be gone. Any other sounds, like popping or grinding are probably your bottom bracket, and we won’t be going over that in this video.
Like most single speed bikes, the chain tension on a BMX is set by positioning the rear wheel in the slotted dropouts. Some people have trouble getting the chain tension right, and the rear wheel lined up properly, but it's actually pretty simple. First, let's talk about chain tension.
When you turn the cranks and observe the chain on a BMX you'll notice that the drivetrain will have a "tight spot" and a loose spot. The better your parts, the less the disparity between these two extremes. We'll get back to this in a minute.
To adjust your chain tension, loosen the axle nuts and move the wheel within the dropout. When you get it to a good spot, tighten just the drive side lightly. Now turn the cranks and check the tension. If it's harder to turn the crank when you get to the tight spot, the chain may be too tight. This can stretch and weaken the chain, plus make it harder to pedal. To correct this, keep the crank on the tight spot and loosen the nut on the drive side a little. The tension on the chain should cause the wheel to move inwards slightly, and then you can retighten the nut.
Now it's time to line up your wheel. Usually the wheel will be almost perfect at this point, but if not, apply some pressure with your thumb to get the wheel into the right spot, and tighten the other nut until it stays in place. Now test your chain again and you're done. You should also grease the threads on the inner part of the rear axle so the nuts can be tightened more easily.
So those are a few of the most common repairs you should be able to perform on your BMX. Most others require the same tools and some common sense. Bmx bikes can handle all sorts of abuse, as long as you’re willing to tweak things back into place every now and then.
In the next video, we’re going to learn the first BMX techniques you’ll need to know.

I'm 34 and got an itch for a BMX a while ago.
Found a basic Mongoose (2011 Article) for 50€ and offered 40, and the seller (young, very cheerful mom) accepted it. Visually it was in really good shape and probably not ridden much as the tires and tubes were original. Though it had bad bearings all over the place and some other problems.
-Way too tight front wheel bearings (loose ball, cup & cone) from factory were in really bad shape (some balls were half moon shaped!)
-Headset was toast (probably also too tight from factory)
-Cassette/driver had one bad small bearing and one bigger on the axle (non-drive side)
-Bad chainline, which I fixed by placing one of the shims/washers on the other side of the chainring and added a washer on the securing bolt between crank and the chainring too
-Driver pawls were toast, so I had to get creative and took some out of another mtb freewheel/cassette body
The pawls wouldn't fit in place so I had to remove material from the driver body in order to get them sitting flush when pressed down.
Driver side crank had wonky surface where the pedal should sit tight, so I had to take a file and remove material in order to properly seat the surfaces of the pedal and the crank. It's still not 100%, but more mating surface now. I was afraid they's made the threads wonky at the factory but they were straight, just the mating surface was not.
Changed the cone nuts and balls on the front hub, but it would need the cups or some novelty machining.
It's quite heavy at 12.7 Kg, but what I've gathered, weight shouldn't be an issue and should actually make ones technique better when practicing with a heavier bike.

also remove the cranks so you can get to the bearings and drown then in oil, this will stop your cranks from moving when you ride pegs.

I measured each of the teeth valleys with a caliper and then proceeded to remove material where the valleys were more shallow. I noticed that even a 0,1 to 0,2 mm difference is enough to cause a tight spot.

Yo my headset was so loose that I was able to unscrew the nut above it with barely any force with my fingers I tightened it and dropped a few drops of lube on the bearings there's absolutely no play and turns smoothly thanks

Someone dumped a bmx on my grandmother's land. She said it was there for a week and said she wanted to get rid of it. So at 30, I rode a BMX for the first time and took it home. I think the chain is loose as I kept coming off. I will give it some TLC tomorrow, maybe even a new paint job 😊👍 most exciting thing to happen to me all quarantine!

If you change your cranks change your bottom bracket too because the Bottom bracket dust caps might wiggle around letting unwanted water and dirt into the bearings and frame making a squeaking noise and promoting rust buildup. Try to get the cranks and Bottom bracket from the same manufacturer to ensure they fit correctly for sure

I have a question for whoever has an opinion. My mountain bike has a euro bottom bracket and bolt on front sprocket. I need to replace the bottom bracket but I have struggled to find out some information. Would switching to a modern bottom bracket be a smarter decision? I have a 2 piece 19mm 8spline crankshaft, would I have to replace it as well to replace the bottom bracket?

Pro tip always examine the enite drivetrian when doing repairs around the cranks/backwheel its common on entry bmx bikes to have a loose driver in the hub hell ur chain could just be a little rusted or dirty

Please don't pull or push your back wheel across to get in inline. You'll be slightly bending the axle and then forcing it to stay like that. This will not only weaken the axle, but it will also mean your bearings don't run parallel which will ruin them. Plus as soon as you hit your back wheel it'll tend to spring back to its original position. Hope this helps.

Question I have an 83 mongoose looptail. I haven't ridden the thing in years because because the pedals started sipping Independently of the sprocket and when it happened it was so hard that you would rack yourself on the seat. What would cause this? I've been wanting to get back into BMX but without my other BMX bike is stripped all the way down and needs pretty much everything that moves replaced due to extreme abuse from the guy who gave it to me.

On another video with uneven chain tension, I seen it loosen the bolt(s) on the front sprocket to adjust sprocket position, this one is not adjustable ? Rotated to the position where chain was too tight, it pushed on the chain a bit, to move the front sprocket, then tighten the bolts again.

when I put pressure on my pedal for speed something by the sprocket or chain makes a noise as if my chain slipped and I check and my chain is loose every time that noise happens (I tighten it Everytime)

My head set bolt won't tighten. The bolt will just keep spinning when I turn it. It's a bolt not a Allen key kind. I have those bars that will spin with the back brakes if you understand me. I just want to figure out how to tighten the bolt so my bars won't spin if I come down to hard on a trick. Thanks
