  • Super Bowl 36 in 2002 was the last NFL game that Pat Summerall and John Madden would call together as a team. Pat Summerall retired in 2002, at the same time John Madden's contract with FOX expired and moved to Monday Night Football on ABC. Summerall would later return to call select games with other partners on a fill-in basis for FOX.

I'll give Fox credit for one thing, they were wise and intelligent enough to hire Summerall and Madden to front their NFL coverage, when they first outbid CBS in late 1993. Fox knew that people were going to be skeptical in regards to how they would handle football (up until that point, Fox was primarily known as the "rebel"/"maverick" network in contrast to the more established "Big Three") so they needed Summerall and Madden to lend credibility and to assure viewers that they were serious enough in wanting to cover football "properly".

John, Pat, and yourself seem involved in a conversation as we speak. Unfortunately, you passed away this morning. As a child, I spent countless hours listening to you and Pat while playing Madden games, including the sport of football. When I got off of Madden 22, my friend’s dad freaked out as he found out you had passed away. As the year draws close, a great man has passed away. God knows what to do with legends. As I go to the Alabama and Cincinnati game Friday, it would make me glad if they do a moment of silence for John Madden. The moment makes sense since his legacy will have a lasting impact on every college football player playing football right now because of him. Hopefully, Pat and you get to have a great discussion about it, after which you can finally feel at ease, John.

Go to 3:02. This is the famous Montana to Clark touchdown pass. The CBS TV play-by-play man that day was Vin Scully. That sound bite was from a different game.
