Stuff like this will definitely will bring tears to the eyes of any NFL fan on a day like today. RIP to a true GOAT. John Madden eulogized Pat Summerall and I think it would be appropriate if Al Michaels would eulogize John.
The NFL is not the greatest game today. While it is great entertainment, it is not family friendly. Ticket prices are out of reach for the majority of families. The owners always have their hands out for entitlements to help build their stadiums at the taxpayers expense. While their overpaid employees consist of a large percentage of thugs, domestic abusers, drug addicts, and general criminal elements.
The sadness John felt that day could only be matched by the joy he had today seeing his old buddy again in heaven. We are so sad down here because John Madden left an indelible mark on the game of football and as a a result, all of us. But he will live on forever and have a front row seat for every game forever. Thank you for everything, John and Pat. RIP.

I will admit that it is VERY difficult to beat John and Pat and their discussion of the Baby Bucket and whether or not the Mommy and Daddy Buckets were married, etc. I wasn't the happiest of young men back then, but these 2 guys made me bust a gut dozens of times in my youth and I will always treasure the memories of them.

What a beautiful eulogy. I hope that there is someone left to euligize John half as well as he did Pat. There goes another nail in my childhood coffin. There is only Bill White, Vin Scully and Al Michaels left.
The generations that missed out on John Madden and Pat Sumerall will have missed out on the greatest NFL broadcasting DUO in the history of football! PERIOD
I grew up watching these 2 in the late 80's and 90's. There has never been a better broadcasting duo than these men. They are synonymous with Thanksgiving and football for me. Miss you Pat.
Pat was a great play by play commentator. When they teamed him with John it was majic. Since they were with CBS and later Fox, they had the NFC during the regular and post seasons during that great run of NFC Super Bowl wins. Think of the memories of all those fan bases. 49ers, Redskins, Giants, Bears, Cowboys, Packers and Rams. Lots of great memories of their teams winning and listening to these guys calling the action.
Started watching football in 1999 when I was 10. Me and my dad watched every Rams game and every episode of HBO's Inside the NFL. I'm 32 now and I just realized how much Madden and Summerall were special people in my life. Madden and Summerall were iconic, you had to watch the game they were calling even if it wasn't your team. It was like you were in the room with them and they always respected the players and understood their emotions. They were funny and explained the game in a way that any one could understand even if you were just a kid. This was a great eulogy by Madden and shows how genuine these two guys are.
I just came across this video. A masterful and emotional eulogy by Madden. Pat Summerall, although I'm not old enough to have seen him play as a Giant, there just are not enough words to describe what listening to his play by play watching football meant to me. Although the quintessential professional, when broadcasting Giants games you can sometimes sense in his voice a little disappointment during the lean years of the pre-Parcells era when they would not only usually lose, but would find colossal ways of doing it. But you also could sense some joy in that voice when they became a powerhouse in the NFL once again. Of all the memorable broadcasts, one moment stands out for me: the 1990 NFC Championship game at Candlestick Park, the 49ers going for 3 straight Super Bowls. Giants playing without their starting QB Phil Simms and starting HB Rodney Hampton, both lost to injury. The San Francisco crowd chanting "Threepeat! Threepeat!" as if a Niner victory was a foregone conclusion as their team was driving into Giant territory with less than 2 minutes left, draining the clock with their 13-12 lead. Then Erik Howard knocking the ball out of Roger Craig's hands and LT recovering the fumble to kick off the game-winning drive. Matt Bahr kicks the winning FG on the last play of the game to win it for the Giants and I will remember that Pat Summerall voice belting out this line with a touch of elation: "And the kick.......IS GOOD!..........THERE WILL BE NOOOOOO THREEPEAT!!" God bless you, Pat Summerall, for the countless wonderful memories!!!!
As man born in 1981 the year pat and John got together, they literally raised me in my football knowledge. To think that the most influential man in football in my lifetime never actually played a down or a coached a game just goes to show you how much bigger John was then football. He transcended football to become a National icon. As pat said so many eloquent times, “Thanks, John,”. You will be missed immensely as pat had and was before you. May you both Rest In Peace and enjoy some football together this weekend.
I'm not trying to show any disrespect to your comment but John Madden coached in the NFL for a decade and won a Super Bowl with the Raiders. Before that he played college football and was drafted by the Eagles but got hurt in training camp. John Madden's football knowledge came from personal experience.
Kyle, your father brought joy into the homes of millions of people all over the world. I know my family sure misses listening to Pat and John banter back and forth. Thank you for uploading the service, and God bless you.
sometime in 1968 Pat did a TV commercial for American Express Co. I made a mental note of it. the next year I was able to get an interview with American Express, my first job right out of college. I didn't list Pat as a reference on my resume but did mention the commercial during the interview. Thank you Pat. True Story.
What a Eulogy.......I'm deeply touched by John's words. All that time we saw him coaching on the sidelines and then announcing in the booth you just knew he was a tremendous guy. This speech reinforced that for anyone who had any doubt.
Terry O'Brien's decision to pair Pat with John Madden was the defining moment of both of their careers..what was considered an afterthought became the lynchpin of all football broadcasts..Pat and John singlehandedly made football a game that could be understood by EVERYONE..They are the true Giants in SPORTS Broadcasting...
Agreed. And remember, the decision to break up Summerall and Tom Brookshier, who had called three Super Bowls together, was criticized. But what they were together, Summerall and Madden took to another level.
When you grow up watching Football the voices behind the mic are as big a part of it as the game. There embettited in you brain forever. They just had a special chemistry together that will be remember for along time.
Yes, I can remember vividly his announcing the CBS Sunday night lineup of 60 Minutes, Murder She Wrote, Archie Bunker’s Place, and I believe Falcon Crest.
"Brevity...brevity...brevity..." That's classic. :-) That was beautifully said by John Madden. LOVED Pat Summerall. Listening to him call a game was pure magic-- he just had a special, connecting way of conveying everything that was happening on the field. the way he did it just felt like football, and I swear, whenever I watch a game, I can't help but wish it was Madden and Summerall on the booth.
Growing up watching the Chicago Bears dominance in 85 there was something even more special when Pat and John did the broadcast. The numerous Thanksgivings spent with them and the fun they gave us will forever remain.Great job John as your friendship came out to us viewers and you nailed this

What a beautiful eulogy. I hope that there is someone left to euligize John half as well as he did Pat. There goes another nail in my childhood coffin. There is only Bill White, Vin Scully and Al Michaels left.
How have I never seen this before? John Madden, you stopped a room with Pat!
A very moving speech. John Madden always seemed like a nice person, and I thought he really showed it here.
Never will there be a combo like them
Yeah there will John Madden is fantastic and Pat Summerall is a bit overrated
That would be obvious.
The generations that missed out on John Madden and Pat Sumerall will have missed out on the greatest NFL broadcasting DUO in the history of football! PERIOD
I liked John and Al better
No more goodbyes. The duo are back together again.
Very touching, made me cry. What a duo they were. John and Pat, May God bless you both.
I grew up watching these 2 in the late 80's and 90's. There has never been a better broadcasting duo than these men. They are synonymous with Thanksgiving and football for me. Miss you Pat.
With the state the NFL is in now, everyone sure misses Pat Summerall. He was the golden voice of the NFL. The best announcer ever.
Without a doubt. John said it best. Pat was the voice of football. RIP Pat
I miss Pat Sumerall and John Madden on Monday Night Football and Thanksgiving Football. You were the best. You both Rest In Peace
Pat and John have been reunited. Rest well Mr. Madden
Pat and John are calling games at the big stadium in the sky. RIP John
By far the best commentary duo ever they don't come any classier than those two gentlemen
If that doesn't break your heart, nothing will. Two great men, reunited now. Rest in Peace.
Man I love how John is with words. He's perfect here
That was beautifully Heartfelt John Madden, thank you for that and much more.
R.I.P. Pat Summerall
God Bless you and your Family.
❤️Kyle
No doubt about it Pat and the coach were freaking awesome together, we sure miss you guys.
Madden was an NFL player and a head coach of the Oakland Raiders and won a Super Bowl coaching.
Kyle, your father brought joy into the homes of millions of people all over the world. I know my family sure misses listening to Pat and John banter back and forth. Thank you for uploading the service, and God bless you.
Madden\Summerall. The best.
Listening to Pat call a game is what caught my attention. He and John Madden made me a football fan.
Now John and Pat will be broadcasting games together in Heaven
RIP 🙏
Man does this hurt. John Madden, you will be missed. God bless you
RIP John Madden
He's now reunited with Pat.
RIP Pat and now to John Madden too!
sometime in 1968 Pat did a TV commercial for American Express Co.
John and Pat's coverage of games in the early 80s really got me back into NFL football. They were the best of all time.
When you grow up watching Football the voices behind the mic are as big a part of it as the game. There embettited in you brain forever. They just had a special chemistry together that will be remember for along time.
I still can hear their commentary in my head sometimes from the Madden's on Sega.
Yup I miss those days;💪🏽
Yes, I can remember vividly his announcing the CBS Sunday night lineup of 60 Minutes, Murder She Wrote, Archie Bunker’s Place, and I believe Falcon Crest.
Beautiful tribute from John to Pat ..so heartfelt,genuine.... very moving.
These things are so hard to do. So hard. Pat & John were the best.
I loved listening to Pat and John. They made even a bad football game fun. A true friendship there... RIP Sir.
