  • The SWR Class 458s have a very colourful history. They have been withdrawn, brought back to service, refurbished and strengthened to 5 coaches, withdrawn pending the fate of their future.
But the juniper lives on! Being reverted back to 4 coaches and having their maximum speed reinstated to 100mph, the class 458 has once again returned in a new form!

I take it that the Class 458/4s will operate to Reading and Windsor & Eton Riverside. Very nice.

They are (at the moment) operating on London - Weybridge via Hounslow diagrams, but that could change in the future

So why did they change them back to 4 coach’s from 5?

When SWR had plans to run them on mainline duties alongside the 444s and 450s so they could run 12 coach lengths - in theory at least!

Two reasons, to run in 12 car. And also to make them lighter so that they hit 100mph easier
