    To say the 701 is not an improvement over the trains it's replacing is utterly ridiculous. The only thing you seem to care about are the seats, and well I'll give that they are a very key part of the train, are not the only part of puzzle especially on a commuter train. You make no mention of the plug sockets and USB ports at every seat, the walkthrough carriages, the mini tables, better noise isolation, improved acceleration, etc etc, which none of the older fleet have. All those small things contribute to the passenger experience as well. As a commuter on SWR, it's unfortunate that we didn't receive seats similar to those on the 720s or 730s, but at the same time I'm very grateful of all the other improvements, it's such a massive step up. It could aways be better of course, but you can't say it's not a large improvement, and one I'm certainly looking forward to.

      You know what, fair enough. I did forgot to mention some of those other additions on the 701, especially accelaration (which I was going to joke about when I was writing the script last night but forgot to add it in.) For that I'm sorry, but even then, especially after a four year delay, I exepcted alot more from these trains. I don't care much for the walkthrough coaches, especially since it's not the first SWR train to have them.
      I bring up seats alot in my videos because comfort is a major factor that has been treated like a joke with the railways, with every excuse thrown into the wind whenever it's brought up. If I'm going to be paying triple digits to go from London to Cardiff, I'd like some seats that have some degree of comfort in them. If not, then National Express and Megabus say hello with their dirt cheap fares + comfortable coaches. Even the 458 has nice seats.
      Also just to be slightly pedantic, the 458s had tables (and it's cancelled variant had additonal charging points too), the 707s had charging ports and the 450s have both of those + are pretty well refined. Only the 455 is the one that lacks all, but that's still 1 for 3.

      Oh and I forgot to say, I really appreciate comments like this. Seriously, pointing out flaws with my points and/or contesting what I have to say prevents an echo chamber. Regardless of who sways who, I'm thankful so know that.

      Yeah, you're right. While I do love the 455s (and 456s before they were scrapped), the 701 fleet will be a massive improvement.

    Nice one as always, Dan! I've not been on any of these three yet though I'm hotly anticipating the 730/2s to get rid of the 350/2s. I really hope they have armrests though - WMR seem to be proving that they deny the existence of arms with both of the trains they've introduced so far...

      The strong rumor is they will have armrests, more tables and slightly wider seating space than the 730/0

      The 350/2s are bloody horrible, but I'll withold total judgement until the 730/2s overcome their stage fright in X amount of months/years.

    I know all the old rolling stock clattering about doesn't help the image of British manufacturing, but back in the day, most of what was built was great at the time. It's running past their use by date that ruins them, and that happens to anything.
    Shame we seem to have forgotten how to build such stock.

      I wouldn't even say it's a case of old age. Anything can run well past its prime as long as it's maintained and looked after. Belgium has plenty of trains and coaches from the 70s and 80s still in use today which, Switzerland has the Re 4/4 still in use since the 60s and 70s and even Amfleet coaches in America are from the 70s too.

    So SWR can actually run a decent amount of coaches down to Epsom on a Sunday, sick of travelling on 4 car 455s!

    Watch them put all the 701s into service and still have no Hounslow loop service outside of peak hours only. Also for such a new train, I didn’t think the suspension on the 701 would be as miserable as it is, but there you go.

      I feel annoyed that I keep forgetting to pay attention to the Aventra's bad suspension. I think they got me with how bad the seats are as a way of making me focus on only that! Also yes, I want my Hounslow Loop service back. Preferably within the decacde.

      @@MaverickHunterDaniel I think for me because I’m so used to the 450s which for the most part are very smooth, I focused a lot on the suspension when I rode the 701 for the first time. The seats didn’t bother me too much surprisingly, but most of my journeys don’t exceed 30 minutes, I couldn’t ride on them for over an hour. Thank you for the follow up review by the way!

    One thing I have realized about the Aventras, is that they sound like and R179. (Probably because they both were built by Bombardier)

    I would take those ironing board seats any day of the week, where I live (Hong Kong), the seats are fucking pure metal and you never even get to sit in them because so many people use the train, were suffering from success. Also first class on the train is ironing board seating and 50% of the time you don’t get a seat, you pay a dozen extra hkd just to be forced to stand?? Ridiculous. Some people stand on the train for an hour and a half and the decent actually nice looking trains are getting replaced by monotone, ugly, uncomfortable, dull, and just straight up bad excuses of a modern train. The train length got shortened to 9 cars, from 12, the vibrant fun loving colors got replaced by grey, grey, and more grey, the first class seats got changed from passable to horrendous, and they even sound and look ass. I would gladly have ironing board seats in standard class.

    A 4 and a half year delay on bringing trains out is ludicrous! You'd expect a product to be delivered on time and not waiting forever for a product to be finished. The 455's probably shouldn't have been sent to the 'scrap god' until enough of the new ones were placed into service or temporarily replaced with newer rolling stock. Ugh... Ironing board seats again!

      Glad you enjoyed and yes, the entire process was basically wrong from every step. The 442s and 456s should've stayed intact and ONLY when the 701s are ready should they be eased into service and replaced the 455s and 456s. Even when they are all ready, the old stock should be in storage for a few months in case things go tits up, THEN scrappage if needbe.
      But lolno. Glad you enjoyed the video :)

    Was gonna ride a 730 on Tuesday but i would have had to wait an hour for the train to arrive at Walsall
    So I got a class 350/2 back to New Street then a train from Moor Street to Solihull

    Can't say that I'm suprised at any of what you said
    Binning the 458/4s was yet another stupid swr decision and why am i not suprised
    And then they wonder why they have trouble finding enough stock for an 8 car Woking - Waterloo service in the peak when they got rid of the 456s, some 455s, the 707s and about half of the 458s before the clogged artery trains entered service 🙄

      They are still refurbing the 458 fleet, but SWR won’t be keeping them on. Go figure

      2 months later the 458/4 is running metro services currently till the 701 comes in and the 458/4 can go to the Portsmouth line

    The 730 and 701 in my opinion are the best types of Aventras, both got 2+2 seating, tables (which the 720s should have) and are optimised for both packed rush hour stuff and less busy services. The 730s are better though because no ironing board bullshittery and a generally better interior.

      No worries. I could agree that the 730 is the best, but the best Aventra still doesn't compare to the worst FLIRT 3.

      Nah, it's clearly a Safe class. It passes the locked box test easily and doesn't need too many resources to contain it.

    When I see videos of the 701 I’m always surprised by the quick acceleration. In (undefined variable) years after they all enter service I wonder if they would allow timetables to be tightened up, or if they will just keep delays down.
    You absolutely killed me at “smells nice”!

      I agree with your point about the acceleration wholeheartedly. I've been on one, it offers that "push back into your seat" feeling. Good to see a metro/commuter train actually be suited performance wise for what it's doing, even more impressive when you take intro consideration it being a third rail DC train. And yes hopefully the timetables can be tightened, that would be great. Although don't hold your hopes up, this is firstgroup

    Ex Greater Anglia 379's is moving to Great Northern to replace 387's leaving them more likely to be moved to Southern, Concidering it has Southern spec intereor, But saying that if I can remember correctly, GWR was also looking for 30 4 car EMU so they could go either way.

      The 30 for GWR was basically a “reroll” for a better lease price on the existing fleet. That was resolved a while ago. The new rumor is whether the excess 387s might go to Southeastern

    what is the London North Western upcoming Aventra's replacing? I swear they only operate young desire units

      My guess is that they'll be replacing the 350/2s and assisting the other 350s on the longer routes so that LNWR will be able to have more 8 and 12 car trains or possibly have higher frequency services. But that's just a hunch. Don't take my word on it.

      Yeah, the accelaration is good on them. I didn't mention it here again because part 1 already talks about the accelaration rate.

      Oh for goodness sake, part one, which wasn't originally called part one by the way, was made because I was fed up of waiting for the 701 and 730s to enter service. Both videos have links to their respective parts and I'm perfectly fine with how I've done it here. Please take your ungratefulness elsewhere.

    I will say this if only the 720s had 2 + 2 seating and it was 4, 8 and 12 coaches long they would have been far better then what they are

      I don’t think the length is that much of a problem, mostly the 3+2 seating. The length of 2 Aventras equals the length of 3 older 4-car sets; also it can’t be short formed as badly now
