I have been living in cebu city for 7 years, and seeking internet love is bad. Almost all of the girls just want money, or support for school and kid. Many of them actually have filipino bfs in the background, so they get the money and give to bf. Lucky for me, there are plenty of nice girls in cebu city. But i look for long term gf, not for fun.

If you lost the entire house twice in America to your ex wife that means you had to do something wrong. When a divorce is due to irreconcilable differences and no fault, the judge will ALWAYS split everything. The only difference is if there is a child involved, the full time parent generally speaking will get the house in that case…which at that point it is the child getting the house, not your wife. I think you are full of it and making this up. Men just don’t lose two houses to two different wives unless something is going on like cheating. Same thing for these stay at home wives, raising children, doing a harder job than the men, and many times the man ask her to not work…then in their 40s he decides he wants someone younger so he cheats, then ask for a divorce…that woman 100% deserves alimony and much more! She spent her prime career years raising the children when she could have been working and putting back for a 401k, instead, the man got to save for his retirement and she is left with nothing and no career history. She 100% deserves half of his retirement in tbis case.

@@Deltadawg Do you even know how to read? I NEVER said I lost a house twice. I said 2 houses. How dare you jjudge someone when have such little info. Your fairy tale of me cheating on the "perfect" wife NEVER happened! You have no idea of what I went through. You're the one full of it. Just cause I lost 2 houses doesn't mean I don't have another house that I live in. Many divorces are complicated, difficult & not simple like you say & think. My ex never accused me of cheating but a complete stranger like you seems to know better. Unbelievable. I raised my kids in a very difficult situation & you judge me?

You just have to know it and be prepared for it. My advice is take a couple of trips here and know ph a little bit, the people, places, and culture. When it comes to dating and finding partners, i suggest know the person and his/her family well first during a couple of trips here. Most of the filipinos are family oriented. And lastly, respect all the people around you here, if you show respect they will show respect in return and it might help you in times of troubles or problems or if you need help.

Telling you one of my stories about making business in the Phil.: I had before a girl for whom I put up a business, which came out to be very successful, much because her being very industrious. But when she became wealthy, she began changing her colors. So I asked her if she really wants me to stay or leave. Her answer was: "If you want to stay you can stay, but if you want to leave, you can leave". Translating it from Woman's Language to a Standard Human language, it meant for me: LEAVE!!! So to even the score with her, I just left without notifying her and disappeared; A very big embarrassment for her before the family and the village. I gave up all my business share, just not to get involved with such a woman. Never mind; There are so many women left around, if one likes to have a new START UP adventure hehehe. In general there is a world wide rule: "Don't pay a woman ahead, because she may get your money and kick you in your ass". Money is the only way to control a Filipina, so never shoot all your cash magazine in a volley.

@@tonyste12 Thanks for the comment, but I want to add that this lady was a college graduate and I was her first man, so you think you got a deal, but when she asked me: "Tell me how much money you have?" I saw that I have business with a "face of a money" and it was one more brick added to my decision to eject. I had girlfriends even before and I can see how the culture of women is changing with time. We are now into a wave of foreigners exiting the stress of Covid lockdowns rushing to tropical countries to find women/wives, and there will come later a counter wave of foreigners bailing out of those relations. This happened before, when the previous wave of men seeking Filipina wives was generated by the end of Vietnam war. I know about popular places which were deserted by foreigners after they learned that things are not that good. On the other hand I am pleased to see many happy couples who were holding relations for many years. But those women belong mainly to a previous generation. K.I.S. Women who marry men from any country, any race and at any age, is something pointing to anomalies in the society they come from.

@@abc-mf4jn Now that I know a little more of the story, it makes sense of what you did, even more. Yes, there are many so called 'men', that will take advantage of someone in need and will use them without having a second thought about it. Especially having kids and then not giving a shit about it. Many of these 'men' probably come to the Philippines and other places like that, to do just that, use women. which it turn makes those women etc. mistrust all men and wanting to get even....and there is a back and forth cycle, of good men being taken advantage off.....and so on and so on. When you bring a child into this world without caring how it is going to survive or your pregnant wife/girlfriend, that is the lowest of the low in my opinion. Scum of the earth.

As someone who has lived in the Philippines and done graduate work there, you did a great service regarding 2 things you mentioned especially. 1) The budget - where you mentioned that you haven't seen $1,600 in a while. Folks need to hear that truth after seeing dozens of videos claiming you can be satisfied living in the Phils on these tiny unrealistic sums. The vast majority of Westerners will never adjust to or adapt to living anywhere near average filipino standards. 2) The medical needs. Super important! While it should be obvious that MOST need additional medical surveillance and care as we age - retired people need health care to continue to live. Most vloggers completely ignore this reality, doing a serious disservice for those who choose to watch their video. And no, most people without significant means, will not be able to just get on a plane and get medical care at Bumrungrad in Bangkok or fly to the states - this is beyond a unrealistic expectation. On a less critical note. Transportation. I am a thicker 6'2, and all of the typical means of transportation in the Philippines, really don't fit. Nothing pleasurable about trikes, jeepney's or riding on the back of a "motorcycle taxi" when you are a westerner! Thanks for the unusual level of honesty.

I grew up living in a super frugal almost miserly home and I refuse to live like that as an adult. Also what is the point of living off of 10% of your income? Are you telling me if you made $10,000 a month in retirement you would live off of $1000 a month?

I also believe that it's true that most expats live on $1500 or less. BUT... they do NOT live an American lifestyle. At best, they life a quasi-American/affluent Filipino lifestyle. Those who expect to live a truly American middle class lifestyle in the Philippines will need a bare minimum of $3000, and likely in the $5000 - $7000 range. By American middle class lifestyle I mean: standard 2000sf house with 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, gated community with security that resembles the safety and condition of a good American neighborhood and neighbors with similar incomes, 2 cars, American food including good beef/fresh milk/etc (most of it will be imported), high quality private schools for children, imported liquor, good internet, good entertainment budget, island-hopping vacations and an occasional trips back to the U.S.

this was a good honest talk. Unfortunately most vloggers just visiting the Philippines sugarcoat their whole holiday. I know its a holiday but to sugarcoat everything is just not right. Wherever I go on holiday I look at things as they are. Staying there for a month on holiday with no spending restraints is one thing. I was there for a month but in the same time also had a deep look around at supermarket prices and some stuff is really expensive even by Western standards like getting a good piece of beef or cheese. As you say you have to live there for some time to see if you can take the good with the bad. True its a lovely place and people are so nice and respectful and thats a big plus. In a whole month I was well treated everywhere and didnt encounter one single problem which says a lot about a country. The rest boils down to common sense.

The issue with the trikes made me remember a story of a friend who moved from Florida to Chicago's suburbs... he always treasured the romantic beauty of snow.
As Winter approached he saw his neighbours parked their cars near the street, and not in the garage, or close to its door. He found that curious.
As the first snow fell he found it gorgeous, "like Christmas!". He totally loved it... until he had to shovel the snow out. He understood why cars were parked close to the street. On the second day, he had to shovel much less snow. On the third day, he tried to find a way to do it in a "smarter" way, on the fourth day he got frostbite.
Since day five he is planning to move back to Florida.

They paid high rates for years to get nothing when they needed it. I am a big fan of land somewhere with no restrictions, and a RV. When the news starts screeming Hurricane, pack up an go visit family inland. I can hook to my 5th wheel an haul it from Florida to the the North Georgia mountains, spend a week with family an haul it back on less than $300. $500 or so if I didnt have family there an spent a week in an RV park. That assumes you can handle living in an RV an can find land where you want to be that is unrestricted.

Hello Paul. Just new subscriber today, but have watched a couple of your videos. This one is pretty funny! To answer your question about unplugging the electricity cords, I believe you will find it goes back to the days of no regulation such as found in the developed world that controls electrical safety practices, such as grounded connections, tight and good connections, that violations which cause heat and end in fires. Paul Old Dog's friend Goldfinger's apartment burned to the ground the day his new furniture was to be delivered. They put him up in another apartment in the same building, and the electrical outlets and switches sparked and crackled, and he feared that place would burn down. This is a very widespread issue that doesn't get talked about, but the natives know all about it. Just an educated hypothesis from an old electrician in US. I could be wrong, but I've seen it here in the US even with the National Electric Code. Hope this gives a different perspective, Thanks for the PI insights! Your vids are way cool!

What sucks is when they invite other people, yet they aren’t paying for it but act as if they are. No wonder my other Filipino friends say they don’t tell relatives when they go on vacation.

Helps that he's single though, no car, cooks all his food at home, VA got his back medically and looking for a girl who has her own money. Maybe among the most serious is 'Bad Business Starts' and I'm glad to report I'm seeing far less of these and yet STILL you'll see retirement age (and sometimes younger ones) who can think of nothing but how they can open a great new bar, restaurant, vegan salad, cafe or a full-on nightclub. I'm going to deliberately describe worse cases to get the warnings across but consider this:
    - There are places where fleecing a foreigner opening a business IS their business. They will proactively try and encourage a foreigner into it, suggest it and yes they will 'know a guy in government' and promise they can get insider help, the whole thing from the start.
    - I've known a dozen kinds of cases where they sure did help the foreigner get their cafe, gym, nightclub going and once everything was paid, bought, installed, opened and they saw how it was run.. ...the foreigner was informed the govt had to shut it down. They may even find visa problems boot them out and not back in. months later, after the foreigner is disposed of, low and behold the club, bar, restaurant re-opens. Someone's uncle is the new owner. thanks for the free stuff!
    - As noted in this video, there are places where it's great you've opened and it's running just fine and the weekend you didn't come in, it's like delinquent teenagers throwing a horrific party for their friends, product will be going out that backdoor, supplies will be sold, replaced with counterfeits, there was a 'break-in' and they even ripped copper wiring out of the wall and somehow a prostitute was using your office all long weekend. You are sure there were 25 chairs and now you can only find 17 chairs, etc etc.
    - "Okay, well we'll see what the police/lawyers have to say about that!" oh sir, you're not in Kansas anymore.
    - "I got it right here on a signed contract!" the idea of a 'contract' like that isn't really shared by all cultures :(
Obviously everyone is different but there is also something to consider and that is that very very few of these, I mean the successful ones, they rarely make any kind of money. Sometimes enough to pay for themselves and the owners friends and family's snacks, use and drinks etc. Which is fine too. Just don't think in terms of paying for living expenses either.
    -------------
Please do not be fooled by walking around and seeing cafes and bars where you notice they're terribly run, the food/beer/etc isn't good and you rarely see anyone inside YET "they've been there for years.. if they can survive then I can make a way better cafe/restaurant that will be, at least, better than those!
Yes you can but there are places in SE Asia where many of these cafes, sandwich shops, bars, etc are full-on 'Fronts' and exist to launder money and/or some weird tax schemes and probably both. They absolutely lose money (err..as in actual proper sales/expenses) and will not go out of business and yes they employ staff and sell less than 5 coffees in a day.
    --------------
Not everything is negative and bad in life BUT please please heed the warnings in this video around business startups.

I still find trikes alot of fun and so affordable, especially with the lack of formal taxis in Tacloban. The only headache is if I go grocery shopping I have to control myself and limit what I buy since trikes can only carry so much safely. You dont want to put stuff on back unattended or it may not be there when you get home. Only if a car is available can I really load up at the grocery store. So have to plan those trips. Trikes really do depend on the town you are in. In the provinces they can really be a good option. But in Cebu or Manila, I really prefer Grab to taxis and there are no trikes.

You're not going to be rolling in hookers and blow - but you can have a roof - a pool - a weight room - a sauna - and enough food to survive to the next check. For an extra $100 a month you can get a maid that will come in and clean three times a week and will make sure your reproductive system works properly. There are worse things in the world.

Not going to debate the budget thing.,.. you are right. Budgets vary. One point I'd like to make though... If $1200 SS every month is going to be rough in the Philippines.... how much rougher will it be to live on that in the U.S.? I think if an expat can either come with enough to buy a condo or a home with a pinay wife... Then living on 1000-1200 is very doable. Or the same could be said of a person who chooses an efficiency apartment lifestyle at $200 or less per month. And the argument is made that well why would you want to come to Philippines and live frugally? Because perhaps living on the same in the US isn't even possible unless you live in a slum, or go thru red tape every year or so to qualify for government assistance.
And one final thing about budgets... budgets are based on what you have. You admit to having a windfall in your bank. And because your budget is higher... use use it. It's simple as that. For those that have a smaller budget... they use it. I think the trick is to NOT bring the western lifestyle mindset to the Philippines. To not try and recreate the lifestyle you are "accustomed to" because you cannot have all the benefits of a western lifestyle without taking on the stress, costs, and unhappiness it comes with. The whole reason I am getting out is the rat race... the neverending strive to get more stuff. I am overwhelmed with all the crap I have been going thru to sell, give away, donate or trash.
I'm leaving the western mindset behind.

I spent most of the time with one filipina with whom I had been talking for about 3 months. Then I booked to come back in June 2020. Then the pandemic happened. We talked every day on whatsapp and skype. I got back here in Dec 2021. My filipina and I live together. We got married on 8 March 2023 after we had lived together for 15 months. Your advice to not send money and don't fall to deeply in love until you meet in person. I enjoy your videos. PS. I live in the province about 120 kms southeast of Manila. 2 km to the beach. I've been an American expat for much of my adult life, and I've told other expats this story many times:
A man dies and goes to heaven. After some time of floating around on clouds and experiencing continual bliss, he became bored.
So he asked God if he could visit Hell for a day. God agreed, and the man knocked on the gates of Hell. The door swung open to reveal a beautiful woman who, noting his shock, said in a sweet and sultry voice: "I suppose you thought the devil was a man."
The air was filled with sweet perfume, butterflies swarmed about, and the man was offered all his favorite foods, followed by a sensual massage provided by the most beautiful women he could imagine. His entire day was filled with pleasures.
When he returned to heaven, he asked God if he could stay in Hell. God said yes, but there was one condition: he could never return to heaven. The man agreed, and returned to Hell.
The man knocked on the door. It swung open, and the man was surrounded by a thick sulfurous cloud. Out of the cloud stepped a gargoyle that swiftly impaled the man with a pitchfork and threw him into a vat of boiling tar. Through his torment, the man screamed that he didn't understand what was happening. And the gargoyle growled:
    "Never confuse tourism with immigration!"

I cook at home, and the cost is 350.00 to 400.00 for the food bill, and if I treat myself to a movie and a dinner, the cost is 35.00. I add up my bill, and because I'm a bit budget-minded, it costs at least $3,500 a month. This is frugal, but if I wish to live by your standards here, it would be 6,000 dollars easy, and we are not even adding in health insurance costs each month.

This video was informative. However the bottom line is if you go there to live your first and biggest mistake that will pretty much solve all that is mentioned is to not go there expecting to live like an american for example. Buy a big house put in aircon and all these fancy things you think you “need” buy a car …etc.
If your there retired (compared to vacation as you mentioned) who cares how long a line is your retired!! And you don’t need a car and shouldn’t be eating out every day and drinking Starbucks or paying for all that.
If you live there embrace their ways and you can live cheaper and healthier and less stressed. The fact that you complain of such things means they stresss you out and that’s because your still living as you were before.

You get an A+ on this one for no other reason than you had the courage to address the sensitive issue of old expats who knock-up young Filipinas. This is a HUGE pet peeve of mine! I would estimate that 90% of all the old expats that do this DON'T have the necessary resources to see their children through to adulthood, have no realistic plan, and simply don't even care! I cannot count the number of Amerasian children I've seen living in destitute poverty whose European/American father has already passed away. You will certainly suffer the scorn of many old butthurt expats for exposing their dysfunctional thinking. GOOD ON YOU!

It's crazy that people from my country seem to think Asia is cheaper to retire in. I am not saying my country is perfect, but if you do not want to work that's fine our government will pay you, our hospital care for the sick is 100% free, we do have private insurance for treatments that are not life-threatening to be done much sooner. If you can not afford the rent, the government we pay for it. We have a good and fairly clean environment, with great quality of life.
So, for me, Asia is only a nice place to visit as the cost of living for an expat is very expensive!

Unless I'm mistaken A US SS recipient's pension goes up 50% when a dependent child is born. And the child is entitled to monthly survivor benefits until age 18. Example in my case that's addition 1400$ per month. Filipino mom would be exuberant to get 1400$(70k pesos) monthly. I will need to check thoroughly because it appear to be relevant to my situation.

Yes if you have an additional child they would split that $1400. They have to have an SSN and if I am not mistaken need to be living full time in the US.

I will say a relative of mine met his Philippina wife online, traveled there to meet her, applied for a US fiance' visa, and has been married to her for 12 years. He moved her to the US and her mother immediately followed. His biggest complaints are the cultural differences. I will NOT be following his lead in my retirement plans...

To me, to live on $1200 you have to do these things: if you get marry and then you build a house, put solar panels on your house, put water towel in your house and with big Lot or land and plant vegetables that you like then you can live on $1200

I strongly believed that it should be every man dream to be rent free when you retire. Because when you were working, you paid rent or mortgage throughout. Building a house will take some of the stress on you. To me paying rent in your retirement live can be stressful and can cause your cost of living to be high

I have been watching videos from six youtubers for a few years now and have a much better idea of what i'll be getting myself into by retiring in the PI. I'm thinking that big city living will probably be my hardest challenge as i come from a rural area in the midwest. I have no fantasy of finding love but would like to find some gal that will either be a live in or just come around and cook some food and clean a little. I'm a factory slave here in the U.S. so my expectations aren't really all that high. One more year to hit my 66 and a 1/2 mark for social security. And i have a decent 401k so hopefully i can make a go of it. We'll soon see. And if not i just come back home. I strongly agree with what you're saying about leaving some gal in worse shape than before so i'm also trying to work up the courage to get "clipped" before going to the PI. Lol.

My son will be 13 in august and I intend for him to come with me. It's the only reason I'm not already there is because he is legally my step son (mother has passed) and I have to complete an adoption before I can get his passport. But I do not worry about the cost of international school because my plan is to enroll him in online public school. He can do his lessons online and graduate with a US diploma. He honestly wants to go to regular school so he can make friends but we will be traveling for the first year, maybe longer, so online is a better option.

Seems to me that budget is more about what you are use to than the actual amount. If you are spending $5K a month an think you are going to retire anywhere an live on $1K a month, you are probably not going to make it. But someone who has already been living on $1K a month in the US for several years, I bet they can do fine on that same $1K a month there.
Same goes for location. I have lived on a Mountain all my life in the US on roughly $700 a month, going in to the city about once a month. I would guess I would do ok on a mountain just about anywhere in the world. But someone from a big city in the US, use to eating out 3 times a day an going out on the town every night, expecting to move out in the middle of nowhere an survive of any budge, thats asking a lot. Even if you manage it, you will likely hate it.
Learning to live out in the countryside or on a tight budget, takes years. Trying to learn both at the same time, doable but I would not advise it.

Good subject. People should set up a life insurance plan if they want kids . A house and insurance policy goes a long way if you set it up right when you die. Best way to make a million in Philippines in business is to start off with 2 million. I'm sure I will make mistakes. so glad I have a few revenue streams to help me fail and bounce back lol
